The Dog is a fantastic local spot on Belcourt Ave.  It's my spot for Sunday afternoons that lead into the evening.  Two for one on beer on Sunday, and always free wifi.

The veggie dogs are awesome.  The Not Dog is the veggie "Top Dog" of the menu.  A healthy take on the classic dog.  But you can substitute a veggie dog with any of the specialty dogs.  The Coney Island with a grilled veggie dog is awesome--tabasco onions and a house-made mustard.  Paired with a PBR (or two if it's Sunday), you can't go wrong.

A must-try--the homemade chips.  They are awesome.  These aren't your average potatoes.

To top off that dog, the staff has always been super-friendly, a great contrast to the staff at nearby Fido, and they always play great tunes.  They also will do large take-out orders.

My wife and I stopped by The Dog on a Saturday around 1 pm. They were quite busy; we had a Groupon, and apparently so did many of the other patrons. My wife and I had been to a baseball-themed wedding recently that had The Dog come and set up their cart, so this wasn't our first time having their dogs, just our first time in their bricks and mortar location. I elected to have the "Chi Town", their Chicago-style dog. My wife got their "Rise and Shine", a dog with a fried egg, bacon, and cheese sauce.

My Chicago dog was certainly one of the better ones I've had outside Chicago. They had real, Chicago poppyseed buns, and they used the perfect amount of celery salt. The pickle was a little disappointing, it was only about half the length of the dog and looked like it came from the reject pickle jar. The dog itself was tasty, big, and made with local beef...yum!

My wife's Rise and Shine was a great idea, the execution could have been a little better. The bacon either needs to be crispier or needs to be cooked to order; the piece she got wouldn't cut with her knife and when she finally just ate the bacon separately, it was tough and chewy.

They have a house made spicy beer mustard. It was quite good, and I recommend adding some to your dog if you like spicy mustard; I didn't get enough mustard on my Chicago dog and adding the beer mustard was perfect.

On economics...it's interesting when it costs 4$ to get a combo (tots+drink) when the dog costs 4.75. I understand that real estate adds a great deal more to overhead than a hot dog cart does, but my wife and I will probably not do the combos in the future, unless we have another Groupon.

I should open this review by saying I don't eat hot dogs. I've never had one of their hot dogs. Hot dogs are gross.

That said, their burgers are pretty sweet. Big, juicy, smothered in toppings and quality bacon....I'm a fan of the burgers. The sides and desserts are equally unhealthy, and I guarantee you'll leave needing a nap, some insulin, and some pepto.

Seating is limited, especially if you get there around the same time as the VUMC lunch rush, but the outdoor seating is perfect most of the time. There is wi-fi and multiple televisions, usually on a sports channel, and the stereo is usually playing a Pandora station (often "the Shins"). The vibe is casual gluttony, and the price isn't bad.

Parking is a bit of an issue, but get there in late afternoon/early evening, sit on the porch (next to the "Dove of Nashville"), and enjoy a really good meal.

Noshing on hot dogs are not a regular part of my diet but every now and then, I get a hankering for the "processed" stuff. And The Dog of Nashville fulfills my vegan cravings with the "Not Dog" which is a veggie dog on wheat bun topped with mustard, cucumber, lettuce, and tomato for $4.

You may also order any of their other specialty dog offerings by substituting the veggie dog instead of the meaty versions. I tried the "Philly" (minus the melted cheese) yesterday and enjoyed the robust toppings of mustard with sauteed peppers, mushrooms, and onions which just set me back $4.50. Trust me when I say the standout star of the menu has to be the tater tots ($2) which were perfectly crispy and salted to potato perfection.

You can ask my pals, I happen to be quite the tater tot connoisseur.
    Dead. Serious.

TIP: 2 fer 1 beer specials were offered when I arrived at 5pm!

Very dog-friendly patio as a neighborhood pup named Lefty hung around during our stay.

Went here today and sat outside on the patio. Great selection of dogs and they can be grilled, steamed or FRIED. The fried pickles and tator tots should not be missed as sides for your dogs. Their original dogs are all 1/4 lb and you also have the option to "build your own." bonus was the special today on 2-for-1 beers!

