I finally made it to the Harbor Room last Saturday nite. It's great when you can walk into a bar on a Saturday nite and have it nearly empty, get a stellarly strong drink and play some good tunes on a jukebox.
The crowd is eclectic and friendly and everyone is there to have a good time.
I'm not sure that it is actually SMALLER than Tiki Ti, honestly. I think it's just laid out differently (since it's essentially a triangular bar). But, maybe. It's a great dive that's not too far from home and I will be back again and again.
*** 10' by 10' maximum but they serve liquor ... burp! (lol) ***
i swear this place should have its own movie made for it.
it's that quintessential dive bar near the beach, y'know?
the one where James Dean would make some kinda
convoluted emotional soliloquy just before plunging
off a seaside cliff in an old Chevy traveling 60 mph.
*** one jukebox, one bartender, old patrons ... drink up. ***
LA Law in real life!
If you want to see drunk middle aged beach locals that have poofy hair, this is the place for you. Parking is not too bad. It's a small joint with lots of drunk folks. There may be a cougar or two there, so watch your back. Go here for booze and get a taste of the real Playa.
Don't half step. Order something that requires a fruity garnish.
My degenerate drunk friend loved this place when he came out from Phoenix last summer. I live a few blocks away from the Harbor Room, and he said he was taking a walk before we headed out to the beach. Next thing I know, he was sitting in one of the 5 or so bar stools drinking Citron and Sevens at 10am, surrounded by what seemed to be a crew of ex-sailors who were intent on getting equally sloshed. An hour later, the bartender was begging us to take our friend with us, but he refused, and continued to get served. So I would have to say that if you get kicked out of Mo's or Prince of Wales down the street, hit up the Harbor Room and see if they will serve as your enabler of last resort.
From what I understand, this is the smallest bar in LA county.
As big as my bathroom, but more fun. Had my first Newcastle Brown Ale here. Good times.
Love it.
A tiny, easy place to go with a (small) group of friends.
The jukebox is cheap, and since the place is so small, you will hear your songs soon, if not immediately. Be warned: the jukebox selection is wonderful, but the most modern CD is the "Sleepless in Seattle" soundtrack.
Also, if you're bored, there's a pile of paperback books featuring a lot of Tom Clancy.
fun times. great bartender.
I discovered long ago the joys that the Harbor Room can bring. You can show up with a small group and basically take over the joint. It has everything you need...jukebox, check! Touchscreen photohunt...check! Really strong drinks...check!
Add the fact that their last call takes place about 15 minutes later than all the other bars in Playa and you got yourself a winner!
Bar is cash only though so hit up the ATM first.
Definitely the smallest bar in PDR. I have some great memories from here. The bar is small, the drinks are strong, the crowd are locals, and the environment is divey. You can smoke in doors and the bar cash only
What more could you want from your local dive spot?
Simply love it!
"It's not the size that matters." Well, maybe that's not true for *all* things, but in this case, the saying definitely fits. The smallest bar in Los Angeles County, this is the place for a REAL drinking man (or lady). Lots of locals, a mostly older crowd of serious boozers. Fantastic juke box and VERY strong drinks. They even have a shelf or two of free books, so you can go alone and still have a great time. A real dive, in the best possible sense.
Hole in the wall. The place is tiny but a favorite. The clientele is eclectic just like Playa. A lot of old folks mixed in with college students. The jukebox has great country music. Definitely a drinkers bar. Strong cheap drinks. You go to the Harbor Room to drink...it's what you do...never what could happen after. Be careful where you sit...You might be in Local's seat.
perfect after work place to go get a few beers. last time i went i was wearing a baseball cap and got called "sir" but hey, whatever, just gimme a cold beer and it's all good.
absolutely no scene here, nothing fancy, just the regulars getting their drink on. and siamak is right, the bar's for the locals, it's either find a stool elsewhere or SRO for y'all other folk.
Come see a real Playa bar. Cheap booze, cash only. One of the tiniest bars in LA, smaller in fact than Tiki Ti. No Yacht Rock in the jukebox: Cash, Beach Boys, Sam Cooke. Stumbling distance to home. Hit the P.O.W. during the day, come here at night -- if you really wanna Bukowski your day, come here in the afternoon.
Big pours, Merle Haggard's "Misery And Gin" on the jukebox, and an old pull-rod cigarette machine (that now dispenses T-shirts, alas). It's apparently the smallest bar in LA county. The bartender wears a giant Lakers belt-buckle and the crowd is appropriately older and leathery. This is a bar, my friends, for people who drink.
