If Sophia Loren HAD to be a hotel in Texas, then she would be The Driskill.

This place is sexy and old school. It's VERY well kept, VERY well preserved. Elegant, but not in a WASPY way. Although, I have to say the gym is more Lauren Bacall than Sofia Loren (in other words, it may have been something at some point, but now it's dead). Nothing that can't be resucitated.

This is for the Four Seasons traveler sans the Four Seasons stuffiness. Lavishly appointed, great location on Brazos & 6th. Overall, a luxuriously sexy experience.

The Driskill....

THE HOTEL:
We spent 3 nights there 10/17-19.....

First impressions WOW....   I said to my boyfriend... since we both walked in with backbacks and wearing jeans... "they don't want the likes of us here"... all joking aside.... when we got to the front desk...checking in was not a problem. Front desk girl was very nice and welcomed us to the hotel..we got our room keys and opted to get the bar key...although we knew we probably weren't going to use it.... but you NEVER KNOW....

As with all other yelpers reviews the hotel has a distinct smell... but what do you expect it's HISTORIC.... this is the case for most HISTORIC places.....

THE ROOM:
810

Since we were going to be visiting for 3 nights we didn't want to spend too much money....so we opted for what the woman on the phone said was a very "quaint servants quarters turned into a room"  lol so we said what the heck... it can't be that bad... yeah, it's going to be small.... but at least we get to stay at a very HISTORIC hotel... and we might even see a ghost.

It's true what other yelpers say.... the hallways are adorned with old photos. Nice touch not really creepy but nice.

We slip in the room key...the room is small.  She wasn't kidding.  I put my bag down and didn't have room to walk to the bed.   The bed was small... maybe a queen... a petite queen.  The restroom was tiny.  Oh well, at least we get to stay at this hotel.  Off to Sixth Street.....

2:00ish.... AM...  I turn on the light in the restroom.... I see a little black bug walk across... fast little guy.  I think "nah.... I've been drinking... Ignore it...."  I do.  Climb into the bed...zzzzzzz

8:00 am... AM I turn on the light.... again.

I didn't tell my boyfriend because I was almost embarrassed for the Driskill.... I thought...I won't see it again...

Off to see family... great day...

Next day.... 7:00 am...flick on the restroom light..... 3 bugs walking around.... ENOUGH.  We aren't paying for bugs... so what if it's HISTORIC. So what!   I took a picture with my phone and managed to kill one.  They were roaches.  ROACHES.... OMG.  I take a shower.... Tell my boyfriend...who is more horrified at the possible "drama, circus atmosphere I might cause"..... and walk downstairs....

Front desk is busy checking in people... I considered being rude and just telling the girl out loud so the people checking in can hear...but decided that would be bad.  I promised.."no drama or circus"

I asked to speak with a manager.... Brittany, Bethany, Beth, not sure what the name was came out from behind a curtain.... Not kidding... a curtain.  I told her that I expected many things from a hotel such as the Driskill.  I expected a ghost, nice dinner, blah, blah, blah.... but NEVER did I expect bugs, roaches.... she stared at me then I said... LOOK I have pictures... she looked and her beautiful composed face contorted into something horrible.  She apologized.  I said... I understand you have rooms which are "servants rooms, smaller rooms but I did not expect ROACHES"  she upgraded the room.... I was still annoyed.  One last thing I told her was to make sure they fumigate before they book that room again.

THE 2nd ROOM
Room 901, The Senate Room.

Very nice.... clean.  No bugs.  I even looked at 2:00am.  In addition to the room upgrade, she had a plate of fruit and fresh cookies sent up to the room.  Nice touch.

THE BAR

The bar is very nice.  They had live music. The crowd was very different from the rest of Sixth Street. You can have a drink while sitting on a cow hide couch... very Texan.  Happy with the bar. Drinks are expensive... but it's HISTORIC.  lol

ROOM SERVICE:

Last morning there... I said what the heck, since I am going to YELP this place might as well rate the room service,  I had the American Breakfast, which consists of 2 eggs, potatoes, toast, sausage or bacon.  Skip the sausage. Potatoes are bland.  They didn't send up salt or pepper.  Coffee was good. I also had a butter croissant.  Very very good.

Final bill $883.00, with Government rate....(we both work in LE)

Overall.... was it worth it.  NO.   Would I stay again. NO.  Am I glad I did, YES...

