This is where my groceries done....partially I mean. This is the wholefoods in Greenpoint. But let me tell you.... this is the store where you can spend like either you are in Bloomingdales or bargain outlets. All depending on what you know and how to spend. Yes, sometimes I go senseless and buy everything new and gourmet, and seriously wonder what the hell I bought paying $50 for the volume of one tiny plastic bag. then realized that I have spurged myself with the organic and the earth saving products, some fancy schmancy Scharffen Berger chocolates (btw, the milk chocolate with roasted salted almond is my fav) and $2 unbelievable Evans Farmhouse yogurts.

The below is my studied list... which can be a bargain or never fail dinner list... please write down.

1. Scarpetta pasta sauce($6-7) + Putney frozen Quattro Formaggio Ravioli ($3.5-4) + chopped parsely/basil  = I have impressed and made some moan with this combo in home made dinner. it took me 10 min to cook. with the pink striped ravioli, it looks like fancy restaurant and better. Any other frozen premade pasta selection in Garden is good. another favorite is Butternut Squash & Vermont Maple Syrup Ravioli
2. Frequent sale - fruit juices & Yogi teas. The reason why I can afford 5 tea times per day. Though sometimes I wonder if I can die from tea overdose or herb tea cocktail complications. LOL
3. Cheese - pre-packed Parmigiano-Reggiano at the Deli. I love love love this cheese.. fresh, cheap as dirt ($2.5-5) in different sizes. tangy, lemony(?) and fresh fresh fresh.. I want aged cheese for other kinds but this one I want fresh! Mozarella cheese, only $5, other place I have to buy the bundle costing $8 for same amount.
4. Good roast beef sandwich at the Deli
5. Evans Farmhouse Creamery Yogurts. yes it is $2 but I want to buy the farm. this upstate NY farm produces their own milk and dairy products but not many places carry them and expensive. I bought $7 milk/quart once at the Garden but they stopped carrying the milk b/c too expensive. Anyhow, I love this yogurt, you try and don't like.. I am going to cry. It is darn rich with cream on top, FYI.
6. Coffees - the beans aren't so strong as coffee houses when you brew at home or maybe I don't know how to, but the price is usually cheap $5-7 per lbs. The french vanila Velvet is a fail proof choice. The seasonal X-mas Ginger spice ones, I am crazy about every winter.
7. Breads - my favorite is Pain au levain(sourdough) but they are so $$. $4 for a tiny bag. sigh.. Get baguettes. they are reasonably priced and good. But the bread there are quickly sold out daily so hurry.
7. Vegis - worth buying by the Ibs Muslin salad or arugula $1/bundle. Other Vegis.. go to Keyfood.

Just look for some sales.. there are always something.

Recommeded..... but mostly I need this place in my sweat pants attire trip distance.

Well, I found a substitute for Brooklyn Natural.

The produce here is EXORBITANTLY priced, $2 a piece for MEASLY avocados!

But damn, they're good.

If I'm feeling a little wealthy I'll saunter on down to fill my refrigerator with healthy delights. Salad stuffs, veggies, yoghurt, fancy cheese...and the staff is surprisingly lovely! They are very helpful in the morning when my brain seems to have left me in my sleep, looking me in the eyes and DEMANDING I inform them of whether or not I need milk, sugar, or both. I stammer "a little milk and a splenda" and they send me on my drowsy way.

I've only had some free range chicken from their meat department but I will tell you that it was probably the BEST chicken I've had out of any of the area stores. It was expensive (free range, hormone free etc) but definitely worth it.

I am SO happy The Garden is in my neighborhood.  My boyfriend has recently been into making homemade bread, so fresh yeast was in order. He and I looked, it seemed, like everywhere for the stuff and The Garden has it in 1/2 lb and 1lb blocks.

I agree with the other reviewers, their produce does leave a bit to be desired.  I mean, I like to shop at the farmer's market as much as possible, but when I need something middle of the week, the Garden will do but they don't have the best - their onions are the strongest onions ever - you have been warned.  I don't know what it is is... maybe the produce doesn't move as fast as other places, or their storage and handling aren't as good... It is still the best place in the neighborhood on non-market days - and they have fresh yeast!

