I love this bar--it's my new favorite. Great music, a fantastic selection of (affordable) beers, a nice Happy Hour and friendly bartenders. What else could you ask for?
I'd love to see one really cheap beer on the menu--a $3 Yuengling bottle, maybe?--but other than that, I give the DW an A+. Just a comfortable, warm place with excellent drink options and good tunes. Thanks!
I find it utterly hilarious that my Johnny-come-lately hipster-yuppie transplant neighbors are giving this cookie-cutter gentrification watering hole five-star reviews based solely on the fact that "it's not Farrell's."
As for the bar itself? Well let's see... Pretentious name? Check. Vast selection of obscure microbrews that no one really cares about? Check. A feeling in the air like no one in here has worked a real job in their entire life? Check. The "Double Windsor" is about as original, interesting, and charming as your average suburban 7-11 parking lot--which, ironically, is where most of its patrons hung out before they followed the Pied Piper here to Brooklyn to meet other yupsters identical to themselves. If you are a frail white male who becomes visibly nervous around even a modicum of testosterone, then you and your Brooklyn Industries messenger bag will feel right at home over here at the "Dub-Win."
On any given night of the week, when the weather is warm, you can hear the nasal, pretentious banter wafting out of the open panel windows of this place, as the nuevo-Slope/Terrace leisure class gets acquainted with each other, late night on weekdays (work? what work?), whilst trying not to trip over each other's baby strollers.
Needless to say, the good folks at the "Double Windsor" won't have to worry about us lowbrow Farrell's aficionados breaking the vibe up in the place with our brusque working class demeanor and lack of knowledge of obscure novelists. We'll gladly stay across the street, patiently waiting for you to go just as pretentiously and flippantly as you wandered into our community.
I love this place! I usually wander in here after buying tickets at the Pavilion, and it's probably my favorite bar in Brooklyn.
I've been a few times in the 5-9 pm range, and it has the best vibe. I'd feel comfortable reading a book, writing, working on my laptop, doing shots at the bar with a friend, or just sitting and talking. They have a great beer selection and friendly, no-nonsense bartenders, and I like that. There are usually a few babies in there, but the bartender politely kicked out all the kids at... 7? Somewhere around there?
This place made me understand the difference between a pub and a bar. I'm so glad it's nearby.
This is the greatest neighborhood bar around! Love the atmosphere, the board games, the bartenders and from what I am told the burgers are outstanding.
One, the staff and the owner were really nice. I've yet to find a place in Manhattan like this, and few in Brooklyn too. Two, I don't live in WIndsor Terrace, Park Slope or Williamsburg... and I'm not a yuppie... but I do like really good beer... and this place has a pretty good selection of it. Yeah, there seems to be a few pretentious wankers that hang out here, but why would anyone seriously give a shit??? Plus $6 is standard for a pint of excellent ale here- the fact that they sell 10% & 11% abv for this price is actually pretty good. Other spots in the city have ales the Double Windsor has on tap for at least a dollar more. AND, the kitchen opened a week or two ago... they have a DAMN good grilled cheese & really great fries. I could eat at least 2-3 of them & would be happy to pay the price. Will certainly return.
Welcome, DW. I've waited so long for you!
This is a really nice, chill, relaxed bar (at least it is on a Tuesday night.) I love that there are no TVs and I hope they never install any. Don't need another sports watching venue, just a bar with a great vibe and beer selection. I'm also in love with the wide plank wood floors.
I'm very happy this is so close to my apartment.
Edited to add: I was there the night after Christmas and noticed there is a TV there. Did I miss this the last time? Oh well.
This is less a review than a congratulations.
When I first moved into my place back in May, I was excited to see a new bar opening right under my apartment. The options in this neighborhood are somewhat limited. I don't exactly fit in at Farrell's, and 7th ave. is a pretty long way to stumble. So I eagerly waited.
And waited.
And waited...
I peeked in the windows. I got friendly with the owners. I sat on the stoop and smoked a thousand cigarettes before wandering upstairs. I sort of gave up all hope on them ever opening.
And then today, as I walked across the street to pick up my laundry, they were...open.
And busy.
It felt like a neighborhood open house, complete with families, friends, neighbors and various well wishers, All gathered around a beautiful horseshoe bar, drinking a wide variety of delicious craft beer, served up by a friendly staff.
So I should probably start writing rent checks to this place for my spot at the end of said horseshoe bar.
Updated review to come once the kitchen is up and running.
I am absolutely thrilled to have a great bar near me that doesn't require getting on the subway or walking all the way to 7th or 5th Ave. It was a bit chilly and rainy last weekend, but walking just a few blocks didn't seem so bad in exchange for a great selection of beer and friendly faces.
I got there around 10PM on Saturday night (this is after stopping by for a drink after work just a few days before), and it already had a decent crowd. No seats available, but we found a nice place to stand without being in the way, a huge feat. The bartenders passed out papers with their beer selection so we could make our decision before getting up to the bar. Great beer, nice bar, friendly staff (from what I've seen), I'll definitely be stopping by on a regular basis.
