3 words: sweet potato fries! Order them, you will not be disappointed! They come with this spicy mayo sauce and are made to perfection, it's a must have whenever I come here, no matter what I get with. The Half King is a great place to go for a bite to eat and hang out or a drink after work. This local pub is filled with all types of people from the performers who stroll in from UCB and the surrounding stages to the athletes who make their way over from Chelsea Piers after their ice hockey game. If you're lucky, you'll get one of their couches in the 2nd room which makes for a comfortable setting to eat, drink and watch the people around you in the bar. I also especially love this place since it is where I met my love. I also happen to live on the same block :)

Man cave-y.
That's really all that comes to mind when I think about Half King.
Pub-y.
And man cave-y.
It's dark, with warm wood furnishings and a great beer and wine list. It did remind me a little of my favorite pub in Dublin, but is much more man cave-y. The boys loved it.

If you're looking for good mussels, you have no choice but to go here! It's not your typical white wine mussels.. the broth has more of a curry flavor to it, which make it great. I always order plain fries (though the sweet potato fries are good) alongside just to eat with the broth.
If you're not hungry, this is a great bar anyway. One side has your typical dimly lit boisterous bar with TVs and a solid selection of beers and the other dining side is great for sitting and chatting with friends. You can also hang out outdoors if the weather permits.
It's unfortunate that such a nice looking place can be so unpleasant to customers. As the place itself goes it's got a nice decor and a little outdoor type seating areas in the front and back.
However, the staff at this place is so terrible to its customers that I will not return. I was there with a large group on a Wednesday afternoon and the staff could not be more inhospitable. We gave them a heads up a week before coming, but that didn't help. It seemed like a big chore to serve us even though we were paying with a corporate card (and therefore going to spend a lot). For an early afternoon mid-week we were going to bring in more business and tips than they were going to get all night, but that still didn't give them any interest in serving us and treating us with even an average level of respect.
I'd like to say this was an isolated incident where someone was having a bad day, but I have had the misfortune of being there another time which was equally disappointing.
We ended up leaving the bar after about 30 min and heading a few blocks down to Flight 151 where we racked up a very sizeable tab to the happy bartenders and waitresses' delight.
Please avoid this place at all costs until there is a major change in staff. There are plenty of nicer bars nearby that appreciate their patrons and do their job well to give this place another chance.
The Half King Bar on the corner of 23rd and 10th Ave is a welcome respite from the trendy watering holes found in Chelsea. The food is always good (especially the chili nachos) and while the wait staff can be hit or miss, the service at the bar is always first rate(Keith the bartender is polite and professional). The music selection varies from classic 60`s rock to mod club music, and the draft specials for $4 beer (and hard cider) run from 5 to 8. There is outside seating in good weather, and the dining room has a cozy appeal.
Half King is a great place to hang out. Plenty of tables and booths, offset by charming brick and warm yellow walls.
They have plenty of beers on tap and have a good menu, although I've only had the standard bar food here. The fried calamari and potato skins are top notch.
this place is a refuge on the west side who would rather grab a beer than listen to house music. so I will credit the bar with that. the place has long wood tables and the tap selection is pretty descent.
the waitresses though - not the best. i saw another person that reviewed the bar had a similar experience. don't expect the A - squad for the staff.
While crashing at a friend's place around the corner we came in here late one morning to discover that their brunch is fit for a king. Sorry for the bad pun I just couldn't help it, but seriously the food was great. And our waitress was just as amazing and told us how she named her cat Racecar, or rather that a young child had name it for her!

After chatting up the lovely ladies with the sliders at the Yelp Passport to Chelsea event, we decided to check out the Half King. I saw a few familiar faces engrossed in a conversation and so we moseyed on over to another room and took a seat by the window.
The bench style seating was comfortable and allowed for an interesting conversation regarding the quality of life in Europe vs. US. In the end I stopped paying attention and started eating my fried deliciousness. I love bar food and while everything was fried nothing was greasy. Good times and if I'm in the neighborhood and want to meet a friend for a drink I'd totally return. Especially if it's during happy hour, which the sign on the table said is until 8pm. Cool place to have a conversation.
Also, I just have to note, that the outdoor seating has a separate smokers section which I love, who the hell wants to smell like someone else nasty cigarette? Keep the Cancer causing toxins to yourself. Thank you very much.

