Review from JR C.
The Lowdown==- Saturday night no cover, dim lit castle-like interior, "caged" outside patio, laid back crowd knocking back beers.
You cannot run out of places to sit here. There could be 6-8 large parties and this dive would be able to handle it. The crowd attracted here are the friendly kind to spark random conversations with, so douchebaggery is checked at the door. There are a couple nice fireplaces set up inside next to large couches, and large picnic bench set-ups scattered about so gathering your friends around would not be a problem in this ultra space-efficient spot.
There is a central and side bar where the crowd gets at most 1 deep. There's never really problems trying to get your drink order to the bartender, since the noise ambiance at this place was not annoyingly loud.
Quick Note: there's nothing upstairs except the kitchen, don't even try to go up. I wanted to sneak up at one point because I thought it was the ultra-exclusive VIP lounge. NOPE, *clank* *clank* *clank* only pots and pans! Downstairs is fun enough.
Restrooms aren't super, but when are they ever are at a divey bar. At least the stalls had doors and it wasn't a single occupancy. -

Decent prices but parking is a nightmare on weekends. Plenty of seating both inside and out on their covered patio. Staff come around to pick up empty glasses on a regular basis, so you can keep on getting rounds.
Come with your friends, find street parking and save some cash and the hassle of valet. Also conveniently located next to some eateries, so you can get some hangover-helping post-drinks grub.
Not our bar of choice, music is waaay too loud, but we'll go if the rest of the guys are there. -

Piss poor customer service, but fantabulous food.
This place may excel with its fantastic food and tasty drinks, but its reputation (in my opinion) is seriously hurt by the ridiculously poor service these me-against-the-world servers and employees with piss poor attitudes.
A ZERO out of 5 for service.
We came in on a Saturday afternoon (~6:30) during Happy Hour and sat in the corner. For 15 minutes almost, we sat there, unless someone told us in such a tone "Umm, it isn't 9 yet, so you're going to have to go up to the bar and order yourself". Gee, no shit, thank you for the condescension. Already I was beginning to feel apprehensive about the place.
So I went up to the bar and ordered two drinks and some food. They gave me the little placard to put at our table. And nothing else. So I went to sit down.
About 5 minutes later this guy in skinny jeans, a beanie, and a scruffy ass bead comes with more condescension... "Did you order drinks? You're going to have to go and pay for them now" as he rolls his eyes. Yeah, no SHIT hipster. I didn't steal the drinks, they weren't even made for me yet.
This same guy gave us stinking attitude at least two more times during our evening... I won't go into details, because thinking about it makes me see a white hot light.
So anyway... he and the other 5 employees that were there went to sit down at the bar again and talk and have drinks and food, instead of helping out the only customers there. Oh, right... did I forget to mention that we were the ONLY patrons at the Griffin until about 7:30 and we were still getting treated like shit?
OK at this point I was fuming and was getting ready to punch hipsterboy in the kidney and make him piss blood, but then our food came out.
AMAZING FOOD. Seriously. a 6 out of 5.
BLT with tater tots, an order of fries to share, and a mini burger.
MIND BLOWN. The BLT was a little buttery but flavorful. They made a BLT taste more amazing than I've had at any other place. The fries were crisp with a hint of pepper with homemade ketchup.... and the miniburger was coated with a tent of cheese.
Afterwards, we had the ice cream sundae with homemade french vanilla ice cream... I've never had $12 ice cream, but somehow I knew this was worth the money.
Needless to say overall I was amazed by the food... and still a bit ker-fluffed (is that a word) about the piss-in-my-drink service.
So this place gets a (6+0)/2. Would be better, but won't be until the employees take a step back and take the sticks out of their asses. It took them 15 minutes to close our tab.
My final words about this place? Expect shitty service, especially if you're not dressed like a hipster. I think if my pants were tight with my twig and berries stuck like a division symbol, I would have been able to communicate with these people.
More specifically... if you see an employee in skinny jeans, a deep v shirt, a beanie, with a scruffy ass beard, walk away. He thinks you are trying to oppress him and will treat you as such. Find another employee... they will be SLIGHTLY nicer. -

One of the worst bars I've never been to, friendly wise,
Bartenders took a accidental spilled beet as a sign of an extremely drunk customer and limited him if beer even when there was none there at the bar, also a shady person was ready to steal my change at the bar table cloth, bartender was ok with this. definitely won't be coming back here again. -

Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me!
What was I thinking, coming back to this place on a Friday night?! Really dumb hipster kids go to this place during the , like the schmuck hipster in corduroy sports coat that was outside hanging outside and annoying the bouncer and then asked our ages. I just wanted to say was "Go f*ck yourself" but my husband replied with a civil "None of your business". Great, my night is just downhill from here.
As soon as we entered, I just wanted to leave. The bartenders here are way too slow, or perhaps they take too long making those poo-poo mixed drinks. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WAIT 15 MINUTES TO ORDER A BEER AT THE BAR! OR LONGER TO CLOSE MY TAB - I felt like I was being held hostage by the bartender who had my credit card. Perhaps I should of just left and reported it stolen.
IT WAS THE LAST TIME GRIFFIN! I just wanted to get my buzz on. Suggestion to the bar owner: get better (or more) bartenders.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Mixed crowd, fun people watching, good selection of beers on tap and special Happy Hour drinks as well. I have yet to try the food but I like the vibe of this place, very chill, a good place to get together with friends for drinks and conversation. My list visit they had Strawberry Fruli on tap, YUM! It's a white beer with strawberry puree, not too sweet, I could drink it all night!

Cheap drinks. What else could you want from a bar?
I came here for a friend's birthday shindig on a Friday and I loved it! I think they had two furnaces burning and combined with the low lighting, it created a relaxing ambiance. The music wasn't loud, so you could have a conversation with the person next to you. They have a jukebox, which fitted the ambiance, but the selection was limited. There are couches and tables to comfortably sit on. Oh, and there's no dance floor for the dance fanatics.
There's parking on the street, but watch out for parking street signs. The bar offers valet parking, which we paid $6.
The bartenders were quick to take orders and are friendly as well.
I'd love to come here often and maybe even celebrate something here, but it's too far for me. I hate dealing with LA traffic, especially the 5. -

After frequenting the Bigfoot Lodge one too many nights these past few months, I decided to give The Griffin a run for it's money. Let me tell you, they did not disappoint!
They have an excellent selection of beers and hard liquor, including A MENU (FOR FOOD!) If you're a connoisseur of good eats, and great tasting alcohol, then I definitely recommend this place.
They make all their food in house, including the Frickles (fried pickles) and Sweet Potato Ice Cream, that I had the pleasure to dine on. THEY WERE FANTASTIC! I can't wait to go back to try out the other delicious options on their menu, like the Gravy Fries or the entrees.
It's very cozy inside, but the music is too loud. The place is partially lit with candles, and a roaring fireplace (unlike the Bigfoot Lodge which has a fake fire. I know this because I actually stuck my hand in to check... haha). I wonder what they do about the radiating head during the summer? It's March, and the heat from the candles and fireplace were driving me up the wall. Note to self: Never sit beer close to the candle on the table. -_-
All in all, if I will probably return to this place. I enjoyed it much more than the BigFoot Lodge down the road; plus, they're much cheaper. -

I love this place, minus their obnoxiously loud music. I celebrated my birthday here two years in a row because its so easy to get an area for your friends to sit together. I just wish they could turn the music down just a TINY BIT!

I came here for an ugly holiday sweater pub crawl meetup and this was my favorite place out of all the ones that we had visited. It's got a nice vibe and being that it was a cold winter night, there was alot of people at the griffin that night. I love their decor, it's got a sophisticated yet homey feel, with fireplaces included. I would say that it's no cheap bar and instead more on the upscale side, so drinks are not that cheap.
I would come again just for the experience and because it's a nice, happening place to hang out but maybe I would start off having drinks elsewhere, especially since I'm on a budget. Parking is street parking, and it wasn't so easy to find a spot. I had to park around the block in the residential area. -

