I was told that The Hat had the world's best pastrami sandwich.. and so I was dragged here by my sister and her friends. We took a long drive and by the time we finally got there, I was starving.

The sign advertises how amazing their pastrami is, which makes my mouth water even more. I am about to enter into meaty bliss! I order and wait patiently for my food. When it comes... I lift it to my mouth in anticipation of "the world's best pastrami" and... wait for it.... it just wasn't.

I'm not saying it was that horrible.. but it wasn't anything special. It was pretty dry if you ask me. For the price I paid, I was pretty disappointed. Oh well.. lesson learned. If I want an actually good pastrami sandwich I'll stay local to where I live and go to Johnnie's Pastrami or Cinco De Mayo.

Stopped in yesterday for lunch since we were in the hood and, needless to say, I had great expectations since they have the "World's best pastrami or World's #1 pastrami" or something like that.  How do I know that?  It was on the sign!!!

The setting reminds me of something straight out of the 70s.  Dark panel walls with matching booths.  I don't mind that as long as the food is good.  Being from the midwest it's kinda welcoming.  With all the panelling, there's still a lot of natural light so it's not cave-ish or anything.

The line to order's almost out the door and it moved pretty quick.  The menu's on the backwall above the register and I notice that the sandwiches were pretty pricey ($7.79 each).  So my husband got the pastrami and I got the roast beef au jus.  With that we got a small fries and a small soft drink and a cup for water and our bill was almost $22.

Got our food pretty quick and the fries, even though, they were a size small came in a brown paper bag and was almost half full.  There were plenty of fries and they were actually pretty good, but needless to say, both of us couldn't eat it all.  Apparently, you can top your fries with their gravy or chili but being first timers here, we just wanted the basics.  The sandwiches had the soft bread with the meat in it (his pastrami and mine roast beef) and that's it.  I got the au jus with my roast beef and that came in a covered cup.  The roast beef was soft and good, but the au jus tasted like watery soy sauce.  It was a tad salty and made the sandwich wet.  If that's all you want for your jus, it did the job.  I kept thinking something was missing.  I guess I shouldn't compare it to the same sandwiches in Chicago where there were cheese and peppers in there but I wanted to try it in its intended form but had to get extra peppers from the counter but, alas, no cheese in sight.  The pastrami was alright too.  Nothing extra-ordinary and my husband actually liked my roast beef more than his pastrami.

I miss food like this when we travelled through Chicago and New York.  Full of flavors and came with everything on it.  There was hot dog on the menu too.  I was wondering what they put on the hot dogs here when you order one since all the condoments were in tiny packets on the front counter and not like those Chicago style hot dogs that once you ordered a dog, you would also get the pickles, relish, mustard, onions, tomatoes, ketchup handed to you and, of course, extra cheese to go with your fries as well.

Glad I tried it and have checked it off my list.  Kinda pricey so probably wont be back any time in the near future.

This place is awesome!!!  Portions are big so you do pay quite a bit for the food.

Chili cheese fries WITH pastrami are good for sharing.  I tried the BBQ pastrami sandwich and some of the chili hot dog.  Their food is so messy you HAVE TO get more napkins than usual.

    You MUST TRY CHERRY FANTA!!!

I'm actually not a pastrami lover, but still love The Hat!  As many have reported, the chili cheese fries are fantastic, a meal  in themselves.  My hubby is dying to try the pastrami fries which are humongous.  I love the hot dogs and onion rings.  The hamburgers for me are just ok. They have a great drink selection and service is pretty fast so don't let the long lines deter you.

The Pastrami was not as big as I expected but tasty non the less. The chili cheese fries were humongous. This is not the healthiest choice for lunch or dinner. I like to eat here once in a while due to its greasy food. I would recommend this place if you eat it every once in a while.

Pastrami sandwich, small fries and small soda $13.  This may sound pricey, but it can actually feed two people of you share the sandwich.  The pastrami was very tasty, bread was soft.  They have lots of condiments, chili peppers.  I saw someone get pastrami covered fries and they looked great and the chili fries smelled great.  I will be back to have the chili fries.  The small fries here are probably xx-large fries somewhere else.  Sodas are coke.  I can't stand a place that serves Pepsi.

