The dollar a pound is perfect if you're very close to broke and need everyday clothes, or if you, say, need a lounge singer zombie costume for that very night. Trust me, I've been there, and in these cases I have not minded the musty smell and the ocd hand washing I have to do afterward. It really does have its place.

The upstairs vintage & novelty areas are especially meant for people who wear clothing of specific themes or eras as their everyday attire. Like people who make raver/goth accessories or 70's polyester shirts "their thing". Yes, I admit, I too was guilty of this as a teenager!

Which makes me wonder- I remember once really loving this place, and finding amazing crazy gems. I wonder if it's my tastes that have changed, or if the selection has become lackluster.

The sections of used contemporary clothing usually have nothing for me. The women's shirts are mostly throwaway junk, and they're there because they fit the previous owner oddly. Go ahead, try em on, you'll see what I mean. Makes me feel as though I'm trash-picking after some college aged women have a clothing swap.

They tend to have disparate sizes in jeans- a lot of 0-6, and 14-18, but not much in between.

They used to have cats, and it doesn't smell like cats anymore. I think any smells come from people not washing clothing before selling it there.

This place should serve as a petri dish for the scientists @ MIT.

Something is alive in the air, in the clothes, on the walls.  This something that's alive should probably be dead because it smells dead.  Or maybe it should be cultivated as a bio-weapon.

Came here with the rest of the crowd looking for a Halloween costume.  For the size of this place, I expected more.  The wigs and the $70 pre-packaged costumes were plentiful--but the kinds of accessories that allow an imagination to go wild?  Nada.  Vintage clothing that would inspire a unique costume idea?  Nope.  Prepare for the gross gross racks of dirty smelly stained falling-apart clothing you'll sift through only discover it was a waste of your time.  You can't get to a shower fast enough.  The Garment District is frightful.  Boo!

This place makes me nervous. Too many people. Too many odd smells (usually dust and mold.) The pay-by-the-pound pile is EXTREMELY hit-or-miss, though I did once find a red military-style jacket that was mostly intact and only needed to be taken in a bit. BUT I also had to wash it twelve or thirteen billion times to get the stench out. Seriously. I don't know what they spray the place with (cat pee?) Most vintage-y stores have a tinge of eau de "wait-what-the-hell-is-that-emanating-from-this-pi le-of-rags-omg-am-I-dying?" but Garment District must bathe in it. The racks are a little bit better, and probably offer less of a chance to contract a skin rash. Merrrr.

I'm simply not as amused by this place as I once was, but it is a proper stop for Halloween. Where else could I find a perfect Jackie O. dress and gloves for a pittance? So it's not awful. Also, they carry Manic Panic and when I was 17, that too had its charm. Do I still dye my hair Electric Lizard Green? Only in my dreams, babies. Only in my dreams.

I step into this happy hipster haven after being curious after the ads on the t-  they have quite a selection of crazy costumes for men and women.  Actually two floors of them!   They seem to have more men's costumes here than anywhere else I have been.

I'm going through, what I assume, is the used costume section on the second floor as all of the costumes are out of their bags and on hangers.  Now, my lovely sexy mafia gangster was going for $67, now I find this a little steep for a USED costume, and all it was, was a skirt and a shirt. So, I left and went to a random iparty, to find the exact same costume new for $52.  So I was right to assumed it was drastically overpriced.  Your pretty much paying to say you bought your costume at The Garment District.

But to leave this on a good note, I did find cute fun clothes around in the non costume section that were decently priced, I would probably go there when the Halloween season is over just to see what all they really have.

2 homeless men converse:

"darrel, what do you think of this sweater?"

"honestly brian, i wasn't going to say anything, but it looks really worn out to me, and pretty outdated too."

"yeah, i mean i hate letting a treasure like this go, but frankly.. it's taken on an odor."

"you should donate it to the garment district, it goes towards helping penniless cambridge kids that think they're cool. too cool, in fact, for school."

"wow, too cool for school, brian?"

"that's just what i've heard, darrel."

I love consignment!  This is not consignment.  I am not taking stars away for this, oh no, I am not.

