This is why I love Yelp! Heading into a spur-of-the-moment "let's go wine tasting" weekend, I knew I'd need some good, solid food in my stomach but had no idea about where to go. Thanks to Yelp, we found The Fremont--a little slice of Americana in the wine country that would make any breakfast-lover happy.
The place is adorable, like a country store with a short menu of breakfast items like ham on biscuits, biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, and pancakes. You order at the counter, find yourself a seat, then wait for them to call out that your order's ready.
Since the weather was perfect for a fall day in wine country, we chose to sit at one of the picnic tables outside in the sun. The views of the surrounding hills and vineyards were postcard-perfect. And before long we had our French-press coffee pot in front of us, plus his black-pepper corned beef hash and my sweet cream biscuits with gravy. The hash was outstanding, with chunks of onions and potatoes mixed with the well-seasoned beef and nicely caramelized. My breakfast, ordered with a side of scrambled egg, was also delicious. Biscuits with gravy is one of my favorite breakfasts, and this version was really good. The creamy gravy had picked up a bit of coloring from the browned sausage chunks and had a bit of sweetness to it. But the biscuits were amazing and so different from any I'd had before. I suspect they may drop biscuit batter into an oiled cast iron mold to bake, because these biscuits had an addicting crunchy-fried crust on the bottom. Or it could be that they were baked then griddled.
What makes me think this? Well ... we loved The Fremont so much that we stopped back the next morning on the way to Napa. This time I went for a lighter breakfast of fresh-squeezed orange juice and one of the fresh-baked muffins displayed on the counter. When I placed my order, I was asked if I wanted it griddled. A quick yes and short wait later, my zucchini muffin arrived split in half with that same toasty crust I'd loved on the biscuits.
Any time I'm in wine country again, The Fremont will definitely be my first stop.
Wow! I'm a tough reviewer and I do not give out 5 stars liberally.
This diner serves the most delicious food I've had in weeks.
Super moist and flavorful pulled pork sandwich on a grilled Alexis Baking Company potato bun, topped with coleslaw, served with a side of perfect onion rings. Holy S**t! I think I was transported to American Food Heaven there for a while.
Bambie's apple beet salad was great, too.
On the way out I watched a family of six order a bunch of other items, and I nearly went insane. I seriously wanted to go back inside and order everything else on the menu just to satisfy my greed, even though I was fully satisfied by my generous lunch portion.
Funky, cute dining room. several outdoor picnic tables. Bring the family dog, he's welcome here. If you don't have a dog, the resident Australian sheep dogs will keep you company - They are VERY mellow.
Believe all the 5 Star reviews from us Sonoma locals. This place is d'a bomb! Taylor's Refresher wishes their food could even approach this quality.
Brought friends and other fellow Yelpers here on Saturday for a late lunch.
Lemon Verbena Tea, delish as always.
The Fried Green Tomatoes were really really good too - although, I didn't like the thousand island dipping sauce my DCs who are ok with Mayo didn't seem to mind it.
The pickles were fab!
Both the Pulled Pork and the BBQ'd beef sandwhichs - the buns were burnt, and although the meat was good, the buns were a disappointment. - I won't hold it against them this time... everyone has bad days.
Fries and Onion rings delish.
Cole slaw was a little over dressed for my taste (again a mayo thing) but the BF liked it.
Beans with Ham Hocks - ohh so good.
This is a must stop. reasonable too & a great place to get coffee and a killer breakfast in the AM!

The Fremont is Sonoma's new best-kept secret. It is basically a roadside diner with some of the best food found in Sonoma at reasonable prices. The menu includes the standard burger and fires, malts, etc. But they also have barbecue whole hog and brisket. The whole hog is served "pulled-pork" style.
Unlike most "BBQ" places in and around Sonoma, they are doing it right. The meat is perfectly smoked, the sauce not too sweet, and it isn't drenched in it. One of the best pork sandwiches I've had this side of the Mississippi.
My son tried the baked macaroni and cheese, which has a hint of nutmeg making it pretty unique.
The fried pie (yes, fried) was a perfect end to a perfect meal.
They have both indoor and outdoor seating, so it should be good all year round.
The Fremont uses mostly seasonal, local ingredients, so everything is really fresh and delicious. Plus, it is a great example of eating local. A nice sustainable model.
This is a must-stop if you are visiting wine country and want to have a casual but delicious lunch.
