You have to check this place out just because its address starts with 1/2!
What a hidden little gem in the middle of the hustle -- when we walked into the basement bar at 5 PM on a Friday, we were the second party to arrive. It did not take long for all tables to fill out but at no point in the evening was it crowded.
The space is very cozy, with low ceilings, carpets, and couches. The wine list is worthy of such a place -- has both very reasonably priced pleasers as well as more spendy choices. They also have some featured flights as well as comparison flights (2 half-glasses of similar wines for compare-and-contrast exercise). A small cheese/appetizer menu is also available. A perfect spot to either get together with your friends and read a book with a nice glass of port.
Their bathroom is located back in the hotel lobby -- the small space has a suspicious uncovered window right by the toilet. Fear not -- someone such as myself has examined the situation and is ready to report back! The window leads into one of the narrowest wells between the two buildings with no other windows facing it on the same level -- so you can rest assured of your restroom privacy!
And yes, bathroom situation is important when reviewing a bar ;-)
The Hidden Vine is accessed either via a back alley, or through a quaint hotel, which lends heavily to a noir setting. Duck in out of a rainy night and dive into a glass. The quiet and intimate setting will lull you either into good conversation, or conversely, a slumber.
Roundup:
- Quiet, intimate.
- Decor is pretentious, but very comfortable.
- The space is small, enough for three at the bar, and 20 in the assorted couches and chairs.
- There is a limited selection of Cabs by the glass, but the quality shiraz and chiantis make up for this. The menu on their site: http://www.thehiddenvi... is outdated. The actual winelist is 2-3 times as long.
For October's edition of Happy Girls' Night, Amy B. chose The Hidden Vine as our destination, and yeah, it is pretty tucked away. I think I walked past the building two or three times before realizing it was right in front of me. Very cute little lounge in the middle of the Tendernob, a place you wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it. It seems like the establishment gets a good number of its customers from the hotel or whatever it is that's connected to it, but not in our case.
I met up with Amy around 5 pm, just as the wine bar was opening. Our server was very helpful and knowledgeable, and suggested a delicious glass of Pinot Noir for me after describing what kind of wine I liked. Amy and I split a bowl of mixed olives, which were great to munch on and whetted our appetites for dinner. The decor is cozy and inviting and if I visit again, I will probably bring Ben.
This place is adorable! It has a vibe of a speakeasy and tea-dance-twenties that is enhanced by the fact that it's accessed through a hotel called "The Fitzgerald." They offer lots of options for wine flights, which is great if you're indecisive like me. My only gripe is that service was extremely slow for a place so intimate.
Cute little place. Staff was knowledgable but a tad stuffy. Food choices limited. Most importantly, I didn't like one of the four reds in my flight. I was quite disappointed. I'm not a snob but do usually find a wine or two that I want more of. Not this day. They tend to focus on small wineries with limited production. Maybe that limits their offerings a bit too much? Probably will not return.
I really like this place. A tiny hole in the wall, it looks like someone's basement turned into a family room. Great place to park yoruself on a couch and enjoy fine wine, and good conversation. They have these wine flights, where you taste 3 wines for $15 or something ... and they are much larger than the 'tastes' you get at wineries in Napa Valley ... I was pretty buzzed after that. Then they have their cheese plates, and their cheese special of the day. When I went last, they had a truffled burratta ... that's like two of my favorite things in the world put into one -- how can you go wrong with that?
I've only been twice (within the same week!) and look forward to going back. FYI, they change their tasting menus every month ... I should make a goal to go there once a month!
My OTHER favorite wine bar! This has a nice comfortable atmosphere, and I like the location, its kind of hidden (hence the name!) but easy to get to from the Financial district if you work downtown. The staff/owners are super knowledgeable and I love the wine flights they offer. I also like the paper rings they provide with the flights, you can take them home so you remember the wines you drank and look for them at your local wine shops.
I have come to the possible conclusion that since I have been working at the library for close to a decade that when I go out to dine or drink, I prefer a quiet and intimate location. But the main reason I really enjoy this type of location is because I believe in the illusion that I have found a hidden gem.