Five stars for knowing what it is - and going above and beyond.

When trying to decide between two dogs, I asked the employee behind the counter for his opinion, ad he just shrugged and stared at me. Thanks for trying to sell your own product man.

Fortunately I came to a decent decision without his help and got the slaw dog, which was pretty tasty. My boyfriend and I both agreed they had nice buns too- minds out of the gutter kids, we mean what they wrapped the hot dog in. They held together the whole way through the consuming of the dog despite my slaw and mustard and the onion juice and cheese grease from his Philly dog without being chewy. Overall good but not great. They have some interesting-looking variations I'd go back to try, and at just under $5 a dog, I think I will next time I'm in town.

Extensive menu. Sizable dogs. $4.25 is the average price. The hot dogs are made exclusively for them.

The Chi-Town is super authentic - complete with celery salt and a poppy seed bun. The Coney Island (sauerkraut and spicy onions) is also delicious. They have a new "around the world dog" daily. The fries are shoe-string and absolutely delicious - maybe the best in Nashville.

They sell beer and give away wifi access.

I love the Belcourt area. Partially because it reminds me of New Orleans, but mostly because it's tucked back in a cozy corner behind the muss and fuss (and traffic!) of Hillsboro Village.

And last night I found another reason why Belcourt makes me so happy.  This little home-turned-business is great.  Just to share with everyone, I'm a big advocate of hotdogs.  They are underrated, overprocessed, and so perfectly tasty.  The Dog of Nashville knows what's up!

I had the Chi Town, boyfriend had the Chili Dog, and we split tots.  A grand total of next to nothing (thanks to their ScoutMob deal - 100% free dog, dawg!).  And our meals were super filling and delicious.  I tried my first ever "sport" pepper, but I was pretty impressed with the sweet, spicy and savory mixture of it all!

The front porch was spotted with groups of people laughing and enjoying the cool, fall air.  I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed relaxing, eating the perfect american meal, and of course people watching.

I'll be back... and next time I'm going to man up and try a deep-fried hotdog!

Fun place, and it was a satisfying lunch.  I had the Buffalo dog!  No, it's not made of buffalo meat... It's a dog, deep-fried, covered in buffalo wing sauce, celery, and bleu cheese.

Alright alright, I opted to have an un-fried veggie dog rather than the fried beef, but it was still really, really good.  And I think it's wonderful to have so many topping and even bun options.  There were maybe four bun options, and I put my dog on french bread, which I HIGHLY recommend.

It's around $4.50, give or take, for a well-dressed gourmet hot dog.  Makes for a very inexpensive meal!  (I wouldn't know, since I went in with my Scoutmob deal.  My meal was not inexpensive, it was f"in FREE!)

I was avoiding anything considered too "unhealthy", but next time I'd love to try out the sides (sweet potato fries, etc.).

What not to love about hot dogs. Sure they have a bad rap and people swear that they hate them, but I'm proud to admit that hot dogs are delicious. And the dogs at The Dog of Nashville are not exception.

My girlfriend and I stopped in because of a ScoutMob deal that was running last week. One free hot dog! How awesome is that? I have walked past this place many times, but have never gone in. I didn't know what I was missing.

I ordered the Chili Dog and tots. First let me say that any place that has tots is considered a winner in my book. The dog was 100% beef and so was the chili. So, all pig lovers out there, have no fear.

My meal was delicious to say the least. Another plus, is that they has a good sized patio. So, if the weather's nice, head to the Dog of Nashville to some tasty bites!

Fantastic, fantastic spot. I fell in love with the Chicago-style hot dog on a trip to the Windy City several years ago, so I was quite relieved to discover an establishment closer to my hometown that served an authentic recreation.

The decor is pleasing, the staff is always nice and the food is always tasty.  It's also conveniently located down the street from the Belcourt Theater. A perfect weekend for me consists of taking in a show and having a dog afteward.