I am taking stars away because this place gives me the heebie jeebies like no other!  I think I'm afraid of the heap of clothes that is on the floor for a dollar a pound.

Is this sanitary?  I just don't think it's a good idea to buy your clothes from a trash, er clothing heap on the floor.

Just my two cents...and for 98 more, you, yes YOU can own a pound of clothes from a floor of a really old scary store.

Not trying to be crass, just trying to be honest.

I guess I am tad bitter since I remember when this place was better. I will say this, if you have a slutty girlfriend you wanna dress in a smelly pirate hooker costume for halloween go here!! If you need to assemble a costume for cheap, or, like me, need clothes for a movie you are doing and need to do it cheaply, go elsewhere (Urban Renewals or Good Will).  if anyone who reads this is from Garment District let me just say, where you on crack when you tagged a crappy pair of used shoes at 40 bucks?
True enough they technically still have the buck a pound deal but that seems more just so they can have that namesake. Its packed in a corner now.

Most people go here to get costumes.  Don't know what that says about me - I go here to get everyday clothes.

Prices are hit/miss, and well as the selection.  When you score, it's a biggie.  And their is usually a 50% off sale going on, which is easier on the budget.

The pay by the pound section scares the living bejesus out of me.  I really don't want crawl around in a bunch of used clothes.. with complete strangers.  Pass.

It's fun for a weekend afternoon excursion.

Apparently, reviewing the Garment District is the new black on yelp, so here I am!

Do I shop here? Nah. I have bought one item ever from a consignment store and no matter how many times I wash it, it still smells musty dirty to me.

Boston Costume sort of saved my butt one Halloween ,and the costume selection is definitely decent and well organized.

I have been coming here a lot as of late, though, to sell my old clothes. They will cut you a check for 35% of the price they'll sell your unwanted crap for, and anything they don't keep goes to the dollar a pound pile. This may explain why it's gross. I have personally contributed random bras, bleach-stained hair dye t-shirts, and holey socks to this mountain of nasty.

In other news, the guy who works at the buying desk is kind of cute and said he lives in my neighborhood. Why haven't I seen him around lately?

Hipsters rejoice!

The pile of clothes on the floor have a faint smell of urine. That being said, I still dug through trying to find some vintage gems. I didn't find much. It is mostly women's clothes. For a dollar fifty a pound (1 dollar on Fridays) though, there is a deal to be had if you can find what you looking for. Just wash your hands afterward. Better yet, shower.

I am sad to give this place 2 stars, but I think it was more because it was a disappointment as opposed to simply not being that great of a place to shop for second hand clothes/costumes.

My "large pile of clothes" experience lasted about a minute, as I picked up what seemed to be cute pants. The brown/yellowish stain in the crotch made my drop it quickly and never return. So, my garment district visits now consist of me looking through over-priced costumes to get ideas for one I could piece together for half of the price. It is definitely a hit or miss, but I would say the miss is about 80% of the time.

If you're looking for a great costume place, I suggest to look elsewhere- and dig into the pile of "clothes" if you dare..

Walk right by the first floor heap of smelly cast offs and get yourself right upstairs to some good finds. I go here about six times a year and never leave empty handed. It's huge and a little bit hard to navigate at first, so give yourself some time and do not go in thinking you want a specific item. Just be open minded. That way you can pounce on something precious when you see it and grab it quickly before some cute college student runs off with it while you are just contemplating things.

Cashmere sweaters? Check. Warm winter coats? Check. Cute skirts from J. Crew, Ann Taylor and The Gap? Check. Cool clothes from every decade imaginable, perfect for your college reunion or a once in a lifetime theme party? Check BIG time.

No, not everything is in perfect shape, so look carefully. (But you do that in every thrift store, right?) And some of it will make you laugh. Remember those ill fitting pink corduroy pants with pleats that you wore to frat parties in college? They are here, just waiting for a rerun. Remember your grandmother's caftans? They are here, too! You will be transported back to her fabulous cocktail parties with cheese puffs, salami wrapped around pickles with cream cheese and your first martini.