I remember this place back when it was Babe's Burgers. Well the burgers really kick ass today! In fact they are so messy I could not stop eating it, just had to hurry up and eat the fries later. The wife had the BBQ pork sandwich, very messy too. Fries & onion rings were very good.
For an appetizer I had a Idaho Spud candy bar.
This place is an ironic slice of wonder. Time travel to pure Americana, to a time where this was not ironic, kitschy cute, etc., this was the WAY it WAS in my early childhood.
This rare jewel takes classic American taste and filters it through the food-loving wine country aesthetic, and packages it up in the iconic wrappings of the American Baby Boom of the 30's through 60's. I could not help but take lots of photos, which I will upload now..
I drive this road several times a month. For years, this place was an independent small-town greasy burger drive-in place. Then it shut down a long time.. years? Now it is back and transformed into something wonderful.
I can't wait to have a weekend breakfast here, with biscuits & gravy.. with hand-dripped coffee (Euro style),
loved it! Went here for breakfast with my family. We got the biscuits and gravy, a waffle, an egg and ham sandwich. It was all great. Coffee was great, OJ was fresh. They use Niman Ranch meats, farm fresh eggs, homemade biscuits and sausages. Price was good too
I like that they had a few old Mr Potatoheads for my 2 year old to play with. Worth the 45 minute drive to Sonoma! I can't wait to go back to try lunch
This small diner was the perfect place to have lunch before doing some wine tasting. It was a warm sunny day so we sat outside and enjoyed some wonderful coffee, the pulled pork sandwich (amazing), and some fried green tomatoes. I can't wait to come back and sample more items on the menu.
This is what Sonoma is supposed to be! The food is fresh, local and a treat to the palate! The staff are friendly even when swaped to the gills.
You can get all sorts of great, affordable things to eat on site and fun treats to go. I really enjoyed the pickled grapes and am about to try my hand at them before grape season ends.
Decor is antique, like my grandparents place in Iowa, it's very comforting and cute.
Bonus for the friendly pup that greets you when you park.
I think that this is one of the best restaraunts in sonoma. Actually, I know it is. I've lived in sonoma for about 30 years and this is one for the records. Wonderful, fresh milkshakes, amazing pulled pork sandwich and great service. They support local, sustainable farms too! Highly recommended for anyone that likes to eat at diners but also insists on quality food and service.
Ok Ok.. I have not written a review in a very long time.. The economy has been hard on me. But I had to check out the Fremont (formerly Babe's burgers), and it is worth writing about.
This place is so good!! The food was awesome. I had a hamburger with blue cheese. It comes with fries and homemade pickles (Yummers!). My fiance had the pulled pork sandwich and I happened to sneak a bite it was super tasty. The meat is so fresh and full of flavor. I can't wait to go back here again. But the best part about this place is the charm it has.
Antique country decor that includes colored mason jars on the shelves and old fashioned candy bars for sale. They also sell jars of homemade jams and sweets. The day I went they had an apricot pastry, cookies and zucchini bread .
This place is very nostalgic and has awesome food, I seriously can't wait to go back!
I have wanted to stop at the Fremont Diner for the last few months as I often drive my wife and kids to Napa to visit my mother. Something about the sign advertising Whole Hogs & Fried Pies spoke to me. I am glad we finally stopped this labor day weekend for lunch.
The Fremont Diner reminds me of Taylor's Refresher back in the day before it became overrun by hordes of tourist foodies. It is a slow food place, in the middle of nowhere near the Napa/Sonoma county line.
I had the whole hog pulled pork sandwich, the wife had an heirloom tomato open faced sandwich, and the kids had some burgers. Extremely well cooked, fresh, well seasoned and tasty. There is an indoor seating area screened to keep out the flies, decorated in a retro, 50's style motif that works with the rural surroundings. Fresh flowers from the garden on the tables, lemonade served in mason jars, cool and sweet, and a damn fine vanilla shake for my girls to enjoy.
Don't get a ticket for speeding on your way here, it is one of those real unknown gems.
Oh my god! This place is amazing! Me and my girl went here the other day for breakfast. She had eggs, ham and the best grits we've ever had. I had to try the biscuits and gravy. The coffee was unbeatable. Everything was amazing! The decor is rustic and very charming. So we couldn't wait to go back for lunch, and today was the day! I had the whole hog sandwich, my mouth is watering just writing about it! Delicious pulled pork topped with cole slaw on a toasted bun. And the bbq sauce is not too sweet or heavy. The whole hog comes with onion rings that are fat, crunchy and not greasy. My girl had the brisket sandwich. It was the best brisket we ever had. Nice and tender and smoked to perfection. Served open face on a toasty bun with coleslaw, pickled onions and some delicious beans. One for the books! I just wish we had room for the fried pie! I guess we'll have to go back! Overall amazing high quality food, great laid back
atmosphere.
