Simply this. You can say what you want, but as someone born and raised in this city...the Gallery was "IT" back in the day. As with anything, in time, it will no longer be popular, or clean, or fancy. Get over it and deal, the Gallery will soon prob cease to exist. There will be people who remember it in its glory, and those who don't...and that's ok.
Picture this...beat boxers, b boys, gold chains, and the tons of stores to cop more, and the Woolworth's counter across the street. Yeah ya'll don't know about that. Give it a rest.
Oh, The Gallery. Let me just say 95% of the time I go in there, I just look around and ask myself, "why?". But to be fair, it's like that for most of Philadelphia as well.
Alright. Yes. The Gallery is pretty ghetto. And yes, it does have a weird odor. But this mall isn't by far the WORST ever. I'm glad there's a K-Mart there since stores like that (K-Mart, Target, Wal-Mart, etc) mainly seem to be in South Philly and if I don't want to catch the bus, I can just walk to The Gallery.
I do think it's neat that it's connected to the train station. It's also probably a large contributor for the ghetto folk. But stupidity is everywhere folks.
That being said...do I like to shop at The Gallery? Not really. I prefer to go to the cheap stores on Chestnut. Those can be pretty ghetto too but just take everything with a grain of salt. Like another reviewer said, I'm at these places to shop, not to give a damn about how other customers are acting. I just prefer the clothing selection of the stores on Chestnut (Moda, Eternity Fashion - it's all the same thing). I enjoy those stores because they are actually catered to a wide variety of sizes. And they are really cheap.
Also, The Gallery closes ridiculously early.
I'm still torn on if it would be beneficial for The Gallery to get removed and become a casino or not. But meh, that's a whole 'nother can of worms...
Ah, the best part was probably the KMart here, followed closely by the strawberry pie place down in the basement.
It's a bit older, and a bit "ghetto" as people say, but it is the local center city mall, and you have plenty of transportation options (trains, buses, green and blue subway lines are all located here in the basement, and a lot of people come in and out).
They do have a fun Christmas show year-to-year, though.
Visiting from NYC for the weekend, me, bf & best friend stopped in.
This place can suck a duck's ass for closing early on Sundays!
One good thing about THAT was that we got to explore Chinatown. :)
OK, if you're one of those people that likes being a witness to ghetto fights, attitudes, possible beatings or robberies, than come here for your life threatening fun.
Coming here to get to the regional rail sucks as it is. Why would you care to hang around some place where public urination runs rampant?
Gross.
Side note : Tiffany's bakery makes some of the best Rugalah in the city. Just sayin is all.
This place reeks of urban deterioration (mental, physical, emotional) and shady characters, but not the worst place to kill time while waiting for the next SEPTA train. Enough chain stores to amuse me, and the hodgepodgy five-dollar-store on the 2nd floor scores a few pts in my book (bc I'm a rummage-rat).
That said, things that happened while I was at The Gallery for all of an hour:
1. Salesclerk refused to help me find something in a store and muttered "Be with you in a minute" as he walked away and never came back.
2. Woman with a brood of 5? (6? i lost count) yelled at her childspawn in the ladies room trying to get them to wash up and go. I considered telling her to STFU, but feared she might smack me down too.
3. A homeless crazy man nearly knocked me over as he hurtled (best word possible) down the main strip, screaming hoarsely, "EXCUSE ME!" Wafting stink trailed in his wake. P-U.
Welcome to the city, folks.
The stores. A-OK. Location. Cool. Public urination. Check.
Essentially it's a train station first, mall second. In all seriousness, it's not quite as bad as it sounds. The stores are pretty typical and there are some decent eats in the food court. During my long waits in between Amtrak transfers I found this place convenient and time consuming enough to chill while killing five hours. While I wouldn't expect awesome customer service or a Tiffany's on the ground, there's enough of your usual mall fair to amuse most people if you can get over the urban setting. Decent on its own but not really worth a stop if you're not in the area.
Strangely enough, I find that while this type of thing is so common back in the big apple where no one really gives a damn, many of the PA/Philly locals I've met were totally horrified. I absolutely hate to give into the popular New Yorker stereotype, but really, the Gallery's not all that horrific or dangerous: of the dozens of times I've popped in I've never been harassed, assaulted or personally bothered by anyone. If peeps are looking to go ghettotastic in front of Kmart I really could care less: I'm there to shop. Sure you come out smelling like a public urinal but hey, when you need those head phones for your iPod, you need 'em.
