So, I love Yelp now so that we can share our experiences and opinions about, well, just about anything! After having such awful dental experiences in my 30 years, I had a terrific appointment with Dr. Momingan and his staff. The hygenist was totally thorough, and the appointment started right on time (how rare is that?). It's such a relief to be confident with them and know that I'm getting a good dentist.
I used to be a patient of Dr. Capper, but he up and moved to the burbs (traitor!) so I decided to give the new dentist a try. Dr. Flak is very young, flirty and kind of cute. This actually helps the whole experience seem a little less horrible.
I have not only had a cleaning with Dr. Flak, but a crown and a filling (yes, my teeth are rotting out of my head). I was super happy this time because I have never had such a painless shot of novacaine (and I've had dozens). Dr. Flak really knew what he was doing and took frequent breaks to make sure I was OK. I'm of the sort that just wants it to be over with, but I think the breaks helped me leave the place (temporary crown and all) much less stressed and grouchy than I might have.
My only concern is that I was there FOREVER. But...my teeth needed serious help, so what can you do....

I have been coming here almost the entire time I have lived in Chicago, except a brief period when they didn't take my weird insurance. I saw Dr. Capper and thought he was awesome - but then he disappeared with no warning or notice! I was in to get a cleaning at the end of December and I had to come back two weeks later to get a cavity filled and he was already gone - he moved to Geneva, apparently. Boo.
So, since I hadn't had a cavity in years and now some strange dentist I had never met was going to fill it, I was really nervous. But then I met Dr. Flak and he was beyond amazing and immediately put me at ease. He was cracking jokes and playing a "guess the band on the radio" game with myself and the hygienist. My cavity was tiny so I was in and out of there in about 20 minutes - it took longer for them to numb me up than it did for them to fill it.
I was just there again last night for my regular cleaning, and once again Dr. Flak was friendly, funny, and personable. His hygienist is also really great - she's quick, nice, and very thorough. They are also very punctual, which was surprising since I was the last appointment of the day and usually doctors are running late by then.
The staff here is also great, and they remodeled the waiting room in the last year so it's a lot nicer than it used to be.
I'd highly recommend this Dr. Flak and his staff to anyone!

I think the dentist is one of those things where your experience is going to be way positive or way negative. So that being said:
My experience with Dr. Momongan has been way positive. I didn't go the dentist for a long time because I was very, very broke, and then once I got dental insurance I didn't go to the dentist because I was embarrassed that I hadn't been in so long. Yes, in Alyssa's universe this is what passes for logic.
So anyway, I started to have these dreams that my teeth were rotting and falling out and I would wake up in terror. I started to worry so much about my teeth that I started to feel pain in them. So I took a friend's recommendation and went to see Dr. Momongan.
I'm so glad I did. I've had three appointments: an emergency one for the (turned-out-to-be-phantom) pain, which they scheduled for me for the same day I called; a full check-up and cleaning that was thorough and almost-painless; and a follow-up appointment to fill two small cavities (not bad for not going to the dentist for so long. Hey kids- flossing works!)
The fillings appointment was hard for me, because I clench my jaw alot and as a result have TMJ, but Dr. Momongan could not have been kinder and more patient. So I promised him I'll never wait so long to go to the dentist again, and I know I'll have no problem keeping that promise.

