Went here because a friend was a Twitter fan and we wanted to take advantage of the 50% promotion and we love trying new places.

The food was tasty but I hate to say not tasty enough for me to go out of my way, no where near where I live. We both had a glass of wine, mine red, hers white, both were very good. It was a pleasant surprise that we got a few appetizer, savory doughnut, since it was a new menu item. They were pretty good with 3 sauces on the side, my favorite was the dijon stuff, because I like mustard. We also shared the cheese plate which was really really good. It was put together very well, but I would have liked more fruit, not just some grapes, even though they were tasty. After the entree we were very satisfied, personally I was stuffed, but I did skip lunch.

If your in the area stop by. The decor was interesting, pretty dark though, so I couldn't really see a lot of the colors, if any. I really did like the wine bottle holders on the wall, nice idea. That's it.

It's 3. Three! 3 restaurants in one! What an intriguing concept. The Fifth is one of the three restaurants in the space also occupied by Kitsch'n and K's Cafe in the old Montgomery Ward Warehouse building.  And through a clever use of heavy velvet drapes you are directed to the section of the restaurant that is open at that time.

We went in the evening to check out The Fifth (also open for lunch) and it's interesting menu full of great dishes to share and enjoy. While the menu will change seasonally, it was nice to note that the shareable dishes ran between $6 and $12 with a few entrees like braised pork and NY strip steak between $17 and $24.

We started with the trio of artisan cheese plate which was delicious and came with two different types of bread and both cow and goat cheeses.

Next up- mussels in white wine sauce, and some raw oysters. The mussels were terrific and come with bread to sop up all that great sauce. The oysters were also good although they came "dressed" with cocktail and mignonette sauce and I would have preferred to season them myself. But that's just my preference.

Finally- as though we were on a mission to sample the entire menu (we were!) we had the steak tartar and the lacquered chicken wings. The steak tartar was perfect, served with a raw egg on top (for those of you who have been to the Paramount Room- same tartar). As for those chicken wings- unique and different yet quite good. They are cooked in honey so they are sweet with crunchy skin and tender meat. Make sure to get the ranch sauce that is in the bottom of the dish.

And then, dessert. While neither of us had any room left- we tried a couple of their desserts- the cool, chocolate fondue served with cakes and cookies for dipping, and the trio of cupcakes. Both were tasty but there was a pumpkin spice cupcake that won my heart out of the bunch.

Service was stellar thanks to Deidre, bartender extraordinaire, who not only kept the food coming but who was offering us up tastings of some of the drinks off of their specialty drink menu. The wine list, while limited has an amazing Syrah on it that I loved. The wine list is another thing that will rotate as they offer up boutique and organic wines.

The decor was a little stark and modern for my personal taste- a little industrial, but the floor to ceiling velvet drape room dividers did help to cozy the space up a bit. There is alot of metal and acrylic and concrete which strikes a modern, simplistic space good for catching up with friends or having a business dinner and the tons of flickering candles in the space lent an air of romance as well.

Opened by the same team as Volo, the Paramount Room, and Kitsch'n, you'll recognize the quality of the food and desserts as the same team brings them all to life here.

And here's a tip. If you follow The Fifth on Twitter- they offer up promotional offers randomly which is how we got 50% off of our food last night. Sign up as the food is already reasonably priced but at half off? Can't beat that deal.

Great food, friendly and attentive service, reasonable prices, all housed in an innovative space (love that restaurant in a restaurant idea!).  Check it out!

A friend of mine read about this place in Metromix and decided to round up a few guys to try it out. The menu looked interesting enough, but unfortunately, the quality and inventiveness of the food just really wasn't up to par, especially with some of the newer places such as Rootstock serving up some spectacular food and wine these days.

With five of us dining, we were able to try out most of the menu. The only thing that I would call passable were the mussels, only because they were in a savory butter broth.

We also had the Kobe burger which was way overcooked and not anywhere close to good. The steak tartare was chunky and didn't taste too fresh. But by far the worst item was the salmon flatbread with creme fraiche, which only had 3-4 pieces of not very good smoked salmon atop flatbread that tasted like it wasn't freshly made.

Overall, we left hungry and fairly disappointed. We won't be back.

This place is great - and it's close to where I live (well, not that far), and it's owned by the same person who opened one of my favorite restaurants in Roscoe Village, Volo.

The Fifth is really cute and modern.  I had the wagyu beef burger and a glass of red wine - I highly recommend this place!

