Truly the Diamond is a jem!

Love this bar so much, it's definitely one of my favorites. Cozy interior with a beautiful oval wooden bar and nice tables. Neat backyard where you can play horseshoe and sit in a ferris wheel car!

But the best part about this place is the shuffleboard. You might have to wait to play it, but it's worth it. I've had a ton of fun playing shuffleboard with my friends here.

It's disappointing to see that this place is getting more and more crowded recently...I've even seen guys come from NJ to come here and they hogged the shuffleboard table (against the rules!) and yelled while playing it (also against the rules!). If you come here, read the shuffleboard rules and follow them!

Get drunk and practice the zen art of sliding metal pucks along sandy wood-grain tables.

Great beer selection, if you can pronounce the beers.  "Ex-PEN-sive."

Practice the other zen art of sneaking a second game before the people in line after you notice.

Oh, and definitely check out the backyard ski-lift gondola.

A good beer centric bar in a kind-of random part of what I believe is Greenpoint.  For someone who spends quite a bit of time in NYC, it took some time to find it, I could only imagine a complete tourist.
Anyhow, this spot is fairly small, but has a nice outdoor area in the back.  Beer and wine, no hard booze.  A small tap selection, 6 or so.  And a decent bottle selection.  Prices are high on these beverages, even for New York.  Its worth checking out, but understandably annoys some with hit or miss service and lack of depth in their tap list.

Hands down, one of my favorite bars in town.

The place is beautiful on the inside.  Very cool curved bar, awesome mural on the wall by the SHUFFLEBOARD TABLE (!!!) some pretty sweet art hung on the walls and an overall classy interior.

The backyard is amazing.  They have an old gondola from a ski mountain up by Lake Placid (see my photos added).  You can sit in it and smoke ciggs.  Or you can relax on one of the many wooden benches and picnic tables.  They also have a horse-shoe type game all the way in the back.  The back wall of the backyard is an old factory wall with ivy growing all over it.  The picnic tables are painted this awesome vibrant orange color.  On certain days in the summer (i forget which days, sorry) they have a beer-soaked bratwurst cookout.  For $5 you can get these enormous bratwursts that are delicious and juicy and right off the grill.  No joke, these are so juicy that a bite out of one of these brats spewed a stream of juice and soaked my friend's shirt about 4 feet away.

The drink selection is great, and they often have a beer on happy hour special for $3.  Nice wine and liquor list as well.

My only gripe with this place is the cheese and charcuterie plate.  The cheese is off the hook....you get 3 small slabs of cheese with it.  The cheese is great, but the slabs are tiny.  Check the chalkboard, the cheeses rotate.  Sadly, the charcuterie is a joke.  You get one thick flabby slice of some sopressata that resembled spam.  Nothing sharp or tasty about that meat whatsoever.  The guy who prepared my plate when I ordered it seemed to have no idea how to hold a knife, and made absolutely no attempt to slice it thin (how cured meat should be).  For $12, I was unhappy with the plate.  I devoured it, but wouldn't order it again.

Other than this sopressata travesty, this place f*cking rules.

The drink selection is good. The food selection is minimal, but whateves, it's a bar. The location is a bit out of the way, but I can see that it's a good neighborhood spot. The service is really poor. The inside layout is a bit odd. The arched bar takes up most of the space and there is a corner in the back that is pretty spacious, but can only really fit two tables. It's ok though, because they have a lovely back patio.

Now back to the service - we went early on a Friday night, where I'd say it was busy, but not packed. There was one bartender, but then we discoverd there were two other employees milling around. One at the barbecue in the back. The bartender was kind of moody and was pretty good at ignoring me and my friend when we kept trying to order a drink. It was like he was going to everyone around us, except us. My friend, who is extremely easygoing, was actually getting annoyed. We ordered a bite to eat through him too, which seemed to throw him off. He got one of the other dudes to take care of it. Also, he would take people's orders and then ask the customer to look on the menu for the price, which was odd. Maybe he was new?