This practice has been awesome. After trying several dentists when I moved here- this one is the best. Since I have an HMO, it was a relief that a dentist my friends recommended was available. Conveniently located and very clean, Dr. Flak and his staff are very professional and courteous. Highly recommended!!
I can't believe what I am reading about Dr. Momongan! I've been going to Dr. Momongan since 2001and all my experiences have been outstanding! Dr. Momongan is very patient, kind and very thorough! Since I was a child I have had the biggest dental phobia. I have never felt more comfortable or at ease at any other dental office. Dr. Momongan goes out of his way to make my appointments as stress free as possible! Can't ask for anything better than that! He also explains all dental procedures with all different options available. The staff was very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. His assistants are always very polite and helpful. I would NEVER consider going to a different dental practice and recommend Dr. Momongan to all my friends,family and co-workers!
I started coming here in July after I was unhappy with my former dentist. Dr. Capper was fantastic. Great bedside manner and he always explained what he was doing before he would actually do it. I also appreciated that I almost always had the same hygenist and she is fantastic, I always feel like she goes out of her way to get to know me and have my mind wander so I don't concentrate on the possible pain I might experience. Sadly, Dr. Capper has left to start his own practice closer to his home. I have yet to see Dr. Flak but will update my review once I do.
I have never had issues with billing. And when I went to get my root canal done in the same building, they walked over my x-trays.
Things I've been unhappy about, they are open on Saturday but are only staffed with a receptionist. Why bother even being open? I wish they had more later days.
Overall a great practice. The waiting room is small but adequate and the decor is neutral. They also stock the waitng room w/ plenty of magazines should you arrive early or be delayed.
I had to write a positive review of this practice to rave about Dr. Flak and the wonderful staff at The Dental Practice of Lincoln Park.
I have never encountered such a supportive friendly accommodating staff of people who are pleasant and extremely helpful. They are amazing with everything from setting up convenient appointments to making sure everything is good with your insurance.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Flak. I was quite nervous for my first non-cleaning dental experience and Dr. Flak was patient, kind and really seem to understand the nerves I was experiencing. I actually walked out of the office with a smile on my face and I no longer have any type of fears about visiting the dentist.
I definitely recommend this office and if I could give more than 5 stars I would!

I went here to have a chipped tooth repaired. Dr. Momongan was my dentist and said i would have to have my two front teeth sanded down to be even with the chip. I already have small teeth so i didnt want them to have to be shorter. He then said I could have laser surgery on my gums to make my teeth look longer (bc more tooth would show). I reallllly didnt want to do this and asked for another option. He said he could put in a composite filling but it might fall out bc within the next few days bc it was right in front. I choose this.
It is now approximately a year later and the composite has not fallen out. Maybe I'm lucky, but it seems like a sketchy situation to suggest such extensive work for a problem that was easy to solve.
Also, they completely messed up the insurance process, as other reviewers have noted. It was impossible to deal with them. It wasn't solved for about 3 months after the procedure.
Dr. Momongan does not do quality restorative or cosmetic work. I have had to replace two crowns that he installed less than 4 years ago. He does not stand by his work. The lab he used for my crowns was horrible. They were the wrong color, shape and size. He refused to send them back to the lab and I was a hostage in a dental chair missing two teeth. He also recommends dental work that is not necessary. I found him to be dishonest on a few different occasions. They have repeatedly screwed up filing insurance claims. He gets irritated and rushed if you ask him anything about his recommendations. I should have ditched him long before I did.

Christine S...I do not know what you are talking about! I have been a patient at Dr. Momongan's office for about 3 years now and I wish I had found him long ago.
I have had restorative and cosmetic work done by Dr. Allen and have been nothing but pleased with the results. I too had to go to the lab as well...get a custom shade...all of it. If I never liked the color, shape or size ...Dr. Allen would have fixed the issue no problem. I found the quality of work to be outstanding. Dr. Momongan stands by his work. I have referred many friends and co-workers to his office and they too are just as pleased as myself. Highly recommended!

Very pleased with Dr. Momongan as well as the various hygienists I have had, everyone is very knowledgeable and friendly. I especially like how Dr. Momongan explains what's going on with your teeth and uses a mirror to actually show you. Very cool.
Office is a 2 minute walk from my apt; cant beat it.

By far the best dentist practice that I have ever been to! I've been going to Dr Monmagan for a little over 10 years now. Even after moving, I still make the 45 minute drive twice a year to see him as well as endure the ever present street construction and bad parking. (Local traffic is terrible..I'm only 7 miles away!) He is gentle, knowledgeable, reliable, and personable. Even though he has a huge client base, he always remembers my son's name, my occupation as well as husband's!! And this is not based on my experience in the office but when we have crossed paths outside of the office! Now that's a good doctor!!! It's nice to know that I am more than a client!