If some out-of-towner who's never been to our fair city gripes about it being dirty, or dangerous, or any of that oher crap that can go part and parcel with most any frickin' big city on the planet, then be sure to tell them that they are, in fact, correct, and take them straight to The Gallery as soon as their precious safe and clean feet step on the Philly asphalt.
I probably don't NEED to reiterate what so many have said here, but hell, it's fun, and I want to offer my take. This is about as bad as downtown Philly gets, which to me is actually saying quite a lot. As soon as you step foot into The Gallery, you instantly feel like you need a shower. It just has that imposing grimy feel to it that you can't quite place, but you know if you held one of those groovy UV lights up in it when it was all dark, you'd see the most disgusting proof of humanity's existence splashed all over everything.
Sure, there are stores like Old Navy, Burlington Coat Factory, and Kmart (see accompanying review for that turd as well), but you don't really want to go into any of them at The Gallery. All the versions of those stores at this weirdo excuse for a mall (really it seems more like the reality of some lousy urban planner's lunch that he vomited up one day) came straight from Hell. If you've ever seen the movie Jacob's Ladder, you'll instantly know what I mean. This place is just skeevy beyond belief.
Of course, seeing the big mural thingy smack dab in the middle featuring Bill Cosby's likeness is well worth the free admission. Hell, if you're going to go see the Rocky statue, you may as well see the painting of Bill at The Gallery! He looks down at you and smirks, knowing that you are wading through a cesspool of the lowest common denominator of mass consumerism.
The only reason I'm usually at this place is because one of the trains I take plops me off at Market East Station, which is featured in the very bowels of The Gallery. But it's actually the nicest thing there, because you know you'll be getting away from there soon when heading outbound. There's a terrible excuse for a food court down there as well, featuring such craptastic selections as Subway and Popeye's and some weird-ass Asian joints serving up smoothies and chicken wings galore. What is it with the Chinese places and chicken wings in this city? Someone needs to look that up.
So just remember, take all your pals to The Gallery to scare the hell out of them and make their big city fears come true. Then escape to street level and show them all the truly great stuff there is in Philly. Although, you might not make it out of The Gallery alive yourself if you don't wear some sort of Haz-Mat suit.
HAHAHAHA these reviews are hilarious, why not add my shitstained 1-star review for a shitstained 0-star shopping mall. You guys might get a laugh from this, but please don't get offended.
As many have said, the Gallery was at one time, a decent place, I have a very vivid childhood memory of walking through the saturated yellow light near the food court with my grandmother and picking out a toy at Kay Bee before hopping a train to Hatboro. Now, I wouldn't dare bring my grandma (God rest her soul) without a flak jacket and pepper spray. So here is my comical review of the Gallery...and since we are on the topic of God, I'll write this in biblical format for your enjoyment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Gallery 20:08 -
Yay tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of death (East Market St.), I shall fear no evil from the homeless guy who uses a wheelchair but appears to be fully capable of walking, or the scary crossdressing crackhead with way too much lipstick on. I shall fear no evil because I haven't even gotten inside of the Gallery yet. And my eyes looked toward the heavens at the Gallery sign outside of the building, and I wondered, why isn't there a sign below that says "Abandon all hope, ye who enter"?
And lo, as I walked through the unsanitary doors, I thought I might have gotten actual human feces on my hands, and the pungent smells seemed to confirm my fears. And it was bad. And the Lord looked down from the heavens and had Himself a hearty laugh.
And as I walked past the Old Navy, I wondered to myself if I was in fashion hell, as surely only Old Navy could still exist in hell where it be featured so prominently. And after almost being trampled by indignant, loud-mouthed ghetto youf, who made a conscious effort not only to not get out of my way when walking, but to actually stand in my way at all times, I realized that this was no ordinary mall, it was the result of years of ignorant rulers (especially King John Street) who would pay little mind to the toils of the simple-minded employees and patrons that populated the Gallery, who wouldn't give a shit if all went the way of Sodom and Gomorrah...and it did. And it sucked.
And yay, as I rode the escalator down to the lower levels, I looked at the ridiculous collage of so-called Philly icons, a nightmarish caricature of Bill Cosby, a retard struggling with a demonic pretzel, a singer with HUGE boobs belting out a hellish chorus. And I was displeased at the way this made Philly's good side feel tainted in the midst of these unpleasant surroundings.
And when I got to the bottom, I spotted a few stores that looked halfway decent, including a Gamestop, the only videogame store around, and I proclaimed, "Hark! Fucking sweet, a videogame store!" with much gusto. But the videogame store was overrun by the armies of inconsiderate schoolchildren playing hookie, and so I decided to explore the food court.