Leave it to Windsor Terrace to be the site of another completely uninspiring watering hole. First you have the douchebag cop-bar across the street, then you have a lame sports bar called rhythm and booze, and now a would-be tgi fridays. the beer selection might be impressive, but this place has zero ambiance and a predictably lame clientele, many of whom seem confoundingly proud of themselves for being up past the town's bedtime.
Great new bar that has a good, laidback atmosphere and a ton of space so you don't feel crowded by all of the hipsters in their flannel shirts and skinny jeans.
Might be hard to find a beer to drink if you're like me and you're partial to the Bud Light or the Heineken, but I understand that's not their scene, so I can deal.
Played really good music and I like the colored Christmas lights. They made it feel very warm and homey for some reason--or maybe that's because it was 4am and I was shitfaced. Either or.
Happy Birthday Double Windsor.
We of Windsor Terrace have been awaiting your birth for months.
What a welcome addition to the neighborhood! Opening night saw many familiar neighborhood faces. The lighting is perfect, the large windows that keep the neighborhood in view are spectacular, and the staff was lovely. It feels like it's always been there.
I would have tried to be the first reviewer last night, but I had one too many of the specials before heading home.
Double Windsor, I look forward to watching you grow.
May I never have to leave my block to find a great bar again!
After much anticipation and waiting, waiting waiting, it is finally here! PPW has long needed a great place for the locals to share a beer that isn't served in a plastic cup. The atmosphere is comfortable and warm, the staff welcoming, and it has plenty of places to sit with your own crowd or mingle with others. Walk in and feel like you've been there a million times before.
The Double Windsor is a natural fit to the neighborhood and certainly long overdue. Congrats on your opening!
The vibe here is neighborhoody and friendly, without being stodgy or parochial. At the same time, it's hip and young without being snooty or annoying. It's an ideal place for people who want a warm and welcoming place in Windsor Terrace without pretensions. It ain't Manhattan, Williamsburg, or even Park Slope. This is Windsor Terrace, and Double Windsor is Goldilocks (just right) for this 'hood.
The bar itself is tastefully done and well-proportioned, with an inviting J-shaped bar and plenty of room for tables along the two walls of windows, which look like they will open to the street in warmer weather. The music selection on the owner's ipod is great, and the volume is permanently set at a level that allows you to hear someone talking across the table. (Such an important and often overlooked quality in a good bar or restaurant.)
The owners and staff have been friendly, inviting, and happy to chat with customers.
The selection of beer is sophisticated, focusing mostly on American micro and craft brews. The mixed drinks are well done. Prices are totally reasonable -- and the happy hour lasts until 8:00 pm! Apparently, food is to come soon, and I am looking forward to it.
The crowd is young and hip and hangs out late. I was there recently on a Wednesday night and the place was jumping when I left shortly before midnight. At the same time, I was totally comfortable bringing my infant daughter during the earlier, after work hours. (Note: they no longer allow children after 5:30 pm.)
It's great to have (finally!) a decent place to go in WT.
Daniel! You beat me to it as 1st review... but only because once I got inside the Double Windsor I didn't want to leave. It was definitely worth the wait!
I concur that tonight was more like a reunion with my local neighbors and friends than a "soft opening". What a lovely place, looks like its been there for years but we know that it took a lot of effort for Jeff and the other guys to make it look like the cozy homey place that it is.
I'll see you at that great horseshoe bar and I even hear that there will be a special on the new menu... a $9.99 grass fed beef burger & fries plate.
Helloooo Windsor Terrace, we finally have a neighborhood bar to call our own. I'll update too, once Anthony finishes the electrical in the kitchen.
See you there!
YAY! DW finally opened! They have an extensive and very descriptive beer list that you can sample from if you ask nicely (I asked to taste 2 different ones and the bartender gave them to me without hesitation). They've consistently had special cocktails and will apparently have food sometime in the future. There are cozy 4-top tables, ample bar space, seats by the windows for good people watching and a big table in the middle that's great for a large group. This will be the go-to place after shows at the park or movies at the Pavillion.
Great beer selection, very friendly staff...just wait for the kitchen to open so that I can get a pie/burger to go with my beer. Highly recommended.
Our absolute new fave. Since moving from Portland, OR, (where, our spot was the unbeatable New Old Lompoc) we have been looking for a neighborhood pub that could be our very own, and we have found it at last! Awesome HH, from 5 to 7 $3 well and $2 off pints! Very perfect and it will now be our go-to place! Home at last.
Was only in for 1 drink. Nice crowd, good music. If I go back and stay longer, I would probably upgrade my rating.
Like others, I have eagerly awaited the opening of this bar. I finally got a chance to go on Thursday night.
The dark and stormy was terrific....after a long wait to get the bartender's attention (there were two of them).
The second one was not at all good, and it took MUCH longer to get the bartender's attention....when she asked what a dark and stormy WAS! It was on the (3 drink long) special list!!!!
The people at the next table said "I talked to her like a dog - loud and firm. She seemed to get it then." As horrible as that sounds, I must say that two bartenders between them should be able to handle a weeknight in Brooklyn.
Of course I will go back - its two blocks from my house! But for now, 12th street still has my heart.
