I remember stumbling upon this place a couple times after late nights in Little Tokyo. Each time, I neglected to enter. Now I wonder why.

This spot has a killer selection of Japanese imports(women and beer), good music(on the right night), and interesting food(and if your nice to your server, you might score a free desert).

A great place for an interesting menu as well. Head over for appetizers and beer, hang out and listen to some jazz in the alley like setting, adorned with Christmas lights.

A great find in the ever expanding little Tokyo.

Cool location, without a doubt.  Selection of drinks is solid.  Service leaves much to be desired.

It's still in my LT rotation, but I hope the service improves...

The entrance is a tiny alley, so just look for the bouncers outside.  Parking is abundant after hours, as there's no much nightlife in the area.   It's the perfect place to hit up after a nice dinner to hangout with friends and lovers.  There's patio seating and charming decor with strings of lights - not rundown/cheap and not snobby - just right.

There's a full bar, and most of the cocktails and beers can be had with Japanese twist.  I got a flight of four Japanese beers - a good sampler to try without committing to anything, if you don't have a Japanese love of your life.  We eyed the food and desserts lustfully, as they came out, but we were stuffed from our earlier fling with sizzling AYCE K-BBQ.

The crowd is super chill.  Everyone's just chitchatting with each other and enjoying a few drinks.  It's definitely not the kind of place where you have look over and give an annoyed look to the loud obnoxious drunk girl or guy who just spilled a drink on you.  Just come enjoy a fine evening under the LA stars.

So one night after hitting up the LA Auto Show I ended up here for my first trip. Well I was very happy checking this joint out!

Very kewl small bar down a hallway in the midst of a larger building... we went to the bar itself and had a couple quick hits... great prices very fun environment.

I need to get my ass back here so I can do a full review other than just that they had an awesome beer selection that I think rotates. They also have a full bar and lots o grub.

Who wants to join me to go back and just chill here for an hour or three??? but its also very close to a number of great lil restaurants in Japan town and great  for a pre dinner beverage or an a post dinner treat...

I'm a sucker for string lights and patio seating in an intimate setting. During the day AND at night! It really takes you away from the grime of LA and sets you in an ironically clean alley.

That's as much as I can say that wouldn't tread on what's already been said. A group of friends and I came here after a trip to the Geffen on a Sunday Funday and spent a lot of time drinking, eating (the Far Bar burger, Kobe beef hot dog and certain tacos were great) and being merry. And with an all-day happy hour, how can you go wrong?

    Updated - 1/27/2012 5 Check-ins Here

My update still shows four stars, but in spirit, it's four and a half. It's still reliably great, but just not quite great enough to get a fifth star from me. Well, the burger at happy hour prices would probably be worth five stars.

Man, they really do a good burger. Maybe I am just a crappy chef, but no matter how hard I try, I can never get my homemade burgers to be quite as good as Far Bar, or Durty Nelly's, or any other place that serves an awesome burger. (I can, however, decently duplicate my order from The Counter, fwiw).

Warning: Friday evenings there is a guy who comes in and plays music. It's not horrible music, but it's coffee shop guitar songs and covers played at such a loud volume that conversation becomes difficult.

The main selling point is of course it's location as a hole in the wall that opens into a patio area between buildings. There is something about the ambiance (when the guy isn't playing music) that is just really pleasant.

The Far Bar is a hidden gem!

The atmosphere and feeling of this place is spot on. It is down a long alley that opens up to become a different world, it is totally removed from the craziness of LA. We sat outside and everything was very clean, the floor, tables....

Our server Anna was great, she made great food and drink recommendations and was attentive but not overly so, it really was a perfect service.

For happy hour all of the burgers are $5!! I had the Italian Samurai, one of the best burgers that I have ever had. It was a top of the line gourmet burger that other places in downtown would charge $15 for.

The beer selection is amazing!! They had about 25 beers on tap, all of them craft beers and another 40 or so bottled beers. $1 off beers on tap for happy hour, but the regular prices are not bad at all, very reasonable for the quality that you are getting. All of the drinks we had were really great and I would get again....

    Golden Road Hefeweizen
    Mad River Jamaica Red
Wandering Aengus Cherry Cider - AMAZING!
    Eaglerock Manifesto
    Hitachino White

Over all this place was perfect!!!!!!

