One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Ate here the other night and it was so great!
Our waitress was wonderful, extremely friendly and always stopping by to check in and was quick to ask if we wanted refills on any of our drinks.
I had the Filet Mignon, very tasty! My boyfriend ordered sea bass, said it was delicious as well.
There are a great variety of beers, some I hadn't heard of before.
The menu has a wide variety as well and I felt everything was greatly priced.
I am looking forward to trying their brunch!
Absolutely spectacular food. Super friendly service. I cannot say a bad thing really. I chose this place for a friend's birthday dinner on a weeknight. The place is still undiscovered, so the restaurant was quiet and perfect for an intimate conversation between a small group of friends. The wine list is very well chosen and the waitress was very helpful in choosing the wines we ordered. i.e. she didn't alway suggest the most expensive ones and she actually thought about the food we ordered and pairings.
I ordered two dishes of the day: a baked goat cheese salad and codfish with smoked eggplant. Both were super super delicious, high quality ingrendients with thoughtful flavors added. I also had the Dessert flower (dessert something?) desert with cactus that was tasty, but a bit underseasoned, but definitely good as a stand alone vegetarian dish.
A few other people had beef/steak and enjoyed it, but I think the seafood was the highlight. The owner came around to check on us a couple times, which I usually find overbearing, but he seemed nice and genuinely interested in our thoughts. I had a great time and will be back!
Note: The only reason why they don't get 5 stars is that a friend complained about 2 of the 3 dishes she ordered. One was overcooked and the other was super salty. I tried both and she was right.
I tried to like this place. It appears so cute and inviting, ah but that's what I get for attaching feeling to inanimate objects. I always knew my childish whimsy would deceive me.
Inviting, perhaps if the waitress thinks you're hot or into her. Otherwise you can just suck it. Yeah, I know it's the Wburg vibe, but if both of the only two tables have to flag you down, there's a problem. I know you're busy deciding which slightly hunched over posture looks like you care the least, but you never gave me the opportunity to ask for cream for my coffee. In fact, why do I even need to ask you? Isn't that what you were supposed to do when you brought the coffee?
I'm not a needy customer. If the servers are slammed, I am really sympathetic. Sometimes my dining partner will even tell me to stop cleaning the table for them. But, this hasn't been the case either time I visited Flying Cow. Both times the servers are just standing around. And the first visit, the waitress was rather rude.
Second, what the hell man, if customers at two of the three tables have their coats on, you need to turn the heat on. No, really. I don't care what it costs or any other whiny excuse. Turn the heat on.
Perhaps it'd be all worth putting up with if something was so great tasting. But eh, nothing to see here.
Decor - Thumbs up!
Service - Thumbs middle?
Food - Thumbs down.
We came here for a friends birthday and picked this place based on location. You walk in and it has a very french restaurant feeling with low intimate lighting and a huge wine bar when you first walk in. It was not busy at all for a Monday night.
We started out with a bottle of wine and each had an appetizer. I started with the shrimp with puree avocado tapas, which was as good as expected. I then had the Scallops with braised seaweed and toasted barley which was absolutely horrible. I don't know if there was something wrong with the scallops, but they were unbearably salty. Looking back at it, I should have sent the dish back, but I wouldn't have been able to bare telling our extremely friendly waitress.
Our waitress was as nice as could be and I absolutely loved her to death, however the food took forever to come out. At a restaurant with little foot traffic on a Monday night, I wouldn't have expected such slow service from the kitchen. However, our waitress is probably the only thing about this restaurant that is keeping me from giving it two stars.
I like to think I ordered the wrong dishes and should have had a steak. I hope it was just a bad scallop night, but that really did it for me.
A great night. Delicious food. Priced right. Great service. They even gave us free stuff like an appetizer and a dessert wine. Without us asking. They have their s**t together. I'd go again in a second.
Adorable! We got a table by the window on one of those hot-summer-yet-raining-because-its-fall type of evenings and really loved the atmosphere. Everything we ordered was a special, and all was really great and nicely presented. Definitely will go back for the steak another time when we are more hungry!