They have a shuffleboard table and a lovely patio. If you manage to get yourself a drink from the bar, then you're good to go.

Beautiful patio, great vibe and good selection - so good, in fact, I'm willing to overlook the fact that the bartender was kind of a bitch, which seems to be a thing lately. I'm getting used to it though. Give me some time, I've only been living here for six months.

At least it's only beer and wine, which can't be fucked up, unlike mixed drinks, which female bartenders in Williamsburg and Greenpoint seem to routinely insist on serving extremely watered down (you know something's wrong if you weigh 118 lbs and you're not even buzzed after 6 whiskey gingers in quick succession).

    Anyway.

I'll definitely be back, since I've only tried one of the reds, a very dry selection (I don't remember the name) which wasn't really my thing but did the job. The Diamond is a little out of the way of everything, but then again it's a great excuse to get on my bike, knock back a few enjoy a tipsy ride home.

This place has a very relaxed atmosphere about it. The music is not too loud, so you can enjoy your conversation. There was a wonderful keyboard player playing what sounded like a Fender Rhodes on my first visit.

The bar is a nice break from the ordinary. It's well stocked with imports and micro-brews. The barteners even offered samples, which is great when your not familiar with the line up. Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is worth a try if your a bacon lover. The resemblence is amazing.

I've been here a few times now over the years; I like it. Nice semicircular bar, shuffleboard, backyard, always some interesting beers.

I only today realized they serve only beer and wine, however-- I was hoping for a bloody mary.

But Ladies & Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains was being projected on the wall. So that was a nice surprise. I liked the bartender, too.

My home away from home. Dave & his wife are probably the coolest in the neighborhood. The steady stream of quality beer, the warm & unpretentious ambiance, the shuffleboard & the backyard keep me coming back. At least once a week.

Some things that add to this awesome-ness:

The Diamond is always teaming up with neighborhood businesses for benefits, be they dance parties or bake sales. I was there this past Saturday for an incredible event - Kill Devil Hill representatives DJing and pulling out raffle tickets. The prizes included wares from many Greenpoint establishments. Amazing.

And the kicker? $3.00 chili bowls on Monday nights. Delicious hearty dinner under 5 bones? Hellz yes! Paired with a happy hour brew, or a Southern Tier Winter for $5.00, you have a solid Monday evening pick me up!

I love you, Diamond. I hope you love me.

Edit: It has come to my attention that the red phone on the wall is in fact a direct line to Grace Jones. Who knew? The only problem is that she must call you. And really, sitting at the bar drinking waiting for Grace Jones to call... What could be better.

But you better have a good question ready, or she will likely kick your ass.

And now back to your regular review....

The Diamond is named after Diamond Dave, or as most know him, David Lee Roth. Yet somehow I really like and enjoy this bar.

The space is quite cozy, but not cramped. The bar itself is curved, semi-circle like, and amazingly beautiful. Other than ancient old mahogany bars. which I normally really like, this is the best bar I have seen in a long time. It is sleek, modern, functional, and classy.

The real thing here though are the beers. They have a thoughtfully selected eight taps, Normally there are 4 session beers (under 6%, and ones that you can drink many of in a session; hence, the name) and 4 strong beers, though this sometimes gets skewed to 5/3 on either side.

Dave, the owner, only puts up what he really enjoys to drink or what he thinks he will. And this really adds to the whole vibe of the place, as he writes short succinct descriptions of each on chalkboards. This also goes for the bottles as well. And do make sure you read them, as many are hysterically funny and quite apt.

They do a bit of food here too. It mainly revolves around a soup or stew, some Australian pies (both veggie and non), a cheese plate, and a pickle plate from The Pickle Guys. Now I love pickles. A lot. A whole lot, in fact. But the pickle guys have never really done it for me. And these are more of the same. I have not partaken in any of the other offerings, but they have some crazy oven that cooks with infrared light that I can not help staring at when it flashes on and off.

