after a crappy motel night sleep and a day of hiking/bouldering in front of me, i wanted some pancakes from The Griddle.

being true to myself, i ordered a short stack of pancakes and they were huge and heavy and tasteless, i was so disappointed, no amount of butter or syrup could resurrect them.

i ordered coffee and had to specifically ask for milk/cream and the sugar jar appeared on the table after i finished my second cup.

the waitress seemed overwhelmed with her 4 tables on a mid-friday morning.  eating by myself, helped me eaves-drop on ridiculous conversations, don't judge me :)

the fruit cup and outdoor seating saved this Winnemucca place.

There's an outdoor seating area that looked like it came straight from my elementary school in 1989 - molded plastic chairs in orange and "golden wheat," pulled up to no-nonsense square tables. OK, I'm definitely eating here, if only so I can pretend I'm back in Mrs. Oppel's first grade classroom.

The Griddle turned out to be a decent diner in Winnemucca, with burgers and steak for dinner.  There were a surprising number of salads on the menu, too.

I've only been to Winnemucca once and happened to stop here for brunch. I couldn't tell you how this place compares to other local restaurants but in my book, this place is probably as good as it gets in Winnemucca.

OJ- I love OJ and I like them fresh. This place gave me fresh OJ and I was happy

I ordered from their specials and my potatoes, eggs and toast were delicious. It wasn't anything different but it was simple, home-cooked food at it's best.

If for some reason I happened to be in the area again, I'll definitely stop here for some brunch.

I had one lunch here on May 30:  meatloaf with mashed potatoes.  The meatloaf was disappointing but I wasn't expecting much. Good meatloaf? Where you gonna find it?  It was dry and cardboardy.

Knowing good meatloaf is hard to find, it's my fault for even ordering it. It was worth a try. You never know. It's conceivable that a quaint place like The Griddle in Winnemuca, Nevada might have discovered the secret of meatloaf. Sounds good, doesn't it?

The mashed potatoes were suspiciously like the powdered kind. The gravy was suspiciously like gravy mix.  I was so hungry after hours on the road I wolfed it down. To help out, I drizzled Tabasco sauce on the whole mess. My fellow critic was happy with her burger, so in fairness I didn't downgrade the rating.

Maribel, our waitress, is a cheerful young woman who offered to refill my water.  I give the Griddle an extra star on the strength of that alone.  I increased her tip by a dollar too. For some reason, waitresses at the places I stopped in southern Oregon will not offer to refill your water. I was grateful to finally get good service after enduring two weeks of atrocious service in S. Oregon.

The town was jumpin' because the mule races were about to convene. There were mule racing people in the restaurant chatting excitedly about upcoming events.   A guy at a nearby table told me the world's best mules would compete.  The races are all dashes, 300-400 yards, highlighted by the $2,800 Mule Classic and the $7,200 Mule Futurity.

We were tempted to stay for the races but the sun was beating down and the traffic was a horror, so we left town ASAP. A friendly gent at the gas station gave me his map of Nevada after explaining the merits of various routes to Vegas. That danged map blew out the window when we were just about to Tonopah.

Perhaps you have guessed by now that i am a sucker for a greasy spoon.  Its no lie.  But theres more to it than the simple, heavy fare that is served.  Its about the service and what i can only call "authenticity".  Something nostalgic, I guess.  But it reminds me of traveling with my family on those long road trip vacations where we'd stop and my dad would call the waitress by her name simply because her name was on her nametag... witty bastard!

The Griddle is another such place.  Not unlike Ole's, they serve yummy, hearty breakfasts.  They have an undeniable small town charm.  And they take GREAT pride in their business.

My only complaint (and certainly not one worth deducting a star) would be that they cut back their hours to 2pm - so they are not open for dinner as they once were.  Thats too bad, as my sweetie and I fell in love at a table outside in the late summer heat.  We've tried several times to recreate this memory only to find that theyve cut back their hours.  But if youre popping through Winnemucca some morning, stop here.  You wont be sorry.

:)
Love,
Sara

The seats are too close together.  The waitress over heard me make the remark.  She said something I didn't understand.  It was a comment about my head.  I'm not sure if she was trying to be funny or rude.  However, her comment was lost on me.

Excellent breakfasts and fresh squeezed OJ at this place.  The service is attentive and the waitstaff are friendly.  You get to see a slice of Winnemucca when dining here - hunters, gamblers, and locals convene for a delicious, simple breakfast.

Headed to Montana from SF we ate breakfast in Winnemucca.  Knotty pine ceiling, nice folks and food better than most roadside stops. The Caribbean french toast (coconut!) and the omelets were great, okay coffee. I SHOULD have had pie darn it -we watched the letters go up on the high sign: "Order Holiday Pie Toay". Maybe if more Yelpers go there they can buy that longed for "d".

The Griddle is the best place in town for a home cooked breakfast. Everything is good, especially the fresh squeezed orange juice.

I'm a big fan of diners and this is one of the better ones I've been to in terms of food, authentic diner atmosphere and great service.  There's not many choices in this little town, but the Griddle is not to be missed.  Hands down, they have the best Quiche Lorraine I've had in a long time. Instead of a slice, it comes to you as a small round tart (about 4"), looking more like a tiny deep dish pizza, than a traditional bottom-crusted pie.  My husband had the crab-cake Benedict that was delicious.  Highly recommend either dish.  Service was authentically friendly... coming from the Bay Area in California, we're accustomed to rude, over-educated frustrated servers so it was a nice change.  This visit was a one-time shot, so most likely will not come this way again, but I highly recommend this place!