I went here with my boyfriend last Saturday. We made reservations for 10PM and were on time. When we arrived though, there were no available tables so they asked us to wait a couple minutes, which was fine with us. But they were so worried about making us wait - I think 4 different people came up to us and apologized. And they didn't lie... we were seated within 5 minutes.
The food was AMAZING. My boyfriend got the filet mignon which was so tender! And for $19, you can't beat it! I got the duck which was absolutely delicious and juicy. And then, to top it all off, the owner threw in a couple desserts on the house for making us wait a measly 5 minutes for our table. We got the crepes and creme brulee and just like our entrees, they were perfect.
There isn't one negative thing I can say about this place. The ambiance was great, low-key, and the service was extremely attentive. I would recommend this place to everyone!
First time I used Yelp to find a good restaurant....and they were on the money with this place!!!
I decided to celebrate my birthday dinner here with good friends last night (11/21/09) and what a lovely place! I made reservations a few days earlier, and they were friendly enough to call and confirm. They also offered to make a cake for me and my guests. When we arrived (1.5 hour late) they were sooooo accommodating (Party of 5 people).
We ordered a bottle of red wine, and it was fantastic. They served warm bread with virgin olive oil, and even that was good! They also served octopus ceviche and it was divine!! Once our entrees came (skirt steak, 16 oz skirt steak, Fillet Mignon) the smell of the food was hypnotizing! Everything down to the chimichurri, roasted tomato, french fries, mashed potatoes and especially the steak was DELICIOUS!!! Every bite was heavenly! They really know how to make an amazing steak!!
At the end of our dinner they surprised me with a HUGE CAKE! My friends, all the staff, and the whole place sang Happy Birthday to me. It was great :) And that cake was just down right sinful! It was a brownie-like cake with chocolate mousse...omg finger-licking-good! And best part, cake was on the house!!
All in all this place is a TRUE GEM! Ambiance is delightful, staff is so friendly, service is great, and the food....well, try it for yourself! You won't be disappointed and neither will your wallet :)
Thanks yelpers!!
Definitely worth spending 1/4 of your monthly food budget for dinner here. The scallop appetizer is divine.
Bonus: If you are a pretty woman carrying flowers for your boyfriend because he just got published in Interior Design, and you make out with him in front of the bartender, then the waitstaff may bring you free prosecco.
Ok, you guys will think I work for them, but honestly, I can't get enough of their food. We go there once every two weeks at least and when we have guests, we have a good excuse to go even more often. Tomorrow, new guests arrive - we became very popular since we moved to NY - and this means.... Yeeeyyy, we can go back again!!! :D
We had:
Shrimps with Avocado sauce - the avocado sauce is soft and creamy and ... gossshhhh.
Grilled octopus: I'm not a fan of octopus, but it was actually really good.
Steaks: whichever steak you eat, it's just delicious.
I also had the Filet Mignon, rare... it melt in my mouth, just like hummmm.
Last but certainly not least: MASHED POTATOES!!! I'm hungry now, wanna go back.
The location itself is also very nice and cosy, the waitresses helpful and friendly...
I mean, what can I say - it's just stronger than me.

Try the quails, soooo delicious. And oh, the steak rib-eye and strip, is fantastic.… Read more »
Beautiful, elegant yet casual setting. Love the woodwork and the great outdoor space.
We had quail, duck, octopus, asparagus, ceviche which were all super delicious. Will have to come back for the steaks and brunch.
Great tapas and wine place, but most awkward service. Had to walk waitress through taking our order (could we get some menus, perhaps?)
While I was in the men's room, a waiter came up (not ours) and proceeded to try and pick up my girlfriend.
Hopefully they can get some more professional servers and then this place would be worth a regular visit.
STEAK! It is soo good and at bargain prices.