The shuffleboard table seems ever so popular, but is just a space filler in my mind. But if other people like it than so be it.

The ongoing mural above the shuffleboard table is shear whack-a-doddle. There is Geddy Lee, playing the bass on top of a Datsun 240z, which I am sure he does quite often in real life. No really. Diamond Dave also makes an appearance along with a few other pictures that will make your eyes bulge out a bit whilst you silently wonder, 'wtf....'

They have a back yard, which is nice, but normally there are smokers out there. To which i say a hardy BOOOOOOOOO!!! But in the warmer weather months I am sure it serves its purpose.

The jukebox is average. No selections out of the realm of most bar jukeboxes. But there is far too much Van Halen. And when it is not playing your songs, the bartenders pipe in music through ipods, from which I have heard everything from The fall to Chicago, Guided by Voices to Love.

One of the coolest things is that the bathroom is decorated with cassette tapes on the walls. The tapes seriously cover the gamete of taped music, from Ministry - the 12 inch singles to Phil Collins - No Jacket Required (though the last one might have been jacked by the throngs of Phil Collins fans in the neighborhood, as I do not remember seeing it there the last few times I have gone).

All in all, this is a very nice bar, off the beaten path and well worth your effort in getting to.

    San Francisco, CA

    5.0 star rating

As far as neighborhood bars go, The Diamond is pretty fantastic. I'm a New Yorker by birth, but I've been living out in beautiful, sunny San Francisco for the past five years. I don't often daydream of moving back, but the times I've spent on the back patio at this fine establishment have made it a lot easier for the gears in my mind to slip backwards into that line of thought.

Let's get one thing straight here: San Francisco does neighborhood bars CORRECT. I've never lived in or visited another city where people put so much stock into time well spent together at a local watering hole. I don't go out as frequently as I used to, but I know each & every bar up & down my street intimately. I'm familiar with their subtleties & quirks & differences (from & with one another), their changes over the years I've been here, & their aspirations for the future, some good & some bad.

There aren't too many bars in NYC -- a city where anonymity is the norm, whether you treat it like a prized possession or a curse -- which allow for intimacy. There is no premium put on personal space, because we are all stuck with one another & that's that. Somehow, the Diamond pulls it off, though. I've been twice now (a good buddy from SF lives a few blocks away & when I make it to BK, we tend to meet for a few pints here).

They've got a constantly rotating selection of reasonably priced microbrews & a brick-lined back patio with some brightly colored picnic tables (& what appears to be a gondola, randomly). They even have a raised upper level with gravel pit & horseshoe toss. Most importantly, there's plenty of room to spread out & enjoy some beer in the sunshine. I've been lucky enough to bring nice weather back with me on most of the trips home I've taken. Also of note is the tiling job in the restroom. The walls are completely covered in old cassette tapes (a few blank spots not withstanding, where someone decided they wanted to steal one).

I would be proud to call The Diamond my neighborhood bar. But they'd have to up & move out to the Bay first.

Diamond is a very new bar to Greenpoint, located a few blocks away from the rest of the bars in the area, but you can't miss it - the facade is painted black and the door bright yellow. As of now they just have beer and wine, but the beer selection is quite large and unique. There are only about 5 wines to choose from but I enjoyed my glass of rose. They have shuffleboard and a really nice patio out back, as well a jukebox with a good selection. They only opened 2 or 3 weeks ago, but this past Saturday night had a pretty good crowd. I think it'll be a great neighborhood bar.

1/2/08: Adding to my review because The Diamond is becoming quite the Greenpoint hotspot. I've been back several times since my initial review. The wine list has grown and they have some snacks as well - cheeses and such - which I haven't tried but will. Also there is a basement that isn't comfortable (cement floor & walls), but there is usually something fun going on down there....zombie movies showing on Halloween, dancing on New Year's. One minus about The Diamond is only ONE bathroom for the whole bar...meaning long lines when it's crowded.