I came to Half King on a bad date once, with a hottie-patootie that had everything a girl would want, except for a clue. *sigh* Fast forward a few years, to the Yelp Passport to Chelsea Launch Party ( http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and there I was again, doubtful yet determined to utilize my drink tickets.
I knew the company would make or break the place when I was standing in line waiting to be ID'd, and the host was hitting on the man-candy ahead of me... "are you a Libra?" *giggle* "No? I could've sworn!" *looks at ID* "Your ID picture makes you look like a Scorpio" *giggle* ... foreseeing that the bathrooms would soon be busy with red-hot-star-gazing, I wished I had peed before leaving the Chelsea Art Museum. Oh well. It's our turn to be ID'd and lo and behold, said host actually noticed that Sarita M and I have the same birthday. That dude is on his game.
[side note: I've secretly hoped for years that someone would think that Sarita M and I have fake IDs, but unfortunately, no one seems to doubt the fact that either of us is over 21 *sob*]
Anyway, the usual suspects of the Yelp Elite gang were filling a booth to the brim, so the 3 of us decided to grab a fantastic seat by the window with couches. PERFECT. What ensued was a night filled with delight. The temperature of the bar was just right, the beer was cheap and yummy, Alex Y entertained us while we nibbled at super-fried sweet potato fries (3 stars), chicken fingers (3 stars) and perfectly cooked and seasoned fried calamari (4 stars) until Cris M joined the party to scarf down a sirloin burger with Swiss cheese (verdict on said burger was "it's no Bruckner burger but it was definitely scarf-down-worthy" = 4 stars)... All that at about $20 per person! SCORE!
Half King, I'm sorry I held that bad date against you, I don't know why I did... It never stopped me from going back to Pepe Giallo... But I want you to know I'm here for you again, and again, and again.

So, armed with drink tickets and still peckish from not eating enough at the Yelp Passport to Chelsea Event (because I was concentrating on drinking and wandering about), my friend and I made our way to this place.
We ran into fellow yelpers outside and then wandered in to sit down and get some food. We were promptly seated, given menus and asked if we were from the Yelp event. Yes ma'am, we were! So we ordered beer.
And chicken fingers and onion rings. The chicken fingers were OK, nothing too spectacular. The onion rings, well, let's just say I could fry another batch of them with the oil in our dish. Too greasy and not enough batter.
However, I liked that they had the $4 beer special going on till 8, and with our drink tickets we could extend that. Our waitress was really, really nice and kept coming to ask if we were OK or if we needed anything without being overbearing. And, apparently I was seated at the "speed chatting" table because all manner of Yelpers stopped by to chat and then rotate into someone else. I don't know if it was the establishment that caused this or my charming self (HA!), but it just made it easier to sit back and drink my beer.
So I am not going to come back for the food, but if I wanted a place to hang out when in the area, I would come back here.
A-OK

I stopped by here after the Yelp Passport to Chelsea event to hang with other Yelpers. PlusOne and I didn't have the $4 draft coupons, but the Half King peeps gave us $4 drafts anyway. The servers were extremely nice. I thought their prices and drink specials weren't even bad in the first place.
The bar is much bigger on the inside than it seems from the outside. Parking was super easy. The stars are just adding up for this one!
Since we had already grabbed a slice at J's, we didn't try the food - however, this is a nice neighborhood bar with a good vibe. Four happy stars :)