I ordered the duck which was amazing, but the dish was a bit small. Wifey ordered the filet for 19 bucks! Her dish was stacked with fries and some greens along with the 3 inch steak cooked perfectly. I was jealous, she noticed, I ended up with half her steak.
Service was great. Actually the bar-tender came over a couple times when our waitress was tied up...recommended a great Argentinian wine. We should have got the bottle.
My only complaint is that it was pretty muggy out and I don't think they have AC...the ceiling fans just weren't cutting it.
I had brunch here the other day, but really just ate off the bar menu. We started with a round of bloody marys, which were well balanced and made fresh (no mix). The sausage sandwich I had was perfect - cooked just right and served on fresh, crusty baguette with just the right amount of chimichurri. It came with fries, which were also good. My friend had the lollipop chicken and an empanada which he enjoyed as well.
The check came with complimentary alfajores - the traditional argentine cookie that is dulche de leche sandwiched between two wafer cookies and coated with powdered sugar. It was a nice touch.
Its on the corner spot, so there are two sections of outdoor tables along each side. I had a great time spending a lazy, sunday afternoon there and I will be back for sure.
I had originally made reservations for my bf and his friends to try the restaurant out. I figured 8 grown men need meat to fulfill their appetite, so I went on a hunt for decent priced steak and found The Flying Cow. The next day I got great reviews from all his friends about the food. I had to try it!
My bf suggested the filet mignon - he said it was delicious and juicy. His friends ordered the ribeye and complained about it being dry. I have no idea what they were talking about because their ribeye was DELICIOUS!!! As a matter of fact, I liked the ribeye much better than the filet mignon. They also recommended the chocolate cake with raspberry - in his words "They dogged it!!" Again disappointed by their recommendation, but I highly recommend their Crema Catalana. It had just the right amount of sweetness and the texture was smooth.
Service was amazing. The waitress was always attentive and very friendly. The ambience was perfect. There was an outdoor seating area that gave you a cozy feel. A nice dinner on a summer evening!
What an awesome little place. Stopped here on a whim one night and thought it looked cute so we sat down and although it was a little pricey the service and friendliness of the place more than made up for it.
Our night actually started out with a favor off the bat of a free Amouse Bouche (sp?). Which was delicious.
And then after a little confusion placing our entrees (I went back and forth in front of the waitress cause it all sounded so good) she brought us the wrong dish.
We pointed it out very politely and she immediately went to grab the dish and get what we asked for. We stopped her and said it was fine we'll just eat the one she gave us because the duck was going to take so long. Then a Busser chimed in and goes "hey why don't you split the chicken dish you ordered while you wait for the duck and then you can split that too." Genius. If not incredibly helpful. My girlfriend and I split everything anyways.
So we went ahead with it and not only was everything delicious, but we got a free dessert (fruit ceviche. incredible) and free wine.
It was such a great experience we went back again with my dad a month later.
overall, it's a delicious place with a great atmosphere and awesome service. Don't miss the opportunity to hit it up.
My review is only that of brunch for that's all I have been here for.
While definitely not bad by any means, there is definitely room for improvement.
The brunch portions were small and I noticed that on most brunch dishes there is placed a handful of lettuce.
While I love lettuce I'm just not sure why they do this. It doesn't detract from the meal it just seems out of place on some of them.
The outdoor seating is a little cramped however the feel of the place is very laid back and relaxing. I could spend a hot minute sitting outside drinking in the sun and people watching.
Overall it seems like a quality joint. It just opened so they still have to work out some of the kinks.
I will definitely come back for dinner.
Stay tuned for an update.
I had brunch here with some friends and my experience was terrible. The food was fine, for the most part (one of my friend's steak was not cooked how she asked). The service was just awful though.
It took us forever to grab the attention of the waitress, we were sitting outside and had to knock on the window to grab her attention.
Our food took over an hour to be served, when we finally were served they forgot one of our appetizers and my fiancee's entire meal.
We assumed they were just bringing his out last and waited almost a half hour before we could grab someone's attention to bring out his food. They had no idea we had a missing dish and had to cook it starting from the time that we asked them where it was. Another hour later he was served (an hour after the rest of us had finished out meals).