This is the cutest place ever! Absolutely try the grilled cheese sandwich and salad. Really good.
I have a complaint about some thing that is driving me crazy.
If you ask me if I want cream in my coffee DO NOT GIVE ME MILK! Their coffee is outstanding and brewed one cup at a time and is super strong SO when you add milk you do nothing but ruin a good cup of joe. This has happened every time I have had breakfast there. I thought they just didn't have cream until I saw them pull it out from under the counter. Not only that, they give you the milk in one of those little pitchers that implies cream.
Also, if you are open at 7 be there at 7. My husband has driven by numerous times on his way to work and they are not open and it's after 7. We live in the neighborhood and love having them here.
updated- below you will find my original review, I have dropped it a star- the staff is just not able to engage, this is a roadside diner some personality needs to shine through, the food alone will not keep people coming back over time! I have now eaten there 5 times since my initial gush...each time have sat at the bar, each time tried to engage and nothing more than a nod or a smile... the owner himself seems so focused on canning and outside business that he doesnt even smile as he walks past... the girls (I am sorry for saying girls the women) who do the bulk of the work are also so overworked and busy it is hard to see how this place becomes more than its initial rave reviews... someone please build them a web site.. I hear they have closed their one time catering business in order to focus on this place... maybe that will loosen it up...but without the personality of the owners and staff engaging the enthusiastic diners, the eye on the occasional inconsistency and , the lack of fried chicken my last visit ( seriously make that a must on menu please!) I think this place has all the possibility of failure... one of those places people will lament the passing, but had just stopped going, for no particular reason other than a lack of human touch..read my first review below...
*I will gush here! These people..this place...is perfect! it is the roadhouse food, the country simple elevated to its proper place in the california palate of cuisine. There is little to recommend Sonoma for eats..this one changes everything!..I want people to go here, I want people to halp make these kids get over the hump, theirs is a big hump to get over...location location location...it is perfect and could kill them...what else could kill them is over reaching..catering, charcuterie extra things that a small business could do to sink the concept.....the menu is simple, the portions good some of the twists are revelations..but... as nice as the staff is -they need to learn how to engage customers ..it is hard to cook and entertain and so the food is great..the banter in an empty bar space is forced...has to be pulled like the pork from the hard woring skeloton crew here...
This is the kind!
The old Babe's burgers has a charming remodel. There is a lovely patio with umbrellaed tables.
The serve breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, fries and shakes.
I just went there the other day and had the pulled pork. So great! It was huge and instead of saving half I ate the entire thing!!
The whole place is great! southern/vintage/rustic charm.
I am excited for more meals to come!
I really like this place. This review at Sonoma County Line hits it on the head for me:

Really cool atmosphere, really good food. Honest place.
This place is great! I drive past here every day to/from work in Napa and had watched them take the rundown Babe's and transform it into the charming roadside spot.
Finally after driving by so many times, hubby and I went here for lunch last weekend and now we can't wait to go back! The burger was incredible - cooked perfectly, great bun, great toppings...fantastic!! And the accompanying fries were perfect. We've been talking about this burger ever since. Now I can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu, including breakfast.
The place seems to be catching on to others, as well; the parking lot was packed when we went for lunch around 1:30. Guess the secret's out! :o)
So much fun! Great food and a great vibe! I just went with my children for lunch and we had a great time! A must for everyone! Go fast and put on your list to go frequently!!!!!!! Thanks for a perfect place to lunch and a great value!
We stopped off at the Fremont Diner this afternoon for lunch on the way back from a business meeting in Napa and were very impressed by the place. I had a giant burger with cheese and just-made fries and a jar of sweet tea. Everything is made-to-order fresh with top ingredients, on-site BBQ, pickles and breads.. My husband had a fish sandwich, which came with roasted potatoes and pickled onions. It must have been delicious because it was gone in a flash. The rustic, open air porch, and charming little details like fresh flowers in vases, old-fashioned sodas and candy make this a one of a kind stop. We wished we had room for dessert, and were intrigued by fried fruit pies, and caramel blueberry cake. I can see making this a planned stop on any trip south.
