Review from Devin L.
So another World Cup adventure...(yawn). Actually it was a good game Germany for 3rd place at a German place.
I actually went to the Quelle which is the bar outside. It is a nice nice bar with a good selection of German beers (Hofbrau Munich nice). We had the handmade pretzels which would have been better without all of the butter. The German Wiener was really good (no snickering). The burgers looked fantastic my friend had an awesome looking one. My g/f had the fish and chips which looked delicious and weren't ridiculously large.
My only complaint was no credit cards.....it's 2010 man I don't have cash. -

I'm reviewing the Quelle, the outside bar at the Brauhaus. I wanted this place to be a lot better than it was because the name of the place is just so fun to say.
However, for a "Brauhaus", their selection of german beers is minimal and diverse (aka non mainstream beer I can already find elsewhere). I wanted to find some better items on their menu.
Did you know their kitchen is shared with the actual restaurant?
Did you also know that you can only get like 8 things to eat at the bar even though the kitchen is the same? I definitely would have spent more money on food (and likely beer as well) if they had better food available outside.
Aside from the waitresses, who were pretty friendly and extremely attentive, there wasn't much to write home about with this place and I don't see myself returning in the future. -

We decided to head here for a change of pace and get some German food. Entering the restaurant was a bit awkward because you have to walk through the bar to get to the host. Decor was extremely outdated. Menu was interested because of the German selections but the food was somewhat underwhelming. Homemade pretzels were the highlight of the meal. Glad we went though.

Do yourself a favor and skip this place that should have been closed down years ago. Less than average food that's way overpriced. There's plenty more restaurants on LBI to choose from than this relic.

Apparently the "authentic German pretzels" are what makes this restaurant so brilliant. REALLY?? pretzels?
The Brauhaus has a beautiful view while you eat and is the best part of this establishment. We ordered a cheese and meat appetizer and it came out with a plate full (the way granny would host during her bingo events) of meats and cheeses with a toothpick in each. There weren't any spreads or crackers, just meat and cheddar cheese. Hmmm, okay well my fridge is stocked and I doubt I'm touching that mess.
The Polka Dot Reisling wine was on point with my lobster bisque soup. If I didn't want to embarrass my company I'd kill a bottle of that and then take a cozy little nap.
All jokes aside, the food isn't THAT magnificent and for as pricey as it was you could easily go to an even better seafood or German food elsewhere. It was sad and disappointing. -

This is more of a review of the Quelle, the outside deck of the Dutchmans. Ya know I used to love this place. You could pull the skis up to the docks for a cold Weiss or Dab ( you still can ) but for some reason they changed the menu or at least how they make things. I would always get the buffalo shrimp...mmm mmm mmm but recently they changed the sauce and added a lot of cumin to it. No sir I don't like it. I don't like it one bit. The oysters were very good and they added grouper which is my very bestest favorite fish (I know bestest yeah yeah). Remember it is cash only and it ain't cheap. I still give it a three star because after sucking down salt spray at 70mph for hours on end a cold one is very nice..............

I don't know how the bar is at Dutchman's, but my family and I went to The Dutchman's Brauhaus while on vacation at Long Beach Island and we had a terrible experience. I honestly don't even know where to begin.
The menu is very limited, even with their German food selections. Four members of my family ordered a pork dish and all four of them said the pork was tough and difficult to eat, not tender like pork should be. The mashed potatoes that came on the side of the dish tasted like instant mashed potatoes out of a box, not fresh ones. For $24 a plate, you can imagine my family's disappointment. Additionally, each person who ordered Blue Cheese dressing for their salads that came with the entrees was surprised with a charge of (about) $1.25 per salad for the dressing, which isn't mentioned on the menu ANYWHERE, nor did the waitress mention it when she took our orders.
My sister ordered a Caesar salad that was equivalent in quality to a bagged Caesar salad mix you would pick up at the food store, and was charged $9 for it. I ordered a beef stew which was decent, but not the best thing I've ever ate and not worth the $20 it cost. Not to mention that it was cold when it arrived because our waitress brought out half the food, disappeared for 5 minutes, then came back with the rest.
Also, for the price of the food, the restaurant's ambiance does not match at all. The dips and spreads were served in plastic souffle cups that my mom uses to serve elementary school children in her kitchen. There were paper placemats at every place instead of a nice cloth. For $20-40 a person, you'd expect something a little nicer...at least I do.
Our waitress rarely checked on us except to fill up our water glasses. When my family expressed disappointments in the food to the staff, the waitress and manager were both very reluctant to do anything to make up for it and held us up almost 30 minutes arguing with my mom about how the restaurant has been around for 40 years. It doesn't matter how long your restaurant has been open, just make good food and when a customer complains, apologize and try to make it up to them, which the staff at Dutchman's did not do.
For the amount of money you can spend on mediocre German food at Dutchman's, you can go to a nice restaurant in Manahawkin or Long Beach Island and get a delicious meal with a friendly waitstaff. -

Always a good place to eat, new menu is great and affordable. They also cater parties, weddings, etc. Good prices, I'm having my reception here in September. Dave is the new person in charge and he has a lot of good ideas to keep this place alive.