    What a delightful weiner!

Nothing says summer to me like a hot, juicy sausage. And - to me - there's no better place in Nashville to get your weiner on than at The Dog of Nashville.

Apparently there's an inside...I've seen it, but I've never had any desire to sit there. I mean, why sit inside when you can sit on their lovely outdoor porch while you eat a nice plump, juicy piece of meat.

Their menu features far more hot dogs than I have innuendos for - and you can get pretty much anything on the menu with a veggie, brat, polish sausage, hot dog, etc. (I don't actually know if there's an etc., but I feel like there's another option or two there). Plus, you can just make your own. The point is, you can go here every day and try a different weiner and not have the same one twice. No repeat weiners here.

And when you get a weiner - I recommend you sauce it up with some of The Dog's Yazoo Dos Perros beer mustard...trust me. It's almost as fantastic as the weiner itself.

Thirsty, you'll be! Not to worry...it's pretty much always 2-for-1 at The Dog.

So go to The Dog and grab your weiner. Do it now!

One of the best Chicago dogs I've had outside Chicago.  Their hot mustard will also light you on fire but it is so so good.  Try two different dogs and the onion rings.  You won't need to eat your next couple of meals but it will be worth it.

The hot diggitys were delicious. I had the corn dog and chips. Both were homemade and the cornbread on the dog was perfect. My fiance got the CHicago dog... he was impressed. The buffalo chips were soggy and not as good as the regulars. The fried pickles were good, but not as good as the ones at Burger Up. The girl that waited on us... total snot. She practically threw my receipt at me. She hated life. I see there's another dog place here in Nashville. Might go there next time. Except I really liked that corn dog! And patio!

I used to live in Chicago and this place hits the spot!  The dogs themselves taste really good and they offer plenty of toppings, and seasonal specials.  They offered a Hawaiian dog when I was there last.  This is the first hot dog place I've been to in Nashville, and it'll likely be the only one I go to.  It's just that good!

After spending the morning shopping for cowgirl boots - we had worked up an appetite... my sister recommended The Dog near Vandy.

The Dog is located in an unassuming house - you order at the counter and your food is brought to your table.  The menu is fairly simple with about 10 hot dog options to choose from - dogs we had included: Slaw Dog, Chi Dog, Corn Dog and Rise & Shine - all were DELICIOUS!  We shared a basket of tater tots and had a few cold beers.

The Dog of Nashville is perfect when you're looking for a simple lunch spot!

Pros: patio seating, TV's to watch sports and fried Oreos for dessert!!

Really enjoy this place and have been back quite a few times. I love that they have something new to offer every month, and they come up with some great combinations. Beyond the obvious choice of hot dogs, they also have yummy burgers, onion rings, and I LOVE the homemade chips- try them buffalo style! It's a great spot to grab a bite before a movie at The Belcourt Theater, or just any time you're in the area. Also, I'm a total sucker for Corn Dogs and theirs are ridiculously tasty.

Oh! And they have their own mascot- a dove who has made her nest in the corner of the porch. So fun!

I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could.

I love hot dogs and being from Chicago, I love me some Chicago-style hot dogs!

When I got to The Dog of Nashville, I was happy to see the Chi-Town Dog prepared on a poppy-seed bun, with tomatoes, relish, and a pickle spear.  It's a pretty good replication of Chicago hot dogs, but I still miss Maxwell's and Jim's (if you're a Chicago native, you've gotta know about these 24-hour hot dog stands) and their 2 dollar hot dogs with fries.

Though, I do like the innovative creations they have been doing with the Around the World dogs each week.  I think I had the China dog about a week ago, and I was disappointed,  But still give them props for creating various ethnic-style dogs.