I couldn't even sleep last night after this place put me in such a funk. FIrst, the service gives a lot to be desired. I doubt the bartenders could even see me past their own egos... but whatever. This is LA and that's just the sad truth of how many people are. Second, the prices are horrifying. $14 for a sandwich, an extra $3 for fries. Want to order a side of fries without a sandwich? That'll set you back a cool $8. $8 for FRIES. And they're not even that great. These sandwiches aren't even organic or exceptionally good. It's greasy standard bar food, huge unfinishable portions, for the price of a nice sushi dinner or a quick bite at Bottega Louie.
The previous commenter mentioned a "laid back crowd" on saturday night with plenty of seating. Update that with "sloppy drunk mean girls who try to grab your friends chair while she's at the bathroom even though you have your jacket and purse on it and are sitting right next to it." I seriously had to tell 3 different girls, "excuse me, that seat is taken and you're sitting on my purse," before getting shot dirty looks or having eyes rolled at me.
Wish this place wasn't douchebag central... I've heard such good things about the black boar which is why I figured I'd check the griffin out while I was in the hood. I won't be back. -
Review from Dayae K.
This is the local college pub for all the wizards from Hogwarts... of course I am joking, but it reminds me of a bar that would be in Harry Potter.
It would be a bar for The Gryffidors... Hence the name The Griffin.......
Okay I am being super lame, but anyways, the decor and the inside REALLY REALLY REALLY reminds me of Harry Potter.
Anyways, went here for my boyfriend's birthday party.
The space was large and accommodated everybody, the drinks were cheap- they had mystery shots for $4!, and there were free parking all around the neighborhood area! Definitely beats bars in downtown LA or Hollywood where drinks are super expensive and parking is always valet or ridiculously hard to find.
Overall a good experience!
PS- it's super dark in here so if you get severe Asian glow, you're in luck because no one will know how red or how drunk you are... unless someone takes a picture of you with flash! -

I like this bar when it isn't crowded (week nights). Nice bar space, patio, restrooms, fireplaces, jukebox.
The bartenders are very very nice and pay attention to you when you're at the bar.
I've only eaten their Prickles (fried pickles) and they were what I expected. Nothing fancy. I hope you try other things on their menu next time I'm there.
Good choice of beer, but pretty pricey compared to my local hangouts downtown. $8 for a Prankster? Sheesh.
This bar makes me feel like a lost Muggle in the Gryffindor common room. If only HP would show his face once in a while. -

You say frickles and I say I'm there!
I spent my first evening here the other day for a friend's birthday party. It's not very close to where I live, but it was worth the drive in my opinion. I love the indoor fireplace and the seating makes it easy to bring a big group of friends, take over a section of the bar, and have a great party. The bar has lots of good beers (CHIMAY!) and very tasty, greasy bar food that we all devoured. The frickles are outstanding, but their regular ol' fries are also very good. Food and drinks are served quickly and the staff are friendly and available, unlike a lot of other hipster-ish bars. Parking was also pretty easy to find on the residential streets around the bar, but there's also valet. I'm definitely a new fan of this place.Listed in: Bars, Bars, Bars

This was a complete surprise. When I first went here with some friends, the Griffin reminded me of Harry Potter and a chill place for Gryffindors to hang out and drink. No joke! As a Harry Potter fan, this was easily recognizable. Just go to the restroom and check out some Griffin memorabilia.
I love the fire places here, which definitely contribute to the ambiance of this dark place. Furthermore, they have a great selection of bottled and craft beers as well as decent bar food. Staff is friendly and helpful when it comes to figuring out which beer is good here.
Overall, the Griffin is terrific to check out if you are ever in the Los Feliz area.

West Los Angeles, CA
Beautiful space. Loved the brick arches ribbing the entire venue, fireplaces on opposite sides, the various seating arrangements--from tables, to booths, to bench seating--definitely promotes good conversation with a yupster or two. Music was not too loud and played mostly semi-popular indie bands. My friend commented that the bartender was a bit too drunk to process her request, but oh well, as long as he has a heavy pour?
We tried the tasty pear cider, some belgian white, and pickle fries--slightly spicy and pickles were definitively less pickled and fresher than other pickle fries i've tried. We also tried their chocolate-chip Intelligencia ice cream --strewn with caramel and topped with inedible sticks of i don't know what, it was okay. I got the bitter contrast of the high cacao content chocolate pieces but it was too much when i bit into whole coffee beans also mixed into the ice cream. A little too gritty and caffeinated for my taste.
Definitely a place I will come back with friends or out of towners, another interesting spot in LA. -