The Quelle is a great place to grab a beer, or two or three...and maybe a shot...or two...before you head out anywhere else. (Although I usually go to the Quelle with the intentions of going elsewhere after a couple beers, I usually end up staying all night for reasons stated above and for the awesome staff)
The bartenders are wonderful. Mikey will always take care of you no matter what you need. It's a smaller bar, so everyone seems to know everyone else, and if they don't, they'll get to know everyone there. Lots of locals hang here.
The atmosphere is great: the bar is outdoors and overlooks the bay. The beer selection is great. You can drive a boat or a wave runner up to it, that's pretty sweet.
I've eaten at Dutchman's once or twice before. The place itself is a bit dingy, but overall the food is pretty decent. -

The Dutchman's Brauhaus is really two establishments: the German-themed Brauhaus and the outdoor bar/restaurant The Quelle. They share the same kitchen and view.
Brauhaus: good German food, good selection of German beers on tap, attentive bartenders, good service, and shares the same view (inside looking out) as the Quelle. Older, more reserved dining crowd. And as noted by Ashley R., looks a dingy at times.
Quelle: outdoor bar/restaurant with a smaller selection of food as the Brauhuas - clams on the 1/2-shell are great, and the same great knockwurts and bratwurst from the main restaurant are here. What really sets the Quelle apart is its location and the bar staff which is attentive, informative and funny - everything you want in a bartender. Sit and have a beer or two, watch the waverunners and boats, and more than a few hours will go by -

I was just at Dutchman's for the first time since probably 1988, when I was a kid and ate here with my parents. I couldn't remember anything about this place from my first visit, except the fact that you can't miss it on the left hand side before you drive over the bridge onto Long Beach Island.
This time I stopped in to meet some peeps for Happy Hour on my way (off the island) back home. They have a bunch of seating inside for lunch/dinner and a full bar. Outside, however, is where it's at - another bar and some more tables, but now you're right on the bay, feelin the breeze, and chugging something German. Ok, so how about I get to the beer already - what's on tap? Well, they have Dortmunder Light and Dark, Paulaner Weiss, Amstel Light, Smithwicks, Harp and I think there might be one or two others that I can't remember. Bottles include: Hacker Pschorr Weiss, DAB, Warsteiner, Pilsner Urquell, St Pauli Girl, Fosters, and some of the usuals.
I can't speak for the food, as I didn't eat, but my friends were sucking down some oysters and clams on the 1/2 shell, and I saw a bunch of people chomping down on some good ole Wiener/Jager Schnitzel and Knockwurst/Bratwurst. Check it out for yourself - if you're not into the food, I promise you'll be into the beer. -

The beauty of The Quelle is truly it's location over looking the bay just of the main land of Long Beach Island, NJ. The food can range from oysters, to cold fried chicken, authentic German pretzels, jumbo shrimp to regular bar food and drinks. People can come by boat, jet ski or by car. It really is refreshing sitting out overlooking the bay. The only downfall is the wait help are not so reliable. On two out of three visits we had A1 service. Service, if you hit it right not so bad. Food, good. View=priceless!

My experience at this establishment atmosphere only!!!!
the drinks were over priced, the bar food was not up to par with the rest of the island, and the service was extremely slow!! Add a happy hour, with decent bar food. tuckers does it right!! -

Seafood here is really subpar, and you pay quite a penny for it, too -- between $20 and $35 per entree. Bland and overcooked. Scallops were chewy and praprika was the only "seasoning" on the whole dish of shrimp, scallops, and flounder. the beer selection was great and the service was very cheery and thoughtful. However, the chef was quite rude and refused to make a simple substitution. We asked if we could have french fries instead of rice and that we would gladly pay for the price difference, but the waitress came back saying the chef refused. I can understand that if you're a brilliant chef and your meal ends up being amazing, but I left not able to eat most of the things on my plate, including the mushy rice. The lobster bisque was overcooked and separated. Overall, I'd suggest going if you're there solely to have a beer at the bar, but the food was way overpriced for the poor quality meals.

Too bad that The Dutchman is in a downward spiral. One reviewer above mentioned the 'chef' would not sustitute fries for the rice. They probably don't have a 'chef'; cheaper to let the GM do the ordering and make up the menu. Went by boat a few weeks ago (Sunny saturday 90 degrees, sat outside), for a snack with teens in tow. We were there for the setting; not looking for gourmet. Guzzled down some paper cup iced teas. Young server was sharp enough to mention that it was not a bottomless cup. That set the tone! My son got grilled chix sandwich. "You want lettuce and tomato?" Of course we were charged extra for it. The chicken was a processed, pre-cooked item with the grill marks on it. I sell food - I know. My wings were actually pretty good, but way too expensive for a small portion. Cold fried chicken sounded good on a hot day - it arrived hot out of the fryer. Free salsa and chips on the table were right off the shelf. I wish the kitchen would at least make an effort, then we'd be back. Ownership should seek out a chef w/ a solid background to truly take over this kitchen.