This is a great spot to come on a rainy day. It's also a very popular destination in October as Halloween heats up. (Note that they have a fantastic section only for costumes as well.) The staff is relaxed and friendly.

I've walked out with some trendy jackets, warm, soft cashmere sweaters, belts, skirts and a coat I love. But the best? My gold sequined disco outfit that won me the first prize at a huge party. Everyone asked me where I got it. No one compared- I was in a category all by myself thanks to shopping at The Garment District.

Four stars based on wig selection alone. When you need a blue wig, you need a blue wig, and this place delivers.

I've purchased everything from Halloween costumes to vintage gloves at the Garment District and I dig what they do.  The decor is also really cool... there are the obvious large scale art installations but there are also small artistic details scattered about that make this store a really fun place to be.  The staff is really friendly and helpful despite dealing with the droves of frantic last minute Halloween shoppers and I have to give them credit.  Planning to go back here ASAP to scour the vintage racks.

[update w/o review:  the owner of Garment District wrote me and told me that they no longer have cats and have really stepped things up to be sure there's no cat box smell.  When I have a chance, I'll go back and check it out, and update this review.]

I WANT to like it.  Really, I do.  But every time I've gone (and I've tried going back again & again) it reeeeeeeekkkksss of catbox and cat urine.  It makes my noise itch and my throat gag.  I'm very sad about it because I get it and would like to support the place.  I also get it if the cats are there to control other little varmints in an old building in a natural way...  However, i can only deal with feeling like that if...  well, I just can't.

In theory, I love vintage and secondhand stores.  I am always on the look-out for unique pieces, and I like the historical element.  However, in practice, I rarely find anything that I love, and my experiences at the Garment District have been no exception.  There just seem to be too many loud, "Three's Company" style muumuus, or shirts that were blah even when they were new.  And though I am far from a germ-phobe, the piles of clothing on the floor really skeeve me out, and I tend to get overwhelmed there easily.

I'm still giving Garment District 3 stars because I'm glad it exists, and I think my lackluster experiences there may be just me, because my roommates went there last year and bought me an adorable "Mad Men" style wool sheath dress.

This is the best place ever, not so much for the clothes but for an even better reason.

The garment district is nerd girl central!  Everywhere I looked I saw cute girls with frizzy hair and glasses with a comic book drawing on her shirt.   Even the dollar a pound room had a little plump princess holding up a bra she found. It was like how I imagined an MIT sleepover would be like.

When I die I want to be stuffed and propped up against a wall here.

As far as the clothes go, I get the impression this place is hit or miss depending on the week, but for today at least I was really impressed with everything I saw.

I always said I'd stop in when I was in the area and I'm glad I didn't make a special trip. The place stinks and I don't mean only the clothes. This area of Kendall must be the collection pont for all the sewers in the area. Do yourself a favor and patronize Boomerangs in JP and WRoxb. I know for a fact that any clothing in those thrift stores winds up in the Garment District after it has been on the floor too long. And the prices at Boomerangs are better, too.

The Garment District is a fun place to shop for Halloween costumes...whether you're buying a whole outfit or just putting something together using your imagination and the vast array of vintage and random clothing strewn about The Garment District.

Ok, yes, some of the stuff smells wonky (it's used, so I guess you expect that?), but if you're just using it for a costume, it's all good. Not sure I'd actually buy something from here that I'd wear though...and if I did, I'd need to dry clean it several times before I'd want to wear it. I'd probably try another store if I were looking for vintage items that I wanted to be part of my regular wardrobe..

This place is clearly really popular, I live near here and I see a constant stream of people coming and going with their purchases in those distinctive hot pink bags. But I dunno, everytime I go in here and look for clothes, I really don't see a lot of interesting stuff. Maybe it's just the men's selection though.

Are you poor as a result of the recession? Are you fascinated by things that look like hobo explosions? Are vaguely patient and down with finding name-brand, totally wearable clothing cheap as hell with just a little bit of physical effort?

Well, friend, grab a trash bag and stake out a spot at the dollar-a-pound, because for $10 you're gonna be getting between 10 and 30 pieces of clothing.

