On our way to Williamsburg, VA last Thursday, my husband suggested that we stop by The Grate Steak, upon the recommendations of some people he is working with on a project in Elizabeth City, NC.
They tempted him with the promise of  being able to grill his own steak, which always appeals to a meat-a-tarian.
From the outside, The Grate Steak is run down in the way that a lot of heritage steakhouses are. The parking lot feels pretty "Sizzler." The building is gray and worn. Inside, the tables and booths look a bit old and out of date. Its okay though. You're not at Ruth's Chris or Morton's. You're at The Grate Steak. You're not there for the decor. You're there for the opportunity to grill your own meat selections. You're there to feel like the barbecue king, minus the clean up and the dishes.
My husband chose the "Owner's Cut" Delmonico. This entitled him to tour the special meat freezer and hand-select his slab of beef. Me, well I just chose a small filet mignon, which was delivered to our table.
There's something really nice about grilling over charcoal in a social environment. Customers watch other customers grill and look for techniques and tips. You can slather your beef in butter and a choice of sauces, which is nice. You can grill bread and choose your sides.
Our suggestions- we'd like balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the salad bar. We wished for fresh cracked pepper by the grill. We would have loved a few more spices by the grill. Other than that, we enjoyed our hand-grilled steaks in a 25-year Hampton Roads steak institution. Our service was pretty good and we popped in kind of late.
With Grate Steak, you get what you think you're gonna get. No surprises. Good food. Vintage steakhouse feel.

I've loved this place ever since I was a little kid and it did not disappoint me when I went back for the first time in about 5 years last week while visiting VA. My boyfriend was a first-timer and loved that he could grill up his own steak. I got the prime rib, which was amazing. The only thing that I didn't like was that we came in about 15 minutes before they closed and they were already starting to close everything up. I felt kinda rushed through our dinner because of that. I had to rush up to the salad bar to get topping for my potato because they had started putting everything away. Another annoyance was that we ordered mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and never received them. The waitress said that the cook never received the order, like it was our fault or something. She was kind of short with us throughout the whole meal until right before we left, although she was very friendly and talkative with the other patrons around us. The food certainly didn't disappoint but I was slightly irritated with the service!

I've eaten there twice and enjoyed both meals. The self-serve salad bar was well stocked and had a nice variety.

went here for a baby shower. And I was surprised so many people told me how great this place was, and that they won awards. I have gotten better steak everywhere else. I have never been back and never will be back.