Also I suppose I should disclose that my friend's husband's friend owns the place, but I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet.

Only came here for the first time last night, but was definitely favorably impressed with:
    A) the super mellow atmosphere (one other person at the bar at 7.30 on a thursday night, and a few more outside).
    B) the obviously super smart beer selections, many of which I had never laid eyes on before, including the only italian beer i have ever seen which is darker than a peroni, and a fantastic Kolsch in 0.2 L, $3 doses.
    C) way personable and friendly service from the bartender.
    D) rows of cassette tapes lining the bathroom wall, at least as eclectic a selection as the beer
    E) the CHEESE AND CHARCUTERIE PLATE. which apparently is changed up regularly, but last night included of an incredible old pecorino, an downright evil blue cheese,  and a near candy-like brie.

we can't wait to go back for more awesome beer and the very promising-looking list of savory pies!

    Pretty much the perfect bar.

They have a great beer selection, which is constantly rotated and they even have a list specifically of "session beers" which are lower in alcohol for when you are going to be drinking for a while and want to maintain.

The shuffleboard table is pretty easy to get on which is nice.

The backyard is a true gem, they have multiple large benches which makes it easy to come with a larger group.  They also have horseshoe toss.

The bathroom is so clean it is almost weird, most rad bars like this have a bathroom that makes you want to puke but they actually take the time to clean it which just adds to the overall cool vibe.

I think my favorite part of this bar might be the large colored lightbulb artwork on wall opposite the bathroom.

This place is cool! They just serve beer and wine, so unless there's another bar that offers to-go cups, you won't be drinking cocktails here. But that's cool. They've got yard games to be played in the back yard, a jukebox with a pretty awesome selection (any jukebox that features Gorilla Biscuits and Descendents gets major points from me), and quality beers. I went kind of early in the evening, so it wasn't super-crowded, but I could see the place getting packed as the night wore on.

Anyway, cool bar, definitely a place to check out.

There are a few reasons why I like this place.

    1) It's really clean. Compared to other places in the area, it's pretty much immaculate.

    2) Usually a pretty interesting mix of people. Once I met this nice couple who let their dogs sit on the bar stools. Usually I would be peeved, but, I definitely didn't mind standing and sharing a drink with these two. Pet peeves aside :)

    3) Double doors leading to the backyard. You don't even have to go single file. You could even link arms and skip through if you want.

    4) Random air tram that serves as strange Nunni-like seating for four in said backyard.

    5) Half pints of beer -- good for when you need to take it easy.

    6) It's just far enough off the beaten path to keep it neighborhood-only, and its not so super awesome that people have to take a special G train trip and loudly ask everyone they see how you get there and then screech to their friends 'ohmigod I heard this place is SO COOL'. (sidenote:: this unfortunately applies to many Greenpoint establishments as of late)

I'd add shuffleboard to the list, but I've never gotten a chance to play.

I hereby proclaim The Diamond as my new favorite establishment.

    1. The beer. 8 drafts, all rare amazing brews. For example, Avery Kaiser Imperial Octoberfest, and Souther Tier Imperial Pumpking.

    2. Cheese / Salumi plates. Delicious.

    3. Shuffleboard. It really makes this place a must-stop attraction. I have a new favorite game.

    4. Mellow vibe, not too loud and very friendly staff.

    5. Rad street sign.

Nice place!  Diamond Dave is really cool and will tell you anything you could ever want to know about the beers he has, and he has quite a few.  They even have a gueze.

The food is pretty good.  Another commenter mentioned the cleanliness of the place.  I never even thought about it but yeah, it is really clean which is nice.

Good people.  I've run into so many friends I haven't seen in a while there too.  Pretty cool.  They put on fun events, like shuffleboard tournaments and dance parties with the folks from Kill Devil Hill.

I love the gondola carriage in the back yard.  Just sitting in it is fun for some reason.  Novelty!

It is beer and wine only - no liquor.

