The Hermitage is truly worthy of its 5-star status. I've never stayed at a hotel where i really couldn't point a finger at some flaw or another. It's a class act.
Some of my favorite details about the hotel included the selection of pillows (buckwheat, memory foam, etc), the luxurious bathrobes, the plasma TV in the bathroom, the super-fast high-speed FREE Internet connection, etc.
For dining, the Oak Bar is a great setting for a drink and an app. The main dining room has a wonderful menu and great service. I highly recommend trying both during your visit (I also hear taking Afternoon Tea is also a great experience, but I didn't try that).
Lastly, if you think you can't afford this place, try http://priceline.com during mid-week or off-season and you can definitely find a deal. It's no more expensive than the Hilton, Sheraton, etc. and definitely has a lot more character. Put it on your list if you're in Nashville- you won't regret it.
The Hermitage Hotel is truly a classic and easily the best hotel in Nashville. The rooms might not be as big as some hotels in this price range but the decor and service more than make up for that. As you may have heard, the men's bathroom in the lobby is really an attraction. The rooms are comfortable, well-appointed, and classy.
Like most other high-end hotels, the service is very attentive and accommodating. They help when they can but know when guests don't want help. How many times have you had hotel staff grab a small bag and carry it a few feet then look at you expecting a tip? Won't happen here. That said, if you're cheap, this isn't the place for you - unless you're on an expense account!
The location is great too. It is walking distance to many Nashville attractions, including the Honky Tonks, Country Music Hall of Fame, State Capital, State Museum, and even the Colosseum. Upper floors and the rooms on the north side have great views of Downtown or Capitol Hill.
Stayed at The Hermitage a few years ago during a business trip. Gorgeous!!! The room was beautiful, comfortable, clean and huge! I'm completely sure that it's larger than most apartments in NYC. I remember it being a horribly rainy day and I was outside in the rain ALL day long. I came back into my room, bed turned down, soft relaxing music playing and warm cookies on my nightstand, robe laid out and slippers beside the bed. Now... if a nice hot bath was drawn and awaiting my return, it would have been the perfect evening. I would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat.
This historic hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The staff is wonderful, helpful and friendly. I didn't stay here, but I did have afternoon tea and dinner here at the Capitol Grille (separate review).
Afternoon tea: There's a menu on the hotel's website. Huge selection of hot teas and 5 or so varieties of the iced tea. We had white ambrosia and the iced white ginger pear tea. Delicious!
The full spread is $21 per person and you get:
* one tea of your choice (with as many refills as you like)
* 3-tiered tray of finger tea sandwiches (caprese, cucumber, turkey, salmon)
* Chocolate covered strawberries - mini balls of crispy chocolate covered half. Lemon tarts covered in raspberries. Apple pastry. AMAZING!!!!!!!
* Scones with Devonshire cream and strawberry preserves
Check out the men's art deco bathroom outside the restaurant. It's lovely. I posted a picture of the plaque outside the restroom explaining it's significance.
One of my favorite things to do in this town is to take beer in the Oak Bar. The atmosphere is dark, warm and enfolding. They bring you salty snacks. I know, everyone says this ('cause it's true!)~ but the staff is hospitable and you always feel welcome.
I've only ever been to three or four other Teas in my life, but the Hermitage Afternoon Tea goes down as my favorite, partly because of the gorgeous lobby. Great tea selection too: the white ambrosia was the unanimous table pick but I liked the black currant. The scones with cream were sublime.
Again the ever road warrior, I found myself in Nashville this time. Semi lost and arriving way past the witching hour, you can imagine how surprised I was to walk into this outstanding building.
I was a) surprised b) in awe.
A) Because I knew we never stayed in places this nice for the project I was currently on.
B) Aesthetically it was an olympic adventure for my ever so tired eyes. A moment before I couldn't of kept them open but from the time I walked into the lobby I felt as if I had to take it all in.
The staff was divine, the rooms were exquisite, and I can't wait to go back. I don't even need a reason, but if you do:
Spa bathrooms with trays
Molton Brown toiletries
Marble showers
Towel warmers
Plasmas off tub
Buckwheat, Down, or Tempur Pedic pillows
Slippers, Robes, and special arrival packages
I would go on, but you get the idea...