And lo, as I made my way to the food court, I heard to my back "GET THE F*CK OUTTA MY WAY YOU WHITE MOTHERF*CKER" and I turned around and beheld a mean old man with a cane who followed up with "YEAH THAT'S WHAT I SAID!" (true story, I'm not making this up). And the security guards just sat there, idle in their stoned-out haze, oblivious to my discomfort. And I proclaimed "Good God, what in the hell is going on here? Is this a real place?"
And I noticed that rather than waste my time and money (and potentially, my safety) toiling with these tortured souls, I could have gone elsewhere, where there still lives a shred of Philadelphia's once charming majesty. One thing is for sure-- the Gallery ain't no Garden of Eden, it's an absolute shithole and it needs to be swallowed by the earth in an act of God.
I have thought long and hard about the potential Foxwoods Casino slated to be build on top of the Gallery. I have found that I am totally ambivalent to the project, which says a lot.
Even though I hate casinos and I think it will cause even more traffic, I don't think the mall could get any worse. Seriously.
Ah the Gallery. Along with 69th Street Station, this is one of the worst places I have ever been… Read more »
Back in the good old days I would take the train to the Gallery right from school and it was cool. Now, not so much. It stinks really bad. The Gallery is home to many stores I would normally shop at but its just not worth it. I'd rather drive a distance to another mall. I havent been here in a very long time and don't plan on going back.
This place is at the corner of Dope Street and Fly Avenue. Bought a nice pair of Air Max here back in the spring of 2004, got to talking with the clerk and he verified my Mass license, and he says "we gon vote for your boy Kerry man, this is a demo town!!"
Do you get that kind of interaction at a Foot Locker? I think not.
I can imagine that the folks growing up in Philadelphia think back fondly on their days hanging out here in high school. Wonder how many first kisses have taken place here?
Would love to give NO STARS.
EEEEKK. I just heard on the news today that one of the casinos is considering the floors above the Gallery as a potential site for a casino. WTF??!!! Have they actually visited it, or is someone from the city selling them a bill of goods??
AND (in the news today), an 80 year old man was ambushed/beaten in one of the men's rooms? There is something seriously wrong with this place. Stay away, stay away, stay away!
I'll try to give an objective review. Firstly, the store variety. Um, what? I don't know, I could not tell if they had even one store selling clothes for my age set that was not for hookers. They had some other stores for old ladies or whatever but seriously? This is in the middle of Market East! You would think they'd have a store line up like Walnut St. near Rittenhouse...
I found a Suncoast here and a Kmart. I can't imagine why they have so many floors when all the stores can be adequately condensed into less than half a floor. It's like they purposely want to waste space. Is the macy's even there anymore??
I think they had a few CD and shoe shops but absolutely no variety in the fashion. It was either ghetto, or, more ghetto. Sorry if this offends anyone.
Also there always seems to be rude or creepy people there. One time a creepy old guy came up to me, I think/know for sure he was a homeless dude and he started talking to me and I just tried to walk away (I was just passing through here on the way to Market East Station..). He started following me and then asking me if I wanted to smoke pot with him. No, I don't, because either way I don't do pot. Oh, neither do I, he says.
RIGHT!..
*mad dash for subway turnstile*..
They could do so much better and make this into a premier shopping destination. I don't know why they prefer to let it sit around. Does this place even turn a profit??
This place is what it is. I don't understand how people don't expect putting a mall in the middle of Center City Philadelphia won't end up in a disaster.
But some highlights:
Gamestop: Lots of geeks and helpful staff. I've had kids recommend a game in pretty much every system. It gets crowded in there but if you are shopping for video games in the first place then I'm assuming you have some time on your hands.
Asian smoothie place in the foodcourt: I forget what it's called but they sell really good and fresh smoothies for cheap. Plus they are the nicest people and I like to tip them generously.
Kicks USA: This is my favorite place to visit in the Gallery. It's bright as fuck in there but the sneaker selection is pretty good (for a sneaker store in a mall) and their fitteds are what's up. If you wait a few weeks, the $85 dunks you wanted are gonna be on sale for $60. They are good like that.
That's about all the highlights I can muster. This is place is gross otherwise. Their woman's bathroom smells like period all the time, they have rats in their foodcourt (couldn't make this up if I tried), and most of their stores are so unkempt that you are better off digging through a trash dumpster.