I really really like coming here.
The people are friendly, the bartenders are attentive, and the bouncers are cool people!
The vibe here is very chill and it's a good place to grab a few drinks with friends.
I've been here on two Friday nights and it's never too crowded.
Diverse crowd and good beats in the background.
Patio area is really nice and I look forward to enjoying this place in the summer.
They have an extensive beer list and they range between $5 - $8.

We decided to try the wasabi fries. After eating these, I realized that I don't like wasabi. If you like wasabi, the flavor permeates with the sauce and you'll like it. If you don't wasabi, don't get them or do what we did, and ask for ketchup.

Three and a half stars. but I'll round up to four.

This place is cool. good for happy hour. good food. good service.
nice place. nothing fancy. you are literally hanging out in a back alley! it just got spruced up a bit.

i like it because it's not crowded, it's not a scenester, hipster place. it's not a place to prance around and be seen. you just hang out, chill, talk with your friends. nice.

    check it out.

I really want to give this place at least four stars, but the service we received is preventing me from doing so.

I really enjoy the open air setting.  It is a small place, but i prefer that. They ad a DJ, but i am not sure why.  It seemed to e a canned set similar to Musak.  There was a projector running the game, but the picture was horrible.

They have a great section of beer and liquor, especially bourbons.

I had a burger.  It was pretty good, and it was big.  The fries had a nice garlic flavor.

We were told tables were first come, first serve so we waited for an open table which did not take to long.  After sitting down we were then told that table was reserved.  You can not have it both ways.   Your policy is one way or the other.

After ten minutes we had to go get our server who was standing at the hostess table the entire time doing nothing.  The service did get better as the night went on.

Far Bar wins all over the place in my book for one of the best happy hour deals around! I always pass by this place looking down the small alleyway to see what's inside but I never got the chance to until I was searching for a happy hour sopt with good food and drink. Lo and behold I stumble upon my bookmarks and decide to check out far bar with my friends from out of town.

Was I disappointed? Hell no! Our server was very helpful in explaining what was on the happy hour menu and seriously? Who could go wrong with a $5 burger that looked like about half a pound big?? We all had burgers and specialty beers, their beer selection is extensive and very impressive. I tried the Japanese dolphin hef to pair up with my burger and it was awesome. Meat was juicy and the garlic fries were perfect. Looking up into the buildings while sitting in their cute little patio between two brick walls makes you feel like you're not even in Los Angeles, but more in a place like Little Italy.

If I wasn't full I would have ordered more food but they give you the best deal with that  $5 burger. I can't wait to come back and try more stuff on their menu and maybe a cocktail next time. Overall, best place to chill with friends and have a drink over good food for cheap.

3.5 stars for a chill little bar, tucked away in a dimly lit alley.  The set up is really interesting as there's an alleyway with tables, a small indoor bar, and a larger restaurant/lounge portion with bar, all twisted in a maze-like floor plan.  The Chop Suey sign still up and running.

However, the service was really lacking (almost knocked the review down to 3 stars for this).  We got there around 8 for some munchies and an early start on drinks. The place was still fairly empty.  It took several minutes for us to even be addressed.  Not sure what the issue was, but it was pretty damn annoying.  Throughout the night as it became busier, service got a little better... strange right?

The menu consists of several small Japanese fusion plates, like teriyaki sliders, wasabi garlic fries, shumei, rolls, etc.  I wanted to like the wasabi garlic fries more since most reviewers raved about them.  But really, they were just regular fries lightly drizzeled with a creamy wasabi concoction.  They were just okay, but fun to munch on nonetheless.  The shumei was interestingly spicy, I liked it!  Everything else was decent.  Drinks here were good, not very strong, but not watered down either.

The bathroom situation sucked and was reminiscent of my NYE experience at JLounge.  One restroom was out of order, so that left two available for a large amount of patrons.  There were lines and impatient people waiting in those lines...no good.  Luckily, I retained all my liquor and didn't have to use it that night.

Altogether, I plan on going back and hope that the service is better next time.

I think the main reason I like this place is because of it's location, which is in Little Tokyo.  The entire strip where this establishment is on has many great Japanese restaurants and stores.  I've only had the food here once so I can't really comment on it, but last time I was in there my buddy ordered some sliders and they were really good.  They've also got a poke appetizer that's very good.  The thing that keeps me coming back is their beer selection.  This place rules in beer selection.  I really like their selection of Japanese craft beer.  They've also got a phenomenal selection of whiskey.  The atmosphere is nice too.  Casual with a great transition from indoor seating at the bar to outdoor seating.  It's kinda tucked away in an alleyway so you have to keep your eyes peeled, but if you can find it, you'll have a wonderful time.

