Los Angeles, CA
I almost hate to write this review because I love this gym and consider it a hidden gem. However, I want to support this place because it's the best neighborhood gym I've ever been to.
I've done the big corporate LA gyms and ugh, not my thing. Nobody comes to the gym @ hayden to be seen or to see who is around. I haven't encountered a single 'meathead' or someone who is more involved in texting than actually using a treadmill. It's just a bunch of people who are there to work out and most of us have a good time doing it.
John, the owner, is super friendly and always willing to lend a hand if you have any questions. He noticed that my wife didn't come with me a couple visits in a row and upon learning she'd pulled her back he volunteered to show her some stretches and exercises she could do to help. No upsell, no "sign up for a personal training session and I can help you," just offered his good advice to a couple of regulars. It's the small things that go a long way!
The gym is clean and well lit and all the machines work fine. If you like machines or free weights, they're both here, just take your pick. They've got a couple TVs for the treadmills and bikes and they play a variety of music, often whatever is pumping up the class that is happening in the back space. The classes are all free, included in your membership, and while I often don't have time to partake they look like a lot of fun. Parking is mainly street, but they will give you a pass to park free in a local lot if you ask. I've never had a problem finding a space.
If you live in the Culver City area or adjacent, check this place out. Just remember that it's a gym, not a scene. Thanks. -

Clean Gym with a good group of Trainers and Classes. They could use a few more 45lb plates.

Culver's best kept neighborhood gym secret. Camila's Brazilian Bootcamp class is absolutely amazing. I'm in the best shape I've ever been thanks to her fantastic workouts! The vibe at this gym is great. No pressure. People of all ages. Friendly staff. The only thing I wish they had was more elliptical machines, but it's no big deal. Forces me to hop on the treadmill instead. Definitely recommend.

This gym is a good find! If you live in Culver City and Bally is your own option you'll be excited you found this place. It's really small, but never crowded and their equipment is in great shape. Free towel service and lockers. They have about 10 cardio machines, so that gives you an idea how small it is. But I've never seen more than 3 people on machines at once. There are tvs up on the wall and they play Weezer on the speakers and have lots of magazines. And it's clean!

Decent pricing, small/local gym. Has all of the equipment that you need, along with fun classes for male and female participants.
No wait on any of the equipment. Friendly members, always willing to 'work in' if they are on a piece of equipment. -

Great gym. Nice people.
It's definitely a small neighborhood gem with a cool warehouse vibe. Slow times are obvious. They also offer a ton of free classes. Haven't tried them yet, but I hear they're fantastic.
John, the owner is a really nice guy and the people who work there are equally cool and down to earth. No snooty attitudes here. Leave that at the door. -

I wish i could give this gym 4.5 stars b/c of the few things i think its missing, but overall its close to 5 stars. I like it because
a) its super close to my work
b) the gym is rarely full and I can have all the free weights and machines to myself practically
c) the classes are AWESOME! ive had a personal trainer before, and these are the equivalent of having your own or better- they make you sweat. tons of fun
d) they provide towels
e) no sleazeball meatheads ogling at you while youre trying to do some quad presses
f) clean.
the downsides (but theyre not deal breakers)
a) gotta find street parking
b) theres only 3 treadmills ( if you happen to show up when all of them are being used it sucks)
c) no lockers. the bathroom have open cubbies or you can toss your gym bag at the entrance
i was previously at ballys in culver city which is the worst of the worst, so id definitely pay 10 bux more a month for all of the pluses i get at this gym, and id rather give my $ to a neighborhood small gym than a corporate monster.Comment from John W. of The Gym At Hayden 7/6/2011
We now have lots of parking 100 feet away! Call the desk or… More » -

Great gym. Very clean. I am there everyday for a two month Fitness program but it is so close to work I am thinking about joining. Super Super clean.
Tons of equipment, holy dumbells, you will not be standing around. -

If you like a friendly "small town" gym (the un 24 hour fitness or the un equinox, or the un Bally's)...this IS the place to go. Very clean, friendly, private. The place is small with a select small set of equipment---but in the short time I went there, never had a problem getting the equipment I wanted to use.