I give them 5 stars because they are the only 5 star hotel in town. If you are looking for old world Southern hospitality mingled with some amazingly beautiful historic architectural detail than this is your place.
I am mostly here to mention the Menes bathroom downstairs. I really hate public bathrooms and I can't think of much I find more repulsive than the men's public restrooms but my god this place is something. It has a shoe shining stand in it. More importantly when the hotel was restored the kept the art deco design motif that's been in there for ages. This is where they say dignitaries including presidents conducted business in this very bathroom. It's been featured nationally on the travel channel.
If you are looking for an off the beaten path thing to show an out of town guest that captures the history of Nashville then I say take them for a drink and a peruse of the Hermitage bathroom.
This is reputably the best and most luxurious hotel in town and it's not hard to understand why. The Hermitage has been around for about a century and still stands as richly elegant and beautifully articulated as it did when it was built. It was purchased and renovated in the early 2000's, mostly updating the guest rooms. The lobby is covered in the Italian marble it was originally built with and the detail work on the architecture is astounding.
It's a bit pricey to stay there, you're looking at rooms going for about several hundred dollars a night depending on the season and how booked they are, but if you're bank account will allow it, I wholeheartedly recommend staying here. Even if you are short on funds, you should at least go visit the hotel. It's one of the more beautiful buildings in Nashville, both inside and out and it's regularly featured on the Travel Channel.
It's located in the heart of Downtown just up the street from the Capitol, and is in convenient walking distance to a lot of cool sights and happenings in Nashville. They have a fantastic restaurant in the lobby called the Capitol Grille that's great if you're looking for a fancy place to have a date night or even somewhere to impress your business client. They also serve holiday buffets here, which is a great way to experience the hotel and its amenities without having to stay the night.
I've never eaten here, I've never stayed here, but I have been in the men's bathroom. (Say Huh?) And yes, I may have a bi-gender name, but I am female. The men's bathroom located in the hotel's restaurant has two very interesting and noteworthy amenities.
First off all, there is an entrance to a tunnel that supposedly leads to the Capitol building across the street. Rumor has it, that's how former politicians would get ladies of the night to visit them discreetly. Secondly, the bathroom is famous for it's 1970 art deco. There's even a little plaque explaining all this. It's not abnormal to find a group of girls wandering in to see both of these aspects.
Be careful though, my friends and I totally confused some foreign gentleman.
Absolutely beautiful historic hotel, impeccable service. I cannot come up with anything that could have been better! My husband and I stopped in with no reservation. Not only were we in luck, we got a top floor corner junior suite overlooking the Capitol. The room was so nice, we skipped going downtown for dinner and ordered room service. The bathroom...marble double vanity and shower, separate soaking tub with a flat-panel television, over-sized towels, and separate "water closet" (that would be toilet room for simple folk). I was saddened to come home to my own bathroom after that.
Aside from the usual amenities you expect from a full-service hotel (fitness center, spa, business services, etc), there is turn down service, three additional types of pillows stored in the closet if you don't care for down. luxurious bedding and bath products, afternoon tea (missed it darn it!), choice of newspaper delivery, and the list goes on. The hotel even offers a bath concierge-they will draw your bath to your desired temperature and allow you to select your salts-or rose petals! They are so damn service oriented, they might take a bath with you if you ask. They also take pets and offer special services to them as well. Crazy!
My husband really blew it with this one. We fly into Nashville about once a year. He better find discounted plane tickets to make up for my future stays here. It is expensive, but so worth it.
I LOVE it here! Definitely one of the nicest places I have ever stayed, and it spoiled me. We stayed here during our honeymoon, and it was certainly one of the highlights.
Staff is SO friendly and kind to everyone.
For breakfast at their restaurant, they made me a special vegan plate that left me feeling full (a tall order at most places for breakfast!).
Our room was beautiful, so elegant and spacious. Like Heather C., we stayed in the room as much as possible, because we didn't want to leave.
I loved Nashville before, and I love it even more now.
Fantastic for a special occassion restaurant. portions are perfect, flavorful. Very tasty.
AND CHECK OUT THE DECO BATHROOMS- they are a must-see.
Surprisingly, a limited menu, especially considering this is a 5 star hotel!! Just goes to show what hotel dining is all about.