The Garden is the best grocery store around the hood by far.  When I look at my debit card statement it's always funny because more than half the charges are usually for the garden.  This is kind of more sad than funny I guess,  I'm a serious loser.

Anyway, they have a lot of organic and healthy stuff, good cheese and deli stuff, and the best bread and coffee ever.  There is just something wrong with their produce.  And for a place called "The Garden" this is not good!  The bananas are all crazy and last like half a day when one half of them gets all brown and the other half is still totally unripe.  The apples are like $2 each and are gross.  I got some raspberries here and they bled weird raspberry juice all over everything in the fridge nonstop-it couldn't even be contained by a bunch of paper towels under them.  I finally just threw them away and was too afraid to ever eat them.  They were like aliens.  I don't know where their produce comes from, but it's scary.  I now buy everything else at the garden and go to C-town or Associated for the produce.  And that is not a good sign, those places suck.

They've got the of produce I don't like to buy at C-Town.  Yeah, I should go to the market, I mean, there's even one in McCarren, but it's kind of far for Saturday mornings.  I've never tasted other self churned (?) peanut butter, but that's probably the best deal I've gotten here and I like to get my grains and stuff from the bins.

Pretty pricey though.  I know I should use organic butter, but the stuff at C-Town is usually on super-sale.  And today I paid 3 dollars for a small bunch of basil.  I got a huge bunch of basil at Union Square for a buck fifty last week.  It's in season, why so pricey, The Garden? Laziness is, as always, a bank account vampire.

Also it's cramped.  Agh, more reasons to not like this place.  But the grains & the cheese counter are a major plus, so four stars, well done.

super cramped.  i mean i'm big so i'm used to feeling like Alice in most nyc stores but this place feels even more cramped than most.

aside from that it's a great store!  lots of good produce, meats, cheese, specialty coffees, prepared foods. you name it.

and if you're into female polish cashiers...they got those too.

This is a really nice little health food market in my hood.  I really wish they would expand, though.  The aisles are too narrow.  I feel sorry for the guys stocking the shelves, constantly getting bumped by the obnoxious customers.  That's another thing.  A lot of the people who shop here can be a little rude.  It's like they feel a sense of entitlement.  I understand that there are few things more important than your $4 organic bell pepper, but there's no need to be impolite when you're shopping for it.

This place offers many things otherwise unavailable in Greenpoint, but their produce is GROSS.  I got a container of "fresh" roma tomatoes a few weeks ago and brought them home only to find they were covered in green hairy mold.  I tried to take them back but I'd already thrown out the receipt and they wouldn't exchange them.

Today I bought a watermelon that was inedible.  Have you ever heard of a watermelon that wasn't at least ok?  This thing was soft and rancid and slimy and full of mushy black seeds.

Again- I appreciate their inventory and will probably continue to shop there, but don't ever buy fruit/veggies here.

You know what? I was prepared not to like this place. And then this weekend I went in and got a stuffed tote bag woth of stuff for twenty-five dollars. There's a ton of variety and the produce is far more inviting than the bleak supermarkets off the Greenpoint G stop. If you choose wisely (two dollar polenta, two fifty carton of medium-sized tomatoes rather than six dollar chunk of feta cheese) it's a pretty good market.

There are just some things that you need to get at The Garden. Fresh ground coffee, for example (great selection of beans and the aroma permeates the whole store). Peanut butter too, also ground fresh from organic peanuts.

If they ever get a butcher's stand or some real meat besides flavored chicken sausage, I'll give this place 5 stars.

A bit pricey, but overall I'm really glad to live so close to this place. Come here to scope out some hidden treasures, not to do all your grocery shopping.

I've decided that I should update my review of the Garden. Don't know why I gave it 3 stars, because it totally deserves 4.

After all, you can get a large green salad there for less then $5! And the sandwiches are mostly $4-6. So you could get a large salad and sandwich for $9-10! That's a great deal.

Plus lately I've noticed a lot more vegetarian-friendly products, like lots of fake meats and pre-made vegetarian sandwiches. Also, great coffee selection (they grind it right in front of you) and nuts they'll package right there for you as well.

