2 reviews for The Green Onion Restaurant
Once upon a time in a quaint little white house just east of Portland State I was blessed to dine upon a fabulous Persian meal served by the most amiable restaurant owner.
She overheard us discussing our surprise regarding the few lamb choices and popped over to recommend the lamb shank, describing in detail the dish itself, and the meat purchased specially from a halal butcher in Silverton. My friend of course took her recommendation and was duly impressed by the beyond tender and very generous dinner presented to him.
Myself, I had a single kabob that was a combination of half steak and half chicken. Surprisingly it was more than filling. Also the two meats were marinaded in different seasonings and had very different but complimentary flavors - what a pleasant surprise.
Finally, the magnificently prepared Persian tea was a perfect end to the meal and worth the slightly unexpected wait while she brewed it for us.
After a long day of registering voters in Portland, the last thing I expected was to sit down to an excellent Persian dinner with the new friends I'd made throughout the day. I'd figured maybe a slice of pizza was in store for me, but instead I was very pleasantly surprised. One of the organizers I was with had been to the Green Onion several times and was acquainted with the owner, so she arranged for us to fill up on the buffet at the end of our long day. The food was a testament to the geographical crossroads where Iran sits... tzadziki and hummus with pita and falafel giving up the middle eastern roots, basmati rice and lentils just like the dal bhat I've enjoyed in India and Nepal. This is served up in the comfy confines of the owners house, so watch your step on the way to the buffet... she tries to shoo her cute little long haired cat away, but he wants to say "Hi" to the dining room's visitors.