We got a cool Scoutmob coupon for a free hotdog, so it seemed an opportune time to check out the Dog of Nashville.
Cute little restaurant on a great street-- that was the first thought. Loved the decor and vibe within the eatery. We ordered a classic Chicago (Chi-Dog) and a North Carolina Dog (on special) and an order of Tator Tots (mostly to just play homage to the cafeteria days of grade school). The menu was extensive for hotdogs-- many different varieties and a good offering of fried accouterments-- or if you're not feeling the hotdog vibe, they have hamburgers, too. I even noticed a veggie dog on the menu, so the options are pretty limitless. If you're feeling crafty you can build your own dog, which I'll be sure to try next time. Beer selection was pretty good-- mostly micros and specialties, but there were some "classics" on the menu as well.
The dogs were delicious-- well cooked, nicely packed full of toppings. The tots were equally yummy. We noticed the prices were all around $4-$5 per dog, tots were $2, and they had a build a combo option. While we got ours for free (score) it definitely made us want to come back again to re-experience the dog.

    Pros: they have veggie dogs.
Cons: the veggie dogs are kind of tasteless, just a delivery system for condiments.

Can't comment on how good the non-veggie dogs are, I have friends who love it and friends who say it's ok.  The place is pretty cool, parking would be hell at most times people want to eat.  It's supposedly a great place for kids.

The condiments are ok, nothing super special.  When I've been it's been deserted, but I'm told that's not normally the case.

If you see some people looking around the place on their hands and knees as though they've lost something but are trying not to be noticed looking, ignore them.  There's something hidden there, they don't know what it is though so they can't tell you what they're looking for.  The manager can tell you but won't tell you where it is.

Pretty decent place, I'll give it another few tries, hopefully they'll get slightly better veggie dogs in the future, although I don't know that these things exist.

Slight upgrade here. I've been back a few times since my last review and I think the dog is worthy of another star. Why? I finally tried the onion rings. Wow! I fully expected mediocrity but I have to say they are exceptional. The batter is a deeper brown, not golden, and it doesn't fall apart. There was a slight bit of salt too which added a nice finishing touch. I'm impressed.

As mentioned in the previous review the dogs here are pretty good. I still think hot diggity is a better option for a pure hot dog however the great side options such as the onion rings, homemade chips, and homemade buffalo chips really make the dog a winner.

I'm not a huge fan of hot dogs but I stopped by The Dog this afternoon to have lunch with my co-workers.  I ordered the fiery redneck, a dog with chili, cheese, onions, jalapenos and mustard.  I must say it was a tasty fiery little dog.  I tried the buffalo chips which were interesting but I I kept thinking they should have been served warm.

I'm not a hot dog lover unless it's Chicago-style being the misplaced Chicagoan that I am. However, I bought a Groupon for The Dog, seeing as how my beloved husband loves a good hot dog.

We made use of our Groupon on a busy Friday night and trekked on over to The Dog. I have to say I was impressed with the number of things one can do with a hot dog. I had no idea you could make it such a specialty item. After all, I'm the kind of person who places a hot dog on a bun, covers it in some ketchup and maybe a little mustard, and calls it good. But I ordered the Buffalo Dog, the hubby got the Chi Town, we ordered some onion rings, and decided to split an order of deep fried Oreos. Now, any menu including something like deep fried Oreos is already winning, in my opinion, so I already had high expectations.

I have to say we'll be going back. The onion rings were hot, fresh, and not over-fried, the deep fried Oreos were ooey-gooey goodness, and my Buffalo Dog was quite tasty with its combo of bleu cheese, ranch dressing, buffalo sauce, and ranch dressing. Yum! I don't think the hubby liked his Chi Town as much because it wasn't actually a true Chicago-style dog. Still, we came away happy, full, and content. Congrats to The Dog for earning two more customers.

Great little hot dog join in Nashville...might have gotten 5 stars except for the White Sox paraphanelia throughout.

I went at 1130 on a Friday and there was no line.

I had the Rise and Shine, since I had already missed breakfast and the Barnyard.

The Rise and Shine features a bacon wrapped dog with melted cheese and a fried egg. When I eat breakfast, I usually I like my egg to break a little bit but was really happy that this one didn't because it would have just been a mess.

The Barnyard featured a 1/4 pound dog topped with pulled pork, slaw and barbecue sauce. The sauce was really tangy which I liked.