I've been a patient for two years now and I have no complaints. The staff has been very friendly and Dr. Kapper is great. The teeth cleaning is through and I walk away feeling rejuvenated and clean. Just be sure your insurance will cover any additional products they offer. I got a fluoride cleaning and had to cough up an extra $25 dollars, because my insurance didn't cover it. I could have got the same fluoride at Walgreen's for $5 dollars. I blame myself for not knowing my insurance. If you need a dentist in Lincoln Park I would highly recommend Dr. Kapper.

Not bad. In general, I am terrified of going to the dentist (something about the sound of metal scratching around in your mouth...ew). But I found the place to be really decent. It was clean, in a convenient location, and the staff was really friendly. The woman who cleaned my teeth was nice. The dentist that I saw was Dr. Scott Capper. He shook my hand, asked me what was going on, and did whatever dentists do--no pain!
Only four stars because it took me over a month and a half to get an appointment at 5pm or later!
I have been a patient for a year or so here and since the beginning of 2008, I have made three appointments and have had all three cancelled on me at the last minute because of the hygienist, they kept saying she was unavailable and had to go by her schedule. I am sorry but how many times can this woman cancel??? I say get a new hygienist! This is so unprofessional and disrespectful, I refuse to go back.
I'm new to the area and went to see Dr. Monmagan at the Dental Practice of Lincoln Park based on Yelp reviews and location.
The office was kind of old school meets contemporary with a totally random radio station that was playing white snake one minute and Christina Aguillera the next.
My dental hygenist wasn't very chatty, but did get the job done and the experience wasn't torturous. I especially liked that she didn't give me a hard time as it had been a couple years since I had been to the dentist and sometimes they guilt-trip you.
The office was very high tech and you are able to see your tooth x-rays on a monitor(they look kind of like toes in case you were wondering) and they also suggested a new floride treatment that I had never heard which made me feel like they were on top of things.
I really liked Monmagan, highly intelligent with a humane touch. He is a fast-talker- you have to make sure you are really paying attention to get everything he says. The only downside is that every time I think of his name, that stupid muppet song runs through my head.

As much as I don't like going to the dentist, Dr. Capper makes it as pleasant at is possibly can be. He is a really nice guy (though don't expect chatty - he's all business, which I like) and really honest. He never pushes you to do anything at all, and has told me and my husband on several occasions to just watch certain things, whereas other dentists we've seen would have tried to sell us on services right away. Prices there are pretty standard for the area, and if you're a self-pay like me they extend a 20% discount, which is quite helpful.
The hygienists there are all really nice, though I must say, I don't think I've ever seen the same one twice. That can be an issue if you have a major phobia, but it doesn't bother me at all. The front desk staff is on top of things too and always very friendly.
I've been a patient there for 7+ years and don't plan to change any time soon.

I know bad dentists (just see my review of Chicago Family Dental),and Dr. Momongan is not a bad dentist..he's a fabulous dentist. For the first time in my life, I'm not scared of going to a dentist. I haven't been to a dentist in a long time, and naturally, Dr. M didn't have entirely great news for me. However, he was very honest, clear, considerate, and laid out various options for treatment. He took time to perform two small fillings on me, and was so efficient..I swear the whole process took less than ten minutes and it was more cleane, comfortable and precise than I've experienced in the past. His staff was great! His assistant was knowledgable, and did a great job explaining my situation and concerns to Dr. M. He knew all about me before he came in.

I have been going to Dr. Monmagan at the Dental Practice of Lincoln Park for 4 years now and I'm very happy with him as my dentist. I did have a negative experience once with one of the girls who works up front, but but Dr. Monmagan himself is worth a 5 star rating. The dental hygienists are very friendly and helpful as well!
Dr Monmagan is knowledgeable, reliable, and personable. I was very nervous when I had to go to him for a minor surgery about a year ago, but he did a fabulous job. It would be more convenient for me to go to a dentist downtown, but I continue to go to this Lincoln Park office just for Dr. Momongran.