This hotel is very dishonest and should be avoided by all visitors to Austin.

During Austin City Limits, they have a 14 day cancellation policy, but they do not inform their customers of this.  Rather, they put it in the fine print of the confirmation letter.  I have traveled all over the world and never seen a 14 day cancellation policy, even for festivals like Jazzfest or Coachella.   Such an unusual, uncustomary policy should be disclosed clearly on the phone at the time of the reservation, but it was not to me.

Their staff, when I protested, was rude and unprofessional.  They will rent out that room in two seconds and I am sure they have a waiting list.  This is just meant as a trap to the unwary.

Anway, I look forward to many years of enjoying the great city of Austin from SWSX and ACL but never will deal with a hotel that stoops so low and will tell all my friends and family to the same.

Scored a room for around $130 a night via Priceline, and was thrilled. Staff was charming and helpful, decor was beautiful, and the in house restaurants were great - several cuts above standard hotel eateries. I may have had the best Bloody Mary of my life at the bar. Great fodder for history buffs here - my husband asked how old the hotel was at check in, and was given an informational timeline of the building's history. Did you know that LBJ and Lady Bird had their first date at the Driskill? And that LBJ awaited election night results in 1960 and 1964 here?

A problem with our shower was solved promptly. My only complaint is that the bathroom had a step between the toilet/shower and the sink/vanity. Can I tell you how many times the hub and I stumbled on that step? A LOT.

The location is right on 6th street, so you are within walking - I mean stumbling - distance from many great restaurants and bars.

I fell in love with Austin on our recent trip, and this hotel played a huge part in that!

The Driskill is absolutely beautiful.  The location does not get better than 6th and Brazos.  I love the details found around the hotels.  My friend and I walked around the hotel to the different meeting rooms and looked over the different balconies.  It's surprisingly well-kept for how old the hotel is and not musty at all.  I loved the fresh flowers EVERYWHERE.

We didn't have any issues with check-in nor check-out.  Warning: getting to the hotel after 11pm by car can be difficult on the weekends with the 6th street road closures.  I lived in Austin for 8 years and forgot about that!

My wife and I enjoyed a 'staycation' over Labor Day weekend - which happens to coincide with our wedding anniversary - spending a night at the Driskill in a Senate Room on the 11th floor.

We loved it. We love the hotel, the service was very friendly and attentive, and the room was big and very nice.

We had a corner room with a southeast view of Austin. It was well appointed with a large bathroom, sofa sitting area, and a king sized bed. Our only gripe was that the pillows were basically flat so we both were up many times in the night, but otherwise it was superb. Next time - we'll just bring our own pillows.

Very cool place for a special occasion if you're an Austinite looking for a staycation option - or an out of town guest looking for a nice hotel in a great location.

I often stay here when my fiance's wife is out of town and he is free for the weekend.  We love it.  The AC can get down to 40F and they always overserve.

This is the place to stay in town, obviously.  I arrived at the desk just after another gentleman.  When he turned around, we both realized we'd sat next to each other on the first leg of our flight -- from Chicago to Houston. Same guy!

That was the more eerie thing that happened to me in my stay here. Friends had warned me that the hotel was supposedly haunted, but I never or saw anything creepy. To be cheesy and borrow a catchphrase from one of my favorite flicks, I ain't afraida no ghosts! Maybe I'd change my tune if I'd heard any strange rattles or bumps in the night. But, nothing supernatural this time.

But overall, I was quite taken with the history and grandeur of the Driskill. I fall for historical buildings easily, having been raised by a dad with a keen interest in preservation. I do wish I could have taken a tour or had the time to read up a bit more on the hotel's history. Next time, I suppose!

For an older property, the hotel has been carefully taken care of and offers most modern amenities that you'd want. Rooms are extremely spacious, with deep tubs and ample "getting ready" space with plenty of counters to spread things out upon. My only gripe with the bathroom is the scratchy towels. I never understand why very nice hotel still have such scratchiness! They must hold up longer in the laundry I guess.

Similarly, the pillows were OK, but there were tons of them (shams, etc.) and none was "just right" to keep me from getting a crick in my neck. The bed itself, though?  Plenty comfy and easy to doze off under the covers.