Charged me first and last months membership fees without even signing a contract and refused to refund the money that was charged to my Credit Card when I decided to not join the gym.
I tried a number of times to get a refund, but just got the run around.
Please use my money to help pay for equipment that actually works. -

I LOVE this gym. I spent many years at the big corporate gyms and got tired of all the contracts, dirty machines, attitudes, etc...
When I walked into the Gym on Hayden for the first time, I instantly liked it. The staff is very laid back and chill. I printed out a 1 week free pass to check it out and there was no big sales presentation or pressure to join.
I used the pass for the entire week and decided to join before my pass expired. At the time, they were offering a 25% discount.
The only downside to this gym is that they are somewhat limited on the type machines they have but the basics are covered. The open space, lack of crowds, and chill attitude make up for what they are lacking in equipment.
I'm on a month-to-month membership. I've been a member for almost exactly a month and continue to keep going! -

I was looking for a gym near my work in Culver City, and stumbled upon the Gym At Hayden. It's a great local place with a great price! John, the owner, is always in and out, and cares about making the gym a great experience for his clients.
Not too many cardio machines, but it's never been crowded enough for a wait when I've been there. I've tried a few classes, and my favorite is boxing with Simon - awesome workout!
Great clean and new gym facilities, but don't expect any fancy spa type locker room facilities. -

Culver City, CA
My name is Mary and I'm a gym-o-phobe. I love running and I'm in good shape, but crowded gyms, weight machines, trainers who look like they just got back from the Jersey Shore... It all freaks me out. Add that to the fact that the Golds and Bally's in Culver have a whopping 2 and 1 1/2 Yelp stars respectively, and it's no wonder I hadn't joined a gym.
Enter The Gym @ Hayden. I don't know how to explain it other than to say that the place has a damn good vibe about it. John is friendly and knowledgable, and goes out of his way to say hello to everyone. Yesterday I watched him greet literally every person who walked in the door. And you won't get the hard sell here. Packages and prices are straightforward, and while it's only been open a week, I feel confident that I'll get my money's worth. Come check it out, and support a great new local business. -

I have reluctantly canceled my membership to 'The Gym at Hayden' because I am moving out of state for work. Yet, I am happy to spread the word on how this gym really is first class! Here are a few reasons.
Culver City is a small town considering the California mentality. I was born and raise here and have always carried a love for small businesses and the overall feeling of my town. Luckily, after my military service, I got to come home and settle in some roots for a while. As a native, you just stick to certain things and places here. I always go to the same bar, Joxer's, because it is home. When Bally's opened up-I will admit that I was pretty reluctant to join anything corporate. Turns out my suspicions we right. I did not enjoy the meat head demeanor most other guys carried-even though I am able to hold my own- as that gym was simply having everyone compete with each other on every machine and no friendly nature in the joint. Not too mention that at every corner, some staff member there is always eager in the "fakest" way possible trying to "help" you.
Now, when I showed up to Hayden one afternoon, Mark helped me immediately. I did come in there with the intentions of just working out and he made it clear what the gym's mission was; clearly to be comfortable where you work out. That's huge. A couple days later, I met more of the staff (Grahm and Andrea) and they kept the vibe good and friendly. John, the owner, took it upon himself to introduce himself when he first saw me, a new customer, working out and we had a friendly conversation as he reassured me that if I had any concerns to feel free to bring it up to any of the staff or himself first.
As for the trainers there. I did get limited contact with them only based on me conducting my own work out routine, but I will say that they were always friendly with free advice and just easy to talk to and never carried a non approachable ego. John has done his homework on his staff and trainers and has only brought in the best of the best. In a world where customer service is a thing of the past or becoming automated; the 'Gym at Hayden' staff reminds you that you come first and have strong customer loyalty.
If I make it back to my home town, I know they are one of my first stops when I pull in. I truly consider them a standard above many businesses big or small. They are naturally friendly good people. The gym is always clean with clean towels ready, a locker room to change, now better parking, always looking to better everyone's experience. Shame on you if you pass on the 'Gym at Hayden'.

ps- In the months I have been a customer there; I've managed to lose 35 pounds and increase my strength by almost double thanks to the focus and readiness of that gym to help me with my fitness goals. -

