Review from Pegah Y.
Went to the Exchange recently and though I did like the atmosphere - very spacious and lively and full of sports games and good conversation, I thought the prices were a little bit ridiculous - I mean, $11 for quesadilla appetizers that weren't that big and weren't even that good??? That's pretty ridiculous. We were expecting maybe $6 or $7 at the most! I had to leave earlier than the rest of the party and I paid for my quesadilla but the rest of my party was later charged for it still, even though I had paid $11 already... Uh, not cool!
But in general this place is nice, their tater tots are awesome, and the service was good, and they are accommodating. I'll definitely be back. -

I went here with some friends before going to Constitution Hall hoping for some quick pub food and a few good drinks... What we got was slow, poor service, terrible mixed drinks, and less than impressive food. The menu could use a little more especially for being a sports bar. Over the span of an hour the atmosphere went from professional happy hour to a raging frat party, especially on the patio - I guess the bar is host to rec league drinking events. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all about the raging party but it shouldn't jeopardize the service and it definitely did.
On the positive note, they have an awesome beer menu and their drink prices seem fair for DC. And if you're just going to drink and watch the games they have a on of TVs throughout. -

Not impressed! Service was slow and they were not even busy. Took 45 minutes to bring out tater tots and 12 wings. When the food came it was way overcooked and dried out. I won't eat there again.

Some of the servers (Erik) are awesome, while others are rude. The place has improved since the renovations, during which they expanded the bar area and added more/ better TVs. The best part is the outdoor patio because they will let you play whatever game you want. Without this, it's a grimy bar with food that tastes like grease. I always make sure to eat at Cosi or Potbelly around the corner ahead of time.

Absolutely horrendous. We were tricked into coming to this bar 3 times because it sponsors our kickball league -- terrible mistake. The owner of this place is a complete d-bag who personally offended me and my friends twice. This guy thinks that he is THE s***... yeah, he's one of THOSE bar owners... too cool for school, the whole deal.
The bar itself is just awful. It's a terrible, awkward space. It has insufficient bathrooms. The "DJ" (if you can call him that) was by far the worst I'd ever heard at any bar in DC. ...but the worst part? This greedy loser sponsored ever rec sports league under the sun. Two kickball leagues, at least one softball league, all of which play at the same time. End result? Not everyone who's paying for drink specials at this bar can get in. Greedy greedy greedy.
I'll say one positive thing so you don't think I'm a troll: it is pretty cool that people can play flip cup. There.
Don't patronize this guy's business -- there are much better bars in the area. -

Let's just say when I saw some adults at a table here in suits I thought "What the hell are you doing here??"
Can someone explain to me why DC is packed with HUGE places that have no personality and seem devoted to maximum capacity? Two other places that fall into this category are Buffalo Billiards and Bar Louie; at least those places are clean and show that some effort went into creating an ambiance. Not so here.
I suppose the one positive I should be noting is 'At least they let my kickball league play flip-cup there". Well if I wasn't in the kickball league, if I was just another patron of the bar, that would pretty much make it the worst place ever...packing it with cup-flippers screaming their asses off. OK, I'm gonna go out on a limb and give it ONE STAR! When I started writing this, it was 2, but just writing the review has made me angry about this place! This is not a bar for mature people, it is a bar for adolescents. If you're a Frosh at GW then go nuts! This is the place for you! -
Review from Noel O.
Holy God, how have I not known about this place?? So I've passed by this place multiple times during the day when it may or may not be open, so there's never been any kind of incentive to go in. Now with that said, I started playing in a kickball league and this is our sponsoring bar, so of course we've got to check it out.
All I heard was $10 pitchers of Bud Light, so I wasn't too excited about how this was going to play out. But then I heard that the sole purpose of said pitchers was for an amazing and ever-so-simple game known as flip cup. Oh my! So countless pitchers later and meeting a whole bunch of new people, I was sold that this placed needed to preached about to the rest of the world. Our server was around often enough for us to order more pitcher when necessary, though the actual service of bringing the pitchers out sometimes lagged a little.
I was stunned to see World Bank types eating out on the patio when we arrived at around 7:30. I knew flip cup was coming, so I was hoping this group knew that they were about to get spilled on, though luckily they ate their food and got the crap out of there. It's amazing to see situations that one recognizes as a potential train wreck somehow fix themselves during the course of the evening. So come down to the Exchange if you want drink crappy beer; otherwise, stay away! -