I've decided that the prices are not too bad for what you are getting, and The Garden is a beautiful store with very friendly employees so you can't really do much better (in the area).

mostly overpriced, but this was my grocery store of choice in Greenpoint.
most "specialty foods" you can't find anywhere else in Greenpoint (i.e. most organic/fair trade/vegetarian/gluten free/whole grains) are here, they have some really good sales, and while I was in town they had the best prices anywhere on Yogi tea and Kombucha and Barbara's Bakery cereals. (so I like grocery shopping.) their organic produce is the cheapest in the area when the farmer's market is not around.

cons:
the coffee beans smell great, but the stuff I've tried tastes burnt. (go to Grumpy)
the baked goods look way better than they taste. sad, but true. (Peter Pan is right down the street)

I first lived in Greenpoint 11 years ago and The Garden has consistently been a great place to shop.  Sometimes the people working there are a little crappy, and I swear to god that they employ people full time just to clog the freezer aisle with endless restocking, but all in all The Garden is a vital part of what makes living in Greenpoint so nice.  Best selection around for organic/veggie/free range/gluten-free/bulk/whatever-your-bag-is food.

A quaint neighborhood establishment, The Garden is the best place to shop for organic and generally healthy groceries.  It is, however, a labrinyth of narrow aisles and there are often long lines at the registers. No, the cashiers don't smile, but neither did I when I had their job at 17. And one time, I did have a pointless back-and-forth with the produce guy as he stocked bags of spinach that were already past their expiration date. I don't think he understood me and I really didn't get him. Prices are decent for organic products, but I would buy your paper goods elsewhere, as no one deserves to get ripped off over toilet paper.

Suggestion sidenote: Woodstock brand organic creamy peanut butter

This place is great! Mixture of organic and nonorganic foods, a bulk section for your dried nut and fruit needs, plenty of veggie stuff, the expected Perogies you find in any shop in Little Warszaw, awesome selection of chocolate.  I can go here and buy my groceries for the same price as other small markets, but then wouldnt be getting half my produce organic, and it would be half wilted at the others too.  I will only shop here now.

Give me a 'G', Give me an 'A', Give me an 'R', Give me a 'D', Give me an 'E', Give me an 'N'! What does that spell GARDEN!!!! I am their biggest cheerleader! I couldn't be happier with a grocery store/health food store/gourmet store all rolled into one cute little neighborhood spot!

Their selection of produce is wonderful, their bakery has a wide array of delicious choices (try the tangy sourdough, yum!), their frozen food section is tiny (as it should be) but has great organic options and the oh so amazing Organic Ben & Jerry's Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. They have everything you need but instead of bombarding you with 30 choices they give you a few and leave it at that, making the shopping experience much much easier and relaxing.

Their prepared foods are delicious, a great place to stop by and pick up some party goods or a quick lunch. Their sandwiches are handmade in the back to your liking, fresh as can be. Their cheese selection is amazing. They carry organic and free range chicken, grass fed beef and milk products, what more can a girl ask for. I no longer have to lug my meat and dairy products from Whole Foods back to Greenpoint!

Their prices in my opinion are fair and reasonable, I understand the claim that their prices are high, but I've rationalized it against the quality and freshness they serve. Well worth every dollar. Support the hood'!

The Garden is a refreshing complement to the fresh produce stands in the intersection of Greenpoint Ave. and Manhattan Ave. Like any organic food store, the prices will be somewhat expensive. However, for many things--particularly dry, non-perishable items, the Garden is pretty reasonable. I shop for my produce at the nearby stands, however, because the price is right. The Garden also has a unique, Polish-inflected deli--with a diverse selection of meats, cheeses, and pre-made items. The sandwiches they make to order are very good and very cheap.

Coming from a huge coffee snob--I've worked at both esteemed coffee houses in SF and BK--some of their whole bean coffee is actually NOT THAT BAD. Particularly, the Sumatra Mandhelin, which I french press every morning.

Although I have yet to try an item from their bakery, everything looks really amazing.