The Half King seemed to suffer from "That's not part of my job description" syndrome last night.
I arrived at 10pm to meet a fellow yelper who was already drinking at the bar on the left side of the venue but I wanted to order food. The server told us we had to sit on the other side of the restaurant, but that she couldn't seat us, only the hostess could.
So we went to the entrance and asked to be seated, where the hostess said: "You can't just switch sides like that, you know. You have to pick a side." My friend explained that he had been paying cash at the bar and didn't have a tab to settle, and that I had just arrived. She sighed and made a face as though we were asking her to do anything but her job.
She marched ahead and put some menus on the table. I was about to fake a smile and thank her for seating us but she didn't even dignify us with eye contact, instead she just marched off.
The server on the restaurant side of Half King was fairly attentive but seemed equally unimpressed to be employed by the place. I ordered a $16 mac and cheese that I hoped would be something magical as it was a combination of four cheeses (mozzarella, cheddar, goat and cotija), broccoli and tomato but instead it was bland as shit. The mozzarella slices were literally placed haphazardly on top of the noodles and hardly melted. The goat cheese was a giant unmixed blob and there were absolutely NO other seasonings to be found in the pasta. There were two broccoli florets and a couple of tomato slices throughout. It tasted like reheated mac and cheese and for $16 it was a bit outrageous. Honestly, I only ate it because I was famished.

Sometimes you need a spot you can just lean into. In my neighb, the Half King fits the bill perfectly. It's as nice in warm weather as it is when it's freezing and you can stay as long as you like without ever being bothered.
Sip a raspberry lambic from a champage glass, Delirium Tremens straight from the bottle or a pint of Brooklyn Lager.
If you're feeling peckish, don't miss the specials, which recently featured chili nachos: a heaping portion of blue corn tortilla chips topped with chili and melted cheese accompanied by generous cups of guacamole, sour cream and salsa. I always order a side of steamed veggies for good measure as the quality is amazingly nice for a pub.
The Half King's a reliable, solid choice in West Chelsea.

Duvel + $8 weenies (6 mini hot dogs in a blanket). We actually just ordered the weenies to see how much they cost versus Fresh Direct. For the record, and as expected, FD is cheaper at $1 per dog.
The outdoor courtyard is teeny, but bright. The table next to us broke a bottle of ketchup and then fled the scene. We actually followed suit to get some of the indoor fan action on a hot day.
Always a good time. Had we not just had copious amounts of champagne and Duvel, we might have ordered their jalapeno poppers, which are délicieux.
Pubs, bars and restaurants come and go in New York but the Half King, is something of a survivor. Opened in 2000, it's a very comfortable, settled, stress-free pub with decent food and beer at a fair price. Best of all, it's in Chelsea - convenient to galleries, interesting shops, the high-line and everything else. You can come in here, sit, order a decent burger and cold beer and leave with some money still in your pocket. Service is friendly and the crowd is mellow. What more do you want?

Note - this is a review of the restaurant, not the bar.
With only an hour to spare between waiting in line at UCB & the show, we ran over to Half King to squeeze in a quick dinner. Sweet potato fries? Love em!! Delish dipping sauce included as well. Mmm.
Unfortunately I had a minor brain fart & ordered a Bud Light to accompany my meal.
Ugh.
Fortunately my boyfriend finished it so it didn't manage to ruin my entire meal (seriously, Bud Light, what was I thinking).
Our waitress was speedy & got us in & out in the time we needed. Nice outdoors/patio area in front but with its location there's not exactly anything interesting to be looking at.
Good thing there were plenty of sweet potato fries to be taking my full attention. No time to be distracted by anything else.