Who doesn't love the far bar. I personally prefer when its not busy, the place can be pretty romantic with its stringed Christmas lights on a quite late night. Don't be afraid to try the sushi, not only is the presentation suburb but its good too. The specialty drinks are only good in portion, so if the heavy handed bartender is working your better off with a stiff rum and coke. As tradition goes, it is always the Veggie Cury bowl, wasabi fries (well down) with Lilac (drink). Warning, if its freezing, don't bother, the place is meant to be a warm night spot.

It's a bar in an alley decorated in Christmas lights. Come on, man.

This is one of my happy bars. I enjoy the beef tacos--small, soft tortillas, tender and juicy beef, crunchy cabbage with a sweet dressing, and a side of sliced pickled jalapenos. I don't care for the sushi rolls and so keep to the meat items on the menu. The wasabi fries are cut thin, sprinkled with garlic, and drizzled in a wasabi sauce.

Notables: street (metered) parking. Outside, there are heating lamps around the tables. Inside, there's a bar area and a lounge area, both with flat screen tvs, but the lounge area isn't always open.

Chill place, good catch up time with a group of friends.

I was fascinated with the decapitated head staring back at me from under the floor board while waiting to use the bathroom.  I had no problem pointing it out to others who joined me in line.  Quite a conversation starter.

Having such a good time, I missed my mouth and my drink waterfalled onto my chest, my lap, as all 10 of my friends laughed.  Why were all their eyeballs on me in the first place?  It's like they were just WAITING for something to happen.  There's your show, on me guys.  Literally.

    Good times.

I found Far Bar on accident, while wandering around Little Tokyo district one summer evening with a friend. It's nice to stumble upon a place like this, and feel like you have found a secret hideaway. Clearly, this place is no secret, as there are 500-odd reviews prior to mine, but the mood of this place makes you feel that way, which is nice.

We just stopped here for a couple of beers and there was a huge selection to choose from. I went with a Belgian selection (natch) and was pleased enough to stay for the ambiance. Very much charmed by the appearance of this little spot.
As you wind through the small entrance which seems like a side door, sort of a speakeasy feel, as it opens up into an open to the air alley with small lights strung across the open space between buildings. At the back wall of this alley space there was a small plinth that looks to be a stage area, at this time there was a DJ providing moody mellow atmosphere tunes. Also some kind of vintage film was projected on the back wall. This could have gone the cheesy direction, if not executed well, but it really was. Cool.

If you continue to the left, there is seating inside, and a bar, further on through the building and there seems to be more restaurant space beyond. They were hosting some sort of beer tasting event at the time. Another "win". The staff were nice and had a good balance of attentiveness, and knowing when you are content to be left alone.

A quick scan of the menu showed me the kind of Japanese-pub food fusion that made me want to return another time, when I am hungry. Really? Japanese inspired dishes AND Belgian beer? Somebody pinch me.

Cute! Full on a Friday night around 10, but the hostess was nice enough to split off a table from a double-table a couple was using only one side of and give it to us to sit down and eat. They really were good at utilizing the space, there were quite a few older couples who sat at tables for a good hour after they were done buying any service at all.

The poke was spicy, but awesome! It's a hawaiian raw-fish cube dish, served in a cup with "taro taco" shells for you to eat them in, I loved it. Edamame was only $4, two appetizers and a beer were perfect for my bf and I while we killed time before a club!

Stopped in this weekend for a drink with an old friend and ended up having three rounds and dinner. The beers on tap were really surprising. They even had the Sculpin IPA on tap (A top ten, maybe even #1? among the beer fiends at Beer Advocate).

Only negative was that one woman was running the entire show outside. She was amazing...but we got tired just watching her keeping 75 people happy. If we lived in LA, we'd go here a lot.

Super laid-back bar and lounge in Little Tokyo. I really love the outside seating area with the string of lights overhead and the heating lamps. Super cozy and inviting.