I love the Garden. In fact, I actually do a lot of my big grocery shopping runs there because they do have everything you need.  Their produce selection is great and yes, it may be a bit more expensive but we should all try to support local and organic, I don't want my apple or tomato to be flown from thousands of miles away.
They have a great meats selection as well as a variety of cheeses and you could make a great little dinner out of a loaf of bread, some cured meats, olives, fruit and cheeses...sounds good to me.
Oh yeah, and like a lot of other posters have mentioned, their coffee selection is amazing!!! I'm going out to buy a new french press this afternoon and can't wait to pick up some whole beans at The Garden!

My sister lives a stone's throw away and even though I only visited for a weekend, I love this place.  It is a small, quaint grocery but I think I found mostly everything I would want.  I couldn't get over the fresh produce (organic!), good meat selection, lots of organic snacks and other various foods.  On top of that the barista is great.  Shop, buy some fresh-baked bread, order a coffee, and buy it all at the register!  Definitely a one-stop shop

This place is great. Prices are totally reasonable compared to the local organic-ish bodegas. Except produce is better priced and better quality at the McCarren Park farmers' market, but that's true of most places in the 'hood. They do have sales on certain items every once in a while, so it can make sense to shop frequently. I live near the Nassau train, but it's worth it for me to make the trek sometimes, get a little exercise and get some great food at decent prices. It's not as cheap as Trader Joe's, but Trader Joes has massive 45-minute lines and I STILL have to carry my groceries at least 10 minutes anyway. I wish their website had information on the sale items... Then I'd know when it'd be really worth my journey. Ooooh, I can only imagine if they delivered.

The Garden is where I buy the majority of my groceries, and for someone who is as picky as I am about how my ingredients taste and function in my dishes, and also where they come from and how grown, this place is an essential weekly stop for me. That said, it could be better.

As with any omnivore's dilemma, you will want to do some research while buying your food here: a quick read over the labels and tags will tell you where most of the produce comes from (in the case of apples, it's New York State or Chile). On other items, it's not as easy to tell. The Garden is no greenmarket, where fresh, local and in-season are a given; still, the produce is always of superior quality, even if it's Arizona sand you'll be washing off your greens all winter.

The produce section is coupled with a selection of dry goods, deli, dairy and eggs exceedingly well targeted to the urban yuppie conscious of health and agricultural sustainability, rivaled only by Whole Foods in the city, and at comparable prices. Beyond that, The Garden is simply too small to accommodate tastes for the cheap-o, traditional, big-market items; thus, a roll of paper towels here goes for $2.39, and I'm left to split up my shopping between here and a traditional grocery (or, alternatively, ponder how my forebears did without such luxuries!). If you can stomach a good dose of price equity, however, there's good karma to be got here. That said, we don't all work at an i-bank.

A friendly, courteous, and somewhat large staff of locals make shopping here very pleasant indeed. Show up early if you're looking for baked goods.

Well, I remember my relief when this store first open in Greenpoint, finally a better grocery store where I could be understood in English. The store has a nice selection of produces, cheese, dairy and products that are not readily available in other part of the area. The baked goods are also very nice, and I have been in that store at least once a week since it first opened. My only complaint today, is that it gets a bit crowded and cramped, and the cashier could smile a bit more, but then again they work hard. If I am in a hurry to find an item that might be a bit unusual, it is a sure bet that the Garden will stock it. The prices are a bit on the higher end, but it  is still cheaper than going to Manhattan to find the same merchandise.

The Garden is a decent place to pick up hippie-type food, i.e. fake meats, organics, fair trade, health-conscious stuff. Not a great place to go on your major grocery shopping trips, as the selection is somewhat limited, but it's good for picking up health food items that you might not be able to find elsewhere in Greenpoint like organic cheeses and flavored tofus.

For a coffee lover who has been reveling in his new coffee grinder this place is a godsend, and add to that a generous dosage of health-consciousness, this place is frequently frequented. It's also one of the few places I've found since moving to the neighborhood last month which offers bulk, like granola, nuts, those kinds of things. I don't know why, but I really like scooping things into bags, and you get to some of that here, so bully for them!

the only place (that i know of) to pick up filo dough in the neighborhood. they have really good bulgur wheat, and they sell day old breads (the fancy stuff) for a rather cheap price in a basket near the cashiers. fruits and vegetables are much cheaper in poland farm, which is 2 blocks north. but for anything else, the garden in my opinion can be highly recommended. also it's really clean and well kept.
