definitely making another visit to grey dog the next time i'm in NYC.
grey dog crushes majority of the the cafes here in san francisco! i was so suprised @ how friendly and accommodating the staff was when the cafe was entirely full. They took our orders quickly but with precision, and some how got us seated when all the tables were full. They have a large menu @ great prices... i nibbled on the dishes that a couple of my friends ordered expecting to find some kind of flaw in seasoning, but it tastes perfect...
also... realllly tasty coffee, no sugar or milk please.
It's really chill and casual here, almost has a slight western feel to it. Overall a cool place, but I'm not in any hurry to come back for the food. They serve breakfast and lunch food, but I wouldn't say 'brunch' food. For Grey Dog's brunch only refers to the time of day you eat here. They don't have eggs benedict and those other special weekend-only brunch dishes that restaurants serve. I got the blueberry pancakes which were so yellow and smooth it looked artificial - like from pancake mix so I would not recommend the pancakes. They were edible, but probably one of the most disappointing pancakes I've ever had.
We also ordered the cuban press and our friends ordered a breakfast quesadilla (it was pretty big) and turkey/apple/brie sandwich. Food was slightly above average but nothing that blew us away. I liked how the sandwich bread are thick slices. The sandwiches come with ridged potato chips.
We came on Saturday around 11am and was seated right after we ordered. The ordering system makes paying easier since you stand in line and pay there. You get your own water (the cups are so tiny you'll need to bring a few to your table) as well as your own utensils and napkins. The only problem is you can't linger and stay much after you finish eating because people in line are waiting for tables....and Grey Dog's Coffee is not shy about telling you to move it along!
Came here for a Sunday Brunch. It's kinda like a food court style service. You stand in line to put your order in and a guy comes through the line to ask how many people you have. By the time you put your order in, a table should be freed up and the host seats you. They bring your food out at the table when it's ready, but you have to get your silverware and napkin at the counter.
This is possibly one of the best brunch I've had! The menu is quiet large with their sandwiches for lunch which we will go back for sometime. The best part about the menu was I ordered Grey Dog's Breakfast which had French toast, eggs and breakfast meat! The problem I have with most places is that I want pancakes, waffles, or French toast sometime but with the eggs and meat, but they normally serve those items on it's own with fruit toppings. At Grey Dogs, you can choose the French toast or pancake and still get your other breakfast items without ordering it on the side. For that, I give it 5 stars or else it'd be a strong 4.5. Will definitely come back!
This is the original Grey Dog; the new one can be found on University. Both serve stellar sandwiches and soups in a tiny, one-room, first-come-first serve style atmosphere. Plus, they serve beer on tap: usually Dog Fish, Blue Point, and another brand or two.
I would suggest arriving before/after the rush (pre-noon, post-two, pre-six, post-nine) and grabbing the split pea or the BLT. Or both. But really, you can't go wrong.
FOOD: Solid. Sandwiches, salads, and soups. Hearty stuff to help ease the chill out of the bones.
SERVICE: Quick and cute. Seriously, the gals behind the counter make me forget my order at least once (girl friends of mine have similarly commented on the quality of the men).
I live in the LES and have walked all the way to Carmine St. for a Grey Dog's sandwich. They deliver, but nowhere near my apartment, so the trek is up to me. It's more than worth it. The #1 sandwich (roasted turkey, brie, tomatoes, raspberry mustard) is the best sandwich I've had in NYC. Their cookies are to die for, the chips that come with the sandwich are deliciously salty, and almost everyone who works there is attractive. I don't see anything wrong with this picture.
I used to go here for their coffee almost every single day when I was in the Village. Even if it was out of my way. I didn't order anything besides their Breakfast Blend but it was that good. I can't really tell you about anything else that they offer but I'm actually craving their coffee right now.
This is a solid go-to place.
The food isn't anything special but that's the point. There's a lot of it and its not super expensive.
