Bottom line:  Golf Mart is an excellent place to get clubs repaired and try out clubs, but only a mediocre place to buy equipment  in comparison to the internet.

4 Stars because of their great club repair department and knowledgeable staff.  I had a $400 driver with a broken shaft that I thought might be history.  At best I thought I'd have to leave it here a few weeks to allow for ordering of parts and then pay a steep bill to end up with a flawed driver.  I took took it to the repair section, and they fixed it *on the spot* within 30 minutes for a surprisingly low price - - nearly free.  The repairman was able to fix it by removing just a small end section of the graphite shaft instead of ordering an entire new custom graphite shaft (pricey).  The best part is it appears they do expert repair work: the driver looks like new, the grip & head fit, work, and look perfect.  I swear I'm now even able to drive the ball an average of 9 inches further.  The repair guy obviously knew his stuff as he talked to me for over 10 minutes about the various intricacies of this type of repair.

Golf Mart is only mediocre for buying golf equipment IMO - - 3 stars for this section.  They give discounts on a lot of previous years models from various equipment companies, but you can get much better prices online at discount golf sites such as http://www.tgw.com  However, Golf Mart does have one of the widest selections of equipment of instore equipment in the bay area, has a great 90 day return on many items, nice areas to hit balls with their clubs and putters.  Note: If you're a golfer in the bay area, you're required to go here at least once and spend a minimum of 2 hours.

There is a reason none of the reviews for this place are bad. If you like golf or even if you don't this is a cool store. They have a million of everything. Clubs, balls, clothing, they have a huge selection of everything. You can even try out all clubs in one of their personal driving stalls.

The bf took me here to pick out my first pair of golf shoes before we hit the range.  As he parked his car in the lot, my impression was that this place was gonna be some small, cheesy, outdated store that carries a bunch of random flee market stuff. =P
As soon as i walked in, all of those thoughts were immediately eliminated. It's 10 times bigger than it looks from the outside. It is well stocked, neat, and has a thorough inventory of every golf item you need.  the staff here are nice and helpful. They gave me a non-bias breakdown of the pros and cons on the shoes that i had picked out and left me to decide on what fits me best.

Staff is very helpful.  You can try the clubs before you buy them.  You can buy them and return them for store credit if they don't feel right on the course.
What more can you ask for?

Perfect fit for beginners to serious golfers. Great selection of used clubs too!

It's like when you used to walk into Toys-R-Us and discover you all of a sudden "needed" toys you already had... except that The Golf Mart lets you play with those toys in the store.  And the employees don't harass you if they catch you playing with those toys unattended.

Excellent selection, terrific 90-day policy, knowledgeable and friendly staff, monstrous putting green, and a well-stocked pre-owned section.

Trust me, they've got what you're looking for- in every length, lie angle, flex, size, and color you could possibly need.  And if for some reason you find yourself in there, you can probably afford what it is you're eyeballing, so no reason to beg mommy or daddy to buy it for you.  You only need to justify the purchase to yourself, and whatever it is, yes, you do need it.

Have you ever tried to find a set of good condition, used, left-handed, ladies clubs? Not an easy task... The staff here was very helpful, and had the used, good-condition, left handed clubs I was looking for.

Now to learn to play...

Just like everyone said, this place shouldn't get any 3 or less star ratings. i am a first time golfer and was referred to the golf mart by a friend after a non successful search for a used set at golfsmith. Chris helped me find everything i needed to get on the green from used king cobra irons, nickent driver, a putter with a nice big white guide line, and a simple compact stand bag. i learned a great deal and tested out about nine different drivers before making my choice. PRICES ARE GREAT! Chris even reduced the prices for me to keep me in the 400 range. I will return soon for a 5 wood. awesome experience for this first timer !!!

This place is a sight to see.

It's basically a huge warehouse filled with anything related to golf.

The Golf Mart has it all except for a full 18 hole course.

This place is like the Costco of Golf equipment. You name it they most probably got it new or used. What I like about this spot is when you trade in your old clubs and can't find anything you like they give you store credit so that the next couple times you come in and finally find the club you looking for you good to go. Staff is very helpful answers all of my questions and by far the best spot to get your golf needs in the bay area.

I went here for the first time today.  I've been to a LOT of golf stores and bought a LOT of stuff.  I can honestly say, this is one of the best golf retail stores I've ever been to.

Every serious golfer knows there is one thing that is more important above all else when buying golf equipment: you must be able to try it before you buy it.  Golf Mart had every set of clubs from every major manufacturer available for you to try.  You could take the whole set and try it if you wanted, rather than just one single club.  They have plenty of hitting cages so there was no waiting.  They also had every driver, putter and club imaginable.  This place is enormous.  I think I heard angels singing when I walked in the door.