Like Chloe F., the Exchange also shares a special place in my heart. I've been going here since we started a tradition of coming her after class in grad school. I've loved this place ever since.
I'll be honest, the recent remodeling put me off at first in a "this use to be MY bar - why didn't they ask me first" kind of way, but I've grown to appreciate it. What once was a beer pong playing, dark, diving DC bar, is now a slightly more classy sports pub. They lost the beautiful old wooden bar and replaced it with a nice slab of marble. Some of the old pissy staff remain, but most have been replaced with friendly professionals (more on this later in the review). You could say that the Exchange's face lift and progression from college bar to 30-somethings pub follows my own personal progression over these years in DC -- or -- you might think that's a bit too much for a Yelp review ... and I wouldn't blame you.
So, back to the Exchange. On my most recent visit, I received the best service I have ever had in Washington DC. Literally. The best. Our waitress was very attentive, but not "up our a$$." She was professional; was an expert on the menu. And, cute to boot. We were very happy.
On this occasion, I had my standard Miller Lights and Jim Beam shots, but also decided to try the slightly crispy chicken wings. At $8.95/pound, they're a bit expensive and for a wing connoisseur, these might disappoint (very little, if any, heat). For my stomach, which was, by then, already filled with beer and whiskey, they were perfect though.
The Exchange is the kind of bar that you can easily have a good time at. It's open space is conducive to conversation, they have a nice front patio, and a nice mix of clientele. I love this bar and I think you will too! -
Review from Liam D.
Washington, DC
This weekend being so glorious outside, some friends and I decided to go for a stroll through the city and find some place with a patio to sit back, relax, grab a bite and perhaps a few drinks. Naturally, every place we passed was packed, so we decided to head over to The Exchange Sports Saloon on 17th and G. For some reason, their massive patio was virtually empty... now I know why. As the old adage goes: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is...
We waited about 5 minutes for anyone to recognize that we'd sat down and then ordered a few drinks. The $5.50 price tag on their Margarita appealed to me, but I got what I paid for... one of the worst margarita's ever. The glass was all sticky on the outside and it was really just crappy mix w/ some tequila. Shoulda known better.
The menu didn't look terrible and we ordered some pretty tasty looking Artichoke Dip. There were a lot of Greek items, so I figured that must be their specialty. I ordered the chicken souvlaki sandwich. What'd I get? A plate w/ a pita on the bottom and some lettuce and chicken scattered throughout, along with some pretty terrible feta, a few onions, and a terrible tzatziki sauce. But again, who orders Greek food from a sports bar? Stupid, Liam, very stupid.
My buddy ordered an Italian Sub that literally looked like it had been purchased that morning at 7-Eleven, unrwapped, and thrown onto a plate. That or one of the overpriced sandwiches you get at the airport when you're in a rush.
After eating virtually all the lettuce, feta, and dry chicken off the plate, I wrapped a few french fries in my pita and a french fry souvlaki sandwich (I'm creative, I know).
It wasn't all bad though, we got a laugh out of the fact that the wait staff was completely impervious to the fact that we had stacks of pint glasses all over the place - and we weren't even drinking that many beers! First we asked for a pitcher of water, which came with 4 pint glasses. Then we each ordered 4 drinks - 4 more pint glasses. Then a couple buddies ordered refills on their Diet Coke's... and... you guessed it: more pint glasses. At one point, the manager was taking some of our dishes away and he picked up one of the glass tubes from our cigars and put it INTO a pint glass... and then left it there.
Once it got to 12 glasses on the table amongst the 4 of us, we decided we were going to keep ordering more water/Diet Coke to see how many we could stack before they actually cleared any away. Unfortunately, the manager saw me snap the photo below and instructed one of the busboys, who looked to me to be a day laborer hired for the afternoon, to remove some glasses. Nonetheless, at one point we had 4 pint glasses per man at our table. We had a good laugh.
The moral of the story here is even though you don't go to a shitty sports bar and expect a culinary masterpiece, you don't expect food to be this bad anywhere that commands $10/sandwich. They get points for having a big patio. That's about it. I can see why kickballers love this place for post-game pitchers, but as a place to eat I'd rather go to Quizno's, Cosi, or even the hot dog cart down the street. -

