When I was researching a trip upstate, I emailed several campgrounds/cabin locations, but got the quickest and most comprehensive reply from Elms owner Chandler Atkins. The price was right, and the distance was doable (about 4 hours from midtown).
Chandler suggested cabin #10 for my husband and me, and also mentioned we'd get a discount for staying more than 3 nights since the late September trip was after their high season. Bonus!
The cabin itself was tiny, maybe 400 sq. ft., but it was clean and bright and comfortable. The bedroom had cable tv, a queen bed and ample extra blankets & pillows; the bathroom was miniscule but functional; and a fold-out futon shared the main space with a galley kitchen stocked with dishes and cookware.
Mark and I enjoyed the fresh morning air from our screened-in porch about 200 feet from Lake Luzerne's shore. At night we cooked up burgers on the outside grill mounted literally steps from the porch (there's a grocery store one mile down the road for supplies), and took full advantage of the campfire pits located all around the property. I sat for hours in front of the crackling embers, completely hypnotized by its soothing warmth and the flickering light.
For those of us who live on a budget, the Elms is a wonderful little oasis. It's family-run, and the family takes care of you like you're one of their own. Come here for a stress-free getaway and I promise you will feel rested when you head back to your crazy life!
