My boyfriend and I stopped in here after eating at Johnny's Half Shell down the street for his birthday.  Thankfully, the waiter at the Half Shell gave us a good tip and we really enjoyed our stop in the Dubliner.

The area with live music is really crowded and REALLY loud when the musicians are playing.  There is another bar in the next room back that had much faster service, and it was quiet enough that we could talk without yelling at each other.  The bartender was pretty quick to get us drinks, we enjoyed some good Irish beer and cider, and had no problems with the rowdy crowd you typically come across next door at Irish Times.

If you're looking to get smashed and act like a fool, go next door.  For the crowd that wants to enjoy good drinks, good music, and good conversation - The Dubliner is a great option!  It gets 4 stars because a place would have to BLOW me away to get 5 - but it's a place I would definitely return to.

Between the two Irish pubs, the Dubliner is definitely the place to go.  Good music, less college kids, better food (great Shepard's pie) and decent brew.  The only downside is that it is almost always packed.  And service (the food kind especially), after your food is delivered is nearly non-existant.

That said though, its a great time, even without more than a beer or two, especially when surrounded by friends you love and people that make life special.

SO, I work at the NY Ave metro stop and for the last month or so my manager wanted to invite me and the rest of the team out for lunch. After a quick yelp search of places within a walkable distance we decided to pick the dubliner.
For some reason we never thought of calling in and reserving a table for 6 but instead went there around 12 and asked how long it would take for us to be seated. The guy at the door with his cute accent said sth about 10 mins. That doesn't sound so bad we said and waited around the door. Over the course of the next 40 mins we saw groups of people walking in and asking the exact same question and I swear his answer alternated btw either 10 or 25 mins haha that's it.
Anyways, 40 mins later we were seated and ordered our food which came out faster than expected thank Good. My fish sandwich tasted good and the portion was definitely fulfilling. Next time I'll just make sure I'll come with a smaller group or maybe try calling in and putting down a name.

I came here with the tip of there being good fish and chips, which was correct. This was some wonderfully tasty large pieces of fish with a nice beer batter breading and some good 'chips' to go along. Bonus on having malt vinegar brought to the table without having to ask and for having tarter sauce, as well.

The big downside to the meal was the slice of apple pie I ordered to go. After a long day I was looking forward to enjoying said pie in my hotel room. The slices of apple in the pie still had the core on them, making for one miserable late night treat.

Lesson: stick with dinner, go elsewhere for dessert.

The tilapia special is saturated with butter...

Many menu options to chose from at this Irish pub, steps from Union Station. You have typical Irish fare, as well as non.

The atmosphere is lively, and the seating is a tad crowded, so I could see it getting loud on St. Patty's day, or a weekend night.

The food was lousy. Sorry, Dub's. Maybe next time I'd choose the Shepard's pie, or even old standby-fish & chips. But, I HIGHLY doubt I'll be back.

Your basic pub with the standard assortment of brews and booze, along with a pretty good menu.

Very crowded and loud.  Packed with people, standing room only, every table jammed with people.  In the days of smoking it would have been impossible to breathe.

I did appreciate the effort of the wait staff and bar tenders to accommodate the mob.  They kept up and rolled with the flow of humanity.

Since we stayed at the hotel we did have breakfast and it was pretty good, esp with slices of corned beef and a decent menu.  Prices were not outrageous like many other DC establishments.

Don't even think of coming here with a group unless you are really early and can claim table space.  It is hard enough as a couple to find a spot after 6pm.

On the plus side, this place is very close to Union Station. That's something, right? With the Capital Brew Pub gone from that area, I needed some place to meet up with a local friend. We arrived at 5:30 on a Wednesday and got seated quickly. Our server was attentive; that's another plus. And the place was cozy and decked out for Christmas, so it had a nice atmosphere.

I tried the Dubliner Amber Ale on draft. Sadly, it had that sour taste indicative of dirty tap lines. I tried the fish & chips. Another downer. Just bland. My friend had the Irish stew. He didn't complain, but neither did he rave, so I guess it was OK. My next beer was a Fat Tire in a bottle. Much better. As we left, close to 7:00, people were standing near the entrance, waiting for a table.

So overall, not great but convenient to the train station.

We stopped in to get dinner and some drinks before going to a show. It was pretty packed and what appeared to be a wedding was going on in the back room.  I had a chicken sandwich with provolone and you wouldn't  think I would have much to rave about but you are wrong.  It came on a kaiser bun and had two huge slices of succulent cooked chicken breast with a light dash of pepper.  It came with some awesome steak fries(my favorite kind).  I thought the meal was excellently priced for the area and the quality.

We were looking for Capital Brewery and found out it had moved, so not wanting to walk forever we decided to try The Dubliner.

The service was very good!  Attentive wait staff and friendly hostess made the service aspect outstanding.