I got a side of tots. How can you go wrong with tots?

They do have a couple of side sauces, a dog sauce which didn't have that much flavor and a mustard which had a ton of wasabi in it and cleared the sinuses.

Overall, a good experience and I would recommend it.

I used to dream of opening a hot dog joint.  then the dog opened and I gave up.  How could I possibly compete?  The Dog is great.  Top quality dogs and the grass fed burgers are from the owner's own cattle.  Whatever regional style of dog you like is represented.  Go grilled for better flavor. I usually go with the slaw dog, since I'm from Alabama, but the bacon wrapped was a fun change of pace.  (That was years ago and my triglycerides are still lingering).  The house beer mustard is hot but addictive.  Dip it on your fries for a treat.  Lick it out of the cup when you run out of fries.  It's that good.

Do yourself a favor and hit the Dog next time you are in Hillsboro Village.

I would come here with my vegetarian friends.  The corn dog was big, amazing and oh so cheap!  Add to that a side of tots and I'm thinking, 'where's my Bayer because all this grease is going to give me a heart attach!'

Be prepared for fried food galore and hot dogs covered in just about anything you want. I had the "Diet Starts Tomorrow", which had an overwhelming amount of nacho cheese atop a fried dog with bacon. I wised up the second time around and got the corndog, which was pretty much the best one I've ever had. The batter was amazing. The onion rings are my favorite side, followed by the tots. Eating in or taking out is both easy, although finding parking around Hillsboro Village is always a challenge. Overall, a good addition around Vandy campus!

My baseball team is in the play-offs so I've been craving some stadium food.  Today in anticipation of tonight's game I really wanted a hot dog and thought I would give "The Dog of Nashville" a try.   I ordered a grilled beef hot-dog with chopped onions, banana peppers, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese and mustard, and as an after-thought, since I had the day off (exercise included), an order of onion rings and a Stella to wash it down.  I chose a table outside on the patio/porch and watched people strolling along the sidewalk to the Village while I waited a short while for my food.  So relaxing to sip my beer and soak up some Vitamin D on a gorgeous fall afternoon!  When my lunch arrived I was in Hot Dog Heaven.  It was notches above any stadium food, healthiest hot dog I've ever eaten...perfectly grilled hot dog with crunchy skin on the outside and juicy and flavorful on the inside, topped with fresh ingredients on a bun that was soft but sturdy enough to handle the toppings.  I was pleasantly surprised with the onion rings...great batter and you could actually taste the flavor of the sweet yellow onions.  I will definitely return and add it to my list of places to take "Out-Of-Towners."  In addition, I noticed they offer free Wi-Fi...MLB.com!   GO CARDINALS!  (updated side note:  the Cards won tonight so I will DEFINITELY be back tomorrow...the whole mojo thing...)

I've had a friend accuse me of being a foodie, which may very well be true, but... I still really love me some hotdogs. I don't care if they're made from the leftover bits of animals that can't otherwise be sold for consumption, there is something about grilled meat in tube form that is immensely satisfying AND delicious. Thankfully The Dog of Nashville agrees and has made it their business to showcase this wonderful foodstuff.

Located on Belcourt Avenue, The Dog is a wonderful spot to grab lunch or dinner, and when the weather is nice, their patio is a great place to hangout to enjoy a few beers along with your hotdog of choice. Bonus points for it being puppy dog friendly as well! I love the little twinkle lights that they have draped about, which may seem a bit upscale for a hotdog joint but hey, they're pretty and I appreciate the whimsy they add.

As for the food, well, it's hotdogs (mostly... you can also generally get a burger or a cheesteak sandwich, and if you've got a cast iron stomach, I highly recommend the homemade buffalo potato chips which are addictive even if they are devilishly spicey), but the variety is astounding. You can always build your own, but there are a few "pre-built" varieties that should suit practically any mood you might have. If you're feeling low key, the Chi-town or the Slaw dog are always solid choices... if you're feeling naughtier, then you might want to check out the Barnyard or the Rise and Shine dog (which comes with a fried egg). Of late, one of my favorite things that The Dog has been doing is their "Around the World in 40 Dogs" promotion, where every week or so they have a featured hot dog that is inspired by the cuisine of a different location. I've enjoyed their Vietnam dog as well as their California and German dogs; all have featured homemade condiments that really dress up the dogs and pay great homage to their countries of inspiration. It's also a great excuse to hit this place up on a weekly basis!