The waitress was incredibly rude. When we tried to find out where our missing plates were she gave us HUGE attitude.
Two things I will say about The Flying Cow is that at the end of our meal, the owner asked us what the issue was and apologized profusely for the waitress's behavior and the mistake with our order. He then did not charge us for my fiancee's meal or for our last round of drinks. He was very polite and sincere which I really appreciated.
The reviews on here all say wonderful things about the meals and experiences so I will like to give The Flying Cow another chance. I hope that we just caught them on a bad day.... I still felt the need to express this here so people can see that not everyone has a great experience.
I'm so excited to review this restaurant only because I think it will become a very popular place in due time.
The Flying Cow has an amazing ambiance both indoors and out. The little details matched extremely well and nothing seemed to be trying to hard. As a matter of fact, I said to my friend if I was ever to open a small restaurant/cafe this was exactly how I would want it to look. A perfect blend of feminine and soft decorative touches added to a rustic and masculine feel of an Argentinean steakhouse. Dark woody furniture, a very interesting angular front entrance and wide open windows make you feel like you stumbled upon a quaint family run restaurant that only the chosen ones are lucky enough to find. The service was unbelievable. Everyone was soo friendly and soo accommodating. They took the time to talk to us and get to know our party which was a nice touch and something that always stays with you in your memory long after the meal has settled and moved on. Even when the restaurant got busier towards the end of the night, we never felt neglected.
We started the meal off with hotly toasted bread and butter and an amuse bouche of a mango-y, creamed corn and jalapeno concoction with a scallop. Delish and interesting and packed the right amount of kick.
We also enjoyed our tapas and appetizers, I'd recommend the calamari with citrus, the grilled octopus, the beef and the caprese empanadas. Also the grilled shrimp with avocado mousse was insane. Our waitress recommended a great fruity bottle of Argentinean White, which was fresh, crisp and the perfect drink for a warm summer night in WilliesBurg.
We are a table of meat lovers, so it was rib eyes, filet mignons and strip and skirt steaks around the table. All delicious and for the price you have to wonder how they stay in business. Word of advice, between the fries and the mashed, get the fries. They were some good frites. Oh yeah and don't forgot to slather on the chimichurri sauce. It's got amazing flavor.
We ended our meal with a birthday song and a candle on top of the chocolate cake for our birthday boy. It was topped with a raspberry sauce. In my opinion, not my favorite dessert because I don't like my cakes so dense. But we did get the crema catalana, which in essence is just a creme brulee. But it was easily one of the BEST creme brulee's I've had in awhile. It wasn't too sweet and had a very good eggy flavor. A perfect balance.
I enjoyed myself at the Flying Cow. It's a casual and friendly place and for the price I'd say it's a destination spot.
Yah! What a great brunch place. We sat outside and really enjoyed the food. It was all really well done- from the bloody marys (nice and spicy) to the coffee (rich and flavorful) to ofcourse the entrees. With the coffee, they brought out steamed milk. I know its a small part of the meal, but those kinds of details really show that a restaurant is trying to treat the customer to a great experience. I was really surprised at not only how good the food tasted, but how nicely it was all presented. Very cute place in terms of ambience and decor. Only downfall is service was really spotty and slow. We didn't mind a whole lot since we were enjoying our brunch, but I hope that they work out the kinks.
From a very selfish point of view, I should not be writing this review: when a neighborhood place is so much to one's taste, why want to draw more people? But The Flying Cow deserves to thrive, and here's why. I am very fastidious when it comes to ingredient quality and service. The Flying Cow unites an unpretentious, warm atmosphere to all the other factors that allow for a tasteful and comforting dining experience are there: attentive yet relaxed service, a good wine list (I haven't looked at the beer selection), a pleasant decoration (I recommend outdoor seating).