The Hermitage Hotel is a real Five Star hotel. It's a safe bet, if a rock star is in town, they are staying at the Hermitage. It is really a beautiful hotel, just being in the lobby is a great experience. The lobby is very formal and ornate. The Oak Bar is a classy small place. I spotted Mr. Bon Jovi having a glass of wine here one evening. Oh boy, he looks as good as he does on the silver screen. Also, the Detroit Red Wings stay here every time they play against the Nashville Predators.
It's just a beautiful hotel that hosts some very notable guests. So, if you want to have the five star experience, stay at the Hermitage.
Older hotel completely remodeled and in top shape. Beautiful lobby and especially the ceiling, from times past. . Rooms were very well furnished - jacuzzi tub, fully enclosed tile shower, TV in the bathroom as well as bedroom, very functional air conditioning. Service from all the staff was top flight, competent and helpful. Wonderful cookies in the lobby in the afternoon and a cozy Oak Bar a flight below the lobby. Valet parking, and an easy walk down to Broadway or Second Avenue, the heart of the busy downtown area. I will stay there again.
I'm giving this place 5 stars without even having to stay here. That is because I am barely rich enough to take a piss in the john at this place.
This place is immaculate. It really isn't that expensive if you just get a regular room. The place sure looks real expensive though. The staff at this place is on point too. I came back around 1am, needed to grab something from my friend's car in valet. No problem. I needed a cab, we got a cab immediately.
The little pub downstairs is really nice as well. They make the drinks strong, just how I like it. If ya got the scrill, make sure to hit this place up.
First and foremost, the staff was truly exemplary, exuding a genuinely cordial yet polished and professional southern hospitality. The hotel itself is absolutely stately with fastidious attention to every detail as one would expect with regard to anything carrying the name of Andrew Jackson's fabled estate. The junior suite we stayed in was a luxuriously adorned blend of modern convenience and old world style providing a wonderful view of the greek architecture of Capitol Hill and ultimately making it an absolute ordeal to tear ourselves away.
My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night and decided to return for our 1 year anniversary last month. We don't usually live extravagantly, but this may have to be our annual exception!! The Hermitage is the ULTIMATE luxury. From the second you almost step in the door, to the second you pack up and leave, you are well taken care of. The hotel made every effort to make sure that we had a perfect stay, they even put us in the same room we were in on our honeymoon night! The bed is amazing, the bath and shower (seperate) are the best I've ever had. The business center is a nice touch. Lemonade and cookies in lobby in the afternoon. Cookies and water by your bedside in evening....
The list goes on!!! If you want to splurge a little, this is the place to do it!
My experience at this hotel was one of the highlights of my trip to Tennessee. After strolling through the ornate foyer we were greeted by friendly staff....Upon entering our large and comfortable victorian suite, the phone rang - "Was everything alright in the room?" Really nice touch.
Walked around the neighborhood (90 degrees at night, I like TN)- a few blocks distance to a lot of live music (including Tootsie's) and yet, if you want to chill in the room and order room service, you won't be disappointed. Take a bath, maybe a shower, slip on a classy robe and climb into the Frette sheets.
Only downside was that the bar downstairs was pretty dead, but it was a Sunday night, and anyways, you can walk to many bars easily.
I want to check out the other historical hotels, this one met my expectations!
I wish I could give The Hermitage Hotel five stars, but I just can't. For a hotel that is supposed to be Nashville's only five star hotel, I found it to be lacking in the customer service department. My in-laws booked my husband and I a room here for our wedding night, which was great. We were thrilled! They even booked a "wedding package" so the hotel was aware it was our wedding day. Well, our first mistake was that we didn't arrive before the wedding to check-in, but there just wasn't enough time in an already busy day! So, we arrived around midnight or 1 am after the reception and our room was nowhere to be found. No one told us that, but we waited a half hour while the front desk staff frantically searched around and tried calling numerous people and stared blankly into their computer screens. Finally they gave us keys to our room. We finally arrive in our room, and find that it had two double beds. Clearly not what we had reserved and not what ANYONE would reserve on their wedding night! They didn't bother to tell us that at the front desk. I was tempted to just accept it and just be happy we had any room at all. But knowing you just get ONE wedding night, I went downstairs to ask for a room with a king or even queen-size bed. They searched around for another 15 minutes or so and finally gave me a key for another room, which was on a lower floor than had been reserved, but we didn't mind that. Then, we ordered room service and after over 30 minutes, it finally arrived. Granted, it was 2 in the morning by this point.