Skip is the nicest guy around.  He let me hit a number of different irons, before deciding on new Callway X-20s.  He then spent another 15 minutes fitting me for the irons.  Can't wait to get my hands on 'em.

As for shoes, I was amazed.  I only wear Ecco.  Most stores, if I'm lucky, will have one style.  You try on a pair, then order the color you want.  This place had every shoe Ecco makes in every color.

If you are within 25 miles of this store, I would make it your only choice for golf supplies.  Additionally, the prices were on par with anything you will find at an online store.  I could spend hours here...actually, I did.

This is the best Golf shop in the Bay Area. I recently bought a new set of irons there. The team were very patient, measured me up properly and gave me all the brand options and prices.  Custom fitting is a huge plus. You can try all the sizings and hit into the video screen ( owtrh going just for that!). You really notice a difference when you have the right sized clubs that fit your body type and swing type.  Having fitted clubs has made a big difference to my scores. They even gave me some golf balls as part of the deal. Nice touch.  I've been back since for 3 & 5 woods and other bits and pieces. Ask for Jake, very knowledgeable and no hard sell.

As I drive up in the parking lot, I'm feeling like this place might be a dump because of the cheesy advertisements on the glass, and it just looks a bit on the small side.

All of those thoughts and concerns are immediately vaporized as I open the door and step into this MECCA for golfers.  I could have sworn there was this bright glowing radiating light  from the entire store, as I said under my breath, "wow."

The store is huge and they have everything you need here.  All the equipment, mats to test hit balls, a simulator for fitting, putting area, and services department.  I got my old retired driver reshafted here for $10.

Friendly staff as well.  They didn't have the vokey spin milled 60 degree 04 bounce oil can finish wedge that I wanted, but they brought it in from another store the next morning.

One stop shop.

A huge selection and a 90 day return policy make this a great place to buy your new clubs. I recently started golfing again after an injury layoff and decided that I wanted to upgrade my gear. That persimmon driver (Okay, before woods were metal they used to be made out of wood, That's where the name comes from) I was using had to go. I bought my new sticks here largely because of the return policy but I probably won't be exchanging them because I tend to stay with the clubs I have.
I figure if there is something wrong it's probably gonna be with my swing and not the club.

The Valhalla of golf stores on the peninsula. The only place to go if you are in the market for golf equipment, clothing or accessories.

The selection is massive: every set of irons from every manufacturer who matters. Couldn't find the Callaway FT-i when it first came out? Golf Mart had ten of 'em.

I wanted a Sun Mountain Rainflex jacket for this winter season, and kept going to Golfsmith SF in search of it. After months of run-around, one trip to the Golf Mart landed me exactly what I was looking for. Sort of. This store was sold out of the color I wanted, but had one shipped up from L.A. in two days.

The employees are knowledgeable and helpful. The place is massive. Gorgeous. A bigger putting green than a few of the SF muni courses (you know who you are), and every brand of putter one could reasonably ask for - and a few extras to boot.

Don't settle for trying just what a small store has in stock before you buy, head to Golf Mart and try everything. It's nirvana for golf gear addicts. Or people who just need to get a new set of irons.

5 stars for the play for 90 days and exchange it policy.  No strings.  You can play a club every day for as long as 90 days.  If you don't like it, you can exchange it for full value.

Big place with a huge selection of new and used clubs.  They have everything for your game (balls, shoes, apparel etc.).  Their simulator is crap on yardage, but good on ball flight, but who needs a simulator when you can actually play the club for 90 DAYS!

I think there's one in Marin too, but it looks smaller.

Drive up to the front and it looks like a crappy store.  Walk in and you pinch yourself because you've just landed in the golf equipment utopia - well maybe not utopia because you still have to pay to get stuff.

Golf Mart is stacked, stocked, packed, and absolutely huge.  They have an excellent selection on pretty much anything, and if they don't have what you want they can order it.  They have 3 stalls where you can hit irons, you can ask for some help if you need it or just grab what you want to try and hit away with no one pressuring you.  They also have an electronic driving range to try out drivers.

I just started playing recently and bought all my equipment there as well as all my gf's clubs.  Have been happy with the service and products so far.  My new 3-wood broke and they it them a long time to get it sent and returned from Cobra, but they gave me a loaner of my choice to use during the entire time they had my club.

If you love golf, you'll love the Golf Mart.  I suggest not going with your girlfriend because you will spend much more time in there than they want you to and will nag to leave.  Go alone and make Golf Mart your dirty little mistress.  Go ahead, buy that driver, she won't find out.

Golf Mart is a huge store with lots of selection and lots of space to try out clubs.  The staff was very helpful but not annoyingly over-helpful.  They have a simulator that they use to evaluate your swing for speed, club length, and the angle of the clubface with the shaft.