Whether it's for brunch, a coffee, or drinks, grey dog will obey. everytime i come here (which is mainly for breakfast or brunch), I tell myself I'm going to get the satisfying grey dog breakfast: eggs any style, bacon, french toast, hash browns (simple and a little expensive but I'm a sucker for lumberjack-type breakfasts). But then as I wait on the usually long line, I look at the menu and get lost. I get lost in the monumental list of sandwiches most of which I still haven't tried. And then i get lost in the burgers, fish tacos, and other goodies I haven't tried. And then I change my mind and go with a grill chicken press (grilled with mozzarella, tomato, and pesto) so that I can have their great thick-cut bread. Or I get convinced into the cuban press. And it's all just so good.
And while I'm in this lost state, I think about how every great college restaurant was like this. This brings me back. Nostalgia. Yum.
In a 3 words: kind. of. awesome.
The place is a little cramped, but then again, where in NY isnt? The sandwiches are pretty bomb-diggity and come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes, so everyone in your party will be able to find something they like. As far as I could see, they are also served with potato chips, but I haven't the slightest if you can sub that out.
a bit pricey (~17 for a beer and sando) and you best get here at a good time cause it can get crowded at lunch, but ill be making the trek back here from tribeca soon enough.
You walk in, you see a line and you see how many people are lounging around, then you immediately want to walk back out. But don't. This place is bloody good.
FOOD: Anyone who knows Karim knows that Karim loves sammiches, and the Grey Dog's beef brisket press is solid. At $10, it's great. Also, you can even get it on wheat bread if you'd like. Or rye, or multigrain, or even Chhhhallah. Oy vey.
ATMOSPHERE: The lights are dim and the tables are close to each other. So don't expect this environment to be conducive to passing state secrets or making gay jokes. Someone will inevitably hear, and someone will inevitably give you dirty looks.
SERVICE: You walk up to the counter, order, and pay. Then a few minutes later, a big hairy dude yells out your name and brings you your grub. It's not elegant, but you're not paying for elegance here; you're paying for the good eats.
This is a great place to go for a breakfast or lunch, or just a coffee and a muffin. Grey dog is very trendy and WARNING there are many hipsters that frequent there, but it is worth it. We had fresh squuezed orange that tasted so fresh. We had just a little breakfast plate with eggs and potatoes and toast. I read an article about Tine Fey and she listed this place as one of her favs.
Can we just talk about Grey Dog for a minute? Yes, I do believe we can... I have never walked into this place, only ordered online so if I am still in love with delivery I can only imagine how good it is in house...
The people on the phone are so on point and thorough... +1
The house salad dressing is by far the best salad dressing in the world and I kind of want to drink it sometimes... +2
Add an iced espresso and life is grand... order it... eat it... yum
ohhh... memories. I used to work at houston and varick, this was back in 96. Grey Dog must have just opened around then, and I'd go with a coworker of mine. It was so cute to see people walk in off the street with their dogs. We'd get soup and sandwiches for lunch.
Carmine was and still is a cute neighborhood street, not a lot of through traffic, so you feel like you're in this little village. Well it is part of the west village I guess, but in this little area between 7th south and ave of the americas. The area is still great, though many more upscale restaurants there now.
But the michigan transplant is still there, and doing well.
Brunch, weekday lunch, whatever, you'll enjoy this place.
I wanted to really LOVE this place... it is super-cute and came highly recommended, but it still only earned 3-stars in my book. I ordered a sandwich, Turkey with a cranberry mustard, which was very, very tasty and comes with chips, BUT it cost me $10. As a broke student, $10 is more than I want to spend. I think if I had gone there for coffee and a baked-good, I probably would have been more satisfied with my experience.... just means I have to go back again and test that combination!
I've been here far too often not to go the fifth star. You have earned a special place in my food heart, Grey Dog.

This place is great! Not the spot to sit down for a long meal, but it was fresh, delicious, and… Read more »
they have the cutest delivery boys. oh, and the coffee is great too.
I love the atmostphere here and the food is solid, but quite expensive for the quantity of meat. They put one slice of meat and cheese and call it a sandwich! I've been going here for 6 years now and I have to say if Im going to spend $10 on a sandwich there are places on the same street I would rather splurge at.