I love this bar.  I love it so much that I am moving back to Greenpoint.  Well there are other reasons (like my boyfriend) but this bar being here is helping.  I like it almost as much as I like my boyfriend actually.

I am obsessed with beer and they have the best beers here ever.  And they constantly change.  it is like heaven.  I go here about once a week after work and on the days I am planning to go I daydream about what beers they are going to have.  Also there is something about their taps that makes their beer better than other bars, I'm thinking it probably has something to do with cleaning them well and using the right amount of carbonation or whatever.  But it has basically made me think beer everywhere else almost sucks, which is kind of a bad thing I guess.

And they have an awesome yard and shuffleboard.  And I love it.  If it ever closes down I will possibly die.

I love this place. Pretty much everything I love has been said in the other reviews. The beer selection is amazing, and the rotating draft lines are great for trying new beers. The bartender was SO NICE! Wow, imagine if every bar learned that when a customer walks in, and the bartender is super friendly, the customer will be very happy. Awesome outdoor patio and super clean/cool bathrooms. Plus their prices are VERY reasonable for craft beer. My friend and I each got one beer on draft and then we split a large bottle: $32
The overall vibe was really chill and un-pretentious... if only it were closer to where I live...

I love having this bar in my neighborhood! It's conveniently located at the far end of my street, and the beer selection is excellent. I've visited the bar probably 10 or so times and I can usually get a seat and hear my companions, though it does get crowded later in the evenings. If you're with a group, I recommend the tray of beers-solid German brew, quaint European style glasses, and a fair price.
I haven't yet tried the food, so I can't say anything on that point. However, the shuffle board is pretty cool, the Lite Brite wall is awesome, and the back garden is delightful in good weather.

This place is on Metric Standard Time,

The Back yard and shuffleboard give it the 2 stars.

I like the backyard- it reminds me of the way old school Italians create terraces out back lick they used to have in Potenza-

I got an IPA draft, $7 and it was given to me in a 10 oz glass.
Im not paying and extra 2 bucks because theres a cool multi-colored installation art piece inspired by an anti-Rothko fan.

This place is Kadinskys anti-christ, its a place where Lichtenstein would have a field day drawing his late 1980's Burger King cartoon-type humanoid figures.

I just wasn't thrilled at this spot- the crowed was wak and the girls were tryin to talk extra-intellectual, cmon how cliche is it to talk about artists when it doesn't pertain to the subject??? who does that??

    Awesome beer? Check.
    Fun atmosphere? Check.
    Great bartenders? Check.
Shuffleboard?  Wait - what... Yeah, you heard me, Shuffleboard.  Check, check!

This bar is my new local watering hole.  It's so cute, fun and tasty I just don't know why I overlooked it before.

They have a really fantastic beer list.  Always something new on tap with a lovely variety of great bottles at okay prices.
And to top it all off, they have aussie pies.  Dangerously delicious.

The crowd is also pretty good with a nice mix of local and not-so-local.  They also have a nice back area that's filled with doggies during the warm weather.

    ah, the diamond.

a little misunderstood. at little far from the train.

but it's great. nice space, great beers, awesome patio, very welcoming staff that host and sponsor oodles of community events.

stop for a chill pint of a pot pie (yes! they have pot pies!) and enjoy your visit.

Nice to have such a great little bar so close to home. Nice set up and fantastic beer selection, friendly bartenders, relaxed, and has a great neighborhoody feel.

    No complaints from me!

I came to the Diamond during beer week, so I didn't get to experience the prices of the amazing beer selection. What I did get to do was sit in a sweet ski gondola on a beautiful deck. Then I went inside and played a rousing game of shuffleboard, which I didn't even have to wait in line for.

The bartenders were friendly, the beer was delicious, and I remember less of the night than I would like. But that's enough to ensure that I'll be back to Greenpoint some time soon.

Well the best part about this bar? The Shuffle board table!! I mean what else could you ask for?
The bartenders are nice and the place has great beers. It's a bit of a walk but well worth it. Great place to grab a brew during a summer Saturday afternoon.

