Love the fashion. Very avant-garde and great Japanese pieces that are not available anywhere else. Tara is the best--so friendly and helpful but never pushy. It's just the prices that shock. However, they do have good sales. Thank goodness or I'd be broke.
Accepts Credit Cards? ha, they'd better, you'd better bring your really high end credit cards too. I don't want to imply this is over priced, because maybe there really are skirts worth thousands of dollars. I went in there once, and thought, oh things are "cute"... not expecting to see price tags that would make me go "omg" and walk out. Nothing against people who can pay those kinds of prices but ARE YOU NUTS??? oh, you probably have your mother's credit cards or something, because there are not too many working women who'd spend their OWN money on this stuff.
they sell comme des garcons! incredible.
i knew before my visit here, that i was going to encounter some high prices. and frankly, i was ok with that. i enjoy splurging on some fabulous designer denim, shirts and jackets.
i purchased a killer james purse turtleneck and some skinny j brand jeans (that were on sale! yes!)
the staff was knowledgeable, and friendly. however, a little too chatty. i want to shop in peace and if i need help, i'll just ask.
all in all, i love this place. it's sophisticated, clean and chic.
plus, you gotta dig the name of the store.

I bought two great pairs of shoes in here on Saturday - both admittedly on sale. One of them was really too small when I got home and tried the 2 pairs on again (I think my feet were a bit swelled up that morning?) and I called and basically begged them to take back the one too-tight pair in exchange for only a store credit (I did NOT ask for a refund, of course). The answer was a resounding no. Sorry, I have cash to spend and want to build an entire new wardrobe for Fall/Winter but ... shop here? No way. They lost A LOT of business over a lousy $240 shoe sale of a pair of shoes that they probably paid $120 for and I would have been thrilled with the store credit. Bummer because I had planned to go back to put together some great new outfits. For the record, I do shop boutiques so I know they have to have strict policies but this was a bad first-time experience and just seemed extreme in my opinion given I called within 2 days and the shoes were unworn and store credit would have been fabulous. The people are nicer at Heidi Says and Divine Girls and Green Apples where they have made minor exceptions in the past in order to keep me as a loyal shopper (which I am) - Shop there instead! I can't imagine wanting to spending any money here again, the irony being that I like spending money.
My friend has been telling me well... maybe for like a year, to check this store out. I am glad that I finally made it. I enjoyed the simplicity of the colors in the store, very neutral and classic. I was pleased to see they carried Clu, which is like the most comfy cotton pieces ever! The shoe selection was to die for and they even had a generous selection of sale items. The staff was totally dressed in savvy style and they were friendly without being pushy. I think that my mom and I are going back for a second time later this week cause we got shoes on the brain!

OK I love this store as much as I love Susan, and the clothes here frankly fit my more casual lifestyle. Susan does great buying for this store too, and like the other store, I only occasionally buy things full price, but sometimes, well, I just have to do it! I have never felt hounded by the staff here as some other reviewers have said, but on the other hand, I have been visiting this and the other store for years, so if they're new and don't know me, I actually tell them to just leave me alone because I have my own way of worship. There is a very kind manager at this store also, and the sales help is less discrete and refined as Susan down the block, but this is the fun store, so the sales help is a little more out front and chatty. I got a great Hani Y sweater there along with several pairs of socks and shoes and pants and all sorts of things. Worth a look if you are not afraid of investment buying, just like sister store Susan. We're lucky to have these stores in our town.
Too many labels to list and mostly obscure to the greater population. High edge. High fashion. Very approachable and casual but knowledgable customer service.
Just go.
5 stars.

Great selection, but some of the most over priced clothing in the business. Who can afford to shop here? The selection should showcase more local talent.
Great clothes, overpriced, but a good selection. My low rating is due to the rudeness of the sales staff -- one practically accused me of stealing when I carried a dress 10 ft. to show my friend.
Where else do you walk away with red patent Hogan flats, Rogan shorts anyone would kill for and the biggest smile on your face EVER.. The Grocery Store, that's where.
Their selection of truly cool, unique and out of this world merchandise never ceases to amaze me. Tara and the girls there have a special place in my heart...it's true.
Susan (the owner and buyer) has the best fashion eye in this city. Check out her other store on Sacramento entitled what else but SUSAN (another also in Burlingame)where you will find all things McQueen, Balenciaga, Prada plus other fashion greats..all at their best!