Decent place for drinks. I went with some friends from work. They have great outdoor seating. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The bartender even let us choose the music.

The Exchange has a really large sidewalk patio, which is nice as long as we're not having a heat-wave (it's been surprisingly comfortable both times we've been). They have good happy hour deals, serving mostly beer and pub food (wings, nachos, even tater tots), all of which are as tasty as you'd expect that kind of unhealthy food to be. It gets a little loud and crowded some nights, since this is one of the places dc kickball/softball teams come to play flip cup - so watch out for that!

If it were possible to give negative stars, I would.
Everything about this place is sloppy; the outside patio tables was a mess and no one was even out there eating. Waiting to be seated was a mess, two different people tried to seat us and then neither came back to take drink orders after we were told to "seat yourself, there's open tables all over." The waitstaff was sloppy; if you're going to have uniform of button down white shirts, tuck them in otherwise you look like a slob.
The food was overpriced and wasn't spectacular by any means. I ended up splitting a salad and an burger with my Mom. I figured by telling the waiter this it would mean an extra plate would arrive, or maybe he would split them for us. Not the case, and then when we asked the busboy for an extra plate it fell on deaf ears, and then we had to wait for our server to come back just to check in on us.
Moral of the story, sloppy exterior/interior, sloppy food, and worst of all sloppy service that is not worth the price. If they keep it up this place won't be around the next time we come to D.C. for a visit. -

Last season this was my kickball league's post-game bar. It was a step up from our last bar and I really enjoyed coming here. Playing flipcup outside on the sidewalk was really fun. I was looking forward to doing it again this summer.
However, the management decided to go behind our league's back and sign a deal with a different kickball league. FOR MONEY. Then he told our league we would not be welcome back. I've never heard of any complaints the place/neighbors have had against our league in particular.
So basically, the owner paid money to another kickball league for their business and then banned our kickball league that came for free. Since they obviously aren't concerned with making money or pleasing customers, I will never go back. -

Was here on a thursday. It was fun but craZy packed with kickball people. If I was on a team it probably woulda been great but I just hung out. Bartenders were pretty friendly. They let us stay until close/after because we werent causing a ruckus -- just hanging out and getting pitchers poured. Its a fairly large bar with a huge open area on the outside - I would definitely come back if I was still living in the DC area. Seems like a great bar to go out at in the early fall when its still nice out and not ridiculously humid.

I went here for the Yelp After Party. I didn't have any drinks (they did have Yuengling Draft - a must-have for "stereotypical Pennsylvanians"), but I ordered nachos. It was about $9, but the portion was humongous. I recommend splitting the nachos with at least two people. Curtis had the "Greek" Bruschetta. It was "interesting", "not bad", but it's not bruschetta. It's basically pita bread with toppings (green and red peppers, cucumber, olive oil, and feta cheese).
I really enjoyed our server. He was super nice and funny, and I think our food came out rather quickly for being a large group. When he told us that we could throw something at him to grab his attention, almost everyone at the table lifted up their glass, menu, or purse in anticipation. That made me giggle.
(Thanks Justin S. for being such a SWEETheart by buying all the women in the group red roses. Seriously, you rock.)
Btw, there's construction going on. If you can, ask for a table far from the noise. It's very disruptive. -