My friend and I came here early--around 11ish and the place was half full, which is surprising considering that it was Saturday. We ordered coffee and food at the counter and seated ourselves (no one is going to take your order at the table or give you utensils). The coffee was OK, nothing special, but the food was so good. I ordered the baked oatmeal surrounded with steamed milk (new item) that came in a a large bowl and looked like a giant rice krispie with raisins. My friend ordered the egg croissant, which was superbly buttered with egg and melted cheese. Everything cost us only $17--pretty cheap for brunch if I do say so myself.
When it's crowded, trying to find a table, let alone waiting to order your food, is absolutely maddening, but if you're up to the challenge it's well worth it.
The sandwiches are fresh and delicious, the music is always hippie-approved, and despite the (at times) big crowds, you never feel overwhelmed or claustrophobic.
The wait can be excruciating, but the food makes it all better. Not a place to sit around for any amount of time, since the staff do rush you along once you're done with your food. The sandwiches are so bomb I only wish I lived on Carmine St so I could eat there every single morning.
YUM.
I have to say, when I walked in I was immediately skeptical. The place was packed with a very long line and it looked as though we would never get to a table. But we were assured by the friendly-ish staff that if we waited in line, there would be a place for us when we got our food. So we waited, ordered, got our food, and somehow we miraculously had a table when we were ready to sit down! Albeit this table was crammed in between hippies, angsty college students, and boastful actors...and we had our knees up our noses...but it was a place to sit and enjoy the huge sandwiches we had just been given. And oh man was it worth it!
The sandwiches were fantastic, the fries were tasty, the coffee was strong (so Shea said), and the cookie we had afterwards was good.
We will be back next time to try one of their other sandwiches and entrees and test their table-finding magic :)
An interesting place.
You stand in line to order, and once you do, then you find your seating at small round tables that have various pictures of the world or areas of the world carved into them... sandwiches are the regular specialty, but the breakfast isn't bad, either.
At breakfast, had the Grey Dog special - French Toast (or pancakes or something else) w/ Bacon (they couldn't sub in ham, only sausage or chicken apple dumplings), and a side of ham (grilled sliced ham).
The dish itself was unremarkable - eggs over easy to the side, crunchy small slices of bacon. But the fried onions were good - so long as they were hot. A bit pricey for breakfast, though, in my opinion. No big tables, so big groups can forget abou this place. Also not easy to maneuver in.
Everything is right in the world when I can roll out of bed, trudge a few blocks to Grey Dog and devour a plate of goodness to Wilco tunes.
The menu isn't huge but definitely well chosen. I've only had the breakfast options but their "snack menu" sounds delish. Additionally, the hand drawn signs, incredibly friendly staff and cozy wood-paneled interior makes grey dog the perfect alcove to duck into out of the cold. Leading to the only draw back: the crowds.
As long as you go early in the morning on the weekends or at off times, you'll enjoy the bliss from one of the few tiny tables.
Most proper coffee house in NYC. Wish this joint was in my 'hood.
A great neighborhood joint. My hummus/vegetable sandwich was huge and delicious. The overall atmosphere of the place was cheerful. I just wish they would keep the tables and the seats a little cleaner.
The place is dark, it feels like a bar/pub... that serves coffee? The coffee is decent at best. They do have a really interesting art exhibit on display right now.
Maybe I walked in with expectations too high...
Didn't try the food but I'd go back to try it.
For what it is, Grey Dog is absolutely as good as it gets...it's cozy, it's quirky, it's totally adorable, and my friend put it best when she called it the sort of place that you would spend all day in if you could.
The food isn't fancy but it's delicious--sandwiches, soups and salads (they also serve brunch/breakfast foods), and everything is a step or two above ordinary. The one downer is that seating can be a struggle since it's usually pretty crowded, but it always seems to work out somehow, even if it means you end up waiting around for a bit. (You order at a counter then find/are directed to a table.)
Grey Dog is the quintessential low-key Village hangout...spend your next Lazy Sunday here.