This is not a place to come in if you're just feeling peckish. I repeat, this is not a place to come in if you're just feeling peckish.

The chili cheese fries is a pretty good amount of food for 3-4 people, and with most of those people being guys.

The pastrami is reportedly delicious (says my friends) as I've never actually tried it.. Seeing the grease get through several wraps of paper was enough to deter me. I hear it's definitely worth trying though.

My favorite thing here oddly enough is a drink called Orange Bang. Think of a less creamy Orange Julius. Delicious huh? I always get a large and there are free refills. Win win situation.

This location is also convenient to Claremont college and Mt. Baldy... A great place to fill up on all of those calories you've burned off after hiking that monstrous mountain.

    Oof.

Come here in pairs and share a sandwich.  Share some pastrami fries.

Otherwise it's too much. Too heavy. But tasty otherwise for goyishe pastrami.  I can say that as an honorary Jew.  I have it on the authority of my in-laws.

Now I want to go to Langer's for the best pastrami ever.

    See ya.

I grew up on the hat, since I was little going to the Alhambra location barely being able to peek over the counter.
    Their pastrami dips are phenomenal.
The grill cheese sandwiches are something not to be overlooked.
The chili cheese fries w/ pastrami on top, takes a two man team!
But my personal favorite at the HAT is the CHILI CHEESE DOG W/ EVERYTHING!!!.
I would give it a 5star but I must say their prices are a bit high, even though I will never stop visiting.

Be prepared to walk out w/ food colma, or a heart attack. You are guaranteed atleast one. =)

    Party of 5.

    Order:
Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries x 2.
    Cheesebuger (mines)
    Pastrami Dip x 3.

    Let's do the simple stuff first;

Cheeseburger - nicely charbroiled, fresh lettuce, tomatoe, pickles, etc. I will def. order this again for a good classic cheeseburger. I believe it was less than $3 bucks or so too!

Pastrami Dip Sandwiches - They were HUGE! Although the pastrami on the sandwich was the same ones on the fries, it was still yummy on a bun.

    Now to the big boy deal here;
The Pastrami FRIES!! Let's just say, we should've ordered 1, and it would've been good to share for the 5 of us!! It was FULLY LOADED with cheese, chili and TONS of Pastrami. There was so much pastrami, u could probably make half a sandwich w/ it! We had to take the other order home, and eat it as left overs. Lets just say, we were PASTRAMI-ED-OUT for a while!

Overall, a modest place to sit down & eat, does have A/C, an American classic. *Love the fact that they have a "self-serve" condiment area, and I mean atleast 10 to choose from. BUT, these are all INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED ones, so it's not like people w/ dirty hands are re-using spoons to get mustard, or mayo...etc. Oh yah, they have a HUGE tub of BANANA PEPPERS to go w/ ur sandwich or fries...yum!

I def. want to go back & try their cold sandwiches!

I'm partial to this particular location since this was my initial foray, eventually turning into an infatuation for this place. This was way back in the day, circa late 80s-ish, meaning circa 8th-grade-ish for me. Ok so I'm getting old, so what? My love affair for "The Hat" has never wavered since, so here we go...

When a place screams "WORLD FAMOUS PASTRAMI SINCE 1951," why would you not try their pastrami and proceed to give the place less than 3 stars? These yelpers should be fined for such ignorance. I'm here to set the record straight. Come to "The Hat" and try their pastrami squashed between a soft-hoagie roll. Inside the sandwich the plain mustard and sour pickles perfectly accents and balances the chewy shredded strips of salty pastrami (I like mine double-dipped, nice, soft and buttery going down). Trust me, you'll keep coming back for more.

And when you do come back please bring a small army with you. Then, please oh please order my favorite on their menu, the chili cheese fries. My absolute 'coup de grace' from this fine establishment of  fast-food dining. Their version of chili cheese fries just slays me, it's so good. The chili they whimsically pile over the thick crispy, golden fries, is sweet and 'stick-to-my-ribs' savory, just the way I like it, as I top it off with packets and packets of ketchup. Sure wish they had a squeeze bottle available. This would make my life easier. When my friends and I are feeling adventurous and have a bottle of the pink stuff on hand, we pile on our order with pickles, tomatoes, and pastrami, easily upping the already pitcher's mound height way above sea level.