And the details, ah, the details were what wrapped it up for me--and made me think that this is the first New York restaurant I have ever been to that ties high quality and simplicity together (like in traditional places in France or Italy): the way the cutlery was set, cloth napkins, an amuse-bouche with our drinks (presented without a fuss, just as a little something before our dinner), the waitress having us taste the wine...
As for the food: the meat, even though prepared very simply (grilled or seared), is of tremendous quality for its price, and the portions are, well, definitely on the Argentinian (or American) side; the side of French fries was good, the chimichurri that accompanied the ribeye was very flavorful. The watercress salad was refreshing, and the octopus special was superb. The marquise au chocolat hit the sweet spot, but my favorite was the complimentary cookies, pure delight. (The owner, who came to ask us how we had enjoyed the meal, a practice that should almost be a rule, had an extra plate of those brought to our table when I told him how delicious they were, along with a cognac on the house...)
I must say that I have never been here for brunch, and have not tasted many items on the menu, but meat-lovers (and more widely, price-value lovers and anyone who enjoys good food and good atmosphere), this is the place for you.
I don't know if it is intentional or not, but this restaurant has the very distinct feel of Spanish restaurants. Sitting down to a meal here was reminiscent of sitting at a sidewalk cafe in Spain for a 3 hour long meal. The staff was very friendly and eager to please and the food was tremendous. I was trying to convince to 2 friends I went with to go in on the meat dish, but to no avail. One of these days I'll make it back with some more adventurous people.
On the corner of Hope & Roebling has landed The Flying Cow - and isn't the neighborhood blessed! This Argentine gem has the best of both worlds. It's casual, yet classy - low key, yet vibrant, (thanks to the awesome neighborhood clientele & the staff). And the menu has something for everyone. Come here for a grown up dining experience. Full bar & extensive wine list with great beer on tap. The gorgeous interior & spacious outdoor street cafe allows patrons to dine in a relaxed & civilized fashion...
Being touted as an Argentine steak house can be misleading - for the choice of fare is extensive - ranging from seafood, (wild grouper ceviche & grilled shrimp w/avocado mousse), to fowl, (a delicious seared duck breast with braised shallots & boneless wild mushroom stuffed quail), to plenty of meatless tapas & yummy Escalivada grilled vegetables for the non-carnivorous types. The lunch & brunch offered is simple & elegant - standard fare with added flair such as eggs benedict, BLT's, an incredible burger on a brioche bun, & of course STEAK and eggs. (By the way - they make a killer bloody mary, too!) All this and the prices are so reasonable it's shocking. And the MEAT. These are Argentine men. 5 choices of steak along with the magnum opus of the menu, an authentic mix grill including sweet breads, chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), kidneys, short ribs & skirt steak. Clearly meant to be shared...
So hurry to this sweet spot before the lines start! Folks are already "flying" here & becoming regulars fast. (I'm one of them!) And let me end by giving props to the owners Marcello & Claudio, the new Mayors of the 'hood. They tend to their place with such charm & grace, generosity & joy. Plus they're easy on the eyes - like the rest of the staff. Yummy all around!
Tried this place out last night and was completely charmed.
The menu is simply presented and doesn't try to do too much; but pretty much all the items sounded great. I chose the filet mignon with frites -- which at $19 is a remarkable deal. It was delicious.
The service, too, was wonderful. Our waiter was friendly and we struck up a nice conversation. The owner was sitting outside, as well, and made sure that we were well taken care of. When we arrived, some work was being finished outside at one end of the outside seating. To make up for (what was really very little) noise, we were served a small bowl of delicious fish soup. And then after the meal, he also offered us a glass of prosecco on the house. But it wasn't the free food that was important -- it was the establishment's obvious interest in and affection for its customers.
I will definitely be coming back.
As good as it Gets! Want it summarized???
*Best Beef you can think off (Peter Luger is History)
*Creative Salads - Great Fries!
*The Tuna Tartare "grrrrrrr"
*Sexiest ambiance!
*Attentive Staff
*Great $$$
A word about the Ambiance: You can sit outside in the beautiful - Paris-like sidewalk area - finely and NOT overly decorated OR if you are by yourself sit at the great bar! Try their House Chard! Superb.