Entering through the back entrance of The Hidden Vine and walking down to a cozy basement type lounge area, I felt like I was invited into a small little get together with good friends. I had chance to enjoy some nice wine and cheeses while taking in the ambience and conversation. It helps to be with good company too!
So Hidden...
Just for that, I LOVE IT!
It's comfy, cute, and cozy... pillows + couches are adorn all around the room to create a romantic, yet homey feel to the place. Even tho I came here with a friend, I would definitely bring my gal pals, a date, or someone special here the next time I go! The prices were reasonable. We ordered a cheese plate and each of us had a wine flight. I like that they are opened "till -late." We were one of the few left, yet we didn't feel rushed out at all!
Well, when in Rome...
Anyone who may know me, might also know that I arrive to almost every party late. I don't mean literally (I'm quite punctual, thank you) but rather figuratively.
I'm a late bloomer across many if not all aspects of my life, first time eating a tomato - age 12, first kiss - age 18, first time eating an egg - age 26....the list of late arrival is lengthy (as well as embarrassing). So it's no surprise that I am pretty green on topic of wine. Up until I recently it was seen as just yucky grape juice.
Pallet, undertones, finish, tannins...all terms belonging to other areas of study. But at the Hidden Vine, with coaxing and tutelage from some knowledgeable acquaintances, last night I received a crash course.
We were served our flights, each presented with little cards showing the region, type and year displayed for personal edification. The server was extremely well mannered and friendly, with a propensity toward offering piquant little tastes of fun wines.
The location was much like a darkened little den tucked away inside an equally little hotel, with soft furniture, dim lights and relaxed atmosphere I was totally at home (love tiny spaces). It was pretty much where I expected wine snobbery to take place, and it did, and it was great.
Drinks with friends, learning about wine (yay multi-tasking) it was a great finish to the day.
Alright! I now have wine under my belt, up next...canned tuna fish.
I went here last night with a friend after finding it on Yelp, and had to add my $.02 on the place. First, as they say, timing is everything. We walked in and were lucky to have found a seat on the cozy couch, since all the tables and 'bar seating' were filled. In the time we sat there (about an hour) a lot of people came in - couples, large groups, etc. - and had nowhere to sit, so they left, however, if those groups had come in 30-45 minutes later they would have found plenty of seating. I guess it's better to have a small bar that people have to be turned away from than a large bar that feels empty. You know, the allure of what they are missing.
Now, to the wine and food. The wine selection was really nice. We both prefer sweet white wines and bubbly, so having a choice of sparkling wines and at least 2 different Rieslings was a big selling point for us. The service wasn't bad, since the place was pretty busy. Our waiter was aware of us being there, gave us a sufficient amount of attention as well as a sufficient amount of space. My biggest complaint had to be the food choice/presentation. The picture on their website looks so professional, while what we were given looked far different. The cheese was good, the salami very good, and the olives OK, though there were far more than I have been given at other wine bars, they just weren't that special. The presentation, however, really lacked the professional element I expect from a wine bar that only serves cheese, meats, and olives. The chutney was alright, and paired well with the cheeses. The serving utensil was a regular knife, where a cheese spreader would have been much more compatible with the meal, as well as a small spoon for the chutney. These may seem like fairly nit-picky items, but when out with friends/a significant other/date/spouse, serving should still be relatively simple.
All-in-all, $50 for 2 glasses of wine, 2 cheese selections, 1 salami, olives, and a few baguettes was a little much for the overall experience. I have had better wine, food, and service at less-trendy places.
The Hidden Vine -- such an intriguing name. To celebrate the end of my time in the cubicle world, some gal pals and I decided some serious drinking was in order. A quick yelp search led us straight to this little wine bar in the TL (After 3 years of the soul crushing corporate life, I needed to get the hell out of the FiDi stat).
The space is very small, but cozy. A little dark room filled with various sizes and styles of tables, chairs, benches, and one small bar in the corner. And since it is so hidden, it wasn't jam packed during the usual happy hour bar rush time. Two of us arrived first and picked out a nice round table with comfy chairs.
I didn't see anyone resembling an employee of the establishment, so I bopped over to the bar to grab two menus. The bartender then saw me and said "Oh I didn't see you come in, I'll be right over to help in just a minute". Fine. About 10 minutes later, the other two members of our party arrived. The bartender had yet to come over to our table, so I went back to the bar to grab two more menus. We all sat around and gabbed for about 10 more minutes before I realized the bartender still had not come over.