Inside there is a bar, lot of tables, a few couches and a few TV's. The serve here was pretty good. I came here with a large birthday party and we were able to arrange tables and get food and drinks in a timely manner. The bread pudding was pretty good but the wasabi fries are awesome! Looks could be deceiving. The entrance looks like an alley and if you don't know the area you would've never thought it existed. Went here after dinner and just when you think it's pack there's actually a lounge area. The hostess was able to fit all 9 of us and were seated in some comfy couches. The drinks could be a little pricey though.

Stumbled upon this bar while kiling time before eating at Komasa, on the other side of the village plaza. We got some beers, and when I asked the waiter for sweet potato fries, and he said that they didn't serve those..but had wasabi fries. I thought "WASABI? Hm.. guess its worth a try". Ended up being AMAZING. Your reg shoe-string type thin fries with wasabi-aioli(?) sauce. Not as creamy as aioli..not sure whats in it, but we asked for more sauce because it was soo delicious!

Also love the ambiance. The small entrance which can go almost un-noticed leads to a back patio area with movie/video screening against the brick wall..the type of ambiance that makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

Hands down fav bar in Jtown so far!

Living in Tucson means sushi is an expensive meal, and often not worth the high price. Our desert climate isn't very conducive to acquiring the freshest fish. So whenever I visit the coastal cities I make a beeline for the nearest good sushi joint ASAP.

If you didn't know The Far Bar was here you might miss it... it's tucked down a tiny alley behind some other buildings in Little Tokyo. My fellow diner and I sat in the adorable outdoor area.

The Ahi Poke was delicious, served up in a little wine glass. It had the perfect balance of tangy and sweet, with a hint of spice and super fresh ingredients. The portion is a bit small for the price, but I live in a cheaper city, so that's probably just me. Next we got Shu Mai. I was disappointed that the description on the menu didn't detail the ingredients, because when I tasted it I realized it was spicy and I'm allergic to spicy food. My Aunt enjoyed them very much though.

Next we got our sushi: The Loco Roll gets the award for biggest and most Loco sushi I've ever had! Seriously, though, it's huge and it could make a meal in itself. The inside has tuna, salmon, cucumber, avocado, and crab. It's battered and fried then topped with dynamite sauce, garlic sauce, and eel sauce. It's all crunchy, creamy, saucy, sweet, savory and yummy goodness. I tend to gravitate toward these crazy fried rolls and this one did not disappoint. The Tempura was delicate and perfectly crunchy without being greasy or soggy. A-plus!

I finally made it to the Far Bar after lurking it here on Yelp! I went on a Monday night and was surprised that there was a decent crowd hanging out. They have a full inside bar and outside patio seating that is really nice and intimate.

After a couple of drinks the food seemed so appetizing so I ordered the BLAT burger. Let me just say that it hit the spot! It was really good!

For all the drinks and food my friend and I had I would say it was reasonable. I would definitely come here again, maybe on a different night to check out the crowd.

I was pretty skeptic when I first walked in. Then entrance was pretty creepy, and I feared for my life for .5 seconds, but once I got inside it was pretty cute.
Happy hour drinks are well priced, beer selection is pretty extensive, but they're pretty pricey outside of happy hour.

Anna was our waitress and she was pretty great. Cracking a few jokes in-between visits and she always made sure we were doing ok.
Their food was fine, we had a pretty big party so we shared pretty much everything. I tasted the pizza, tacos and burgers (all of which I forgot the proper name for) and they only tasted better as I kept drinking.......that says something no?

I'll only be back if I'm in the area, not gonna go out of my way to come here.

Came here with the girlfriend and some friends in the summer, but as I walked by the place today. It's time to give this place the review it deserves. Before that one time we never been here and we heard the music from outside and it looked like a pretty cool place to try out. The food wasn't bad and the waitress was friendly and helpful.

    We had their:

-Wasabi Fries (Which was good, but not the BEST as everyone says.) Because place is the only one that I know that serves this.
    -Crispy Chicken Dumplings
    -Ming's Wings
-Ahi Poke with taro taco shells (These were good we had two orders)
-Kobe Beef Hot Dog was really good.
-ROTI PIZZAS (Asian mini pizzas) had the Thai chicken, peanut sauce, mozzarella, red onion, cilantro

They have a pretty good Sake list; we tried a pretty smooth one and end up on getting three bottles by the end. Everything was perfect being in the first room, they have the outdoor area. As the first room had to close and we had to move to the back room where the DJ was at.