There is a mini-bar, but on check-in, they'll ask you if you want a key.  To resist temptation, I wisely declined. However, room service isn't 24 hours, so if you tend to get the midnight munchies, be sure to stock up on snacks at the convenience store (or in Michigan terms, the "party store") across the street.

I had to send and receive several important faxes while I was here. The staff was very helpful with this, but I did encounter some problems with trying to send something on the last day.  The office I was sending it to swore the problem wasn't on their end, so perhaps the fax line is the thing that's haunted?!

Regardless, the staff were so accommodating and I enjoyed my stay overall so much, I can't help but give a solid 4 stars.

Beautiful building, fantastic balcony, obnoxious bartenders "here's yur tab, senyorrrita", hideous cheap casino carpet, lovely piano, gross-out sugar daddy/dreary businessman clientele, overpriced drinks.

Really underwhelming for the grandeur I was expecting. I will totally up it a star if anyone can give confirmation on the rumored violent hauntings.

We stayed at the Driskill on an anniversary weekend trip to Austin - our room on the 12th floor was very comfortable, quiet, and cozy.  The bed was awesome with a cool D iron headboard that was super interesting.  Overall the hotel did a great job at making the trip really special - they make it really easy to order nice touches like champagne to the room and have it delivered moments after you arrive.  Also, the hotel bar downstairs is a good place to get a drink or appetizer before heading off for dinner elsewhere - the baked brie was the bomb.

A few cons - the TV in the room was crap (but if you are staying there to watch TV on your anniversary, you missed the point!), the bathroom door was broken when we checked in with the hinge off the frame - weird they didnt notice that, but it was quickly fixed when we told them, and the room was weirdly hot and then cold sometimes at night so you were constantly kicking on and off covers.

A few small points that kept away the five stars, but a CHARMING hotel with an AMAZING location.  Would definitely stay there again!

The Driskill's pretty effen sweet.

My boyfriend and I roll up to the front desk to check in, and the front desk girl keeps looking at me all funny. She's nice, sweet, polite...but something tells me that she's hiding something. "So you're here for a special occasion?" she asks. I look at my bf all confused, and he ignores me.

WELLLLL they had pulled off a special surprise for me...a nice bottle of bubbly was upstairs waiting on ice. SWEET. Love it.

So besides the front desk staff being awesome and and friendly, the rest of the hotel is super cool. It has a really old feel because it's an Austin landmark, yet it's elegant but casual all at the same time.

Our room was in the older part of the hotel, which was kinda cool. Everything was kinda small but that's expected...it's older and their standards of "large" were a lot different back then.

The only "oops!" to the whole stay was my fault...sorta. I plugged in my curling irong and POOF! - all the lights went out. I think I popped the breaker for the whole floor, but we got someone up fairly quickly and we resolved the issue.

My grandfather told me, weeks after we got back from our trip, that he used to go to the Driskill when he was in med school and get their lemon ice box pie. He's 82....and this hotel is still a'rockin.

I think the Driskill would be perfect for a wedding reception, or another quick weekend getaway (hint, hint, bf....).

I feel like I should be writing this review by candlelight, or perhaps flashlight, while 3 of my friends giggle and tell ghost stories in the room behind me because I think this place may be a little haunted, which suites me just fine as I've always wanted to see a ghost.

The Driskill is a beautiful old hotel right on 6th and Brazos. Some of the hallways are as wide as my room because it was built in the days where the bigger your petticoat meant the bigger your bank account, so to speak. And of course they needed the hallway room for all the affluent ladies to parade down. This also means that the elevator, which was made a long time ago, I'm guessing, is a little scary to me because of its age.

The rooms are beautiful. The staff is impeccably professional. The checkout is at noon. And I'm fairly certain I received turndown service last night. Either that or some ghost from the 1800s is very polite.

The art in the rooms and the hallway is really interesting. Some of it is pictures of the Driskill in its days of yore. Others seem to be people that were perhaps regulars? The people pictures also have small items like old room keys and handkerchiefs framed alongside them.

Considering the location and amenities (did I mention free Wi-Fi?) I'm really enjoying my stay here and will definitely be back.

Amber, dies at 102 having never paid for that mimosa because she died and her cold, boney hand still clutches the champagne flute longingly at her life unlived, and morning held up.