Ok....waiting 20 minutes for service in a near empty bar is just not ok. Especially a wine bar where people are likely to have questions about the menu. One of my girlfriends had to get up and find the bartender and request to place our order. 3 of us ordered flights, the other a single glass. He brought out the wine, placed it all on the table and peaced out. No descriptions of what was what or anything! Instead the glasses had labels on the bottom, which is fine, but not a substitute for service.
Bad service aside, I still like this spot and will most likely come back. It's comfortable, wine was good (and affordable....$12-15/flight). And based on all the 5 star reviews, I'm guessing the service we got was a fluke.
There is one more point of discussion....and I have to be honest, this incident made me like The Hidden Vine even more. There was a couple sitting behind us that was groping each other from the moment we walked in (circa 6 pm mind you, we're talking decent hours here). By the time we left, they were pretty much having sex in the back corner of the bar. Who does that?!!?!?! Well, ok, we've all had our moments, but who does that when it's still light outside??? We kept trying to take pictures, but the guy kept noticing and pulling away. He was still slightly coherent and clearly embarrassed about the situation, but being a typical male, he wasn't about to turn away any girl who was so eager to straddle him and lick his face.
So all in all....Hidden Vine....not what I expected.
After walking past this discreet hole-in-the wall everyday for over a year; I finally took the bf here to enjoy a relaxing late afternoon snack after an agressive afternoon of elbowing fellow shoppers down on Union Square.
For starts, most read-able wine menu I've ever seen. Starting with whites, the menu is broken down into a spectrum of the lightest whites to the boldest reds. Perfect for those who are not too sure about regions etc.. but know how they like their wines to taste.
Second kudos goes to the gentleman serving up the libations- recommended a fabulous cheese to pair with our spicy reds- a nice, creamy burrata with truffle oil and sea salt... yumm.
Best part of the experience was the dark atmosphere with plush, tucked away nooks and krannies for you to sip, eat, and relax with your favorite person.
Great!! Wonderful place to hang out with friends (or a date). Great cheese selection to complement an interesting wine list. Definitely a low key bar so don't expect a party but it's a great place to relax with a delicious glass of wine....or three.
I was not impressed with this place. And I'm a sucker for wine bars. I love wine bars; they're my favorite bars of all time! Yes, it's cute and hidden in the cute neighborhood of Nob Hill/Tender nob, but the service was real crappy. And quality is important to me.
It took the server at LEAST 20 minutes to come by our table and ask if we were ready to order. One of the gals I was with even had to go up to the bar to tell him we were ready to order. The bar was not all busy either.
We all had flights of wine (two reds and one white). One of the red wines was so gross (it tasted like hard liquor), I couldn't even take more than a few sips of it. I believe it was called the Casalone. Ewww, if you order the red, I would tell the server you do not want this wine.
Ehhh, i hope to find another cute wine bar in this neighborhood with way better service.
I better write this before I forget about going here and how good it was. Too late! It's almost a fading memory.
I do remember several kinds of wine, three flights, some great comparisons, a nice quite setting even though it's so small. I got to try several different kinds of wine, and the little cards on the glass helped. Too bad I can't remember what we had. OH, we had dessert wine too.
I remember leaving, bottle in hand. The next thing I remember is waking up the next morning. I don't remember paying, but saw the receipt the next day. How I got home, I'll never know.
That's all I got ... and I can't wait to go back when I can write a proper review! Serves me right for not eating much before I went in. Eat before you go!
Cute little wine bar located across from Le Colonial. When I went there recently, I had to smile because I remembered how one Yelper had written that it was like drinking in Grandma's basement parlour. When I mentioned that, she thought it was "cozy" which seems to be the one word that comes up the most in describing The Hidden Vine.
I liked how it was laid back and wasn't a "scene" kind of place, even for a Friday night. Personally, I prefer a bit more flash, but all in all, it was a nice place and the service was very friendly. We had two red wine flights, Italy and Spain, and although they weren't too memorable, they were both reasonably priced with good pours.
I would definitely go back.