As I walked into The Diamond for my first visit and looked over the boards, I suddenly found myself unable to move. My foot was stuck. I look down and there is this bug-eyed British Terrier chiding me for not giving immediate affection upon arrival. After I free my shoe from his mouth, I give respect and take a seat.

Nice selection of beers. I always judge a bar by the "what the hell factor". The "what the hell factor" is when I see beers I have never seen anywhere else before. Service is good. I like Dave. He's just mellow and down to earth. And he's bringing the good beerses, so what more can you ask for?

Decor is nice. Nothing crazy. Just kind of cozy and mild touches of funky. It is a bit out of the way, but who cares. It's nice. And if you are going to be at The Gutter, you might as well walk over to here.

Oh yeah. Wednesday is Atari night. If you win, you get a $25 bar tab.

I have been meaning to try this place out for a little while because I live a couple convenient blocks away, but hadn't had a good chance to until a friend was visiting last night and we were looking to hang out near my place, and voilà!  I tried a special beer, the name of which I couldn't remember, but it had "honeyed" in the name and was served at 55 degrees.  I was curious enough to order, and really enjoyed it.  My friend had a beer from the standard menu whose name I also don't remember, but wasn't particularly remarkable.  The back patio was comfortable ... sparsely populated enough that we had room to sit down, but filled up enough that it felt alive.

Basically, I'm really happy that I live right by this place.

Nice little bar with a good selection of drinks. However for some strange reason there was a weird funk through out the whole night that I couldn't stand. It was a Thursday night and there were about 5 people. Think the stench drove them all away. Hopefully they took care of the problem b/c I would go back.

Two words.  Shuffle Puck.  Yes, this bar has great beer.  Yes they have a cozy outdoor patio.  Yes they are the pioneers on the soon to be booming north Brooklyn waterfront but what really completes this bar is Shuffle Puck.  The greatest of all bar games and something I am more than happy to travel for.  The table is brand spanking new and Dave the owner lovingly keeps it in spectacular shape.  As a bonus he also puts the same care into the beer he carries so the place is perfect.

I call it the Diamond in the Rough, becaue this bar is so off the beaten path.

I had heard about this bar from one of the bartenders who works over at Spuyten Duyvil. Spuyten is also a very good beer bar (will post a review  about that place) so I decided to check out The Diamond.

In order to get to the bar, you would either get off at Greenpoint or Nassau Avenues on the G train (I rode the B61 bus over) walk up to Calyer Street, and Manhattan Avenue, on the west side of the street and walk one block west to Franklin. I personally got off the bus at Greenpoint Avenue, walked over to Franklin and then continued on down.

Be aware that Franklin splits off into two streets, one is Franklin and the other is Banker. This neighborhood is extremely industrial and somewhat quiet. The bar is on Franklin Street. If I could post a map here, I would, because getting to the bar is somewhat tricky and some of the streets in that area are on an angle.

The bar has a black facade and there is a picture of a diamond (not a four sided diamond like in a deck of cards, but a "jewel" like diamond) hanging over the front door.

The inside is very nice and brand new. There is a shuffleboard against one wall and a semi-circular bar on the other wall. The backyard is nice, picnic tables and benches to sit on.

Their bottle list is extensive, according to the blackboard focusing mainly on Belgian and British imports and they have about 5 or 6 beers on tap. Tonight's selection included Harvieston Bitter & Twisted, Southern Tier Hop Sun, Schneider Weisse, Cisco Whales Tale, Troubadour Obscura, and Stoudt's Pilsner. There is a description of each beer that is on tap posted on the blackboard, as well.

I went for the Stoudt's Pilsner and it was quite good. I plan on making another trip to this bar in the near future.

I'd give it four stars for the beer selection, tasty cheese plates, the service, and the backyard, but unfortunately it's also the world's most boring bar on a Saturday night.