Feelin' splurgy? Head upstairs to the vintage racks and spend a whole EIGHTEEN DOLLARS on one of their more expensive, straight-out-of-the-sixties dresses, or a girdle from back in the day when they were made right. Need an accessory with that? Behold, for thou hast cometh into the land of the colorful leggings and the tacky plastic earrings.

But in all seriousness, don't forget to take a shower once you get home.

Their costumes are overpriced and I've never bought anything from them, but the dollar-a-pound is amazing!

Try to go on Fridays if you're interested in the Pile like me, because that's when it $1 a pound and not $1.50.

If you're going to shop here you better be prepared to dig.  There is A LOT of true crap in this place haphazardly thrown on racks with only a small semblance of organization.  Horrible, horrible crap that I'd like to throw in a bonfire.  I'd say 80% of this stuff is crap.  However, if you have the time to dig for the other 20% it is worth the trip.  Among all that crap, just like any other thrift style store, there are some gems.  And those gems are very, very reasonably priced.

I am not a huge fan of Dollar-a-Pound.  Let me clarify and say that I'm not a fan of digging through piles of clothes; I'm really not patient enough.  This is not to say that Dollar-a-Pound is unamazing; quite the contrary.  It IS amazing, if it's your kind of thing.  Everyone I know has had great luck in finding gems, it's just that I haven't (because I am unlucky and lazy).

I am, however, a ginormous fan of the rest of the place.  I love how the clothes are sorted by decade/type.  There are tons of wonderful goodies to be unearthed on the racks.  Anytime I need a costume, this is the place to hit up.  It's so well organized and stocked with innumerable kitschy items.

The costume shop downstairs makes this the only place to visit when seeking costuming.  Combined with the upstairs, you WILL find something that you will want to wear.

Everyone that works there is really sweet and chill.  I get the feeling that it's a really fun place to work.

I have no qualms about spending money here.  The price seems to be consistently right!

WOW What a selection for Halloween.  Great hours.  They were open until midnight this month which is great.  The back houses a fair amount of vintage clothes while the rest was tons of Halloween stuff.  Most of this though being the cheap expensive packaged costumes from Leg Ave, etc.  I personally would rather go to a fabric store and make my own rather than pay $40+ for a flimsy costume that is way too short.  Tons of accessories.  That part reminded me of the giant big box Halloween Stores that every town has this time of year.  The clothes by the lb looked interesting.  They had a corner of the store that had a BIG pile of assorted clothes and you basically got a plastic bag when you walked in to fill up.

I went there today and it sucked. It was hot and sticky and I couldn't find a single thing that fit. I walked out of the fitting room area to check out how my shortie formal tube dress looked from other angles, if it was hot enough to make up for the the metal boning poking through and stabbing me in the chest, and when I came back the weirdly gung-ho fitting room guy had gone into my little booth and taken all my clothes back to the racks, including the clothes I wore into the store! I miss the old days when the staff were too strung out to care.

And now that half their inventory is just more brand new mass-produced crap, they can't really be lauded for their sustainability and environmental karma.

It's so hard to find a really great vintage store and TGD proves my point. The coolness factor is high. You have by the pound offering, some costume stuff right inside the door, men and women's clothes separated by eras. The thing is, I don't consider the 90's vintage. Shit, I may still have a few things in my closet from the decade. Maybe it is because the oldest employee was born in 1991 (maybe). Anyway, my real beef is with the fact that this "vintage" store had way too many new items. $30 t-shirts, $70 bowling shirts, etc...

I guess my problem is that I felt like TGD is having an identity crisis and trying to be too many things at once.

I try to avoid this place these days because I will literally lose myself in the store for hours and completely lose track of time.. I just dont have large blocks of time like that anymore. haha.
Either way, TGD is my go to place for not only every costume I have ever worn, but also for some great finds in the "pile" of 1 dollar a lb clothing dumped in the middle of the floor. I have also had tshirts made there to say funny things, or to go with costumes. The staff is usually awesome though there are a few that are a bit too cool for school....
They have an endless selection of that stuff for your costume you cant find anywhere else... accessories mostly. Glass, socks, fake jewlery, opera gloves .. I even saw real pom poms there once.
Check this place out.. but make sure you have at least an hour to spend in there....its so fun.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little terrified of the $1/pound pile on the 1st floor.  I just don't have the patience to wade through worn clothes in the hopes of finding some non-smelly, quirky treasure.  But many friends have taken the plunge and emerged with some cool items (like grandpa sweaters with embroidered mallard ducks) and at $1 per pound, you can't beat the price.