Came here for a Yelp After-Party, as organized by the fabulous (and perfectly dressed/coiffed) Kathleen M. We were a decent sized group, and as such I can't call our experience here "normal". But dang, I was impressed with the service we received!
First we were charmed by our amazingly energetic and charismatic waiter, Ahmad. (I hope I'm close to spelling that correctly!). As Jade mentions, there was ongoing construction, at 9:00 pm!?! One of our group members really could not take the noise, so she and I moved to a different room. We were eventually joined by the rest of the Yelpers who had their fill of jackhammering too.
Throughout this, Ahmad was understanding and accommodating, and managed to keep us smiling and laughing. The food and drink orders came out fast and furious. It was really great that none of the staff resented our boisterousness, or our mass relocation.
Mr. Marinakos, the owner, came up to us later in the evening to apologize about the construction, and to offer anything he could to make us happy. He knew we were Yelpers, and that's cool, he was looking after us. Ahmad, though, bounced up to us after that and said "I just found out who you guys were!" Turns out that his exemplary service before that point was perfectly natural, and I thought that was REALLY cool.
Ahmad set our group up on a bar TV with Guitar Hero II while he bussed the tables. I thought that was a fine time to slip out and go home. Thanks, Exchange! -

I haven't been here, but I just tried to reserve space for a private party and the chick on the phone was a total BI*#H! I asked about their roof and she said with a patronizing tone "Ummm you don't want that honey, it's $2,000." Then she acted like it was completely inappropriate for me to ask about reserving private space to begin with. She said "We're going to have to call you back. I have no idea if we have space for Friday. It says in the book here that you have to reserve it by Tuesday." I asked "So does this mean it's not available?" And she said "It's Wed isn't it?"
My company was going to spend a bunch of money for a happy hour. Too bad, Exchange. We'll easily find something better. -

Oh, the Exchange. There really aren't too many undergrad memories I have that don't involve the Exchange. On weekend nights, this is the hotspot for drunk under-21 GW kids using their fake IDs. On the weekends, it is 18+ but at least when I was under 21, they were super-easy with fakes. You could hand them a piece of paper with "I am 21" written on it and they'd let you in.
Anyway, when there's not construction, this is actually a pretty fun place for a happy hour. Flip cup and beer pong tables out on the patio, and lots of seating outside can make for a lovely post-work drink. If you're over the age of 22, skip it on the weekends, but enjoy during weekday evenings.Listed in: Foggy Bottom, Foggy Memories

Oooh how much time have I wasted here? A lot. Probably has something to do with kickball. And I wouldn't say my time was "wasted" by any means since most of it was in the pursuit of flip cup glory.
So Sundays used to be the day I would socialize my afternoons/evenings away at the Exchange once I switched to a kickball division that went there instead of Kellys Irish Times. I have sadly had to give up this passtime due to my continuing education pursuits. You can always be guaranteed a rowdy good time here if you show up on a Sunday afternoon during warm weather months.
The prices are decent, the beer selection is not bad, the food... eh, not the best but we'll let that slide since they're so accepting of the rowdiness. For 3-1/2 years I've been saying I need to go there for lunch one day since it's in the neighborhood of my office but I just can't seem to bring myself to do it, something just seems wrong to me about that proposition because it would change my outlook on the place completely. It's the closest bar to the White House and it's Metro accessible and for what it's worth, I have to say when it's warm it seems to be a pretty jumping post-work happy hour place when not inundated with kickballers. George, the owner, is a good guy, he'll take care of whatever you need and even pull out a hose to soak down your team after 2 hours on the monument fields in 95-degree weather, what more can you ask for? -

Came here with a group for a quick drink before seeing a show at the DAR. I'm sure the fact that the Shins were playing right down the street changed the crowd a bit, but it still seemed like a fun place to hang out and drink a beer or two.
When we first got there the bar was very crowded and they only had one stressed out bartender. Poor thing. Eventually another guy came to help her and things got much better from there. I definitely don't think they were expecting the crowds. Bar food was okay, nothing to write home about, but they've got Stella on tap, which always lets me leave a place in good spirits. Looked like the happy hour specials were pretty decent, and its an incredible location (right next to the OEB and the Corcoran) for a perfect spring/summer evening. -