The room itself was nice. It is not my style at all, as I prefer modern decor, but it is definitely fancy and "all that". We left in the morning wishing we had stayed in our own bed at home. Thankfully, they offered to comp the room, but it still didn't make up for having to wait almost an hour to GET to our room and the hassle it took to get there.
The Hermitage Hotel is one of the most beautiful historic hotels in the south, and definitely the nicest place to stay in Nashville. The hotel was modeled after Andrew Jackson's famous palatial estate of the same name and was crafted with italian marble, local hardwood and hickory, and serves as a beautiful remnant of the post-civil war rebuilding era architecture which has so sadly been disappearing from the south for years.
The guest rooms run at around 200-250 dollars, a price well worth it for such a 5-star stay, but if you use priceline and bid the right price in the area, you can get rooms on non-busy nights for under 100 bucks. The hotel has great specials on dinner at the beautiful 101 year old grille downstairs. This is a great place to stay whether you're traveling or just want to live it up for the night.
I stayed here for two nights during my wedding this past summer. My husband had a brilliant idea that we should get it the night before, so I could have a girls night and as well as a place for all of us girls to get ready in the day of our wedding. Well when I arrived at Union Station to check in (they said I could do early check in) my room was not ready. I was frantic to say the least! The day before my big day I was running late to a bridesmaid luncheon and had to pick up the dessert yet and I had my wedding dress in my trunk that had to be hung or it would had totally been wrinkled. The sweet lady who was at the concierge desk that day apologized profusely about the room not being ready and I said that is OK. She asked if I would like for her to take my wedding dress and keep it with her and as soon as the room was ready she would take it out of the garment bag. I was a bit nervous to just "hand" my wedding gown over to a complete stranger, but at this point I had no choice because I was late to lunch with about 12 other girls. There was something about the sweet concierge that was very calming she obviously had encountered this multiple times (frantic brides haha). She was angel! Well my husband to be called me because he wanted to go check on the room and said they will upgrade us to a suite for just a little extra! Well they did and when I got back to the room with the girls after our full day not only was my wedding gown taken out of the bag, she had hung it up and wrapped the train around the chair so it wouldn't get wrinkled! Our room was absolutely breath taking gorgeous! We had a huge bathroom, a huge sitting room, and a huge bedroom! It was so spacious for 5 girls getting ready plus 2 girls who were doing the hair and makeup! They also had placed a very nice amenity in our room...cheese and wine! I was amazed by how wonderful and professional their staff is. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a nice place to stay! It is so gorgeous and romantic!
The hotel is noted for it's grand reception space and it is beautiful; however, you don't sleep in the reception area. The staff were very courteous and friendly, so high marks to them. The rooms service was confused when we asked for a grilled cheese and croissants and tea, but it came to the room with the requested items. The grilled cheese was horrible and not something you'd expect when such detail and reputation was placed on The Hermitage's food reputation. The brunch the next day was a total flop. Wait service was great, but the food was unremarkable. I had pumpkin soup and my wife had the shrimp for the 1st course. The soup was tasty but lacked the finishing touches like you'd see in Vienna (where pumpkin soup is an art), i.e. pumpkin oil and pumpkin seeds on top. The 2nd course was O.K. but not consistent with what others had on their tables. The steak was very delicious and the dessert was unremarkable. My wife and I are seasoned travelers and have had brunches all over the world and this was by far one of the most unremarkable and lest filling we've had. Brunch should be fun and a social event, we didn't even get mimosa's with dessert and the staff had to be prompted to get bread and coffee and the staff spent more time on tables with larger tip potential than on ours. The prices for hotels in Nashville are overrated and the extra charges such as tax and room tax are nearly double what you pay for the room rate. You're paying New York prices at a location that can only be compared to dog-patch. The other expensive hotel in town, Opry-Land Hotel had a better rate for Valentines day and we kicked our selves for not going there...even though it's outrageously expensive too.