I will say this about the Driskill though, GORRRRGGEEEOUS place, the upstairs bar is also very-very nice and contains, get this, Danielle Steele novels and other such trash but leather bound and inconspicuous on the shelves, look for yourself.  Also - the Irish bartender is an amazing man and a fantastic storyteller.  I went once to have dinner with the ambassador of Sweden (it was a massive dinner) and the catering seemed super-alright.  They made me feel fancy.

Bottom line?  Go for the bar, but if you hit the 1886 around brunch, oh boy, look out because this review was based on multiple experiences...

I booked a Senate room here for my wedding night. I needed a room that was slightly larger than the others, since I knew my whole family was going to meet me there.

When I arrived, I must have put in the reservation that it was my wedding night, because they bumped me up to the bridal suite on the 5th floor with a corner balcony. It was absolutely gorgeous, and after about 10 minutes in the room, champagne and chocolate covered-cherries were delivered.

And the bathroom? Holy cow. We could have fit the entire wedding in the shower. We ended up just taking pictures of all the kids in the gigantic bathtub.

It was definitely the most memorable day and night of my life, and I thank them for making it extra special.

I had the honor of having The Driskill host my wedding.  It was, by far, the most amazing day of my life.   The Driskill provided me with a catering manager, Wendy, who was my point of contact for all things in relation to my wedding.  She helped me with the ceremony and reception, vendors, food selections, the cake and much more.  Basically I was a spoiled bride since The Driskill takes care of all your needs.  There wasn't much I had to do on my own, as the whole package includes everything you need for that special day.

The day of the wedding we were upgraded many times.  The girls stayed in the Yellow Rose Bridal Suite, which was gorgeous.  The boys hid in The Citadel Club and we were all nourished with sandwiches, fruit, beer and mimosas.  For the honeymoon room, we were upgraded to the Bridal Suite.  More on that soon!

The ceremony was perfect.  We had it in the Crystal Meeting room, which offered a cozy and beautiful location.  It was in the perfect spot, downstairs off the grand stairway.  Perfect location for our guests to find us.

The reception was outstanding!  We had our party in the two-story Victorian Room.  Every aspect was as planned...including flowers, tables, food stations, favors, etc.  I can't think of a single thing that went wrong.  Matt and I had our own drink server.  He was a very nice man who followed us around and made sure we had a preferred drink in our hand at all times.  I wish I could bring him home.  Mmmmmm the food was delicious.  Our server made sure we went upstairs to eat and brought us both plates filled with food.  I always heard you don't have time to eat or drink at your own wedding, but I have to say, having someone prepare everything for you makes it possible.

The honeymoon suite was mind-blowing.  Read Allison's review.  It's true about the bathroom.  The view that night was simply perfect.  Overlooking the lights on 6th street, chocolate covered strawberries in hand, champagne on the balcony.  Who could ask for more?

If you are ever given the opportunity to have The Driskill host your wedding, please do so.  I can't give this place enough stars.

We did not stay here, just walked around and took in all the rich history and decor.  It is striking to say the least, an absolutely beautiful place with some impeccable attention to detail paid in nearly every aspect.

The marble, rich wood, punched tin ceiling, tons of original oil paintings that adorn the walls next to some stuffed longhorn heads(taxiderm linguistics anyone ??, i'm sure I "butchered" it), amazing stained glass doorways and domed ceiling that would make Frank Lloyd Wright stop in his tracks, cool little nooks and places to sit by the many fireplaces and sip on a cocktail...this place  takes you back to a TX long forgotten.

Definitely worth a look even if  you're not staying at the hotel itself.

A very nice hotel, of course, but after winning two nights at the locally famous Driskill hotel I have been nothing but disappointed with the organization.

I acquired a gift package for two free nights at the Driskill through a charity auction. Let me repeat, a CHARITY auction. Unfortunately, each time I call to make reservations and have a date set I am mysteriously told that they no longer have open rooms once I mention of using my free night package. It miraculously appears on 'the computer' after I mention that I will be using my gift package.

As any good consumer would do, I have asked for the manager and shockingly enough he/she has yet to call me back. Keep in mind they have to call me back because they are never available during my time on the phone with the reservations clerk. A busy man/woman indeed.

I hear nice things about the place but to having been clearly pushed aside and lied to on several occasions when I try to redeem a room from a charity gift that has already been paid for I find myself at a loss for words. Up until I logged onto Yelp of course.