Came here on a Saturday evening on a date. Wasn't too crowded! Could be because the weather was bad, but anyway. There were many tasty sandwich selections, I had trouble choosing! You order your sandwich at the counter and they bring it over to your table. I got a cuban. It was good, though I wished they had the proper bread for it! Chips and pickle were also tasty. As you can see from my profile, my last meal would be chips/pickle/sandwich. i LOVE the chips/pickle combination. Anyway... that's really not the thing to go on about with a sandwich place... since its just chips and pickles. But yes, the sandwich was good, and I definitely want to go back and try the others!
And I didn't think the music was too loud, I could still have a conversation.
A HUGE "grey dog club" (with turkey) sandwich + STRONG coffee = a happy Shea. Very happy.
I have no idea how it manages to work out, but for some reason, as you stand in line waiting to order in a restaurant where every seat/table is full with people (including the damn hippies sipping their soy whatevers and editing the 56th terrible screenplay they have graced the world with for what seems like FIVE HOURS), a seat/table magically opens up *right* as you order, so you don't have to stand and wait for one to open up! Not only did this happen for us, but it happened for everyone else that was in our position. Believe me, I watched.
The sandwiches were really tasty. And huge. A bit pricey, but well worth the occasional splurge. I ordered a "hazelnut coffee," but really couldn't taste the hazelnut. We could smell it though, so I guess it counts? All in all, I really enjoyed this place.
Pretty laid back place to grab breakfast or brunch. Egg croissant sandwich is tasty. Don't get the pancakes with fruit cooked in it. It creates a very soggy pancake. Ask for the fruit on the side if you want it. Otherwise, the taste and texture of the pancake is good. Overall a good breakfast/brunch place.
I always, always end up going here at the worst times-lunch hour, however I still enjoy my tuna melt so much, it's the one thing I continue to order everytime I go there.
It's so juicy and soft, with the right amount of veggies and cheese, it couldn't be more perfect, of course unless God made it himself.
So good.
I also have had a wine or two there, kinda pricey, but then again I like good wine, so I expected that.
Four stars for rugged old school loveliness and delicious tuna!
Be sure to get there earlier if you do go, because it gets crazy insane busy around lunchtime and you will have to wait, but even that is worth it.
This was one of my favorite places to hit up on a weekday morning while in the Village. It was nice to sit near the window, read the paper and enjoy the iced coffee. It wasn't ever too busy though I only ever went here for brunch, but the breakfast sandwiches on croissants were fresh and delicious. The staff was also very friendly. It just felt so quaint and comfortable I could have gone each and every morning.
Halloween. The stage is set. At our table includes yours truly dressed as Sarah Palin, one friend dressed as Sexy Hitler, another lady dressed as a mustached boy, and another just a little tipsy from all the wine consumption (dressed as "pretty," yeah, don't ask). I'm pretty sure we were the most obnoxious group in the place, but luckily everyone was dressed up and drinkin', and so didn't seem to mind.
Thankfully this place has a decent bathroom and none of us had to wait long for it. A little sad that by the time we got there that they were no longer serving food. SO we settled for our beers and some of their ginormous homemade cookies (chocolate chip? oatmeal raisin? I don't recall).
Then they closed at midnight! Which was a blessing in disguise, since I had to work at 6 am the next day. Hurrah!
I liked this place and I hope to someday visit it while sober. But where's the fun in that?
Food was excellent. Had a Turkey&Brie sandwich and it was pretty much perfect.
Iced coffee OK.
Disappointed since this did NOT have WiFi nor laptop outlets which was what I went for.
grey dog is a company favorite since it's nearby my old office - no one is ever disappointed after making a trip, getting catering and/or delivery.
the sandwiches aren't super-inventive but they're always satisfying - you can't go wrong with the chicken/mozzarella/pesto sandwich on cranberry walnut bread, seared tuna salad, turkey burger and/or chicken/meatball soup.
the cookies deserve their own paragraph since they're so freaking good! my favorite is the peanut butter chocolate but a close second is the chocolate chip - all soft, dough-y and chewy as well as the size of my head. (for those who don't dig frisbee size cookies, there are also little mini ones that can quell a craving.) that alone is a happy meal.
however, with all the great places to eat in NYC, grey dog falls kind of flat. this place is like your high school ex-boyfriend - dependable and a guaranteed good time, but also somewhat boring. but if you're looking for something cheap and good, then grey dog fits the bill.