The exchange holds a special place in my heart...
Back in the day, friends and I would gather at the Exchange for Miller Lites and Jim Beam shots....classy, eh? But let me tell you something, when you are throwin em back like tomorrow is the beginning of prohibition, a handful of free peanuts to snack on is the perfect treat.
Recently, we have all come to grow and love the little Armenian server. Sure, he didn't know what Jim Beam was the first time we asked, but he is super pleasant and attentive and you can tell he is working hard. We've had various other servers who are friendly and laugh at us as we drink our way into oblivion.
But what about the food? Its good bar food. The tuna melt, beleive it or not, is fantastic, the gyro is decent and they have great Burgers.
Patrons beware....! During the time when classes are in, Friday nights can tend to become a GW Frat scene....thats when we leave and head to Recessions.
Also, a great outdoor seating area in the warmer months...i dont know if they have a limit on space because they seem to bust out more tables for more people! -

I was walking away from my favorite coffee place in the whole city (Juan Valdez cafe) with a friend towards downtown. Suddenly I hear my nickname being yelled from somewhere (there aren't a whole lot of Dino's out there), and a friend who works at the Treasury Department was having an after-work happy hour on the patio here. Figuring "what the hell," we decided to join him.
That was a mistake.
The patio here feels like you're seated underneath a construction site. The scaffolding holding things up certainly doesn't add to the ambiance. That'd be all well and good if it didn't also prevent the wait staff from seeing you. We waited 30+ minutes to even place an order for two beers and a quesadilla. When it took another 20 to get those out to us, I asked that the quesadilla come out in a to-go box and for the check, as I had places to be. Another 30 minutes later, I was finally navigating through the scaffold jungle on my wait out. Awful service and a seriously bad quesadilla, to boot. -

Any bar that lets us play flip cup is a winner in my book!
This is the bar we go to after kickball games. The food's not that great. Pitchers are like $9 or $10 a piece, even for miller lite or bud light. But the fact that the staff sets up rows and rows of tables (for flip cup) outside on their patio in anticipation of post-kickball game debauchery... we like it. And we come back each and every week we have a game. -

This place has an interesting history, to say the least. From what the owner (or manager, but I think it was the owner) once told me this place has a reputation because it used to double as a swingers club on Saturday nights. During some time frame the place wasn't making enough money so they had to throw these swinger parties in order to stay afloat. What I think is great about this is the fact that you can walk out the front door, trip and hit your forehead on the Old Executive Office Building. Take a few more steps and you'll be stumbling into the gates of the White House. Essentially what the guy told me is that in the past this place used to have swingers parties featuring a bunch of VIP's from the federal government. If the place weren't such a dive I wouldn't think it was nearly as scandalous, but it's a sports bar with a men's bathroom the size of a fold up chair.
During the spring and summer you'll find that a lot of people playing kickball and softball frequent this place for their post game happy hours. It has a huge outdoor seating area and hordes of people will lineup on either side of the long tables to play the biggest games of flip cup this city has ever seen. -

I'm so late on this review. Came here for the yelp after party. Well Atif the waiter was awesome. He took care of 20 people with ease. Drinks and food orders came out quickly.
This actually isn't my normal type of bar so it isn't a place I would probably return. I don't frequent large bars however it was so laid back with good service I just might. It's not warm and cozy nor is it a total dive it's somewhere in the middle. I loved that they had guitar hero!
There is construction going on so ask for a table far away from the pound. -

I came here to hit a happy hour before heading to DAR for a concert. i was hoping for a younger crowd but it was mostly people in the 30s-40s range having a few too many after work. however, the miniburgers were good and came out fast and the bartender was very friendly.
since there's not much around DAR in terms of bars i'd come here again before a show but probably not otherwise. -