Here's where the night went from a great night to a bad night we walk to the back area and the Dj is playing there's a few couples in the area talking. At the end of the night the bouncers go into a commando mode and start telling the staff what to do and forcing people to leave. I look down at my watch and its 1:40 am I would understand if it's 2am. But there are only 5 people in the whole place, what's with the attitude.

But watching the bouncers telling the staff what to do, that right there shows that management doesn't have a control on their VENDOR! Yeah your rent a guard is a vendor, who works for you and doesn't order you around. You tell them what to do. If my vendor ever talked to me or my staff that way, I will have a different company or person in the next day. No if's, and's or but's!

For his manner I wanted to talk to the manager. The Manager never came out I saw him put his tail in-between his legs walk away like a scared little chiwawa. All I could think at that point was that they need to fire the manager and the others. Keep the people in the front they know how to give service.

This is a place I would say the food is pretty good and the people in the front are nice. Don't go beyond that.

The bestie & I LOVE to observe Thirsty Thursdays. On this particular Thursday, we found ourselves at The Far Bar. It's a pretty chill spot & it wasn't too crowded when we got here. Aside from ordering a round of drinks, we also ordered some food. If there's one thing you should know is that we both LOVE to eat. We both love to eat soo damn much that we work out... to eat out.

I love that this place is sort of hidden, nestled between 2 brick buildings. Just go allll the way down to quench your thirst. Anymore hidden & you would need some homeboy asking for the pass word to get in. And is it just me or do x-mas lights make everything 10x's better?

This place can definitely become a kick it spot!

    Your Homegirl,
    Violy

Dropped in here early one Friday night a few weeks back.
The place is really small and cozy
It was a bit cold and raining outside but since this place is long and narrow you would have never known.
Great atmosphere, stiff drinks, and a nice mix of people.
Not much more you can ask for is there?

Maybe it was because I was tipsy for the first time in months....but I fell a little in love with the Far Bar last month.

Date night.  It can be hard to find something new and fun to do for two old, tired, parents of young children.  So we hopped on the gold line and got off in Little Tokyo.  I had seen online that the Far Bar was hosting a beer tasting for Beer Week.  We were really just going to have beers but we decided to stay for food because it all looked good coming out of the kitchen.  We moseyed on up to the bar and grabbed two stools which karma had presented in front of us.

We had the shu mai and the ahi appetizers, both were yummy yummy.  Especially good with the cold beers that kept materializing in front of us.  then we got the short ribs and the roti pizzas which were "recommended" to go with the beers.  Everything was great here, from the food to the service to the ambiance.  The bartenders are very nice and accomodating and the whole place just stinks of cool downtown, hipsters.  I kind of like that because it's such a departure from my everyday life.

So thank you Far Bar for making date night something special!

One of the best clandestine bar environments in Los Angeles.

Towering atrium walls frame hovering violet skies, live music echo off secretive inner courtyards. Unpretentious and un-gimmicky.
You may lose where the entrance is. And in this place, that is a good thing...

Great bite sized menu. Oh, as far as Spirits, well, they are here, good not great, but who really cares; this place is for atmosphere. Jazz  nights are best... D.J. nights are not.
If its a weekend, you should call to reserve a table, or you'll be standing around for a very long time.

    Two words = Wasabi Fries.

    cozy, intimate, charming, purty =]

Great Japanese beer list. Wish they were a wee bit cheaper, if so I'd be more inclined to explore more of them.
But it's just an easy, relaxing bar to kick it. You walk through a narrow alley to see it open up into a high walled patio with lights strung across the opening. For some reason I always end up here at the end of the night for one last drink, and always run into friends doing the same. Definitely worth doing

Wohoo!!! This is a SUPER cute and cozy bar tucked away in the back of the building. To get there, you literally need to walk through a gap in the wall. Thankfully, there is an officer checking ID at night, and a sidewakl chalkboard pointing you in the right direction.

Their food is fusion style, but is totally legit in portions and flavor. For $5 getting a MASSIVE burger and fries during happy hour is a good deal. Especially with quality ingredients.

Wish I had found this place earlier. . . Thanks to Blair M. for introducing me to this place!

Located in an alleyway, is a bar lit up with dangling lights, and filled with both class and swagger.

Overall, one of the nicer bars without the nicer bars cost. Filled with a number of imported beers from asahi to Saporo, all for a reasonable amount. Also, the food is pretty well done from the koji truck like tacos to the awesome garlic fries.

Definitely, one of the best bars to hang around on a summer night.