Ate lunch here. Great burger and fries. Nice atmosphere (long bar, wooden booths, assorted tables, outdoor tables). Windows in back room. Cool b&w photos. Got beers on another occassion. Good selection but it was very crowded (standing rm only) and kind of noisy (hard to carry on a conversation)
This place has a great atmosphere and rather good drinks and food. I've had the macaroni and cheese twice, and I've brought a variety of people to this place, all of whom became fans themselves. Glad that it also serves Pimms and Lemonade, a rarity on this side of the Atlantic.
The Half King also has readings on Mondays. The one I had gone to with Benjamin Nugent was quite worth it. It can get rather packed then though, so plan accordingly.
Went there for an early dinner after visiting the Highline. It was a bit soggy outside so we sat inside (they should take down that scaffolding). The interior, like the menu, is more fun then most places in the area. Although eating a long meal at one of those couches might not be fun for some (get a table). It also got a bit loud at times even without music.
Service was a bit slow but the prices are acceptable and a few things on the menu are nice (blueberry beer, jalepeno poppers with cream cheese). We also were delivered the wrong check.
The decor and the food are fun but the service needs work.
My husband and I used to frequent The Half King every Sunday night, but our busy work and travel schedules don't afford us that luxury anymore. :( But we go there whenever we can because it's a great standby when we're in the mood for pub food. And what great pub food it is. I've read other Yelp reviews extolling the goodness of the sweet potato fries, but it's the mac and cheese that deserves all the praise. Topped with broccoli, bacon and chunks of mozzarella, this mac and cheese is the best I've ever had anywhere. We have taken many friends - from out of town and from other neighborhoods in the city - there, and to a man, they have all raved about it.
And the mac and cheese isn't the only savory item on the menu: the fish and chips; turkey, avocado and mango wrap; hummus platter (ask for extra pita bread); burgers; even the house salad are sure to please. The portions are huge, and the beer selection is substantial.
There is plenty of seating at the Half King, albeit in a left brain, right brain fashion. Owned in part by "A Perfect Storm" author Sebastian Junger, the Half King hosts weekly book readings which take place in the larger dining area. The dining area is also home to a revolving gallery where photojournalists exhibit their work. There are booths near the bar, and that's the side that can get rowdy at times. More tables are in the back garden and a small "lounge" area, and in the summer smokers enjoy eating and smoking outside.
I'm not going to lie to you; the Half King isn't perfect every time. It can be insanely crowded there some nights, and when that happens, the service is slow. The waitstaff is friendly - most of the time - and if you're nice and take care of them, they will take care of you. Overall, this is a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy a lot of beer and comfort food.
This should be 3.5 stars. Why doesn't yelp allow for something between a-okay and yay! I'm a fan? There should be a "this is good, but NYC (fill in the blank city) has a lot to offer so I'm not sure how much I'll be back" sort of an option? Anyhow... on to my review...
Stumbled on this place on Friday night when the line at the Shake Shack was miserable, and post discovering that the beer garden in Chelsea that my boyfriend wanted to try didn't exist. It was good! The crowd was a bit rowdy, lots of players from some sports league... and the place was very loud. The food was good, they had Blue Point Blueberry on tap (good for spring!). I had the turkey, mango avocado wrap, which was good and filling, and he had the mexican burger. We were both very satisfied. I have to say though, the best part of our meal were the sweet potato fries, probably the best I've ever had. If you come here, you will be doing yourself a disservice by not ordering them. They are excellent!
I came here after the Yelp Passport to Chelsea event as this was the location of the after party. We went and sat down at a table on the patio as it was a nice night. Well, unfortunately, the night got dim as soon as our oh so sunny waiter approached. He was very unpleasant and rushing us to order something before we even sat down. I mean could we get some menus? We might want some food? Just nasty. I mean you are a waiter approaching a table full of attractive well dressed women and your first instinct is to be a douche? Second star was for the wine, it was pretty good, however I will not be returning to this place again.

A pretty good pub spot, about a ten minute walk from the Javitz Center. I waited about ten minutes to be seated with a group of four. Service was excellent despite the Friday crowd.
We ordered a plate of nachos, which was heavy on the toppings and light on the chips. For once, I found myself longing for more chips -- but I suppose that ain't a bad problem.
I ordered their Mexican burger, which seemed to me in all respects just like a normal burger. Couldn't really discern what the toppings were beyond the normal lettuce and onions. Oh well.
The bar area is a little crowded but the tap more than makes up for it. If I was in the neighborhood again I'd definitely give Half King another shot.