Maybe it's aptly called The Grocery Store because one can't live without them.
The staff is incredibly fashion savvy and perceptive. They just "get-it". Personal attention here is like a beacon of light for others to emulate.
It's been said the clothes are more edgier than most you'll find in San Francisco. I wholeheartedly agree ... and thank God!
The Grocery Store is a dream come true, although I may need to adjust my actual grocery budget to shop here.

Great store. Nice collection of casual super-soft shirts (I think they have the largest collection of James Perse outside L.A.) and some funky stuff from Japan that's hard to wear outside Tokyo (I think I saw some shirts with three sleeves last time I was there). Oh, and I love that they carry Miu Miu! Definitely a lot of stuff you don't see at your typical SF boutique. Return policy is strict though- I think it's 15 days (and I think they only allow exchanges). I agree with the other reviewers- LOTS of sales pressure so be prepared (gosh, I gave them my number one time and now someone calls me EVERYTIME they get in new stuff). They'll even stand outside your dressing room and keep bringing you stuff they think you'll like (like a $300 t-shirt when you're trying on a 70$ shirt!). Other than that, definitely worth checking out.

This store is dangerous for anyone who likes to shop.
The staff (for the most part) is wonderful and work hard to find you what you are looking for. If you like boots check out their selection of Frye boots (to dies for!) I constantly get compliments on my yellow Frye construction boots from here. Twice a year they have good sales where you can find discounted shoes, bags and basic t-shirts. Ask for Tara she rocks!
Ok people. Tired of downtown and buying what everyone else already has? Bored with the drab selections that continually pop up at our major retail chains? This store, while not inexpensive, will help you add to your own sense of style. While other stores will push what is "in" this store will steer you towards what looks good. Their selection of clothes has no peer in the Bay Area and would give any store anywhere (Europe included) a run for their money. Don't just take my word for it go check it out for yourself. If your lucky you will meet Deenie and she has the power to make everyone look good.
While it is sometimes overwhelming to walk into a boutique with such an astounding selection of clothing, shoes, and accessories, the team at The Grocery Store is excellent, and will help whip you into a fabulous anything. Excellent selection of Three Dot, James Perse, and so much more. Definitely cutting edge, and you'll have no worry of running into someone with the same thing!
Until there's a Miu Miu shop in SF, this is my go-to place--tons of shoes, purses, and clothes by Miu Miu and other designers. Mostly fun, glam style with some super-designed impractical pieces here and there. The best time to go is between seasons when they will have oodles of clothes, shoes, and handbags with good discounts, up to 50% off.
Good service but bad buying. I dont think the buyer knows what demographic to shoot for. It is nice to see obscure designers in SF- I do like the selection of Miu Miu
great bags and shoes...clothing is yeah trendy and all that but INSANELY expensive. i see here that pretty much everyone that has written a review is excited about the staff. this is actually my main peeve with the place and has kept me out of the store for months at a time while i will excitedly walk into other shops on the same street (even nextdoor)
with the exception of tara who is totally mellow, i have never seen such a desperate, aggressive, commission-hungry group of sales people in my LIFE.
if you don't mind being hounded around the store, handed clothing that you have absolutely no interest in and being walked in on in the dressing room (so that the saleperson can show "how it should be worn"...uninvited)...then i guess this is the place for you.
it has a reputation up and down the street for insanely aggressive sales techniques and..THE ugliest dressing rooms in existence.
yes ladies, there is an infinity mirror and overhead lighting in every dressing room. it was once explained to me by a staff person that the dressing rooms are designed that way to be "realistic". wtf? AND there are no locks on the dressing rooms, so the sales people can just blithely walk in on you (as has happened to me a number of times). the store manager also leaves...uhm...a lot to be desired.
i used to go here quite a bit until they hired a young lady that has questionable manners when it comes to sales.
i always proceed with caution and will only go into the store when i see that the manager and this gal are not around.
I like this boutique because it carries such different designers than most other places, however, it is very expensive. they also carry a good selection of t-shirts by three dots and james peirce. I always love their shoe selection...mostly miu miu but there are some other great designers in there as well. after christmas the grocery store has a great sale that you can really get some deals on.
The first people in California to carry THAKOON....need I say more?

Fabulous! I got a $700 Strenesse Blue jacket here for $200 one year. Wonderful selection of designers and lots of Clu!
There's so much going on at this store it just feels like you can't even possibly get through the racks in a days time. like the different lines. and the name. :) staff sits on top of you as you find stuff. kind of bugs. but nice 3.1 selection. yay!
