I finally went here last night with some friends from out of town, and we were very impressed with the beer selection. The servers are relatively knowledgable and actively getting better. The management is committed to training their staff. I have not had the food, but those dining seemed to be enjoying it. The beer passport program tracks what you've been drinking, and allows you to register your opinion on what beers for DRB to acquire next.
Great atmosphere and an excellent addition to the Arsht Center neighborhood.
I will definitely add DRB to my regular rotation.
Went there last night for what was supposed to be stop 1 of an impromptu bar mini-crawl and ended up staying all night! Really liked the laid-back yet stylish look and vibe of the place. And they have more beer than one could ever imagine! Beers from every corner of the world where beer is made. The name really suits it perfectly. And the prices were good. Most of them $5. The two female bartenders were great. They checked in on us just enough. The bar is pretty small so if we needed anything we could just call them and they would come right over. Because of it's small size, I bet it gets crowded very easily. I'll probably stick to weekday drinking here to avoid any hassles.
We ordered the pepperoni pizza, chicken sandwich sliders, cheese plate, and arepas. The cheese plate was actually very good but a little small, I thought. The rest of the food was meh and a little on the pricey side ($7 for one arepa). But people don't come here to eat good, they come here to drink good so no biggie. When all was said and done, our party of 3 racked up a $130 tab. But I was with 2 professional beer-guzzlers so don't be alarmed.
We had a great time here. The ambiance was good, the beer mugs frosty, the wait staff friendly, the patrons sociable, and the company superb.
What can I say that hasn't already been said?
Beer - check

Food (bar food-stuffed jalapeno's, friend zucchini, sliders) - check

Ambiance; friendly and welcoming - check
Will I return - check, check, check
Great spot to check out after an event at the Performing Arts Center. Given I am at the PAC at least four times a month for something or another, it is a great, cheap, walkable place to chill either before a show or after. Good food and lots of beer. Makes me a fan with a quickness. After the opera Tues night, members of the orchestra were also chilling. See boys, the opera can be fun! Nice.
Just wonder why these 500+ beer selection places only have the same ONE African beer - Tusker. How about adding a South African Castle or that green bottle Carlsberg beer from Malawi. The South Africans did buy out the large American brands (Coors or Miller I think). Shouldn't be that difficult to find.
The place is rather small, but perfect for a party of one.
A wonderfully hidden place with an encyclopedia of beers (and food too, but food is not important). The DRB is a quaint, comfortable small watering hole which 3 big tv's, several tables and couches for groups, but not large groups unless you get there early to grab the limited spots.
The staff maintains their politeness, courteousness, excitementness and all other positive "ness'" despite the number of people that are cramped into the small area and they're very adept in handling the beer orders, which you will appreciate once you've seen the selection.
A great place to go and just hang out. The only downside is the confusing parking condition in the adjacent lot, but that's the price for the location.
Great location, an unbeatable beer selection, but this place needs to work on their game plan because service is their Achilles heel. I had a chance to watch this place open and flood with people. One thing I really enjoyed about this bar is how it took you out of Miami, while being in the heart of the city, for a second I felt like i was in the big apple with the size and lighting.
With their wide selection of beers there's a wide range of prices, $2 PBR and $11 Young's Double Chocolate. They are going to have to do something about people management because as the night progressed patrons were forced to drink outside on the street.
Bottom line if you want a specific beer they will have it, no beers on tap, fight to get your order in... pray they get it to you. Make sure to try the $4 Toña from Nicaragua.
I was gonna give it 3 stars until I remembered that no smoking is allowed, and that made me experience this place more favorably than just about every other bar in Miami that actually serves good beer.
The list of beer is solid and very heavy on American beers. They have a lot of wheat beers and fruitier beers that should help women who don't love beer to enjoy it more than they would a place like the Abbey.
Music was probably a little too loud for a room full of people who had no interest in dancing, but their selection of underground hip hop was perfect. Unfortunately it got crappier as the night went along though. I also did not notice any crackheads while there, which is a good sign for people who want gentrification of the northern parts of Downtown. If only they could fill in those empty lots it affordable housing for Yuppies it might actually be a walkable neighborhood.
Long story short, it is a good bar that is very close to the Arsht and the AAA.
I think I've found my favorite new neighborhood bar!
The DRB is small, cozy, and as Maria A. mentioned - very The Room-esque.
I stopped by on a Monday night with some friends after discovering that Zeke's Roadhouse was closed. I found that there were quite a few patrons ordering drinks and having food. I never thought I would see this type of scene on a weekday in this area of Miami.
Unfortunately, they only had four menus available so having to share a menu with 238947238947 choices amongst six people was a bit time-consuming. Regardless, the giant list of beers felt like opening up the Toys R Us Christmas catalog. So many options, all perfectly organized by country, and surprisingly appetizing for a beer menu.
This is a very chilling and welcoming bar - I definitely see myself hanging out here often instead of making the drive across the bridge to Zeke's.
