I stumbled upon this place by chance and it is now one of my favorite book stores ever!
They have a fantastic selection of books, in particular vintage books and newspapers. I'm a huge fan of antique books, sadly I'm not rich enough to start collecting them. But there is just something about a the smell and feel of a leather bound book with old pages that makes me happy. :)
Behind the cash register is a full wall of collectible books, and there are piles of old newspapers in protective coverings upstairs.
But vintage books is not all that this fantastic store provides. They have a wonderful selection of new and used books from classic lit to very useful referance books, this small store manages to pack in a wide variety of reading treasures.

This place instantly became one of my favorite bookstores. There's something about used books that gets me into the "I-want-to-curl-up-in-a-big-comfy-chair-by-the-fir eplace" mood. I feel the same way about a used CD store. Books are still my favorite over music stores.

There was a great selection of genres.  I waltzed to each shelf until I hit the psychology section and found great books about social psychology, cultural psychology, and my new favorite author, Oliver Sacks!  I wanted to get more books.  The old textbooks and journals were calling for me, but my wallet told me to stay put until next time.

A lot of the paperbacks I found cost less than $10 and that's definitely plus on my list.  We easily spent at least 2 hours here fawning over the books.  Can't you tell I'm a bookworm?

I canceled my Comcast cable at the end of 2008.

Having cable was a nice run - while it lasted - but deep down - I knew that the endless marathons of reality TV well into 2:00 am in the morning  (often on weeknights) were not helping my creative energy in any way. Despite my deep love of shows like Intervention and the like - I had to part ways with my cable box.

And so yesterday I proudly brought in the new year with a quick late night read of Chelsea Handler's memoir of one night stands - "My Horizontal Life." A solid read and a hundred times better than losing sleep, watching Chelsea Lately (which I've done many a time...because Chelsea Handler is hilarious).

I purchased said book at The Great Overland Book Company. They have one of the best and most organized memoir sections I have encountered in the city.

I'm looking forward to reading the five other memoir books that I picked up yesterday - perfect accompaniments for the slew of quiet cable free evenings ahead of me.

Walking around 9th with a buddy after coming from the science museum and saw a couple bins for dollar books. Being the two literates that we are, this immediately grabbed our attention.

Ended up with a book on how to clean fish, and something about evolutionary psychology. The old man that ran the place was friendly, and even struck up a conversation with us.

The upstairs makes the selection quite diverse, enough where I might go back. Which I think is saying something for a used bookstore in San Francisco, no?

Notice to all local bookstore patrons: it's the lonely soldier now in the Inner Sunset.  Except for the mystery novel/comic bookstore that never seems to be open.

They have just about anything you'd like and none of the 'tude.  Yes, it's a little crampy and kooky, just like you like a used bookstore to be.  I always come out of there with some treasure or three.  I hope you do, too.

It doesn't seem like this bookstore needs another positive review for somebody to understand that it's a great place. However, it's just that good. I think it's a phenomenal store, and I wish that everyone would shop here and places like it, instead of amazon. There's really something about the locale and the books that just can't be captured in a Kindle 2.

I tend to like a good bookstore and this fits the mold.  As some people do, I probably don't read enough for fun. Too much work content to read but alas we make excuses. After finding this place, my desire to read more for leisure has been rejuvenated. And two nights ago, finished book number 1 of 2009.

A neat place.  Reasonably stocked in almost all departments, with a nice selection of fiction and a slight over-representation of Americana and Californiana.

For a bookstore that hasn't been around long, they have a *lot* of older and first editions of books, mostly for reasonable prices.  It looks like they get their stock from buying libraries...not from visiting thrift stores.

Their prices are pretty close to Internet standards, definitely superior to the prices nearby at Black Oak.

Well worth a visit.

This place is pretty cool. Although it's a little small, it's cozy, has good music, and a good selection of books. I even found a book that my old Chinese school classmate told me about. I ended up getting two books, which was $13. At that price, you can only get one book these days. I actually have a ton of used and unwanted books I plan to sell to them. I wonder how much money I'll get.

Great little neighborhood store. Nice, eclectic general selection. I often find something I can't resist in their window as I am walking by. The staff are friendly, without being overwhelming. I think my one complaint is that they should have a better sci-fi section! They've certainly got the room for one, however, they probably can't compete with Elsewhere books (a nearby sci-fi/mystery specialty bookstore) so I suppose I can understand. I really like this place and am glad they're here in my hood.

Small, two-floor shop cramped with piles of books and a decent Americana, Western and art section. I come to browse and always walk with a stack of well priced gems.

I like the quaint feel of the place, with the extra books stacked in neat little piles on the floor. This bookstore is just OVERFLOWING. I liked it. Much better than the sterility of Borders. I'd have to say that if you're looking for recently released books, you're less likely to find it here than at Green Apple. Also, I missed the way that Green Apple shows off their books in that way that makes everything look appealing. So The Great Overland is a good bookhome, but it doesn't make me excited like G.A. can.

This is the best book store in SF. I enjoy coming here and browsing around the shelves.

Having been quite familiar with the Black Oak bookshop a few blocks down, I remembered driving by this shop a few weeks ago. Interesting, a two-story bookstore that I never thought was there. After a few hazy minutes of scratching my head I knew that there used to be a medical bookstore there but they apparently jumped ship and left under the cover of darkness. Now, the second floor has been opened up and the selection of books here was quite impressive. I am a big collector of American Civil War unit histories and travel books and both of them exceeded my expectations by a lot. It was quiet and I looked around for at least an hour. Definitely pay them a visit.

Meh.  A decent used bookstore but it really doesn't do anything to make me feel the need to swing by on any regular basis.  Decent fiction and history sections but nothing overly great, prices were okay.  Given that Black Oak closed, I guess I will be going here more often.  So worth going to if you are in the neighborhood but not necessarily worth the effort of going out of your way to visit.

I love this place.  I've never come out empty handed for sure.  Today, I bought Midnight's Children and wanted to buy On Beauty by Zadie Smith- I was only lucky with one, however had a lovely couple of words with the gentleman who works there about Zadie Smith and found out she was interviewed on NPR.  So came back home and heard the eloquent Ms. Smith thanks to TGOBC.

The history and art book selection is notable. In fact, it seems a lot of effort has been put into much of the individual categorization, so if you are looking for something in particular this might be a good place to check. Actually the thing I really like is the collection of old newspapers going back 100+ years, much or all of them local. They're pretty cool to look at.