Sure they offer burgers, cold sandwiches, steak sandwiches, chili dogs, etc... But honestly, I stick with what I know, and what's kept me coming back for 20+ years: the pastrami, the atomic pile of chili cheese fries, regular fries, and the perfectly breaded and deep-fried onion rings, which I can bite into and not have the whole onion follow, leaving me with a lonely shell of batter.

I love "The Hat." 4.5 stars. Anyone giving this hallowed place 3 stars or below should be sucker-punched/face-palmed with a heaping dollop of their sweet chili. See how you like that, haters!!!

The prices have gone up over the years.  Average wait time after ordering is 4-7 minutes at this location.

You can shamelessly hoard the plates and napkins.

A lot of people love the pastrami fries...but I just order a chili cheese fries and pastrami dip.  Just let the pastrami spill out generously and it's the same thing.

I would not recommend the BBQ Beef / Roast Beef.  For the BBQ Beef the sauce over compensates for the lack of natural beef flavor.  The Roast Beef is just the BBQ Beef without the sauce and thus has no flavor.

Steak sandwich is not bad but if you come here I'd stick to the pastrami related items (pastrami burger/pastrami dip).

    Who doesn't love The Hat?!

In the late 90's (ugh - that long ago?!) it was the place I went to while in college. It was nearby, not necessarily cheap, but good.

Now The Hat is the "on-my-way-to-Palm-Springs" dinner stop.  My husband loves it, I love it, and even though it sits like a rock in my stomach as we drive to the desert, we won't stop anywhere else.

He gets the Pastrami every time, I usually switch it up between a Beef Dip, Cheeseburger, Chili Cheeseburger or something equally as healthy.  Their Chili Cheeseburger beats Tommie's anyday. I love their fries and we one time made the mistake of getting chili fries and it was nuts.  Way too much food, it would have easily been our entire meal.

Hands down best chili cheese fries! I usually get an order and end up sharing it with a group of friends. My bf went ahead and ordered the pastrami which was full of meaty goodness. He said the pastrami was thinly sliced which was still pretty good considering pastrami generally has thicker slices. Overall, pretty good for what you pay for, and I guess the pastrami dip comes with..no dip? I'm guessing the pastrami was probably dipped and I didn't see anyone else in the restaurant with dip when they were enjoying their pastrami sandwiches.

My favorite is still the chili cheese fries, can't go wrong with that!

If you have gone here for health food, you are in the very wrong place. However, their food is delicious nonetheless, and it is a family tradition to go here every Halloween and sometimes birthday parties.

First off, the chili fries are amazing. I have no idea what makes them so good, but they are the best I have ever had. The fries are not crispy, but I like that, because you have to eat it with a fork, my favorite way to eat chili-fries. The portions are huge, and for around six bucks (as of my last trip in 2010), you get a huge plate that you can share with another person. The other menu items are also delicious, like the Pastrami, chili burger, chili dog and cold cut sandwiches. Portions are very generous, and I often find myself with leftovers of some kind. Prices are also reasonable.

The interior of this place looks like it hasn't been updated since the 1940's, but I like it. It is a basic wood interior that reminds me of old time diners, and there are pictures and newspaper clippings in the building to show the history behind the Hat. Restrooms are generally clean, and offer a great amount of privacy (no stalls, but a lock on the door). The rest of the restaurant is regularly cleaned, but expect some split cheese and chili from people's meals that have spilled recently.

I have been going here as long as I can remember, and have always had great experiences. The employees are friendly, the store is clean and the food is cheap and delicious. To anyone that is complaining about the lack of health food or vegetarian options, quit your bitching. You don't go to a steakhouse looking for vegetarian options, so why would you go here looking for health food?

So as I was reading the Pastrami thread, I had the craving to get some chili cheese fries with pastrami on top.

The food is good and portions are huge.  I usually can't finish the whole thing.  I would eat 1/2 of it and save the rest for tomorrow.

The Hat in Upland is open until 1AM during the weekdays which is nice.  It's close to where I live, and open late nights.  I know eating so late isn't the best for your digestive system.  I'm going to be feeling it tomorrow, however it satisfies my late night cravings.