Came here a couple times with colleagues after work for drinks and food! I would never come to Half King if it wasn't close to where I work.
A good spot to come to grab some beer after gallery hopping in the area!!
First, I know this is a bar, but why does every surface in that bar is slimy and sticky?
The food portions are pretty good....I would do shares if your here for drinks and just wants to snack on some food.
Beware that it's far from the subway....
The Half King is cozy in winter and lovely in summer--if you can get a seat on the back patio rather than in the makeshift area out front--so it's a nice standby when you're on the West Side and looking to meet up with people.
I like the food and drink menus, though I've never necessarily had an amazing meal there. Burgers, sandwiches, seafood, and other comfort foods are definitely acceptable, and the beer list is pretty great. I especially love the summer ales.
The after-work scene is crowded and kind of a drawback in my opinion, and the staff gets pretty harried. But for a weekend dinner or early drinks, it's overall quite nice.
I had never heard of this place and probably wouldn't have gone looking for it if it weren't for a friend who lived in the neighborhood and invited a couple of us for after work drinks. She is a regular and now I can see why. The place is pretty cozy.. and I don't mean small.. I mean that you get the feeling you're in a log cabin and while you're sitting on one of the couches with friends over drinks(I didn't drink but I did order the sweet potato fries, which were delicious!).. you get that home-like feeling of warm come over you. My friend ordered the pigs in the blankets since it was a special and gobbled them right up. We stayed probably for a good 3 hours just chatting away. It definitely felt like a weekend while we chilled there on a Tuesday night. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.. it's worth the trek "to the other side of the universe" as one of my friend's called it. Ha.
Ok, so the owner contacted directly and apologized and sent me a gift certificate to give them another try, so we're up to 3 stars here for effort, I will update again after I've actually eaten there, but so far so good, I appreciate an owner who takes Yelp seriously!

WORST SERVICE EVER
Went in this past Sunday for brunch arrived on time, ordered in a timely fashion,… Read more »
Dinner here was alright... beer selection is also just pretty good.
Pretty standard pub food... burgers, etc. I had the fish and chips, but the fish were really heavily battered. Not as good as the Irish pub near my apartment so I was a bit disappointed but overall it was decent. Beers were tasty as the selection is not bad.
On the other hand, we ordered beers at 8:02 and just missed the 8pm cutoff for the $4 beer specials. We had to convince our server that we had been sitting around waiting for her to take our order, so she reluctantly gave us the deal anyway. That made me happy, and if she hadn't done that for us then I wouldn't consider coming back.
Basically nothing really makes me too excited about Half King. I'm thinking the outdoor space would be really great in the warmer months though, and would be a draw. If I am in the neighborhood again, I'd eat dinner here because it wasn't pricey and our server was nice enough, although she wasn't too attentive.

Hubs and I shambled over here around 10:30 one night, ravenous, and had a lovely and gigantic meal. Good beers on tap, and a big fat Yes to both the chipotle mayo and the potato skins w/broccoli. Adding broccoli makes it healthy right? Good sized crowd at the bar, not too loud to talk but still lively. We rolled home fat and very happy.
Love the half King. It's close to my job so once in a while i sneak down here for lunch -in the summer you an grab a seat in the outdoor garden and waste away an hour or two before you realize you shouldn't have had a drink with your lunch on a weekday ;--)
If you find yourself in Chelsea check out this place for their lively happy hours and daily specials. While there, have the turkey burger, the spaghetti with bison meatballs or the crispy chicken wrap with mango and avocado. If lingering over drinks with friends, definitely snack on sweet potato fries.
Pricing is reasonable, atmosphere casual, great spot for a casual dinner.
The Half Kind is a wonderful little pub that is owned, at least partially by Sebastian Junger, author of the Perfect Storm. It's nautical theme sparseness mirrors the feel of a New England pub that fisherman would frequent. The interior is no frills, but seemingly well worn - they got that part right!
As noted in other reviews, the Sweet Potato Fries are perfection. The hamburger is solid too. I have been a couple of times and it's always consistently laid back and friendly service. The Fish and Chips are really great - Fish light and flaky without too much grease.
This bar/restaurant's proximity to the Chelsea gallery district is great. Makes it a nice stopping off place for refreshments after seeing some art.
I should say that it *would* be a nice stopping off place if it weren't so expensive. $7.00 for a pint of beer from their OK (but not spectacular) selection on draft. $16.00 for a bland order of fish and chips. Hamburgers in the $12-14 range.
Jeez, help me out here, folks. An artwork by an emerging artist costs at least $1000.00. Do I also have to pay $7.00 for beer?! Are you trying to drive me into bankruptcy?
The bar has a nice time-worn, broken-in feel to it and the people are friendly. Happy hour prices on weekday evenings are a more reasonable $4/draft. Pleasant patio space out back for warm weather days.