As far as the food, it had mixed reviews at our table.  I had the (potato) soup and sandwich plate. The chicken on the sandwich was neither cold or warm and that kinda freaked me out.  The potato soup was very blah.  We also had the chicken breast meal (son loved it), the rueben sandwich (hubby found just so so) and the veggie beef soup (father-in-law said it was good.)

All in all, I'd say the service saved this place from being a 2 star review.

I went to the Dubliner for a bite to eat with my grandma while she was in town. She loved her Corned Beef sandwich and enjoyed it with Gulden's spicy mustard. I ordered a Philly Cheese Steak, which was DELICIOUS! Probably the best cheese steak I've had. And that's saying a lot considering I've eaten a cheese steak from Philly. The noise level was a little loud considering I was with my grandma and had to yell extra loud for her to hear me. But it is a pub, so it was expected. Great experience at the Dubliner! I would definitely go out of my way to eat here again!

    The good:

    1) The food (fish n' chips and potato skins, along with some nicer dishes--I once had sea scallops that were lovely)
    2) Live music.
    3) Beer.
    4) The stained glass designs in the door.
    5) Waiters hired because they have accents and sassy British senses of humor.
    6) It's a freakin' pub.  What's not to love?

    The bad:

    1) The interns/entry-level Hill staff that swarm the place after 5.  Give me a break and spare me the uppity "How awesome am I because I work for X Y and Z" prattle at the bar...

Staff at the nearby Hyatt recommended this as a dinner spot. I'd probably actually give it more of a 3.5 or 4, but they had some really obnoxious, disruptive patrons that made the first half of our meal pretty miserable. These pretentious self-important fools thought they should be allowed to dominate multiple tables in the back while not ordering food or drinks, and they didn't see any problem yelling from table to table. So when the hostess seated us, a paying party of 5 at one of their squatting spots, they were peeved and kept sending death stares at us. Rather than asking them to leave, staff seems to have had a practice of waiting for someone to leave for the bathroom or to make a phone call and then slip an unsuspecting party at the table in their place. Control your patrons better and you'd get more stars.

As for food, I had the reuben sandwich, and there was a great balance between the corned beef, cheese, bread, and sauce. Sometimes one ingredient or another can overpower that sandwich, but it was great. Husband liked his hot wings, and my daughter was happy with the fish and chips. And that half and half beer went down great after a long hot and humid DC summer day!

A friend suggested we meet here for lunch; I was dubious about the hot weather, traffic and what the parking near Capitol Hill might be like but it turned out to be a fantastic day, easy to get to (thanks to the doorman at the Watergate, where I had taken a wrong turn), and plenty of spaces all around. The pub part was all dark oak; we were seated in the restaurant area near the patio entrance, so we enjoyed sunny, air-conditioned al fresco dining if there's such a thing.

The menu was extensive, with both the usual and Irish fare; I didn't really peruse much as I knew the thing to get would necessitate corned beef in it. I ordered the grilled Reuben, which was delicious and a perfect balance of fillings atop a flavorful rye bread. I'm picky about meat-cheese-dressing ratios and always suspicious of overly-buttery food; my sandwich was neither greasy nor overly cheesy. To my delight, my fries were steak-cut and came with a bottle of malt vinegar without my asking. My friend had the fish sandwich, which was basically a fillet of cod, fish shape intact, lightly breaded atop a sub roll. His fries were a petite crinkle-cut, which amused me. Service was fast, friendly and attentive--they kept my unsweetened iced tea filled and icy.

Side note: Other reviewers mention that lunch prices are high. This is true: most lunch entrees are in the $14-18 range - yes, even for pedestrian fare such as a burger. What's also true is this is Washington, DC and next to the Capitol: I'm sure the lunchtime crowd is willing to pay the "government rate" (read: your tax dollars at work), which never seems to be a discounted one. Go a mile or two in either direction and you'll definitely see the difference this makes.

My husband and I were in town last week for a wedding and stayed at the Phoenix Park hotel, so we ate a number of our meals at The Dubliner.  Our first lunch experience was a draw because I ordered the Shepherd's pie and loved it, while my husband ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich and really didn't care for it at all.  He said the sandwich was too greasy.  We went there later in the evening for dinner and drinks, and we were so dismayed by the attitude of the hostess! She had a scowl on her face when we walked up to her, didn't say a word as she walked us to our table, then virtually THREW our menus down on the table and walked away! I have never met a hostess that rude -- EVER! If we hadn't already made plans on meeting family there that night, we would've walked out. We told the manager and really didn't get much of a response back.  Next time we will be in DC, we know where NOT to go!

I'll admit it, the only reason I ate at Dubliner's is that I happened to be staying at the adjoining Phoenix Park Hotel and I needed a spot that opened early-ish for Sunday brunch to grab a meal with a former colleague before taking the bus back up to NYC.