This hotel is beautiful! The giant, sumptuous lobby reminded me of the big old hotels (St. Francis) in downtown SF. I love that it has character - copper ceiling tiles in the bar, old funky elevators, a bank vault in the lobby. Much better than staying in a "box" hotel where you really could be anywhere.

The rooms are small but nicely appointed with tall ceilings, ceiling fans, flat screen TVs and each one is a little different then the next. Our bed and pillows were comfy and our shower was hot. The AC worked well and was not crazy loud. Our room was a little loud from street noise and a pack of girls on our floor who seemed to think they were at a sorority. But security took care of the girls gone wild in a timely and efficient manner and I think a normal night here would be fine in the noise department.

If you want to get some culture and get a feel for upscale Texas Cowboy/Oil Baron /Cattle Baron vibe this is the place to stay! If you're a history buff you will love this place.

The hotel staff was friendly, the room was well maintained, and location was perfect for walking the 6th Street area and the State capital.   If your into the bar scene or looking to enjoy the culture of old Texas, I highly recommend this hotel.

There is no self-parking in this hotel.  Parking is available on either sides of the hotel.  You can valet park for $25 a night with in and out privileges.

Government rates are available so ask!

Make sure to read their website... they provide very useful information about the hotel and the area.

Recommended place to stay! History with modern luxury! Oh and Starbucks is a block down behind the Hotel!

The Driskill is located right off of the oh so rowdy 6th street. After my husband and I walked along 6th street we were feeling quite old watching all drunk college kids parade into the bars in their short skirts and using their fake ID's.  Sigh, to be young again.   So thank goodness for the Driskill because the old school hotel made me feel young again.

Besides giving me the feeling of youth we experienced great service, a comfortable room (although a bit on the small side), and they have a complimentary gym with all the equipment you could possibly need. My husband was also a big fan of the art work in their hallways.

I'd definitely consider staying here again if the price was right...we paid just over $200/night, which I found to be well worth it.

You want a wedding reception somewhere classy?

You don't get better than the Driskill.

This place is probably the classiest in Austin. Wonderful decor, good food, and lots of history.

I've shot wedding receptions here as a videographer, and you can't point a camera anywhere without getting a great shot.

I came to scope out Austin over the four day Thanksgiving weekend.  I wanted to stay in a nice place.  Well I sure did.  It was so nice I didn't want to get out and explore.  The thought crosses my mind every few weeks about booking a room here again and just spoiling myself.
Everything about the experience was great.  The staff, the room, the room service, all of it.

Finally got the chance to stay here! Last year I totally had my heart set on spending a lovely few days at The Driskill.......unfortunately it was SXSW and they were 100% sold out, as expected.

Wonderful ambiance, and two nights of the most comfortable beds and blankets, I was sold! They even stock Molton Brown toiletries! The staff here is amazingly helpful, and polite. Whether you need your bags checked up front, directions to a nearby cafe, or a suggestion on the nearest bar that is not  a tourist trap on 6th street.

The breakfast, which is included in your room, is fantastic. Every morning I could hardly wait to run downstairs and order up a plate of the house-made granola served with fresh fruit and yogurt..umm so good! The coffee is good as well, and you will be treated to a bottomless cup.

The Bar is another great find that comes with this continually great Hotel. The drinks are great and the bar fare does not consist of your typical wings and fries. Try out the brie mini burger or gourmet nachos.

From now on when I am in Austin I will no longer be looking for a Hotel. I will happily  be cozying up at the Driskill.

Absorbing this lounge was a blast. You wonder what kinds of stories have been told under that ornate ceiling, and who's been jerked up out of their bar stool and thrown out the side door. You wonder how many guns have clanged up against the bar.

I'm someone who doesn't mind paying more for a nicer place to stay, but I expect this place to have a lesser amount of problems than what I saw.

I love the architecture of this building and actually prefer to stay in the historical wing- with wonderful, high ceiling, large- open windows, and despite the small square footage, it felt cozy. Those are really the only good things I can say about this hotel.