This place will surely thrive even in a shrinking economy!
I can't judge completely, as I didn't have a full meal there, but what I did have was great. I sat at the bar, had a nice glass of red wine, and some good conversation. After a while and after seeing how good the people's food next to me looked, I ordered the shitake mushroom crostini. It was so good, I ordered another one as soon as I was done.
The atmosphere is nice, casual, and relaxed, and I would definitely like to come back and try an entree next time. But until then, I will just remember the nutty and delicious flavor of that mushroom crostini.
I highly recommend this restaurant!
First off, it is an open air restaurant on the corner of Hope and Roebling. So on a nice day, like this past memorial day, outdoor seating was difficult to find, so we were able to comprimise for this setup and felt very comfortable as the meal went from evening to night. They effectively use the space so you don't feel cramped by other tables, but you know that they are utlizing it to it's full capacity.
Secondly, the service was great. Our server was very knowledgable about the items on the menu, and right off the bat told us what items were not available (as opposed till waiting till everyone has decided on their meals to give that final let down of it running out). She made strong reccomendations and was extremely polite. During our meal they offered a sample of the gazpacho soup with shrimp, and after our meal, they offered a sample of their favorite desert wine, and a traditional Argentinean dessert so we didn't leave without our sweets fix.
Lastly, the food was delicious. I ordered the Asparagus with Lemon and rice puff appetizer which was a light and flavorful starter. My entree was the steak frites, ordered medium rare, and I was very pleased with this also. The steak could have been a little bit more rare, but it had a great flavor and was accompanied by a pesto-style dip which complimented the steak nicely. I am not big on dips with the steak, as you shouldn't need them if it is cooked well, but it was a nice touch and was not an overpowering flavor.
I strongly recommend this restaurant based on its decor, setup, service and food (basically straight across the board)!
only went for coffees and desert--we got all of the deserts on the menu (they only had 2) service the guy was chilled out and sittting outside felt like i was in barcelona or something nice place..
The Flying Cow is aptly named in that this is place has absolutely killer steaks flying out of the kitchen for unbeatable prices. The owner, Claudio, who is a don of the meat business as well, is tending to his customers with the grace and service you should expect from someone who stands behind their food and offering something very unique. 4-5 steaks on the menu, each at or under 20.00, yes, 20 dollars, and all cooked to perfection. I've been three times since they opened and have tried the Filet and the Rib Eye (16 oz.). They filet is a standard top notch cut and the rib eye is a boneless cicle cut--these guys understand what you mean when you say medium rare so make sure you know your proper steak temps before ordering. I've heard the strip is fantastic as well, and it's on my list--I also suggest asking them what's the best cut of the day depending on your preference. Steaks come with spinach, a beautifully baked tomato and a perfect side of frites. The ambiance reminds me of something in SoHo, perhaps Park Slope, west village, but it sits right at home within walking distance to Walter Foods, another neighbor I love. The decor is as simple as it needs to be when food is the focus and the energy is really nice. But prices are outstanding, and you will not find a better steak and a bottle of wine and/or cocktails for this money, or even 30% more, anywhere in the city. I have not checked out the beers but I think they probably have some goodies on tap and bottled. Sides and salads are all excellent and portions are heaping, especially the sweet breads, which for 6 dollars are a meal unto themselves--these might have been just a tad overdone for my taste but would be perfect with a beet salad and a big glass of red. Cocktails are on point and there are a few tables outside for when the weather is finally right. If all goes well, this should be an establishment in the hood and definitely a welcome addition to the burg's up and coming restaurant scene. You will feel like family here..
I came here from New Jersey and let me tell you my trip was while worth it . The food was delicious, the ambience was cozy and relaxing. The service was great!!!!! GREAT FOOD AND WINE !!!!!!!!!!! The outdoor seating was GREAT very laid back I ENJOYED IT! Be back soon A++++++++++++++