That said, the food quality was above average for an Irish pub and the food was sooooo comforting. It was also pretty empty at 11am on a Sunday morning, which I enjoyed. Irish pubs can be a bit noisy and crazy,
so it was nice to have a more chill atmosphere to enjoy my meal.

Loved that they understood we were in a rush and helped us get in and out in just under an hour.

This place can get crowded, and for good reason -- the food here is good.

When it's crowded, it can get cramped and uncomfortable except in the two separate dining areas.

The bar is pretty much always crowded, and is historic and unique.

The best time to try the Dubliner might be a Sunday brunch.

As I am slightly obsessed with Irish pubs, I figured what better place to have a night cap after a pretty drunk birthday dinner. The decor is pretty much what you would expect from an Irish bar in this area, maybe a little less kitschy.

The only reason I will probably keep coming back is the Irish music. I LOVE me some traditional Irish music, so any bar that can provide me my fix is my new favorite place. The sign outside claims that they have Irish music nightly. I have only been here once so I cannot verify this yet but I plan on returning to find out.

Eh. This place showed up on urban spoon's top ten list of places to eat near Capitol Hill, and I needed lunch during my conference lunch break. It was kinda empty at lunchtime on a Saturday.  I walked in and the hostess said, 'Can I help you?' I said, 'Yes, can I sit out on the patio for lunch?' She said, eyebrows vaguely raised, 'Just you?' I flinched a little. Yes, duh, just me. Yes, I am out of town and working on a Saturday and I wanted some peace and quiet to think and therefore am eating lunch alone. Is that wrong?

My food was okay -- not great, not bad. I had the warm salmon salad which consisted of lettuce, tomato wedges, a couple of cucumber slices, a bit of shredded cabbage and carrots, a hardboiled egg, and a fillet of salmon which was good but under-seasoned. It came with these flavorful flatbread crackers that almost helped redeem the bland salad. Iced tea was okay, a little watery.

I probably didn't have the quintessential Dubliner experience b/c of the timing (not really happening in the afternoon) and the salad (not really pub food, I know). I'm open to the possibility that another visit might be better. For now though, I'm underwhelmed. I'd give it 2.5 stars.

First problem: their "happy hour" consists of Blue Moon and nothing else. What the hell kind of a happy hour is that? Second: no vegetarian options on the menu at ALL - (not unusual for an Irish bar so okay fine) - but, third: the  bowl of potato soup I ordered (when I was dragged here by a group of clients who wanted shepherd's pie) was tiny, more like a cup than a bowl, and barely describable as potato soup at all. Not a single chunk of potato was in evidence, there would have been nothing but pure liquid I'd I hadn't crumbled some saltines in for a minimum measure of substance. The weirdly liquid soup tasted weird too. One star because they had Starr Hill IPA on tap, which was delicious as usual. (For what it's worth, my clients seemed to enjoy their shepherd's pie.)

It was the only place open in the area after we finished our night time tour of some of DC's monuments and memorials. It is close to Union station and we were hungry. Next time I'll walk the extra distance and find someplace else.

I've been to the Dubliner about three times now. It's a convenient place to meet my dad when he's in town. Parking can be difficult - I usually just park down the street and pay the meter about $3. We always go straight to the bar for a guinness or two. The guinness is delicious! I really enjoy the atmosphere and people, but unfortunately don't enjoy the food. I ordered the Guinness burger and was disappointed. The burger came without a bun, sitting on top of a potato pancake of some sort. Maybe I didn't carefully read what it came with or without before ordering. Even though I don't enjoy the food, I will continue to go to the Dubliner because of the beer and great atmosphere.

I love going to restaurants with the kids... More dishes to try especially at new dinner joints :)

We had the spinach artichoke dip to start... Eh, it's ok.  Probably wouldn't do it again just because... $11 deserves more than just ok.

    Four meals:

beef stew (would have ordered more of this if we had room!),

chicken pot pie (be prepared for a LOT of flaky crust! Decent taste, but typical flavor),

beef o'flaherty (apparently they know how to cook up beef here, another winner!), and

fish and chips (good portion, nothing to write home about, satisfies that craving, you know which one I'm talking about)

We would go back if we're in the area.  We like Phoenix Park and it's ideal location so someday...

Not 5 stars though... Sorry, for that you need to not be so pricey for  Irish Pub food.  Don't get me wrong, prices are reasonable for "dinner" but $14 for stew is not exactly ideal :)

Went to The Dubliner last night.  Sat in the bar for dinner.  The food was decent pub fare but the service was wretched.  We had a young female server with short blond hair.  She hated every minute of her job and showed it.  She never once smiled at us, never asked us if everything was OK.  Just absolutely horrible service.  We had a Monte Cristo, a Chicken Pot Pie and a Shepherd's Pie.  Again, the food was fine.  One thing that annoyed us was the fact that they show prices on the menu for glasses of beer, but no prices for wine by the glass.  That is annoying.  Would I go back?  Not sure I'd bother...