Review from Jackie W.
This is definitely the place for drinks, as they are strong, but not so much the place for food. My friend and I came here around 6pm on a Friday night for one of those after work happy hour things as well as to get some grub. The Jack and Coke I ordered was definitely fat! I could tell when I got it by the color that there was more jack than coke in there. The food we ordered wasn't so awesome. We had the BLT and the combination sliders. The BLT was very ordinary - bacon, lettuce, tomato on an english muffin with a side of tots. The sliders weren't very tasty. The buns were over-toasted and charred, so we tasted a lot of burnt. The pork slider was salty and the hamburger and lamb sliders were sweet.
As for the ambiance, we definitely enjoyed sitting by the fire and having drinks while conversing about bunch of nothing. At the time we went, it was still mellow with a mostly older crowd. I don't know what the crowd is like after hours as we left Griffin's past 8pm. They also have a nice, varied seating arrangement. You can sit at the bar, the booth, tables, by the fire pits, or outside in their patio.
Happy Hour as I saw last night:
$4 draft beers, $4 well drinks, $5 glass wine. Food consisted of corn dogs, mac and cheese, fries/tots, and a BLT. -

Came here for my birthday upon searching on Yelp. The sliders were yummy. They ran out of frickles though! How can you run out of frickles?? We weren't there long after it opened. Maybe they forgot to restock their pickle pile. :( BUT the drinks were abundant. The first mystery shot I had tasted great! The second one was different though. I was disappointed since I had bought about 13 of them for all of my friends. It tasted like medicine. Not the kind that you pretend to be sick just to have. The crowd ... I didn't really get a good look since I was busy drinking, but I remember they were not old. They were probably 20s and 30s. It's rather dark in here, a fireplace or two. It was a nice place!

A very cool and cozy bar. This is a great venue for groups or a fun night out with your beau.
Was recommended by a friend and finally got to try it for my birthday. I loved it! Although, I felt like Harry Potter was going to walk in any minute LOL. They have great specials to fit your budgets. We had a blast the night we went but made the mistake of sitting by the fire place. It's too hot next to it so the second the 2nd bar was opened we moved in there.
The bar is pretty busy, but we got there early enough to get a seat and had steady waitress service. I'd love to go back! It's easy to find but parking is bad. You do have to find street parking in the neighborhood. -

Santa Monica, CA
The Griffin is a seriously solid choice if you're in this area. I haven't been here in a little while but found myself in the hood recently thanks to Passport to Atwater Village and decided to pay this old haunt a visit. It's still the same bustling, cozy interior with fires going, lots of places to sit, and a dark cabin feel. The crowd was mixed and lively on a Friday night, but luckily there wasn't much of a wait at the door.
They have a huge beer selection, and I'd probably stick with that in this spot over cocktails... it just has more of a beer vibe. Also wonderful were the fried pickles (aka frickles) and the french fries, which are like McDonald's fries but better tasting and less greasy. The food selection isn't anything super special or different but definitely appropriate for the munchies that come on after a few drinks.
The bartenders are efficient and knowledgeable, and the door staff's pretty nice too. The parking can be a huge pain in the butt but you should try your luck in the residential streets across Los Feliz. Cheers! -
Review from Katie B.
Oh my gosh...I forgot about the frickles! Their fried pickles are a drunk girl's dream come true...a sober one's too for that matter.
I've been spending a significant amount of time in Atwater Village recently and ending many long days at The Griffin. It's a place I don't find any hassle, bother, or attitude. That's not to say the staff is all smiles and rainbows, but they get their job done and that's all one can ask for when you just need a drink or a bite.
The beer selection is fantastic! Shipyard pumpkin, Lagunitas IPA are the two standouts for me, and in addition to draft they also have bottles galore, in addition to a full bar. I'm most happy sitting at the bar on a slow night or in the back room on a busy night.
I have to be honest and admit I don't love the food - I think it's pretty so, so. I think their French fries are consistently good and crisp with just enough salt, their tater tots are served just right though I am not a fan of the sauce, and their hummus is quite large and in charge (and served with these massive fried pita chips). I've also had their chicken fingers that are juicy and fried to golden perfection, but lacking a stand alone flavor so definitely get the creamy ranch with it. The slider dish is womp, womp. I was really looking forward to the goat cheese slaw on the pork slider but it was absent from the plate, the regular hamburger was safe, and the lamb one was the most flavorful of all three.
Great for a drink and awesome for groups!Listed in: Beer There., LAte Night Bites..., Lamb., Frickles, Atwater Village

This is a pretty chill place, but still classy. It was busy on a Friday night. There were plenty of seats, a mini fireplace, a backroom.... there's nothing bad about this place! Parking is free as it's pretty much in a residential area.

