9 reviews for The Green Bean
Good food and lots of vegetarian options. The most appealing thing is really that they get all of their ingredients from local places. There's a board they set right out front that tells you which farms their produce is coming in from, which I think is pretty neat.
Prices are a little high for such a small, cute place. They really specialize in breakfast goods, but they now have a lunch menu as well.
I had the pancakes and I was a little disappointed that they weren't airier (they seemed a little depressed). My side of roasted red potatoes was pretty good though. Other people with my group had the eggs, biscuits, and vegetable sandwiches. No complaints, but no rave reviews either. I think if you're really set on a vegetarian meal, you might do better to go to the Haymarket a few doors down.
There's something about The Green Bean that makes me want to go all the time - just being there is an enjoyable experience. I regularly go for breakfast but they also have some lunch options on the menu. The food is great all the time but sometimes my home fries seem to be a bit overdone. Like they've been sitting on the back of the grill all morning drying out. I'm willing to oversee this minimal grievance because the rest of my meal is always really, really awesome. I usually go for one of the egg scramble collabos - always made with top quality ingredients. I'm a huge fan of the scones because, with a spot of jam, they are the perfect sweet ending to any breakfast. Coffee is self-serve via the Coffee Tree (makes sense when you visit) and the iced lattes are some of my favorite around.
This little place caught the attention of my boyfriend and I while we were exploring Northampton.
The menu is comprised mostly of vegetarian and vegan dishes. My boyfriend felt guilty ordering the regular beef burger, and I would have too, so I opted for The Green Bean Plate (I think that's what it was called...), which is comprised of greens (changes daily/by season), rice, and tempeh. I had never tried tempeh before, but it was pretty good, though really salty, as was the soy-sauce-like side sauce, which I guess was supposed to balance out the bland greens and rice. It wasn't bad, just not my taste, seeing as I'm not a vegan or vegetarian.
I also ordered a Green Walnut tea, which came in a cute little teapot. However, while the teapot was cute, the cup was some random mug decorated with rainbow fish. It looked like they had grabbed it from someone's house or a garage sale. Maybe they were going for some kind of quirky look, but it didn't fit in with the other glasswares and decor of the restaurant. Plus, the mug had clearly not been given the best wash. Ew ew ew.
The food here is inexpensive. I wish there had been more lunch choices, but there was a lot of breakfast choices. Maybe I would have had better luck with that, but I had already eaten breakfast and was more in the mood for lunch food.
Our waitress was nice and helpful. She welcomed conversation and answered my questions, as I clearly gave away that I was neither vegan nor vegetarian.
Really enjoyed this place. Took my daughter and niece there on camp visiting day and everyone loved it. Iced coffee was OK - nothing great - but the food was very good and very fresh, and the vibe about as blue as a blue state could be, without being too kitchy, kind of like Northampton itself.
The food here is amazing. Tons of great vegetarian/vegan options, all with an emphasis on local and organic ingredients. A great place for brunch, but come well before you get hungry, because you'll be waiting for some time.
I really want to like the Green Bean even more, but I can't give a restaurant five stars when the servers tend to be somewhat cold and indifferent toward their customers. In my experience here, the service leaves something to be desired, but if you speak up for what you want, you'll get it, and it will be delicious.
this place was great. went for brunch and it satisfied meat-eaters, vegans, and glutards alike. i had the "this and that" which was two eggs and two pancakes or french toast. i had the vegan gluten-free pancakes (so my vegan bf could share some b/c i'm the sweetest best gf ever, even though i kinda really wanted the buttermilk ones), they were cornmeal based, and i have to admit, quite delish. i also shared a side of sausage (with another meat-eater) and a side of the daily greens, which were a bit bland but i love veggies for the sake of veggies, so no complaints there. the fruit bowl also tasted very fresh, and overall it was the perfect combination of foods for breakfast (eggs, pancakes, meat, veggies, and fruit, oh my!)
really lovely surroundings for brunch with friends, but yes, it was a wait.
My gf and I ordered 2 eggs, scone, potatoes and sausages. Our eggs were swimming in oil.
I eat here at least two days a week, sometimes three. I really enjoy their locally grown, organic food. Everything always tastes fresh.
I highly recommend their Tofu Scramble plate, even if you're not a big fan of tofu. They gently saute chunks of tofu in olive oil, and season it with
herbs. It tastes very flavorful, and melts in your mouth. This dish comes with their superb roasted red potatoes, and a small scone.
They also have a nice lunch menu, centered mainly around sandwiches, salads, and homemade soups. Their Tuna Melt sandwich is splendid. It features lightly toasted bread, a generous portion of tangy tuna salad, and sharp, gooey melted cheddar cheese. I also like their Turkey sandwich, which you can custom-build as you wish.
The only drawbacks to the Green Bean, are that you sometimes have to wait a lengthy amount of time to get a table, especially on Sundays. Also, you can't come here for dinner, since they close at 3PM daily.
The tofu is nice and really unique. I usually get hit on when I go there. I'll leave it up to you whether that is a plus or a minus. This place actually might be worth 4 stars but I thought calling an omelet Zorba the Greek was really offensive. If you are less PC about Greece just add another star to my review.