The rest of the store is easier to navigate -- I like that they organize their inventory by decade.  If you're in the market for jackets or accessories, you'll probably find something worthwhile.  I wish they had better vintage shoe offerings.  Every time I go, it seems like they skew more toward costumes than clothes you would actually wear on a daily basis.  This is disappointing.  I mean, I only get invited to so many theme parties per year, you know?

When I shop vintage, I look more for 40s and 50s stuff....Garment District caters more to the 70s, 80s, and 90s.  So if that's your bag, baby, by all means, check it out.

I love the Garment District.  Pretty decent selection of true vintage and an awesome selection of modern secondhand clothes. As a broke grad student, I appreciate their fashionable and reasonably priced "pre-owned" clothes.  There is no better place in the area to do costume shopping. Bonus points for being well-organized and having dressing rooms for you to try on stuff.

A Boston / Cambridge institution.  The Garment District has been putting vintage on the backs of the twin cities' hip for 20+ years.  They used to have more old vintage, but I guess the kids are paying for 80s so old timers like myself have to fend for ourselves.
The people who work there are cool and frequently great.  They can give you good advice about what you're trying on or looking for.
I can run in when I'm having a clothing emergency and go right back to work or I can spend a few hours.

Okay haters, the Garment District has changed from what it used to be in the halcyon days of the '90s, and Boston Costume is a huge part of that.  But let's be honest.  It was always hit or miss; it was a treasure trove or it was expensive junk, and the staff used to be a lot snobbier.  It's still a treasure trove or expensive junk depending on your luck on any given day and your willingness to put the same time and effort into looking through the racks for thrift or vintage 'finds' that you did ten or fifteen years ago.  Honestly, I prefer the Garment District itself on the few weekends a year they have a 50% off sale to clear old stock to make room for new (get on their postal mailing list for this).

But then I've always found Dollar A Pound a far more reliable (and substantially less pricey) treasure trove and that seems to have only improved with time.  In my teens I used to find at least a few good pieces each time I went that became staples in my wardrobe for years.  At the end of January 2009 I got the vast majority of my spring wardrobe, many of which I expect will become staples.  If you care about labels, my haul included J Crew, Tommy Hilfiger, Hydraulic, Takeout, and much more.  Plus a vintage clutch, Nine West handbag, and black sequined designer heels.  For under $25.  FANTASTIC.  Haters of the fact that the price of a pound has actually increased by fifty cents can go on Fridays and pretend it's 1996.  Take an allergy pill, consider latex gloves if you're easily squicked by dreck, eyeball for size and condition & don't even consider trying anything on, and dig dig dig.

This review is based SOLELY on my halloween2008 experience here. It pretty much saved my tail.

First attempt was an F for Fail. Friend and I biked all the way there in the rain to a flippin' PACKED HOUSE. my gad.. i've never seen anything like it. Racks were in shambles, boa feathers flyin', bloody masks strewn across the floor, and slut gear flying off the shelves. Claustrophobia immediately attacked and I was mentally and physically defeated within 15 minutes, leaving empty handed and sans costume.

Second attempt was on the DAY OF hallows eve celebration. I was about to default to my home remedy minniemouse, but decided to try to find SOMETHING that would make me invisible for the night. anything.
Trekked it back, prepared with push/shove/fight power. As expected, it was more bare than the previous time. I was juuuuust about to rent a grimey looking hippo get-up when I noticed a full mascot bunny costume stuffed in a bag. I asked if it was for rent? They said for sale only. PERFECT. 5 minutes and a plastic swipe later, AP and I stroll home screaming in excitement lugging bunny along. Let's just say animals ran wild that night.. and the rest is history...............