Lamb Burger!!!! What else to have after another great yelp event right? The yelp peeps made an executive decision and we decided on this gem. I arrived and the wife and I decided once we saw the special lamb burger pic(Lamb in between two buns with a tongue or blood dripping down), on some sliders and Lamb burger with two cokes(The beer selection was awesome, but wanted to change it up). The lamb burger was great, cooked just right and melted in my mouth. The sliders were good as well. Not as enjoyable as the lamb burger, but still pretty good.
The service was awesome. The bartender made sure that we were taken care of as well, despite the crowd, and yet it was crowded. Now that's service. The staff was friendly and accommodating.
The parking was street parking, but was good. Just park on Los Feliz or on one of the adjacent streets.

It makes me so very sad to downgrade my rating for The Griffin, but it must be done. The last few times I've gone, the crowd was...weird. I don't know how else to say it. Just weird. And the music has turned into a weird mix of hip-hop, rap and Latin. And it's been so crowded on some nights you can't just walk through the room, other nights so dead you wonder how they are surviving.

One of my favorite bars! The drinks are strong, huge beer selection, and mystery shots for $4. I tried a mystery shot before, the bartender claimed it to be like 80% proof, but I don't know.. seemed less than that! The bartenders are nice to look at (although some can come off as a little douchebaggy), and the crowd isn't bad either. They have the outdoor smoking patio where it's nice to just drink, talk, and smoke with friends. Bathrooms are clean which is always a plus. The food is pretty good too!!! Love their tater tots!

Not bad place at all!
It really has cool pub atmosphere. I loved the outdoor patio, I loved the fries, I loved the draft beers, I'm kinda gonna go back again with the same group of friends to try their corn-dog, which looked yummy from far apart. Located on Los Feliz, right in front of the huge Costco plaza. Parking might be a challenge, but you'll be fine parking nearby.
I liked the fact that it was crowded but the place wasn't suffocating, there was room for personal space. There is a fake fireplace with red velvet couches, carpets, curtains all over the place, looks good thanks to the low lighting, otherwise you might start feeling like a spanish raging bull ;)
Make sure when you go take cash with you, because they have minimum charges for CCs. The service might be a little bit slow, but you can be a bit patient b/c it gets crowded at the bar.

I stumbled into the Griffin one drunken, Thursday evening and felt like I entered Hogwarts--the Gryffindor commonroom, specifically. Being a Harry Potter fanatic, I was delighted. The interior felt like a spacious den, as if it really were a room built deep within castle grounds, complete with cozy red carpeting, two central fireplaces, and small oil paintings that decorated the walls.
The drinks are a bit strong, and since I didn't pay both times I've been here (I know, I'm lucky gal), I can't comment on the prices and I haven't been to the bar, but I will say the service is nice because my group shattered some glasses and the busboy was reeeally nice about it.
The food here is alright. It looked fancy but tasted ok. I ordered a portobello burger and it was way too tangy. They really skimped out on the chips when we ordered chips with bean dip so we had to order another round of chips. The dips were fantastic though. And their potato poppers (or whatever they're called) were really salty.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to ALL Harry Potter fans, as this is what beckoned me back a second time (for my magically themed birthday, duh). It's a fun place to visit as I love the decor, but I've had better experiences at other bars. So, as I had to bid farewell to my childhood with the end of the greatest book series of all time, I give this place a quiet and solemn nod of approval as I venture off to experience the hundreds of other bars LA has to offer. -

One of my favorite places to go with a crowd. The Griffin is pretty big and the decor is very homey. They have a great beer selection and I encourage anyone that goes to try the hemp ale. If you want to go bar hopping you can always head to the Bigfoot Lodge which is a two minute walk away. However, The Griffin is cheaper and actually has food! My sister and I had the Frickles(fried pickles) and the sweet potato ice cream. The sweet potato ice cream was honestly the most interesting ice cream I have ever tried. It was so delicious and well worth the $8. Also if your on a budget try the Olympia beer for $3. It's way better than PBR.