The problems:
- My bathroom door needed adjusting on knob and alignment. I got stuck in the bathroom for about 10 minutes trying to figure out which direction I needed to move it in order to get the door open.
- We also noticed this very musky smell spreading throughout our hallway. It was kind of gross and it made me feel dirty having to walk through that.
- I don't feel like the staff really cares about the patrons visiting their establishment... everything felt forced, short, and kind of pushy and wanting you to leave them alone. All we ever needed from them was to check in and valet the car. It doesn't warrant that type of treatment.
- I'm not a big fan of the small dog policy they have. What's wrong with big dogs? My 19 month old Great Pyrenees has his CGC, does obedience, and is also a therapy dog which I'm sure is much more than any of the dogs I saw (and heard) coming by. Someone down the hall had a small dog that only barked hysterically, and during a time people really like to sleep!

Anyways, I love the building and that's it. The end.

If you like old and quirky, this place is for you. If you want corporate Hyatt, Sheraton, etc. then go there. This place is about old Texas and it's obvious that's what you're going to get.

Evidently its really, really old Texas before the love affair with the car though.

Old decor, old looking restaurants and bars (pre- Art Deco), high prices.
Add good services and customers. Simple formula.

If this works for you, great, if not, there's other options in Austin.

Paranormal = Paranoia ... for me, at least. I can't watch scary movies. I get nightmares from even the previews ... I couldn't even do Scooby Do as a kid, so I most certainly can't do The Driskill--alone.

I stayed at The Driskill this past week while in town for work. Melody L and I waned to save the company some money by shacking up in the same room. My suggestion to do this was to cover up the fact that old historical hotels scare the hell out of me, and there was no way I was going to get any shut eye in a room by myself at night. I could just see myself, covers over my head with the restroom light on. Who is that?!

All jokes aside, The Driskill is a beautifully ornate and historical hotel that epitomizes Texas opulence. It was built in 1886 as the showplace of a cattle baron, its restoration now houses more than 189 rooms, a massage spa, restaurant with a bakery (complimentary sweet treats 9pm-1pm), bar/lounge, business center, free Wi-Fi, turn-down service, complimentary shoe shine, fitness studio and more. To further discuss the fitness studio, I was impressed with the number of cardio machines, free weights, view of the city and endless thirst-quenching and fresh lemon water.

Service was top notch. Checking in was fast, the front desk, concierge, bell hops and valet staff were incredibly accommodating and fun to chat with. Rooms were spacious, restrooms clean; our room came with two sinks in separate rooms with vanity mirrors), flat screen TV--yet still maintaining the Texas Hill Country theme--multiple lamps, luxury bathrobes, safety boxes and a great view of 6th street.

There were but a few downsides to my experience at the hotel. The ATM machine wasn't working, the restroom blow dryer barely shot out any heat (for the first time ever, I forgot all of my hair products: curling iron, brush, straightener. It was hell.), and there wasn't any mouthwash. I'm sure if I asked for some, they'd provide it--just like they did for a friend who ended up sleeping over and needed a toothbrush (which was a good one, by the way). Those were minor hiccups, but most of all the walls were thin. I was startled a few times in the night and early morning with doors slamming and folks chatting it up in the hallway. I'm not a light sleeper, so I'm surprised that woke me up. Fortunately, I carry earplugs (mostly for plane rides, coffee shops, etc. with screaming babies), so it wasn't too much of an issue. Also of note, when making your reservation, be sure to check the rates and specials they have online. When I made the reservation with our company rate, they actually had a cheaper one for the same room available on their site. I had to call back and bring this to their attention, which they quickly updated my rate to the cheaper one. Kudos to that.

On my next visit, I'll certainly try and make time for the hotel tour. Kevin L informed us of a room where the fate of Bonnie and Clyde were decided and pictures are there for guests to observe. During my stay, I noticed a door vault would be interesting to know where that used to/currently leads to, as well as a secret door that was almost impossible to see existed until we spotted a gentleman--or perhaps ghost--walk out of. I'm also interested in knowing if the Gentleman's Club is still secretly in full-fledged bizz. (ahem)

Overall, my stay at The Driskill was a positive and memorable one, and a big thank you to Melody L for shackin' up with this scaredy cat. (I forgot to mention that Tiffany C had her own room, and was a little freaked out as well. i offered her to snuggle up with us if needed. Safety in numbers, right?) God help me when I come back again to The Driskill and have to sleep solo.

I've never stayed at the Driskell but I do like their happy hour at the Driskell Bar.  Lots of couches for small groups.  Sometimes someone even plays the piano and sings.