I was teetering between giving this place a 2 or a 3 and decided to go with 2 stars for the only two things I liked--some of the food and the reasonable prices. There's a couple of reasons this place was empty during peak dinner time on a Saturday night: (1) limited and imperfect menu, (2) uninspired and somewhat depressing interior, and (3) location.

Let's start with location, this place is located behind Japonais, bring your binoculars because unless you see the tiny sign that says "Kitsch'n," you won't be able to find it. Here's a novel idea, when you open a restaurant, buy a sign and put it on the outside so people can find it. I realize it's a restaurant within a restaurant, but still, a sign would be nice.

I didn't care for the decor of this place at all and it added nothing to my dining experience, the "less is more" bare look of this place makes it look unfinished. The wooden tables and uncomfortable wooden chairs looked like they came from a school garage sale. And it was way too dark in there, I felt like I was in a basement even though we were above ground.

There were good and bad things about the menu. Let's start with the good--items on the menu were definitely creative and things you wouldn't necessarily find anywhere else, however, there were only about 15 items on the menu. In a foodie city like Chicago, you gotta give people a little more choice than that. And of the 15 items on the menu, two of them were unavailable that night, and our server explained that the dough wasn't rising right, so the chef decided not to serve those items. Again, is it just me, or should you work out the kinks in the menu for the only 15 things you're serving before you open a restaurant?

The menu is seasonal, but here's what we ordered: potato ravioli, lacquered chicken wings, beets and goat cheese, vegetable tempura, and cupcakes for dessert. The potato ravioli was my favorite thing on the menu. The chicken wings would have been great if they had just been cooked a little bit more, they were a bit undercooked for my taste. Vegetable tempura was awful because none of the vegetables were cooked at all. Beets and goat cheese was interesting. I liked the pumpkin and chocolate cupcakes but didn't like the fact that they were cold because they had just come out of the fridge. Unless I'm having ice cream, I'd like my dessert to be warm or at least room temperature.

Prices are very reasonable, pretty much everything is under $10, but then again the portions are kind of on the small side. Service was ok even though our server got one of our orders wrong--she comped the incorrect dish she brought out. I wouldn't try to stop you from going to the Fifth, but I think there are plenty of better restaurants. I know they've only been open for a few weeks, but I hope they continue to work out their kinks and improve on their menu.

I come to Kitsch'n brunch all the time so I wanted to try the fifth. We came in for dinner their second day open. Very happy and surprised since I wasn't sure about the restaurant in a restaurant thing.

Mussels were delicious and the "cuidate" cocktail was amazing. Server was sweet and helpful.

It was romantic but I wish the music was a little louder and rockier so it could be a good hangout place as well

Surprised to see the bad review already, I mean they just opened. Give them a minute. Then again I am a restaurant person so I may be more relaxed about those things

Came for dinner on a saturday night with a few girlfriends at around 7:30 PM. I expected the place to a be a bit more hoppin as it just opened AND  was featured on metromix as one of Chicago's new restaurants to check out. For a second (only a second), we were contemplating walking over to Japonais but decided against it. I'm soooooooo glad we decided to stick around. It turned out to be a fabulous dinner!

Here's what I loved about this place:
1.) Small, unique, seasonal menu - makes ordering simple and you know that everything is going to be delicious. It definitely was. We got the laquered chicken wings, the potatoe ravioli, the beets & goat cheese, tempura vegetables, and trio of cupcakes. We shared everything as it all came out in medium size portions. The chicken wings w blue cheese were scrumptious. The drink menu was very eclectic. They use all organic and bio-friendly liquors--i'm not sure what it means...but i like it! Overall, I left  satisfied, but not overly stuffed. It was perfect!

2.) Reasonable Prices - seriously, we each spent like 16 bucks a piece and filled up our tummies with four entres and dessert. It's so nice to be able to enjoy a nice night out on such reasonalbe prices. I was very pleased. Also, we were told that if we become a fan of The Fifth of facebook, we'd get 50% off our next dining experience!

3.) Cozy ambiance - dark woods, candles, minimalist style...i loved it. Although it was kinda empty when we got there, the place was pretty full by the time we left. The Fifth seems to attract a late night crowd. Next time I go, I think i'll head over for a late dinner around 8:30-9ish.

4.) Excellent service - our waitress was so sweet. She wanted to make sure we were having a great time and brought out complementary cocktails for us to taste. The staff here really cares about making the evening special for its guests. Kudos to them all!

Ok, so i've said enough. Everyone must try!
