One of the best kept secrets of the Bay Area as far as golf courses go!  Next time you're driving past the giant Moffett Field Hangars on 101, just keep in mind that there's an entire 18-hole golf course right behind them . . . right on the Bay!  Their "twilight" rate of $14 used to start around 5 hours before sunset, which is plenty of time to finish 18, especially since this course is normally empty, even on the weekends!  I believe even full weekend rate was still less than $30!  Plus, this is a standard length course at 6,524 yards.  They don't start you off easy either . . . hole number 1 is a dogleg-left 400+ par 4, followed by a 500+ par 5 . . . into the wind . . . with a lake in front of the green!  Yeah, then number 3's another 500+ dogleg-right par 5 . . . don't drive it too far though, there's yet another lake!  Talk about gettin over the hump early!

Now, the only tricky part is getting to the golf course . . . past the two guard shacks (machine guns).  If you're company's a DoD contractor, you can get through the guards with your company badge and an ID.  Call them beforehand to make sure though . . . I tried giving the guards the secret handshake and a wink once and woke up 2 hours later, naked in a back room, forced to listen to a Paris Hilton/Kevin Federline duet!  In any case, once you get to the course, they'll issue you a real ID for future use.  Companies like Lockheed, Cisco, SunMicro, NASA, etc., could all get on in the past.

Trust me, low-key, hassle free, non-busy, cheap golf in the Bay Area is totally worth the risk of getting shot at.  Oh yeah, if it's airshow week, I'd recommend waiting to tee-off until after the F-16's finish practicing.  Their afterburners have knocked my ball off the tee before . . .

Just a quick status update for Moffett -- generally still the same mediocre conditions, especially the dry, dirt fairways, even after the course redux.  However a couple interesting things to note:

- If you are a NASA contractor, it is only 16 bucks for peak-hour weekend round... insanely cheap.  Maybe government work does have its perks

- The greens are noticeably improved... consistent and fast, so that was a nice surprise.

- The staff is still a little bizarre at this place... old man driving the range picker asking that we don't hit balls in his general direction?  pro shop attendant saying that he is all out of range tokens at 830 am?  good thing the range ball barn was wide open and ready for the taking....

- It looks like they completely removed all water hazards due to the putrid stink they used to cause (most notably on hole 2, where the greenside pond has been replaced with massive bunkers... a giant improvement, although a big reduction in difficulty)

- You can definitely see they're still in the improvement phase... laying down concrete for cart paths, fertilizing the poo-infested fairways, etc...  Hopefully in a year's time things will really start looking up.

A must  for all active military. Moffet field is a challenging golf course that will truly test your skill for a low price. The place has improved throughout the year and no longer smells like hot garbage by the drinks. If you are military nine holes is 5 dollars and 18 is 10 dollars(it used to be free they just changed this). Contractors and prior military pay 15 for twilight hour which starts at 2.  The range is horrible but for 2 dollars for a small bucket it's a great way to warm up. Restaurant and bar staff are friendly. Have played golf with alot of veterans there and it is one of the few places in the bay area where I feel welcomed and can talk WAR!

This is one of the few courses in the Bay Area I've never had the opportunity to play.  I would love it if someone with access would drop me a line and help me get on the course.  Drinks are on me.

History

Established in 1959

The U.S. Navy built the original 9 hole golf course in 1959.  It is located on Moffett Field just east of hangars #2 and #3.  In 1965, the second 9 holes and driving range were added.  The former military golf course is now operated by a contractor group.