Here's their happy hour drink deals (5-7PM)
Monday  - $4 Margaritas & $3 Mexican beer
Tuesday -$5 Patron drinks
Wednesday - half priced wine, $5 Manhattans
Thursday - $5 speciality martinis
Friday - $4 well liqueur
Saturday -$5  Vodka with Red Bull
Sunday - $3 domestic beer, $4 caiprinhas

Half priced bar food from 5pm - 7pm.   They have burgers, pizza, nachos, and a few other things. Great bar food.

It was the end of Sxsw, and there was nothing to do downtown. It was around 2pm, never ever came to this place before. But me and a friend wanted to check it out, and we definately don't look like the type of people who would go there.

Im a kidd who normally goes to punk rock shows, and wears black, and i look like im fourteen and so does my friend.. but i was surprised that i was treated nicely, and i wasn't givin the look, Ya know the... "im sure they are up to no good, gonna run out without paying shanaghans"
That place isnt too pricey, but we didn't look like people who were about to spend 60 bucks on lunch.

Seriously this place has amazing food, My mouth is literally watering right now, just thinking of their Cheese pizza, Yea cheese pizza... Seems all simple and whatnot, but damn it was good.

And their deserts?!?! I have only been here once, which is pretty sad. But i talk about their cheesecake alot. Its pretty snazzy.

Its not too pricey, but i will end up spending 30-40 bucks if i go there, which is why i havnt gone again. Not too pricey if you don't order dessert and whatnot. But for two people its around 60-80 bucks, Probably alot more if you get alchohol.

Do you believe in ghosts?

If you don't this place will make you think about it!  This is an  old school hotel from the 1800's.   The art work is spooky, the layout is awkward with a single elevator for the entire hotel.  A slightly charming period hotel with antiques, however, there are creaky floors, fans that go on at night without notice.

Seriously there are 2 ghosts that haunt this place a young girl that died in the stairwells in the 1800s, she was a Senators daughter and can be heard between the mezannine and 1st floor and also a suicide from the 1990s.

How I miss the Four Seasons down the street!!

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a nice experience. The hotel is split in 2 sections: the historic side - ornate beds with canopies and other flamboyant colors and the new tower - think regular hotel patterns, small room and all the towels folded in fans. It is very Texas, decorated with stars , animal heads and old photographs.

The first thing I noticed in both rooms was that they had some weird nature noises playing from the alarm clock. My first room was tiny and crowded with 2 beds. I called the front desk and they switched me over to a corner room with 1 bed. It had fun alcoves.

There's Fuji water and a full mini bar as well. The room service didn't look bad either, but I opted to eat at the bar instead.

The lobby of the hotel is dark and very decorative. The elevators are a bit confusing because they split up in 2 sets. I missed it on both nights, but they have a free dessert in the lobby. That's so fun!

Overall, I had a good time, the service was great and you were staying at a historical hotel.

I stayed at this hotel for a work event last year and enjoyed it. It's great in the sense that it's different from other hotels. The older wing is very interesting and has a sense of history about it that I found compelling. My room was in the "newer" wing but one of my coworkers was in the older wing. We spent a lot of time in her room.

I saw a few of the rooms as we were in a group and I loved the fact that they didn't have that generic hotel feel to them (I'm lookin' at you Four Seasons).  The service was good, but not nearly as good as that of the Four Seasons. The bar at the Driskill is always fun as well. Overall, a great place to stay.

I've also been here for a wedding reception that was absolutely amazing, as well as their cafe restaurant.

I was all set to give this place 5 stars, but then the darn steam room didn't work.  Geez, they don't have a pool or a sauna... they don't have a masseuse on staff (although they do have massage rooms in which they can supply a massage if you want one) and the workout facilities are pretty sparse.  So you'd hope that the ONE feature they have, the steam room, would work!  But no.  4 hours before our reservation to eat at the Driskill restaurant downstairs and they could not give me a massage.  Ok.  short notice.  Forgivable.  But then I go to the "steam room"... and well, first, it's OFF.  which sucks because now I have to turn it on and that will take 20 minutes to heat up.  so I turn it on and do a few sets in the workout room.  I go back 15 minutes later to check on it and... no... not working.  Doesn't work.  Nice!  Well, it's only, ya know, 350/night or something.  The "best place to stay" in Austin.  The oldest hotel west of the Mississippi.  Completed in 1886.