Standard (or below-standard) pub fare at Chelsea prices, apparently this is a popular eatery and readery for the locals. From the reviews below, they are amazed at the quality of the nachos and draft beers. Comfortable and chill, no drama from the adequately attentive and well-intentioned wait staff. Burgers, on the thin side, ranging from $14, sweet potato fries thin and greasy-like. My buffalo burger didn't really provide much in the way of an impact on my tastebuds. My mixed drink (Seven & Seven) came in an amazingly large glass, but had amazingly little liquor in it. I would return if they could provide a bit more value to the customers by adding a few ounces to the burgers and sides - and another half-shot of Seagrams in the tall fountain glass!)
To paraphrase a literary quote of my own, "A full stomach makes me very happy and contented." Perhaps the regulars make out better, but I needed food in my belly and was forced to sneak fries off of the plates of the young lady next to us who was sitting alone reading Camus.
Great sweet potato fries and shepard's pie. The service was great and our server didn't get all in a huff when we said we wanted to split one plate since we were not all that hungry. All in all a great experience and good food.
Pretty decent food and huge portions served at this Chelsea bar/restaurant. The prices are reasonable but the service is a little spotty. My group went on a Saturday night and we could barely hear each other because the place is very noisy.

Came here with some amigos/fellow yelpers after the passport to Chelsea event and was pleasantly surprised by the relaxed atmosphere and solid pub fare...great weekday spot to hang for a few beers and a burger...we all had the lamb burger which was served with a pleasant tzaziki sauce (ps--ask for extra sauce) and fries with a chipotle mayo--nice touch on the mayo (always a better call than ketchup). The outdoor area is perfect when the weather's nice...as per Natasha L's comments, I can't subscribe; our server brought our food and drinks in a timely fashion...girl, leave the tude at the door!
Way chill.
A classic bar with good bar food and plenty of beer to choose from you can't wrong. They have outside dining on the street and in the back with a comfy bar and booths in the middle. Music is a nice mix of some rock and I heard either ghostface or the song he sampled (good old R&B).
If your in the neighborhood and are craving a burger with a beer outside this is your place.

Their standard burger with chedder cheese was one of the best I've had in the city. While it gets crowded during peak hours, there's a nice, laid-back atmosphere both indoors and out. Solid selection of beer and wine; seems like a good spot to grab a drink at any hour. The burgers were somewhat pricey ($12-16 plus $2 per topping), but nothing on the menu is over $16, and everything was worth it.
If you're ever stuck in a long line to pick up your car at the pound (as my brother and I were last night), walk a few blocks south and grab a burger here instead.

Scanning the other reviews before I write my own here, I'm sorry, but did people not notice the ridiculous prices here with the exception of a few?
There are many, many bars, in a more central location, with better prices, a warmer crowd, and outdoor space. Now, I'm not going to go off on Half King; the consensus being the food can be good, can be bad, and the service can be friendly but not particularly quick (unless you're me and they anticipate that I'm going to finish my beer kinda fast). The bartender this afternoon did not really seem to be in a good mood, nor was he particularly happy that there was that much business going on with no extra help. He seemed...peeved. I just couldn't help myself to the fact that no pint was below 6 but these weren't particularly rare or spectacular beers, nor was this comparable to The Spotted Pig. You could find all of these beers at Buttermilk for 4 bucks.
Now with prices hiked up, it does change the clientele, just like most other places. It's logic. The crowd here was few and far between, for some reason I got a lot of weary eyes from the front sidewalk crowd as we went in. I'll admit Chelsea isn't really my favorite area and doesn't include my favorite crowds. Those sunglasses hiding a multitude of issues honey?
The decor was kind of nice too; I always like the earthy feel and the backroom while so cramped wasn't a bad idea. The back patio area has the glass surrounding to block noise probably and also to allow patrons even if it's raining, which is a cool effect but it's also a bit cramped again.