The terms, "cozy" and "intimate" have been used frequently in the reviews, and I can't think of better descriptives for The Hidden Vine. For a perpetual wine newb like myself, it provided the perfect platform in which to sample various wines. I hate that it took me so long to check it out.
Other than the wildly different sets of tables and chairs, it is literally like settling into someone's Victorian-inspired living room. I can't stress how nice it is to be able to go to a drinking establishment on a weekend, 1. that isn't crowded and stuffy, and 2. are able to hear each other's conversation.
They do offer a food menu of nibblers (cheese, olives, and the like) to go along with their extensive wine menu. I loved the different flights and head-to-head comparisons. Not to mention, the prices being more than reasonable. I only wish there were more glass options available.
Service was timely and informative; I have no complaints. But between the complicated wine names and regions, more than half the things our server said went right over my head. He could've been talking out of his ass for all I know, but it sounded like he knew his sh*t.
A nice little place to chill. A bit dark and dank for my liking though. It had an old musky smell about it. They have a large selection of wines, both bottles and by the glass (average $10). It is a bit hidden, hence the name. Either enter from the Fitzgerald hotel or Cosmo Pl.
After seeing so many good reviews here on yelp about this place, I decided to check it out. I LOVED IT! It was exactly what everyone said. Cute, Comfy and Cozy! The servers were very friendly and informative. I ended up getting what they recommended and both the wine and cheese servings were exceptional. I would definitely come here again when I'm back in San Francisco.
Best wine bar in San Francisco. I wrote that for one of the weeklies a few years ago, but they failed to tell me I couldn't choose the same place that had won the year before, and so didn't run my write-up.
Though I haven't been here alone with my special girl, it has to be in the top 5 romantic places to be in the city (Top of the Mark being No. 1).
Besides the best atmosphere you can ask for, with low lighting, comfortable seating, and intimacy without being forced to join in your neighbor's conversation, there's the wine list.
Hidden Vine thrives on letting you taste as well as learn wines. The front page of the menu is filled with flights and side-by-side comparisons. For the head-to-heads, you're served glasses with generous pours and labels facing down. Sorry, but anything conducive to my playing a game solo is a winner in my book.
So ...
Take a group of friends wanting to learn more about wines by tasting them in a pleasant atmosphere. Or take your special someone down the steps from Cosmo Alley (where, just a few steps down, you'll find the famed Le Colonial) and stake out a cushioned cubby hole of your own. Drink down your wine and remember that you're in one of the best places to do what you're doing, in one of the best cities for the same.
In the same alley as Le Colonial is a little door, leading down the stairs into a cute little wine bar that looks like a bed and breakfast with out the bed and breakfast. Small seating area for gathering with friends, and then a small bar area. Tiny little place but just the perfect tucked away secret spot. Of course it's a secret spot on Yelp so it's not really a secret. But still while I was there, it felt special.
Nice offering of wines and champagnes and some light food like cheese, meats and desserts. The staff is super friendly and knew their inventory and didn't make the little wine innocent like me feel lost looking at the menu.
Had I not had plans to meet someone at Le Colonial, I would have stayed here all night.
This is a little hard to find, but so worth it!
Small, SUPER chill, and cute "cork dorks" behind the bar who will help you pick the perfect wine and the cheese that goes with it.
I came with a group of friends for a drink before dinner, but I could see it as being a really good date place as well.
So boys......who is taking me to the Hidden Vine?
This place is so cozy with lots of cute little nooks. The wine list has flights and varietal and regional comparisons. The staff is friendly and attentive.
A small group of us went here for a drink after dinner at Le Colonial. The space seemed cool but we quickly learned the service is horrible. They were not busy at all - there were only 4-5 other people there - but the minute the owner came to our table to take our orders he was rude & impatient. One of the woman who was with us had a couple of questions about the selection which he seemed to find annoying...like we should be prepared to just order w/out asking him anything. When one of our group made a small joke to lighten the mood, the owner told us to leave or he would call the cops. Let me be clear - we are not a bunch of drunk college kids. We are all in our late 30's - early 40's & are doctors, lawyers, in finance or business. The owner seemed to think he was the "soup nazi" from Seinfeld. I will certainly never go back & highly recommend you avoid this place if you value good service.