Unbelievably great fast food.  The chili burger is overloaded with great tasting chili. A huge amount of fries is served on the regular order, always fresh and hot.  Counter service where you are given your meal in a sack whether it is take-out or dine-in.

I have probably sampled everything at least once on the vast menu and it's all good. Whether you order a hot or cold sandwich, it's huge in comparison to the competition. The tuna sandwich must have a half pound of tuna, along with lettuce and tomato on fresh bread.  Even the single patty burgers are large in comparison to what you are served at most fast food restaurants.  Large, clean indoor seating as well as take out.  You won't be disappointed.

The biggest disappointment I have with "The Hat" is that they are not located throughout California, if only there were more locations.

    Great value, great product.

.., whoever says the Hat sucks is full of it in my opinion. Everything is tasty here & generous at that. Ricardo Cortez, if you're reading this, this one is for you baby!

We're all searching for the world's best pastrami. Yeah I know, because so am I. But you can't knock The Hat off because their take on it is pretty damn good.

Many people grew up on this place. I started eating here when I was in 7th grade. If you're in your mid 40's, a Southern California native eating here for the 1st time I don't know what rock you've been hiding under?

The fries here are great, but you'd be a fool to order a round for everyone in your party because 2 can easily share 1 order. The pastrami is great, the roast beef w/ au jus is great, the chilli fries are great, the hot dogs, & onion rings are great. The list goes on, but that's only what I've gotten so far. I usually get the pastrami burger. I always walk away satisfied from this bad boy. Even if hungry, it can still turn on me & become a gut buster.

The price$ aren't cheap, I've spent $20 easy on just 2 people. Orange Bang on tap, I love this place! Don't listen to "the hype", come in here hungry & open minded. Because "hype" doesn't help anyone ever. I've made that mistake & unfortunately sometimes still do amongst many others when trying new restaurants. Leave it & the front door for Chuck's sake, were talking pastrami here!!!

This is the best "The Hat" anywhere in southern California. My favorite is the chili cheese fries topped with pastrami. I think that is all i ever get there now. One order can literally feed 3-4 people and make a small child obese for a year.

My favorite thing about this one in particular is that its a trucker stop and therefore its open until 2:00a. I didn't realize this, but not many of the other ones are open past 11:00p or 12:00a.

I happened to be in Upland, after visiting a coin shop nearby.  I was just gonna stop by the Temple City location, but found out that The Hat also had an Upland spot.  I called for directions and the lady on the phone was very friendly.

I ordered the chili cheese fries and the pastrami dip.  The fries filled me up, no surprise, so I took the sandwich home without taking a bite.  I know it is good, because I have had it before at other locations.  It wasn't too packed, so I liked that compared with the other locations.

Yeah. I'm a fan. I wish i could eat here on the daily.

Location: Off Central, in a very open lot.  Parking is no problem, they have drive though and stay open late.

Atmosphere: Chill place. I like everything about it. Its authentic for a sit in, drive through burger place.

Service: Order and thou shall receive.

Food: Astonishing. Proportions are generous and taste combination are good. Basic things such as gravy fries are enough to fill me. If you want to go bold, order the pastrami fries.  I'm pretty sure there is a picture of it somewhere.  I wish to see Man Vs. Food take on the P. fries. I have full confidence he can do it, its just I have never been close, nor have I heard of it being done. Dip Sandwiches are good, and simple things like the grilled cheese are fabulous.

Sanitation: Good, I hope. It is what is to be expected from a burger joint like this.

Overall: Great place. always a top 4 choice in choosing between fast food.

Everyone loves this place, but I can't speak for everyone. In my one personal experience here I thought The Hat is mediocre at best. To be fair, I did NOT (which I REGRET) have their "FAMOUS PASTRAMI" so that in itself might be a handicap to the review.

The restaurant does have an older feel to it, nothing post-modern like the new Jack in the Boxes you see everywhere. It's roomy, with plastic tables and chairs which I think are built into the ground. It has lots of windows so a lot of natural light comes in. You can see the kitchen and everything's made hot and fresh.