This may not be a Michelin-star type restaurant, but the food is delicious, the staff is friendly, and the location is killer. Prices are also really reasonable, and if you happen to get a combo, the shoestring fries are crispy and delectable (though the tots aren't a bad choice either). It may not be the healthiest option for dining out, but the food tastes so good, you won't find yourself regretting the indulgence.

Overall: If you like hotdogs and don't mind thinking outside the box for toppings, you're good to go.

Food: I usually get the Vienna Beef hotdog, grilled, and then add all kinds of stuff on top. A friend of mine got "the diet starts tomorrow" and, while i didn't try it, it did look pretty darn good. I've also tried the veggie dogs and they're some of the best I've had (not sure what brand, though.) A warning about the buffalo chips - they're SUPER DUPER spicy. (It's a container of chips that's absolutely drenched in buffalo sauce) As far as sides go, both the onion rings and tater tots get a thumbs up. They have beer specials (2-fers) pretty often so that's a plus.

Location/Service: It can be a little tricky to find a place to park during peak times (especially on weekends.) Everyone that I've encountered there has been nice and willing to make suggestions if you can't make a decision. I like the outdoor seating, but if there's a game on they have big TVs inside you can watch.

While the Dog of Nashville has been on Belcourt Ave for a bit, I never got around to trying it until last week.  Sure, I had sampled their fare at festivals around town when they appeared as food vendors, but never actually ventured over to their cozy spot in Hillsboro Village.  To me, hot dogs have always been a spur-of-the moment food decision - something you grab when you're at a baseball game or walking by a hot dog stand, but nothing you necessarily plan to go out to eat.  But now that I've visited the Dog of Nashville, I can promise I'll be making more hot dog-eating plans soon.

My #1 favorite thing was of course how delicious everything was, but a close #2 was how darn cheap it was too.  Most of the "top dogs" are about $4 or $4.50 - add tater tots ($2) and a soda ($1.29) and you have a bargain of a meal.  The menu is extensive enough that it would take you more than a dozen visits to try all the options that look tasty to you, and you can try any of the topping combinations with a veggie dog if you're a vegge yourself.

I tried the Y'all Dog - a polish sausage stuffed in a hollowed-out French bread bun with some spicy house sauce, along with a side of crispy little tater tots (WAY better than the ones you ate in your grade school cafeteria).

And I'll be back soon for sure - they're in the midst of "Around the World in 30 Dogs," with a new special dog every week.  According to their facebook, this week is the Argentina Dog, topped with marinated and grilled skirt steak, housemade chimichurri and potato sticks. Um, YUM.

Anyone can make a hot dog, but The Dog of Nashville takes your regular hot dog and dresses it up in all sorts of different combinations.

I've been twice and only tried The Diet Starts Tomorrow. It's call that for a reason. If you like bacon and nacho cheese, then add a hot dog and voila! It's super delicious.

I keep thinking that the service is slow, but that's only because it's setup like a fast food restaurant where you order at a cashier, instead of waiter service. Really, the service is just right for food that is not already prepared.

I haven't tried any of their desserts, but they sure look tempting. (BTW, the desserts aren't listed on the menu on their website.)

Parking is difficult to find sometimes. Just make sure that you pay for your space if you park in the lot behind Belcourt, otherwise you'll have a surprise on your window when you return to your car.

My friend lives in Nashville and she brought us here.  I was super-psyched because I am pregnant and had been craving corn dogs for WEEKS.  It definitely left little to be desired.  The batter/coating was lacking in flavor.  I give this place points for a cool location, design, and variety of the hot dogs on the menu.

Just don't get the corn dog....blech!