I guess I'll have to try it again. I think it was quite stuffy and pretentious actually. I felt very uncomfortable. We had one beer and took off.
I may have been paranoid because I was already a little tipsy though.
Went here a second time, and it just didn't have the same charm as the first. Plus, the wines were gross.
I ordered a flight of reds, and two of them were just bad. Flabby, uninteresting and served way too cold. The place itself was too cold. The service slow. We jetted out of there in record time.
Not sure why this experience was less thrilling. Can't put my finger on it. But it was such a turn off that I don't even think I'll give it a third chance to break the tie.

This is my current favorite place in SF. Small, intimate, w/really nice people and knowledgable people working there. Seriously, this place rocks.
At the beginning of each month they pick a region in the world, stock up on wines from that region, and set up a comparison between those and the closest Cali equivalent. Try to guess which wine came from where -- they pair em up so you've got a 50/50 shot.
Perfect place if you're looking for a comfortable, quiet and mature scene.
A very warm, cozy, romantic, intimate wine lounge to have meaningful (or even not so meaningful) conservations with friends or your partner in crime. (Nice place for a date!) The wine selection is great, the cheese selection great, olives marinated yummy, and they even offer Navarro grape juice if you have a non-alcoholic drinker in the mix. It gets busy sometimes after work hours (especially Fridays) and a little warm...that never stopped us from just enjoying the moment there.
The staff there know the wines and if you want to know more, all you have to do is ask - they are really friendly and not intrusive.
Be prepared to have everyone stare at you when you walk in. The stairs are like a stage that hovers above the audience. So don't fall. Or do. It'll be funny for the rest of us.
We paraded in there one Valentine's Day last year, and it was jammed, so we left. But I have wanted to go back since. I finally did recently, and was glad I remembered. The service was great. One guy, but he was very attentive to all his tables. He even chased down some dine-and-dashers (and then the girl forgot her wallet on her seat. Nice.).
We each had a comparison (he poured 2 very healthy "half" glasses of 2 wines to compare), and then I ordered a flight (again, very generous pours). Not the best wines, at least for my taste, but very good. There are so many wines, and they're always changing the tasting menu, so you're bound to find something you like each time. Walked out feeling VERY good for a reasonable price. Quite, dark, lots of 2 top tables, so perfect for a date (if you have something to talk about, otherwise, kinda awkward).
No vegan food on the menu other than olives and bread. So swing by Millennium first for a bite - just a couple blocks away.
This place has the worst service I have ever experienced, here or abroad (including Asia), and would perhaps best remain "Hidden." Although the allure of the cozy lounge is indeed palpable, customers should not expect to be treated as such. When I made a harmless joke in hopes of establishing rapport with the man taking our order, he became agitated and indicated that we should all leave, then performed an about face and scurried away. I followed him and explained that I meant no harm, and then volunteered to leave, with the request that my friends be allowed to stay. Rather fiercely, he responded that that all of us had to leave to pay for my trangression. I am not kidding. It struck me that I was dealing with the most omnipotent order taker in the Tenderloin, and I decided to make haste before things got out of hand. One of our group remained behind to discuss the matter further, at which point he declared that we were on private property; then he began dialing the police. I am not kidding.....we hung around for a few minutes to see if the police would actually show up, but then lost interest and moved on to spend our money elsewhere.....needless to say, we will not visit this Tenderloin gem again.
The most aptly named spot in the city, it is hidden and they serve wine. Completely, utterly, unpretentious, no attitude, not trendy, just warm and comfortable and dark. Extremely carpeted. The selection is wide, even for a wine bar, and it is priced to move: more than half the bottles are $27 to $45, it is all interesting stuff, and the staff knows their wine. Some simple but hearty and delicious cheese and meat plates and they do not skimp. One of the best places in town for a sit and talk, writing the next great american novel on your laptop, or a brief rest from the strains of urban living.
4 stars, but I'll give one more because they deserve it.
I'd heard about what a great date spot this is, so I thought I'd see this place for the first time with a first date.
I like my bars the way I like my women -- challenging -- and I appreciate how easy it is to miss from the street. In fact, this place seems somehow more surreptitious than the nearby Bourbon and Branch. I could see a lot of extramarital affairs happening here. (And somehow, I mean that as a compliment.)