Man, back in the day, I was ALWAYS at the Gallery. My friends/sister would always flirt with the guys here. I would always buy rap/r&b singles at Sam Goody, buy Nautica/Tommy Hilfiger/Ralph Lauren/DKNY at Strawbridges, chill by the fountain. I DON'T miss being a young ghetto teen. The Gallery hasn't changed... AT ALL. Some stores closed and became other stores, but THAT'S IT. It's still the same crowd, the same dingy-ness for the past 15 years.
There are lots of cheap clothing stores for girls, shoe stores, and video game stores (great for when you're looking for a game that sells out quickly, as was the case for Nintendogs.. go ahead, laugh!) I love the Food Court. I can't help but love the Gallery. I don't go there as much as I used to, but it holds a special place in my heart (awwwww).
I can't believe how bad the Gallery is now. When I was a kid, I remember this place being my second favorite place to go, right after Kiddie City. When I got back to Philly as an adult, I was at least expecting a decent environment for my family.
Where does one begin? Between the packs of useless teenagers, the "leering squad" that turn their chairs outward in the food court so they face the passing ass, the spacey security guards that checked out a long time ago, the stores that offers less substance and even less dignity, and the regional rail riders that always have that "please don't notice me" look on their face, this place is just depressing.
The Gallery is quite a reflection on the current status of America: dirty, half-assed, dysfunctional and quite unattractive under the layers of false prestige.
It's the hood of all malls. There is nothing here to speak of. on a very rare occaision i will go to the Old Navy (which is nearly always picked over and dis-shelveled.) I also once dained to get my nails done at the Korean-run nails salon on the lower level. NEVER AGAIN.
This is a really low-end mall - which is a shame because when it was built it was a shining star and an attraction for Philadelphia.
Oh come on. The Gallery isn't /that/ bad.
I don't love the stores inside of it, but sometimes you need to hit up Old Navy for khakis on the cheap. Yes, it is overrun with teens, but I've never had a bad experience...maybe it's because I just mind my own business and understand that they're bored teenagers doing what bored teenagers do: hang out at the mall. I've grabbed Chik Fil A and studied French in the food court and never run into any drama.
The various Gallery employees I've interacted with have been way nicer and more polite than many of the employees I've dealt with in hipper stores, so I have no real complaints. Also, the fact that Market East is right in the middle of the mall is such a huge perk, making it super easy for me to get there from Temple or work.
If it didn't suck so bad it would be great!!
If you need sneakers or sports jerseys go here...anything else stay far far away
What can I say?! It's the place we all love to hate. The place where everyone in the city shops because there simply is nowhere else in the city to shop (believe me they wouldn't come here if it wasn't absolutely necessary)!
And now they're getting a casino (possibly)! So now it can be a mall with truant problems, homeless problems, people trying to start fights AND gambling addiction! It doesn't get any better than that folks!
And to think the gallery was once proposed as the city's way of trying to improve the area! Pft! Someone lied through their teeth about that one!
Market Street and Chestnut Street in the area of The Gallery has the potential to be a really great shopping district. It could potentially be a supplement to the old city restaurant, nightlife and tourist scene and a complement to the Rittenhouse Square shopping district if all of the ghetto boutiques were driven out and more designer and upscale stores were attracted to the area. The area has some great potential but that potential hasn't been realized.
Ghetto boutique = neon lights in windows, loud rap music blaring outside and cheap gold jewelry aplenty (note that gold jewelry could be inside the store or could possibly be sold by a peddler on the sidewalk in front of the store. The jewelry seems to have no boundaries. It must be contained!)
This is one of those places where, when you walk out, you just pray that your friends don't see you… Read more »
When Ed Bacon came down from upon high at Fairmount Park, he brought with him a two stone tablets containing the plans for The Gallery, a suburban shopping mall that would completely cut off Market East from the surrounding neighborhoods, would feature Foot Locker after Foot Locker after Foot Locker and would eventually be anchored by such great shops as K-Mart, Pay/Half, HealthPartners and an office building. In addition, movie posters from such films as "The Contender" would remain on the wall for years, delighting those cool enough to venture into the Gallery's upper floors. There would also be a women's gym of some sort in Gallery II, but those upper floors would remain ghost towns.
It took a while to get Edmund Bacon his dream, but it appears we have finally honored his life by doing so.
I swear their food court is the mecca for Philly's finest parolee's and other sketchy figures.
This mall is GHETTO. That's right...ALL CAPS GHETTO.