This is not exactly what I expect from an Irish pub, but it is what I expect from an Irish-American Pub. It is your typical DC restaurant/bar except with Irish food and beer on the menu. Normally, I don't like to tell people what to try at a restaurant, because that leaves no fun in them trying it out for themselves. However, at this place I always tell people "Try the Shepherds Pie, it is TO DE FOR!" It is hands-down the best (well in the DC area). I also really enjoy the corned beef and cabbage, though I will agree with the rest of the negative reviews that the limited portion of meat is a little disheartening. For a quick lunch, I recommend sitting up at the bar and ordering the potato soup.

I love the atmosphere of this place, especially during a sporting event. Which is exactly what you should expect at a pub. The down side of this place, in my opinion, the ONLY down side to this place is the cramped seating. Hope you enjoy meeting new people, for how close you are squished up to the person sitting next to you, you might as well be lovers. Forget having a personal conversation at this place, because more than likely, the person sitting next to you will chime in.

This place also gets rather crowded during Monday-Friday happy hour, but for a weekend lunch, it's the perfect place to sit, relax, and enjoy some hearty American-Irish food, as you chase it down with some Guinness.

So why did I get the salmon from Dingle Bay? Cause I wanted salmon. Obviously the salmon from Dingle would never have recognized the shriveled, cold fish-finger size salmon that came with a drip of special sauce (it was advertised as a butter sauce -- uh, no, it was more like... a thin mayo?). The roasted potatoes were scattered like a dead man's finger nails on the south side of the plate.

But! Make better choices. The fried haddock was fine. The pickle was fine. The coleslaw was fine. The shepherd's pie was fine and a goodly amount. The wine and beer also fine. Ice cream also fine. The bill for four people (four meals, one dessert, three beers, two glasses of wine) was $105.

If I'm ever back here again, I'll do my best to be well into my cups.

Stumbled in here on a cold windy day after walking the streets of DC. The inside is pretty much what you'd expect from an Irish pub, and from a plaque by the door it was one of the first places in the U.S. to serve Smithwicks.

They had some decent daily specials, and I went with the Fish Sandwich. It wasn't over fried or breaded so the flavor of the fish really came out. I had some regrets that I didn't order the shepherds pie though because it looked really good.

    Strong beer selection.

    Its worth a look.

We stayed at the Phoenix Park Hotel, to which The Dubliner is attached and while the hotel-breakfast that is served here was lame and overpriced, we also had a late-night snack of Nachos after watching the 4th of July fireworks and had no complaints.

Went with a Meetup group on 11/19/11 after an event.  The service was good.  I ordered the Guinness Burger (burger marinated in Guinness Stout on a potato pancake covered in 'Welsh' cheese with onion straws.)  It was bland and nearly flavorless.  I expected a "kick" from the marinade but there was none.  There wasn't really much taste difference between the burger and the potato pancake it was sitting on.  Maybe I should have gone with the Corned Beef and Cabbage...

I've heard about this place for some time now and finally got a chance to eat there when visiting DC for business last week. The atmosphere was fine (a typical Irish Pub), the place was roomy, the service was adequate, but the food was just okay. Two of my business partners ordered fish and chips and said the batter greatly overpowered the fish. I had one of their burgers, and it was nothing spectacular. And, the fries that were served along with the burger were luke warm at best. I didn't try any of their beers since we went during lunch, but maybe that's where their strength is. Note that I've heard second hand that breakfast is good at Dubliner. I hope that's the case because the lunch I had there was nothing to write home about.

I was staying in the Pheonix Parke hotel, and on the day I was leaving, it was *pouring* rain.  So my lunch options were immediately narrowed to "go outside and get soaked" or "don't."  I didn't.

The place was pretty crowded over the lunch hour but as a singleton, I didn't have to wait for a seat.  Of course, though, they slipped me in right between two parties of two and I was so close, I felt rather like I was at a dinner party and being left out of the conversations on either side (the guy to my left was telling his female friend all about the new place he was moving into.  On my right, a Georgetown law librarian bemoaned twitter and how it was eating the brains of librarians at lower tier law schools everywhere).

I felt generally underdressed, since I was in travel clothes and everyone else was on a lunch break from some important government, um, place.

I was smushed in the pub, it was pouring rain--I might as well have been in Ireland, eh?  So I went all out with a Guinness and fish & chips.  They were all just fine...my fish had just one dodgy corner.  Everything was heavy, greasy, satisfying.  Left you pretty much unable to move.

I did enjoy that my server, red haired Sean, was authentically Irish.  He was quite friendly and mostly attentive.

Probably not my favorite pub ever, but certainly not the worst.  Since I was staying literally on top of it, I'm glad I checked it out.