I have never had the food here but frequent it throughout my nights as an undergraduate. George Washington University is only a hop skip and jump away so there are many fraternity sponsored events here. If you aren't into slutty freshman wearing basically nothing, then I would advise you avoid this place on a thursday or friday night.
But , if your underage, this is a great place to go, they tend to get strict every once in a while, but they serve pitchers and have tables in the back (where beer pong is allowed) so have one your friends with a fake id buy a pitcher and sneak drinks whenever you get a chance.
If your older and living in DC and want to relive your college days I suggest going here and playing some pong... but be careful it gets pretty competetive as the frat boys get into it... -

It's not the food or the prices or the cleanliness of this place that makes me love it so much...it's mostly the memories. It was an after work bar and a kickball bar for me and it will always be a-ok in my book. Total dive...sometimes questionable menu (I think they had crab balls on there at once?? for real?) and it's the opposite of cheap. The onion rings and chicken tenders are fabulous around 10pm or after a pitcher (or 5) of beer with friends...whichever comes first. Not for the 'i use anti-bac gel on everything' or dining crowd.

Well, my colleagues and I needed a place to fuel up that was close to the White House. It was Happy Hour, so why not some wings and such at a bar! Just a step away from the White House is the Xchange Bar.
It labels itself as a sports bar, but I think the management believes a couple TVs tuned to ESPN make it a sports bar. This place AIN'T a sports bar. In the main dining room, there are two TVs about 10 feet off the floor, so unless you are all the way across the room, you can't even see them. One TV in another room was tuned to CNN. CNN in a sports bar?! Plus, there was hardly any sports paraphernalia on the walls. No Washington sports photos, programs, jerseys...WTF?! It reminded me of a hotel conference room.
The food was okay. WAY over-fried, but not worse than average. Entrees were about $10.
If a place is as empty as this during every Happy Hour, I'd guess the Xchange Sports Saloon ain't gonna be around for much longer. (See photo below) -

Cannot understand with so many good places close by, this place draws quite a crowd. Went there a few times and each time the food served was a major disappointment. The place is unhygenic - the least they can do is to serve in clean glasses - it is a major turn-off. The service is also pathetic as the staff appear completely uninterested in providing even a basic level of service. As I said before, there are a lot of places to go to nearby which are much better so suggest you aviod this place at all costs.

Go for the atmosphere - which is laid-back cool - not the food...well, unless you have a knack for the ultimate bar food: greasy, under-seasoned, great-with-pitchers-of-beer fare. Nevertheless, the convenient location (half a black from the white house) and expansive outdoor seating area makes DC's oldest sports saloon a lively post-work or softball game hangout. If anything, grab a beer, order the chicken nachos, and unwind...

This is a fantastic place to marinate your grey cells before the weekend. I haven't been there during week nights and weekends - when I presume the frat boys and other rich fucktards from GWU come to make fools of themselves. On friday afternoons the place has a relaxed vibe. The decent outdoor seating allows one to enjoy the pleasant weather and down a few cold ones.

Hugeeee outdoor area is really nice for kickball flippy cup, manyyy tv's inside is great for Colts games and Redwings games. Service staff seems great, and the food has never let me down. Just typical good ol bar food. Love the outdoor dancing (not sure if it's meant to be that way but I love to dance so my friends and I make it that way haha), good music outside and a jukebox inside.

Two and a half stars. A perfectly servicable saloon in a great location near DAR Constitution Hall, the White House and the World Bank, the Saloon has a somewhat storied history. It was founded in 1970 by Jim Kimsey who later went on to co-found AOL. It's location near the Mall and George Washington University and ample outdoor seating means that it often fills up with sports teams and students. The draft beer selection is pretty pedestrian, but they do serve pitchers. It's best as a place to stop in for a burger and a beer at lunchtime or happy hour if you happen to find yourself in that neck of the woods.

The Exchange is a fantastic bar! The NAKID Kickball and Social Club uses it as their winter indoor sponsor bar and the bar is always well managed. Getting pitchers of beer or your food is quick and the service is friendly.