They have their own WIKIPEDIA entry for chrissake!  http://en.wikipedia.or...   It's listed in the U.S. Government's National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).  So, ya know, no reason that I'd assume that the steam room would be working.

Anyway, whatever.  Steam room experience blew.  Too bad.  on the other hand: Rooms were excellent.  I want to move in.  Amenities were swanky!  Molton Brown brand from London.  Never used them before but now I'm gonna buy some.  Lobby was spectacular with the marble floors, the pillars, the wood-work in the walls and ceilings.  Take pictures.  I'll try to upload some of mine.  Multiple weddings at the Driskill over the weekend.  The restaurant is the consensus best restaurant in Austin.  The concierge is great.  Very, very helpful guy and knowledgeable.  He made all our reservations for us and gave us a good run-down on the different places around the city.

But of all the stellar features.... the best, best feature?  Location.  You do not need a car in Austin at all but definitely not if you stay at the Driskill.  The San Jose is the other spot I thought of staying which would have been a nice experience (I looked at it while I was there) but The San Jose is about 1.5 miles from the center of town which would have made cabbing it on a regular basis a must.  However, the Driskill IS the center of town.  So you can make a very, very, very short walk to the live-music section of town, or the college-bar section, or the ritzier, more wine and dance club section.  You can even walk to the University if you want from there (it's about a mile from the Driskill).

All in all, if you want the location and the historical hotel ambience and the ghost stories and the incredible design and features, The Driskill.  If you're looking for a pool, spa.... Well, I'd probably suggest going to some other city altogether.

I always try to stay here when I'm in town, and my latest visit over New Year's did nothing but reaffirm my loyality to this hotel.  Service is consistly second to none, and the curio rooms, while small, are very well outfitted for the price.  The tall ceilings really help the smaller rooms feel larger, and the little touches such as the ceiling fan, amazingly comfortable bed, and high volume/pressure shower head are always appreciated.  In short, the location, the service, and the luxury all make the Driskill THE hotel to say in during your next visit to the Live Music Capital of The World.

The boy and I stayed here a year ago for two nights as a mini vacation since we were both working and going to summer school and thus didn't have time for a "real" summer vacation. We were pleasantly surprised to find we had been upgraded to a suite free of charge.

The only downside we found was having to use the valet service and pay for it extra. We asked about parking ourselves and they looked at us like we were crazy and then sent us to several garages who said that  wecould not in fact park there. So we gave in and paid for valet. It seems if you're required to use the service it should be included in the price of your room

The bakery is excellent and the bed in the room was huge and comfy. We walked to Katz's for dinner one night and sat on the porch listening to the sounds coming off sixth street when we got back.

The good: We stayed at the Driskill Hotel for a night this weekend. It's an amazing looking hotel on the outside, and then you step inside and it's even more beautiful. The theme is all about Texas history, complete with old photographs and a bull's head (which personally, I could do without). The staff were all friendly and helpful (especially with our calls for dinner and drinks recommendations when we were out driving around Austin). They also have an in-house grill, bakery (try the free samples from 9-10pm), and bar, and they have free wireless internet. It's also around the corner from all the restaurants and bars in downtown Austin, so it's very convenient.

The bad: Despite all of these great things, the room was rather disappointing. The bed took up most of the room, and there wasn't much that was unique about the room. It really felt like any other random hotel room. They do not provide parking (they suggested that we try to find street parking or pay for a parking garage), and they charged us for local phone calls. We had the government rate for our room, and I can't say that the room would be worth the regular price.

All in all, it's a beautiful hotel where it would be nice to have dinner or drinks, but I would not pay full price for a room there. While it's definitely unique and in a great location, I found it hard to give this place 4 stars because the rooms were just not up to par.

met friends for breakfast on sunday.  Scrambled eggs were very dry, grits were without any flavor (not a big grits fan, but others at the table who are were not impressed).  Eggs benedict were over cooked with the yolks not even remotely oozing, and they sure are stingy with the sauce.  not enough to have with the last several bites.  So, you think just because you pay $12 for a couple of eggs that they would be really good.  Not the case here.  Our waitress was lovely, and they did give us separate checks which made things a lot easier with a group.