Also, I like their 90-day full exchange policy which I believe is better than Golfsmith which will only give you 90% back within 90 days.  Prices seemed in line with what I was expecting.

All in all, worth the trip out to check it out.

So here is the lowdown... Golf Mart really can't get any less than 4 stars, if only because of its asininely large selection of practically every piece of golf equipment imaginable -- sticks, balls, shoes, bags, clothes, hats, markers, tees, towels, cupholders, stat cards, and even those Q-link bracelets worn by old foagie golfers-in-denial.  The place is literally a warehouse, including not only every product ever made in golf EVER, but also a putting green spanning half the floor, four practice mats into nets, one enclosed tee with the projected driving range (which is a load of 'ish unfortunately, will get to that in a second), and a final mat used for fittings only.  So right away, you can already tell this place is a circus... you're more than welcome to freely select and hit away on any of their demo or used clubs (which amount to quite a few... in fact, you may be lucky to find a rare gem in decent condition like discontinued Titleist 905R, so its almost like xmas), along with most of their new sticks with face-taping.  Looks like they also have a club-making area in the back, so I'm quite sure they'll regrip clubs, cut them down, bend lies, etc...  So if you're just looking for a store with a gross amount of clubs and the ability to hit balls until your hands fall off, stop reading now and just get your ass to Golf Mart.  Seriously.  Note that I'm pretty sure Golfsmith also offers a similar 90 day trial deal, so that comparison is basically a wash.

My only two complaints were thus... maybe it could have been that I came by at noon on a Friday, but the salesfolk were nonexistent.  This normally is a good thing, since I despise guys who just sit there watching you hit balls, practically giving you the stink-eye until you buy something.  Although maybe that is just because my swing is BUTTER... or not.  Hmm.  Regardless, if I wanted to tape up a new club or try a specific demo, I would have had to wait around for the one employee doing a fitting, or go ask the cashier.  This may be an issue for some folks.

Also, I'm really starting to get irritated at stores who still employ, and swear by, those practice stations that have the driving range projection screen with your supposed ball flight.  I swear to god I've never seen anything so inaccurate and deceptive in my life.  Shots off the toe that normally would fade to the right would instead by shown as splitting the uprights, while balls that I pured were shown as snap hooks.  Granted, most golfers who use these things should know better, but it is still annoying to see people get conned into thinking that their new FT-i is perfect for them based on a couple mediocre swings.

a lifetime ago, you couldnt find me driving around without a few things in my car.

weapon of some sort, you know a short sword, a gun, a baton, a club... something like that, a bottle of remy in the trunk, i heart remy, thank god i never got the centurion tattoo like i wanted too and lastly, a set of golf clubs.

one of the few things i regret is that i never kept up with golf. i started at a very early age, i believe like 7 or 8. i wasnt too shabby. only problem was, i was always on or off every other year or so.

time to get back into it. its good exercise, you get to get outdoors, drive carts, drink beers and hit a little ball. fun times.

the golf mart is HUGE. they have a simulator, always fun and a few spots to try out new clubs. they have an outstanding selection of new clubs, clearance clubs (holy shit honma pro tourny set for $800?!?!? you gotta be kidding me, i almost bought them right then and there, but damn im so broke this month).

if you are just getting into the sport, this is probably a good spot to hit up. even though you might be able to find the same clubs a few % cheaper online, having someone that really knows what they are talking about and finding the right clubs for you is probably a good thing.

and besides, support local small businesses yo.

wait a minute , did you say 90 return policy? well good god thats an awesome policy.

I used to go to Roger Dunn's when I lived in Southern Cali.  I just found out that the Golf Mart and RD are owned by the same company.  The club return policy is the best and you can really score on a great used set at a vrey reasonable price.  They have a lot of inventory and sell anything and everything you could imagine.  The over run balls are a great deal.  A great place for all your golfing needs.

Everything's well laid out here.  I especially liked their wall of gloves.  I've never seen such an easy to navigate section of gloves.  All hung on the wall, organized by left hand in one section, right hand about 10 feet away.  Sorted by sizes that actually weren't all mixed up.  Excellent variety of brands of gloves by price and materials.  Even had a good selection of generic gloves for those who burn through gloves all too frequently.  Yeah, the wall of gloves really impressed me.

ended up at the golf mart in search of a decent bag and travel component. i was pleasantly surprised when i walked in to find an extremely large warehouse like place with a practice putting green and practice range to test out any of the thousands of new clubs that they have in stock. they literally had hundreds of bags to choose from, so i was pretty overwhelmed. thankfully, friendly staff prevailed and helped me with my selection. he even took it to my car for me! i couldn't have been happier.
