So good! So good!
The Dog House is a classic. It's a throw back, from the sweet and courteous gentleman taking orders to the concession stand attendant keeping things neat and as clean as can be.
And then there's the food... It's awesome. I generally order either the split dog or a grilled cheese and tomato if have been in within the last few days. The lemonade is perfectly refreshing, and from time to time I'll stop in for just that on my way by. The onion rings (onion strings) and fries (hand cut/ rustic) are great, and the coleslaw is also a winner.
As for lines, I just eat off peak and don't have any problems. Just before close seems to work well. (It nearly kills me to give away this tactical gem.) It's popular for a reason, and well worth the wait.
Note: Closed Tuesdays, which is fairly common in the area.
First off, let me address the wait issue. Of course there is a wait during the height of tourist season for such a great little spot! If you didn't want to wait in line, you should have pulled away when you pulled in and saw the line. You ARE on Cape Cod in the summertime! Personally, I've never been bothered by it and usually only wait around 15 minutes from start to finish.
Now onto the service. The guy at the counter has been there forever, is very kind, and takes such pride in his business which is a great change! The place is IMMACULATE, they always have someone assigned specifically to keeping the condiment area, picnic tables, and waiting area clean. There is literally NEVER a mess anywhere.
The food is great! The hot dogs in buttery grilled buns... mmmm!! Chili dogs are great, the burgers are tasty and the fried dough is the best you'll find on cape!
Overall, a great little hangout and well worth the wait!
The Dog House is one of my favorite places to grab a quick bite on Cape Cod. I stop here at least once each summer, and the quality is consistent and reliable.
I like my hot dogs burnt, charred to a blackened crisp. Every time, I forget that they don't tend to burn their dogs (they're actually on the underdone side), and I forget to request an extra-burnt dog. That's just my preference. They toast the buns, which is nice.
Fries are hand-cut and really good. Always fresh, crispy and piping hot. They also have fried dough that I'm pretty sure is homemade (yum).
As others have said, the wait is unnecessary. Even when you're the only diner waititng, it still takes very long. Outside tables are plentiful.
Wicked good food. Good prices and Fast. Kids meals are a little pricey. Great place for lunch after a morning at the beach. gets very busy though from 12:30 - 2:00
Minus two for the wait. Really. It was that long. My boyfriend and I started eating our dill pickle relish with our fingers we were waiting so long.
Besides that BS, the hot dogs snap when you bite them, the condiment selection is unbelievable and has tons of Key West hot sauces, the old man taking orders was so nice I couldn't bring myself to sass him after waiting in line for 20 minutes, the onion rings are the best I've ever had and they offer coloring sheets and crayons for the kids waiting.
Cash only. DON'T come starving. You'll faint before your food comes.
Perfectly buttered and grilled buns, incredible selection of condiments, and great staff. The older man that takes your order is extremely nice and helpful if you're not sure what to eat. I haven't been in a while so I can't attest to the wait, but I'm sure it's rough during the summer. All of the food is great so it's worth it though. Check it out. A staple for the Cape in during Summertime.
I will never again go here when there is any sort of a line. I was at least 12th in line, hoping it would move fairly quickly. Boy was I wrong; I was in line a good 20-25 minutes in the hot sun just to order my takeout. After that ordeal, I went to find a place to sit and a friendly guy was telling me that he'd been waiting for his for food 30 minutes already. I felt bad for him but thought he was surely exaggerating, there's no way a hot dog could take that long, especially after already so long in line to order the food in the first place. Nope...wrong again. I was there for 35 minutes before I got my meal. All in all, it took an hour just for one order of chicken fingers and fries (yes, that's right, I got chicken fingers at a hot dog joint. I changed my mind 4 times while I was in line staring at the menu). And that doesn't include the time it took to eat it (which didn't take very long because I was STARVING by then).
So, my point is...don't be fooled by the fast food atmosphere of the Dog House with the outside order window and the picnic tables. They do advertise that everything is made fresh to order so I'll give them props for that but I think I could have gone to the store and made my own chicken fingers faster than that. They need to figure out some way to expedite the process, especially during the height of the season. I'll go back but only when there's a much smaller line.
By the way, the chicken was good, not spectacular. I have been there a couple of years ago and have had a hot dog, I think remember it being pretty good.
What could be better than a hot dog and cup of lemonade on a hot day in the cape? Nothing if you make a quick stop at the dog house. Lines of a mix of locals and tourists form outside this quaint shack off Lower County Rd. You can't beat the ambiance of pulling up a bench at a picnic table and biting into this places speciality the junkyard dog. Whoever thought of the idea of cutting up chunks of hot dog, mixing them with fried onions and peppers and then covering the whole thing with bacon and cheese is a friend of mine. Some other things to note... Awesome hand battered onion rings and a killer condiment bar (dill and sweet relish anyone?). Next time your in the cape, check out the dog house.