This was my first time to the place because I had recently moved to Chicago. The cleaning was done by a dental hygienist and she was very nice and did a thorough cleaning. When it came to the exam by Dr Copper, he was very rough and when I got home I realized he had split my lip. It was also a very rushed exam. I need to go back for a filling but I think I will try to find another dentist.
Postscript: I followed a recommendation and went to Dr. Monmagan (also in the office) for my fillings. It was a good experience! He answered all of my questions and really took time and care with my teeth. Also, the dental hygienist was very nice. I am recommending him to others and would go back in the future.

Uggh, if I could give this place -12 stars I would. Where should I start....well first Dr. Monmagan told me I needed all types of insane dental work done. I trusted his professional advice and started some of the procedures. I should have run away fast when I initially went for my cleaning and checkup and he seemed annoyed that I had questions about his recommendations and the dental hygentist was complaining about working there. Fast forward to after my first procedure, they screwed up the billing somehow and kept sending me bills after my insurance had already paid them in full. I forwarded all of the documentation from my insurance proving that they had indeed been paid. I didn't hear from them for a few months. Because I didn't like the service I was getting there, I switched dentists. My new dentist was shocked that Dr. Monmagan had recommended such extensive dental work and assured me that I didn't need any of the crap that he said I needed. When my new dentist requested my x-rays from the Dental Practice of LP, they took 3 months to forward them. And in the meantime, they reported me to a collections agency for supposed lack of payment. Despite the fact that I had reciepts that showed they had been paid in full! I was out of the country when this all happened, and the collections agency jerks managed to fill my ENTIRE voicemail box with harassing messages about a debt that I DID NOT owe! I had a death in my extended family and no one was able to leave a message for me on my voicemail about it because of this nonsense. Six months later, they finally acknowledged it was all a filing mistake on their part and apologized. But the hell that ensued before that and the false diagnosis of dental problems is enough for me to urge everyone to stay very far AWAY from this shady dental practice. I've never had such a horrible experience with so called medical professionals.
I was not at all impressed with Dr. Monmagan and will not be going back. My hygienist was great though!
I have been seeing Dr Momongan for several years now and he is the best dentist I have ever had in my life. I have a severe phobia problem with seeing dentists because of a negative experience about 10 years ago. He is kind, gentle, and works with me to make sure I am comfortable. I trust him. He also demonstrated that he is not trying to rip me off. In the past I had 2 dentists I consulted tell me I needed about 6K worth of work done. He fixed the problem with a filling and I was fine. He also takes the time to talk and listen to you instead of rushing in and out.

Dr. Scott Capper, one of the two dentists in the office has been cleaning my pearly whites since 1998. This dental practice gets an 'A+' in time management. If your appointment is at 8:45a.m., arrive early because you will be in the chair at 8:45 a.m. If you are insured, the co-pay is usually $10-$15, but for those out of pocket clients, like me, the discount is 20%. The practice sends a post card one month before your next visit and a reminder phone call two days before your next scheduled appointed.

I am surprised that there are not more bad reviews on here about Dr. Capper since I had such a bad experience at his office. His hygeinist Kristy was really bad. Very rough. My co-worker had his other hygienist named Lori? and she was good apparently. Dr. Capper said I had seven cavities and I had my teeth cleaned six months ago and had NONE. That seemed fishy... He was also very fast and I did not really feel like I had an exam done. The office is dirty too or it just looks dirty. There was scummy stuff on the floor in the hygenists room. Gross. I am going to another dentist. I am used to nice staff with a chatty doctor and this place lacked it all. I guess that is what you get when you go cheap and get the HMO plan - I am switiching mine too next year. I also called my other dentist back home and told him what Dr. Capper said and they looked at my records and said there is no way I have seven cavities unless I stopped brushing my teeth - next time I am in Michigan, I am stopping in to get their advice. So terrible to be told lies but I guess that is the way they go. Maybe I will see the other dentist there but it makes me nervous and they are probably friends so he will say I have seven too...
