Love my Tybee Island.  Really nice beach area which is great for the family. The under currents can be rough at times. This summer a alligator was found twice coming up on the beach (very unusual), but worth mentioning if your freaked by creatures from below.
The meter maids work hard so make sure you keep a tab on the meter if that's how you park.  But the fines are cheap. :)
I really love the area. Great views, beautiful sand/beaches, and ocean.
Not overly developed.

This place is ok, if you want to pay $ 10 dollars or more for parking
There is no public bathrooms, they have public showers But no water
And no dogs allowed, and no garbage can near, so expect garbage at the beach
I recoment look other beaches

We didn't go in with high expectations (beautiful sandy beaches with crystal clear blue water, quaint shops lining the beach) so we weren't really disappointed.  Tybee Island is what I expected - a kitschy fun island  with a a main road lined with seafood restaurants, overpriced parking and stores selling knick-knacks.

The beach itself was decent - water was warm with small waves and the beach itself was full of people but not overcrowded.   It seems to be a family friendly beach, not the kind of place that becomes over run with drunk college students.

We paid $10 for parking in a private lot (for the whole day) rather than wasting an hour or two looking for parking.  There's a few private lots if you can't find street parking.   We also drove to the lighthouse to take a peek and a picture (mom loves lighthouses).

On busy weekends just expect to sit in traffic for a while - it was bumper to bumper traffic for about an hour driving onto Tybee Island.

After deciding that we needed to go to the beach this summer, I busted out the google maps. It seemed that Tybee Island was the closest beach to the Atlanta area (where we live). Minimizing driving time was key to our planning. This turned out to be smart, since our kids were grumpy with a capital G for a lot of the drive. Good times.

Tybee is nothing like its other barrier island neighbors. Hilton Head, St Simons,  Jekyll, Amelia, and Kiawah all have that swank (like Toby V was talking about). I don't see that at all with Tybee. There are zero resorts here. No golf courses. No fine dining for the most part.

Tybee is an older town and is small. I mostly get a redneck vibe about this place. The businesses, shops and restaurants all seem old and not kept up. Older buildings, leaky roofs, smelly, that kind of thing. We rented a condo that was in pretty good shape, but I've heard horror stories from other condos on the island.

Yet even with this, it is still a decent place to take a family. It is quiet and the beaches are decent with smaller waves. It is neat to watch the ships coming and going from the port of Savannah. They sail right by the beach. The crowds were small when we visited mid-week in June. The prices at restaurants are reasonable, just don't have high expectations. The lighthouse adds a bit of charm, and the forts a touch of history.

All in all, it has been a nice place to visit. Just don't expect glitz and glamor.

" While Tybee is a resort complete with a full range of restaurants, modern hotels, motels, luxurious condominiums, and quaint inns and cottages, it's also a residential area stocked with its share of colorful characters. It's an atmosphere considerably more laid-back than that of glitzier, larger beach towns to the north and south."

This quote comes directly from the Tybee island website.  Well, today we decided to visit what we expected to be a quaint little island and beach community.  It was not quite what we expected.

It was more of a cross of Myrtle Beach and Daytona Beach, and while those places are fun, it was not quite what we were looking for.  It could be a fun place for you, especially if you are looking for beach shops selling t-shirts and lots of questionable beachside bars, but I suggest you stay in Savannah.

A study in contrasts, just like most places.  Some things really swank, some things kinda skank.  If you go there regularly, I'm sure it's easy to frequent what you really like and avoid what you don't.  Beaches were beautiful.  Fantastic nature on and surrounding the island.  I would definitely go back if I were in the Savannah area again.  We planned a group trip for 8 of us, one of whom lives in Atlanta and the rest of us in California.  If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing - we had an awesome week.  As an aficionado of beach towns and of local flavor I definitely recommend it, just be prepared for lowbrow and highbrow.

We had fun - we just went for the day and the beach was nice.  There are lots of shops and restaurants.  The beach is not as wide as the beaches on Hilton Head but they weren't as hard-packed.... translation:  the kids could build stuff in the sand easier.

I just moved east after living in Southern California for 15 years, so I missed the ocean terribly. I was in Atlanta for business and spent a few days in Savannah on the back end. I knew being that close to the beach I had to go. We opted for Tybee since it was so close. I had no expectations, I just wanted my feet to hit sand so I could see, smell and hear the ocean. I was not disappointed. After years in the shi-shi beaches of So. Cal I loved Tybee. It's low-key, not pretentious, full of families and local flavor. My favorite part were the swings on the beach. I sat there for a few hours just reading and listening to the ocean. Tybee Island is not a resort town. It's local businesses and some are run down, some are brand new, some are great, some are not. Can't expect the Hilton hawaiian village but there are lots of great places to go, things to do and relaxing to be done by the water.