I love this place. The dollar-a-pound clothing pile is quite daunting if you don't have a strategy, but you can snag some pretty great pieces for pretty freakin cheap. They have a huge selection of clothing that's vintage (arranged by decade! How did they know I wanted 70's garb so easy to find?), and used clothing of this decade. Costumes galore and accessories all over the place. Brand new socks and tights and things of that nature which I'm not so keen on buying used. Smells a little iffy, but I'm willing to look past that and look for some quirky threads. This store goes on the list of my Boston faves for sure!

It's not a district, it's a store!    (I love saying that. I guess their heavy advertising during September and October really does work, because it's almost February and I'm still saying it. A lot.   It's not a district.)

But store, district, or otherwise, it's a little bit of a nightmare for a girl like me who isn't all that privvy to the bargain shopping, vintage finds, and not-so-organized layout.

However, I found a heck of an outfit there for Halloween, and twenty dollars went a long, long way.   And the staff love working there - it's easy to tell.    So even though I feel kind of lost within the confines of the District that is a Store, if they don't mind my quizzical, confused looks as I sort through their piles and racks of stuff that could be other stuff, I don't mind trying.

This place is sort of an iconic spot in greater boston.

Back in high school when I went to artsy progressive school, I realized wearing Abercrombie did not make me cool. No, my school was filled with Williamsburg-ers in the making. Vintage was cool and my A&F candy colored t-shirts were not. All the boarding students would make a weekend exodus from the suburbs to this place, while spending the rest of their Saturdays in the Garage in Harvard Square or at Someday in Davis.

The Garment District was where this girl realized much of her love for vintage clothing. I went there first at age 13 to buy a 50s dress for a school musical costume. In high school, my sister and I would spend a couple hours picking through the dollar-a-pound, altering our cool t-shirt finds on the sewing machine after. The employees all seemed too old and cool and disinterested- maybe that's why I'm  intimidated by the hipsters working at Beacon's Closet in Brooklyn.  I still get nostalgic and swing by when I'm visiting my parents in Boston occasionally..

I am somewhat ambivalent toward the Garment District. On one hand I have to give them props for encouraging reuse and conservation by their very nature as a (mostly) thrift store that caters to just about every kind of fashion sensibility imaginable (vintage, modern, casual, dressy, demure, or screaming-over-the-top-tacky, there is, in theory, something for everyone here). However, although I like the idea of the Garment District, the reality has never lived up to the raves that I've consistently heard about this place since I moved to the Boston area.

Here's the deal: on the main floor you'll find loads of costume supplies (full outfits, accessories, wigs, shoes, etc.). Go up one level and you're suddenly among a seemingly-endless selection of second hand clothing (modern and genuine vintage). Slightly below ground level, you'll find the famous and famously-disorganized "Dollar a Pound" section (which has actually gone up to $1.50/lb, except on Fridays). Dollar a Pound is basically a huge room with 3-5 feet of clothing covering the floor--if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can climb over the clothing hills (keeping your balance at this point will be surprisingly hard!) and dig for buried treasure.

GD gets three stars from me because, even though I've been here at least a dozen times, I have never found one thing that I thought was remotely attractive or comfortable. This may be my own bad luck at thrift stores at work (or the fact that I tend to be down for the count after twenty minutes in the Dollar a Pound sea). A further strike is that the vintage clothing on offer, sadly, is not at all attractive (lots of polyester, seventies plaid and hideous night gowns).

The Garment District is definitely worth visiting (it's pretty much a Cambridge institution), but I prefer to do my regular second-hand shopping at consignment stores where more thought has been put into selecting the clothing for sale, as I have the heart and the wallet of a thrifter, but neither the time nor the patience.

Mehhhhh maybe it's just me, but I didn't favor too much on the Garment District. While it  was some what organized, I'm that type that hates rummaging through stuff in order to find a good thing, which is why I love Urban Renewals. They have everything in it's place.

The GD OTOH is the opposite, I actually have to dig and look and scavenge for something decent to take home. The prices vary on the object in hand but are fairly priced.

While I'm sure many others were able to find a decent costume here, I sadly was not able to walk out with anything in hand.