This is a great gym. I remember going to gyms in college and after in a small town I lived in in the Napa Valley. They had a great vibe. You would walk in and people knew your name. They welcomed you and you really felt like they were happy to see you. The gym at hayden has that vibe as well.
John the owner has put together a classy and very modern Gym that has a great rustic feel to it as well. You walk in and large wooden beams span the roof and you feel like you might have just walked into one of LA's many sound stages, but the great music and weights and quick welcome by John himself make you feel at home here. I really am amazed at all of the classes and great bonuses that are included in the membership. I love that they have all types of equipment and free weights but also a very great class area with an awesome eclectic mix of classes. I really enjoy the boxing and kickboxing classes and am looking forward to more. John even said he might be getting Brazilian Jujitsu as well. I hope he does!
I would highly recommend this gym to anyone. The classes are great, the packages are awesome and just meeting John is great too. Parking is ample once you learn where to park and it is fun all around.
Check it out!!!! -

Welcoming place with friendly staff and trainers. It is never overcrowded and the environment makes you want to go to the gym everyday. It's like a much more polished version of the Average Joe's gym from Dodgeball. They recently added stationary bikes and heavy boxing bags too, so extra points for that.

I've always looked for a clean, non-meat market, low-key gym and I've found it with Gym at Hayden! The owner and workers are super nice! Because it's new and still waiting to catch on in Culver City, there aren't a ton of cardio machines or classes yet, hence, the 1 star off (though I've been told some have been ordered & commissioned, respectively). BUT the great thing is, the smaller scale size means I've never had to wait for the machines unless I go in the after-work hours (and even then the wait is like 10 min!) or for the weights and the classes are so small that it's basically a personal training session. Have heard really good things about Camila (Brazilian bootcamp) and the kickboxing classes! Can't wait to try!

i'm tempted to give one star so all of LA doesn't overrun this little jewel, but the management is too nice for me to do that. not once have i waited for equipment or weights. the staff and personal trainers are amazing. i recommend Graham - makes you workout hard in fun and new ways, while not acting like a drill sergeant.
The value of the gym is ridiculous! you pretty much get your own personal gym with membership -

I couldn't ask for anything more in a gym! It has a down to earth, unpretentious feel unlike most corporate gyms, which makes it a super comfortable place to go workout. The owner and staff are friendly, the exposed brick interior is charming, the equipment is new, and the classes are great! Well worth the reasonable membership rate!

It's a nice, clean, neighborhood gym with a friendly staff and good rates. It's never crowded, has everything you need to get a good workout, and if you're into classes, they've got plenty of those, too. (With plenty of space.)
There's also room for more equipment (imo), so if they add a ton more members, I think they'll be able to safely add more equipment.
If you're simply looking for weights/cardio/classes, it blows Bally's in Culver City out of the water. -

Great gym! I spent years working out at annoying places like 24hr fitness where u had to wait in line for treadmills and at snooty clubs like Spectrum in Manhattan Beach and this one puts both of them to shame! Super friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, killer classes and no hidden fees or other high pressure selling techniques! Love it!

I come in about twice a week to work out here. It's a really nice, clean, and friendly gym. Even though it's small, I've never had a problem with getting a machine or using the equipment, not even during peak hours. I really prefer this over the crowded chain gyms.

I've read many of the reviews and most give the gym high accolades. But a friend of mine has told me that the instructor for the early morning group classes rarely shows up...

What a pleasure, great atmosphere, nice machines, never crowded. You get to know the staff by their first names, and they are always nice. I can ride my bike to the gym, park it outside the door. As a neighborhood gym, it has all the stuff the big gyms have, minus the crowds. John the owner is usually there if you have any questions.
I was a member of Bally's, what a big mistake and I won't go into what was wrong with that, only saying if you are considering Bally's as your gym, run away as fast as you can. -

This place just opened and is really cool and personal. Not a big corporate meat market and the prices are way better than anything I've seen in the smaller boutique gyms. Good class schedule and a nice owner and staff who aren't pushy. It's in Debbie Allen's old dance studio and the atmosphere is awesome! I like that there are no initiation fees and hidden agendas!

Saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to check out the gym. I got a free week pass and tried out the boxing classes with Simon. Everyone there is friendly and the classes are incredible. Great deal for what you pay and the classes are very small, almost like having a personal trainer. Signed up for membership. Just need to cancel my LA Fitness membership now.

So NOT LA. (And that's a good thing.) TG@H feels like a private gym-but WITHOUT the poseur attitudes and pretentious pricing found all over town. The owner John really knows what he's doing and truly wants you to get the most out of your workouts to meet your goals. The equipment is ample and up-to-date, the classes are kick-ass, and the space is as cool as the vibe. The closest TG@H will probably ever get to feeling like LA will be when the memberships max out... and you can't get in.