I love this place, when I worked on Hudson Street it was a staple lunch destination. Great coffee, good snacks and sandwiches. I crave the zucchini spelt muffins all the time. This is a nice place to head to with a friend any time of day. It's not very New York at all, and sometimes that's a welcome and good thing.
Grey dog is good for the soul.
* Raspberry lemon aid
* Brie and green apple sandwich
* Veggie Chili
All to be celebrated.
Looks like: Small Town
Sounds like: Community
Taste like: Fresh
Smells like: Cookin'
Feels like: Home
I was pretty excited about discovering this place because it gives off a very cool/hippy vibe. The menu also looked like it had a fairly good selection of interesting sandwiches, so I gave it a shot.
I asked what sandwich was popular and was told to try to grilled chicken, which I did. It was large, came with two smallish pickle-halves, and some a bed of chips. There was something wrong with the pickles (which I usually love). They just tasted funny, not fresh, and I couldn't take more than two bites. The chips reminded me a lot of regular lays potato chips, greasy and without much flavor. I'm not a big fan, but some people are.
The chicken sandwich was large and had pesto, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and was placed between too large pieces of sourdough bread (I chose the bread). Despite these seemingly delicious ingredients, the sandwich was very disappointingly bland... I didn't think it was bad, it just didn't seem to have much flavor. Overall, a disappointment.
They only accept credit cards for purchases of $10 or more, but they gave me a break since the sandwich came out to just a bit shy of $10.
I've passed by Grey Dog's Coffee in the morning on my way to "work" and there is ALWAYS a line out the door. Naturally I thought that meant that their coffee was good.
WRONG. People do line up for Starbucks here, after all.
Their vanilla chai didn't come from a tea. It didn't even come with some kind of a spice syrup. Everything was premade, mixed with a bit of milk, and resteamed. I mean, it tasted all right, but ICK. It was an expensive cup of chai, for what i got (about $4! I'd rather buy a cupcake!).
Plus, their music was obnoxious, intrusive and WAY too loud so everyone else was shouting to be heard. ICK.
Who was the moron who said that Wi-Fi was free? There IS no Wi-Fi!! Or plugs! Or anything that could remotely help your computer and it's internet needs!
Lastly, the thing that dropped this place to two stars, was that as I was sadly trying to conserve my laptop batteries, I noticed A BABY COCKROACH ON THE SEAT NEXT TO ME, just scuttling under the girl next to me's bag. I tried to sweep it to the floor so I could end its miserable arthopod life with a crunch of my foot, but it merely crawled into a hole in the bench.
Horrified. Never going back AGAIN.
Grey Dog's is one of those places I should hate with an undying passion. The wooden interior, the hand-written signs, the faux-boho clientele who queue up religiously every weekend, and even the Old World-style sign bearing their name all add up to a pretension I should have no trouble disdaining alongside hipsters, performance art, and fashion boutiques for animals.
But damn it, I really like this place.
Maybe it's their cookies, which are huge and make me feel like a little kid when I dunk them into a tall glass of milk. Maybe it's their teas and chai lattes, which are surprisingly good for a place that prides itself on serving coffee. Maybe it's the fact that you can sit down and have an actual meal here amongst people who are actually really cool if you talk to them. Or maybe it's the ridiculously attractive employees, who, bizarrely, are all really nice.
Whatever it is, I can overlook the fact that this place is literally bursting at the seams most of the time, the tables are too close together, it's too loud to have anything beyond a cursory conversation, and it's also kind of dark inside. And here's a tip: when it is crazy as all hell in here on the weekends, and you just want to something to go, you can skip to the absolute back of Grey Dog's and order from there. Otherwise, wait on the regular line...and they'll get a table for you while you order. Told you they were nice.
Bathroom Grade: N/A. I did use the bathroom, a long time ago, but I don't remember it, and honestly, today I felt going-through-the-womb enough without having to squeeze back there (that is, if the bathroom indeed exists and I'm just not delirious).