Do yourself a favor and at least head up to KoP mall or hell even the Liberty Shops, at least you won't risk getting beat up or shot. Hell, I'd rather go to Wal-Mart in South Philly. It's an embarrassment for the city being close to the convention center, reading terminal, and all the historical sites.
Where shopping goes to die.
The Gallery is the most conveniently located mall to public transportation in the Philadelphia area.
Places like the Gap, New York & Co, Lane Bryant, SunCoast, Old Navy, Claires etc etc, are the same as any mall anywhere. The stores are all clean...the worst part is the food court's never bussed. But there are a hell of a lot of restaurants in there--and only TWO fried chicken places. Yes it has a Kmart, god for-fuckn-bid someone be able to by their stuff cheap.
But omg there's black people and working class people shopping there so it MUST be ghetto.. Ghetto being the hip liberal code word for "black".
One bonus though is the fact that the piped in mall music often plays new wave classics. I lol everytime I hear erasure.
Oh man oh man. The Gallery. I have a love/hate relationship with the Gallery. I live really close by and I don't have a car, so I find myself for the first time in my life, relying on a shitty K-Mart for a lot of houseware shopping. The K-mart, Burlington Coat Factory or Old Navy may not meet any of my wardrobe expectations, but I found a Hannah Montana iPod dock SLASH guitar amp there and I can safely say it was the only practice amp I could find on Market Street! (Don't worry, I took it back and went to an actual music store.) I can't really say that the stores are terrible... they just cater to a different demographic. (I grew up in southern California in between Fashion Island and South Coast Plaza, two very upscale malls. Theres nothing I want to buy in them either. In fact, when I walk through South Coast Plaza it elicits a very rare urge within me to go all Adbusters-Culure-Jam and destroy everything)
It seems pretty racist, however, for a white kid like me to label it 'ghetto'. It's a transient salt-of-the-earth crowd, sure, but theres a Chick-fil-A and a greasy Chinese joint in the food court, and that makes me happy. Sure I could walk 3 blocks in the other direction from my door and eat Chick-fil-A and literally the exact same shitty Chinese at Liberty Place, but whats the fun in that? Not like the Shops at Liberty Place have much to brag about. Godiva and Express are shitty chain stores too. But I digress...
I rarely ever utilize the train station component of this urban planning skylark but I often find myself walking through the Gallery when its not so nice outside to get from 12th to 9th Sts. The design of this mall might have looked neat on the drafting table, but it is an absolute disaster. As a relative newcomer to this town, it seems like there was a big push to clean up the city for the bicentennial and then, 33 years later, people are trying to clean it up to finish what they started. It feels pretty disingenuous. But that is why we are left with such gems as the Ben Franklin museum in Franklin Court. I like walking up on the deserted upper levels. There is this video game place up in the eastern corner, it seems like they exist in a weird nether world, unless you know about that place there is literally no reason, aside from mall exploration, to get up into that corner of the mall. Surely people must know about it because it is still in business.
The Gallery is a depressing and soulless place, like most malls, but that is part of the charm. The people watching is kind of fun too. I really want to catch happy hour at that mall bar. Talk about soul crushing! I can't imagine the exponential rise in suck that would rain down on this place if they opened a casino.
I am actually pretty surprised at the lack of big name luxury malls in Philadelphia. Maybe its just a west coast thing. When I need something that would be very easy to acquire out in the strip mall laden suburbs, I am forced to go to the Gallery to be invariably let down. Tired of feeling great? Take a soul-numbing stroll through the stinky corridors of the Gallery and revel in the stupid shit companies want low-income people to waste money on. And stop by the Cinnabon on your way out.
Attention riders...located right in the heart of center city...to our (left/right) is....(long dramatic pause) The Ghetto mall.
Here you can find...such places as Kmart, Express, Burlington Coat Factory, Dollar Store, Cheap Dollar Store, Perfume Kiosk, Cracked out Santa/Bunny/other fairy tale character of the season, bums, garbage, strange odors, a gross food court, Modell's, Borders Express(where loitering to read is unacceptable), and more kiosks and trash than can be thought up.
I despise this place...before Macy's closed down the best Strawbridges in the world I could tolerate it...but now...there is no hope for (dun dun dunhhhhh) the Ghetto Mall.
--FIN--
The Gallery is a funny place. It's bizarro mall that doesn't have the store you know, it has a store that is the other-world equivalent of it. So, instead of Gap, it has Net. All of these stores are technically boutique stores in that they are the only location of this store but are in mall-store clothing. Weird...
It also has a EB Games and a Gamestop, which are the same company and, yet, not viewed as redundant.