My friends were smart, one ordered the pastrami sandwich and the other ordered a BBQ beef (I think). Both looked delicious. I decided to be a smart ass and ordered the Roast Beef with au jus. Sounds delicious right? I mean hot roast beef? How could it go wrong? Well, it went really wrong. It was dry meat between dry bread. And when I dipped it into the juice it was like salty juice. So I made soggy salty bread/meat by combining them.

I'm disappointed I didn't go with the safe bet and get the pastrami. I heard their fries are amazing too but I won't know until I try them. All the hype and I blew it.

I will update this accordingly when I get the opportunity to eat here again. Do I look forward to it? A little.

Absolutely GREAT pastrami. And the burgers aren't half bad, either.

I grew up w the hat and I remember this guy who worked there for Soooooooo long! Always drive through... white guy, long hair... he was cool. Now they have a completely different staff... the food is still good, but just a tad different then what it used to be... my sisters n I used to ritually watch the new melrose place every week with those chili fries n burgers...  very very good food. Didn't care much for the chicken salad sandwich they have.. but the bbq beef, pastrami, hot dogs, burgers, and chili cheese fries w tomato n pickles are just out of this world! !!  Oh!... and the "chili dog" is to die for!  Mmmmmmmm.

Pastrami is my favorite delicatessen meat out there.  The way pastrami is cured in brine...the different spices that are soaked and delved into a piece of pastrami, (garlic, black pepper, coriander, paprika, cloves, and mustard seed) There's only one word to describe it correctly:

    MmMMMmMMmmMMmmmmMmmMMm!

So you can imagine my enthusiasm when I made my first trip out to The Hat, which boasts of having the worlds best pastrami. After I ate here and left the Hat, would i agree with that slogan? Most definitely.

Since, I'm a burger fanatic, I ordered the Pastrami Burger and fries. Vicki V ordered the Roast Beef and dip.

I don't know if my hunger was making me go crazy, but i swear the burger growled at me when i held it. It was monstrougly-HUGE! As for the taste? It was exquisite.  The pastrami burger was served on a french roll that was slathered with mustard at the inside of both rolls. The patty was succulent and well done. Lettuce and tomatoes were fresh, pickles added crunchy texture, and only enhanced the delicious salty flavor of the meat. And the pastrami itself?...incredible.

The pastrami was pinker and tastier than any pastrami I have ever eaten. The spice rub seems thicker, more dominated by mustard seed. What makes it special is that most pastrami places cook their meat incorrectly, so the result would be a rubbery, hard-to-tear-pastrami. Not at this place. The Hat manages to cook it perfectly so every bite into the patty burger would easily get a bite of the pastrami.

I had a bite of Vicki V.'s roast beef dip and it was decent. I actually think Arby's does a better job of that, but Pastrami is what the Hat is known for, so make sure to get the pastrami!

If this place wasn't so darn far away from my house, I'd go here every week.  One thing's for sure, I'll be coming back!
    ------------
    Extra Notes:
-I loved how they double bag everything at this place. You can bet that the oil of the french fries and pastrami still seep through though!
    -Open Late! Yes!
-Decor fit the 1950's socal feel very well.  Pale colored, tiled floors. Brown cushioned seats, with orange/yellow backing. Clean.
-Restrooms were clean, but only one toilet for a big fast food restaurant?
    -Needs to have more locations

I tried the hat because my friend recommended it as a good burger joint.
I came back because of the chili cheese fries. They are amazing!!!!
They are so big, you can't possibly eat them all in one sitting.

I also, recently, tried the pastrami sandwich. It was just the right amount of greasy.

I only go here sometimes because it is a heat attack waiting to happen. If you are watching your figure or just trying to stay healthy, then don't stop here. Otherwise, it's a great place to eat.

Hefty, greasy portions; great chili cheese fries. Get a pastram burger if you think you can handle it. Half the time I can't eat all my food here and every time I can't breathe for at least an hour.

The Hat is a great place to come to kill a major hunger if you're in the mood for American Cuisine.

While usually crowded, they serve up the food pretty quickly and in huge quantities. The favorites here for the pastrami and onion rings while my personal favorite is the chicken salad sandwich. The onion rings themselves can be a meal! They have a drive-thru bit it is usually pretty packed so I'll just park and go inside.

If you're in the area I recommend stopping by and giving it a shot.