All I had was one glass, which I liked, so I can't speak to the quality of booze here. The decor is definitely on the cutesy side, but for what this bar is going for it pulls it off well. No need to get closer to have a conversation here -- it was so quiet I could hear every glass clink in the joint.
I guess I can only fault Hidden Vine for being so cozy that I'd never bring a guy friend here, lest our testosterone level drop to Oprah-watching levels. And it's no place to meet new people. But the bar made it easy for my date and I to corrupt each other, so I'm a believer.
OMG!! What a perfect experience after such a :( experience at Le Colonial.
So this place is approx 12 steps from the door of Le Colonial (across random alleyway). I used iPhone Yelp to find it, and what. a. gem, even though it is in the basement of some random hotel. We walked down a few stairs to find an extremely comfortable, inviting atmosphere. We grabbed a table (bummed that cute little cove wasn't open) and perused the wine list. The bf had this grand idea of getting truffles as dessert and he couldn't have had a better idea in the world - what indulgent little thingamajigs on a plate that go perfectly with red wine.
This place is perfect for everyone (except, likely, those heading above the Le Colonial). Groups looking to meet up. Couples. Old friends. New friends. Solo. We moved from a table to the couch across the bar (big mistake - I was so tired and the couch is sleep-inducing).
I wish The Hidden Vine was in the basement of MY building.
A little bit romantic, a little bit exciting, a little bit relaxing, a lot of fun. And such a tasty selection of wines!
Only go if:
-You are prepared for a VERY chill night;
-You are in a group of four or less or you are on a date
-You are prepared to squint at the menu bc it is very dark (but oh-so-cute)
-You are ready to enjoy some great wines at very decent prices.
This is a lovely, cozy, charming wine bar and I am definitely a fan. How ironic that it's right across the street from Le Colonial - I'd choose a night at The Hidden Vine over Le Colonial any day.
Still top of my list as a hidden gem to try out the tasting menu or a specific country / region before a big dinner or a show! It's especially great if you are not hungry enough to eat but want a cozy and intimate place to whisper or a place to enjoy some social chatters in the velvety deco and wine...

A charming wine lounge, truly hidden in a little alley off of Post Street. Not a fancy or impressive environment, but cozy and cute nonetheless.
Grab a small table or a nice comfy velvet loveseat.
The service is very friendly and unpretentious and they clearly know their wines.
I would recommend getting the flights, which are organized by region. On my most recent visit I had 2 flights from France- one white and one red. Each flight had 3 glasses. Cost was $10 for the white flight and $18 for the red flight. Both completely worth it! Their pours are very generous and each glass was excellent. In my experience at wine bars usually a couple of the wines in a flight are not too tasty, but at the Hidden Vine it appears that every glass has been thoughtfully picked out because they are all delicious.
I came here once before for 2 Australian flights, white and red. Total cost for 2 flights of 4 glasses each ( total 8 glasses) was only $20! Again, the wines were ALL delicious!
I like the way they have little tags on the glasses with the name of the wine on each glass- we used them to play a nice game of blind wine tasting..yes admittedly dorky but fun nonetheless!
Hidden Vine isn't entirely off the beaten path, but you could easily walk by it over and over again without noticing it. It is very subtly and cutely tucked into the back of a hotel lobby, and the sign, while present, is understated.
This little wine bar is charming and low key and comfortable, with a diverse selection of wines and helpful bartenders who will do things like trick you into really liking a glass of Merlot, even though you fancy yourself too cool for such proletarian varietals. You can sip your vino at tables or on plush couches and chairs. The noise level is ambient so conversation is easy.
I can highly recommend this place for a first date.
(And, if your date happens to be really cute and fun, and you want to get him a little liquored up and see what happens, there are some less civilized bars within easy walking distance.)
I still love this place. We returned this past trip to SF and had a great time. It was a little less crowded which was nice and we made friends with our bartenders and a local who shared a plate of truffles and desert wines with us (Thanks Paula!). I discovered that I do NOT like port, no matter what sort of chocolate you are serving it with!
Thanks to the bartenders who were truthful that the Malbec on the list was no good, but the Tempranillo was excellent.