What I dislike about this place is that it closes at 7 on Saturday. I know that this is to keep the roaming gangs of kids from gaining too much momentum and causing all kinds of trouble but, still, 7? Really?
I guess it says what kind of place when it's cornerstone stores are Kmart, Burlington Coat Factory, and Old Navy.
A place that I only set foot in when my Septa train is running late enough to the point where I don't have anything better to do. and I really end up loathing every moment of it. the people watching isn't even any fun. the majority of the people inside it either don't know any better, or are kids who should probably be in school somewhere.
If you can muster up enough patience to go in for an extended amount of time, you might be able to find the occasional good deal. but you can probably get the same stuff at a better price somewhere else anyway. so even that isn't worth it.
This place is a dump.....they need to change it to a casino..fo' real!! Most of the good retailers are either out of business or just plain gone! And what's up with all these teenagers hanging out that should be in school???
Okay okay everyone, let's stop hating on The Gallery and search for the good we know must be there.
First, there is an Old Navy and a Cinnabon. Now why would you need to go anywhere else? Second, the el even wants you to go there--it makes a special stop for it. Finally, it's easy to leave and get on with your life. Just wipe the frosting off your face and head out to face the loveliness that is Market Street (but that's another post).
I had a dream I went to hell and I was stuck in the gallery, in the middle of a gang of teenagers looking for their babies daddy. Oh auntie em help me!
Yeah this place is ghetto....real ghetto not fun ghetto...It is not fun to shop. I got grabbed by a drunk homeless person but that is not even scary though. I dont like the shops either. I just went in to get out of the damn rain. The gallery is not well set up either. I just found myself wanting to get out of here quick. The crowds suck....like rude ass people.
The gallery sucks!!! Forget the stores..........lets mention the dirty food court, homeless people harrassing customers and at times getting violent (I've witnessed it 1st hand), and the security rent a cops that let this happen. The stores are outdated, except for NY&CO and Old Navy. Kmart sells expensive crap!!!
Tear it down and put up the casinos!! At least it will keep the violent homeless out of there!!! This place is a waste.
i grew up in the shopping mall mecca of bergen county, nj so i'm accustomed to gigantic shopping extravaganza places bigger than king of prussia, spotlessly clean, bright and airy with the faint aroma of cinnabon.
the gallery also has a cinnabon. for some reason you can't smell it.
the gallery has the most retarded layout i've ever seen. the highlights of this place, for me, are the train station to take me home and the very large well-stocked five below for last minute cheap purchases.
i did buy a laser pointer in the radio shack once for a kitten toy, and the clerk in there was very friendly and helpful.
the best thing that could happen to the gallery would be a giant wrecking ball. wipe the slate clean and start over. the convention center will never, ever thrive without better restaurant and retail in this location.
The Gallery is to mall what the Dollar Store is to shopping.
This place, although large, houses only the cheapest of businesses.
Expect G&G, Claire's, K-Mart and other smaller companies that make money off of their extra-large jeans with the image of Scarface airbrushed to the leg.
Don't expect anything offered of nutritional value either.
As a business, if making it to KOP means your netting in the black, then making at The Gallery means you at least have a business logo.
What can I say that hasn't already been said? This is the worst mall I think I've been to. No good stores really (I mean...one of their big anchor stores is K-Mart. Seriously?), too many annoying kids/creepers, and most of it is vacant anyway. In summation: big waste of space. The ONLY reason I'd ever go to the Gallery is for Charley's Grilled Subs in the food court. That's it.
Let me tell you why I actually LIKE The Gallery.
I work in Center City. I have no car. I can't shop in Size Two Pants That Cost $200. Convenient to me is a mall that houses a couple of shopping staples: New York and Company and Old Navy.
Given its size and location, the Gallery could no doubt be much more than it is. There are a lot of junk stores and dirty bathrooms, but at least the religious fundamentalists keep their shouting outside of the building, and if you're in search of a quality bite to eat, Reading Terminal is right around the corner.
This mall is an embarrassment to one of the most highly trafficked areas of the city. It's a shame that the Gallery lies right in the middle of some of the city's most visited areas (Independence area, Reading Terminal/Convention Center, City Hall/Love Statue, Rittenhouse area). I will occasionally walk through here on a cold day to get over to Reading Terminal and have to do so watching my back and my pockets.
Complete and utter dump. I would never go anywhere near this hole if it weren't for the Market East station, and I suspect many other people wouldn't either (well, except for all the bums/losers who have nothing else to do). Avoid!