I'd have to come back at a busier time - I may have lucked out crowd- and service-wise by coming on a Monday!
Ah...I LOVE beer. I LOVE a place that has a good selection of beer. Enter DRB.
We came to the DRB after our Yelp Happy Hour at Jada Coles. Over 400 beers from around the world!!! HEAVEN!!!
The beer was reasonably priced and they had an awesome selection. The food, however, was ok but a bit overpriced. I had the arepa. It was one arepa cut in half. DEF not enough food and was expensive. This is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5.
The service was ok. Though the server did state they had JUST opened and were missing some of the food items on the menu.
I would love to come back to this place as the atmosphere and the beer is awesome. Everything else they could work on a bit.
Fat hungry people...stay away from here...until they expand or hire more bartenders!
That being said, I loved this place! Post- Happy Hour UYE, we went for MORE beer, of course! And we ended up at DRB! Beer-loving drinkers who are open and liberal and chilling at one spot, hell yeah!
Yelpers hijacked a table that left, and started randomly picking up empty bottles for beer suggestions! Others perused the menu/passport for world beers, and some of the girls settled for fruit beers from Belgium, raspberry lambic framboise, peach L.F and banana L.F!! Some of the guys had beer from India and really liked it.
So there's a beer for everyone at DRB!
Ordering food was a nightmare though...probably because there were only two bartenders, and a small kitchen overwhelmed with orders. No meat pie on first try, 30-45 min wait on beef sliders...which one of the bartenders had to question me about before "feeding" me. And because there was only two bartenders, they avoided eye contact as they made sure they got orders right..by candlelight. You needed to be persistent.
It's a cool and fun place if you aren't an uptight a** about getting your food on time, or hollering for your bartender. :)
Tip-bits:
$10 parking to the side, sweet talk to attendant for free parking and then tip him! (*wink* Jorge R.)
Welcome to the Democratic Republic of Beer.
Population: The hip kids from Downtown, Midtown, and Brickell
Environment: Smoke Free, Variety of Tunes, Good Lighting
Popular Facts: You can meet and greet over 400 well brewed ambassadors from around the globe.
Cuisine: There are bites from several continents represented on this menu
Best time to go: Starting next week you can go from 11am to 5am. Until then it's from 6pm to 5am. Best time is before the crowds get in here.
Grab your state issued ID, a wad of cash, and a thirst for brews and set out for the DRB!
Quick note: This place reminds me of the Room... it will soon be really discovered by all.
Better late than never I suppose. I was definitely not disappointed by DRB, in fact it was everything I had expected and more! Yeah the parking situation blows a little, but your bitterness will disappear the minute you pick up their beer menu and get lost in all of their amazing options. Looking back, I was really safe with my pick. Noting that the Saints game is tomorrow, and since I was feeling my Nola blues after seeing a guy at the bar wearing an original Williams jersey, I opted for Abita Purple Haze all night. No worries darlings, you are very likely to find me here again, in fact I have to go back to get my passport to try all of their international beers.
I really liked the lighting and decor, neon bright so you can see at eye level once you are sitting on their comfortable white couches, but dark enough where you can enjoy what I call your "drunk-privacy" (if its dark enough, people might not notice how many drinks you've really had) Also, if you don't like being close to people, then opt for one of the tables outside, because it gets a little crowded.
Cant wait to see you all there again!
Now, I'm not sure a review is fair, if I was once on the "inside".
Yes, we need a great bar in Downtown Miami. AND...
Yes, they offer reasonable prices on beer. BUT
The food is slightly overpriced for what you get AND
They should have waited to open until they were properly staffed AND
Staff is properly educated on the 400 beers they serve.
I was hired but quickly realized I knew NOTHING or next to nothing about beer. It is a disservice to the guests to hear things like "What would you recommend?" and reply "PBR?" What can I say, I love cheap beer.
The DRB has loads of potential but give them a few months or you might be thoroughly turned-off.
This is just what the "arts district" needed. I happen to be a resident of the neighborhood and have always remarked that the area needed a chill spot that you can come by just to have a casual beer and hang out with friends (and then walk/stumble home). Well it looks like the DRB people listened because this place fits the bill to a T.
DRB is a little whole in the wall dive bar located next to Manhattan Cafe and down the street from the Arsht Center. They serve something like 400 different beers from around the world and for the most part they are offered at a fairly decent price. I got chance to check them out last night, and while they just opened last week and are working out their kinks, the potential for this place is big. Think of it as like The Room (SoBe), but downtown and with an even more casual vibe. Another great thing is that they don't allow smoking inside which is great if you're tired of the bars/pubs that reek of smoke.
The guys working there had us sign up for beer passport thing which they are still hashing out the details for, but any kind of members club that keeps locals coming back is a good idea in my opinion. I look forward to coming back and I hope they continue to improve on the locale as it still looks like it could use some more work.
This is a neighborhood beer & wine place we all wanted - comfortable interior, friendly staff, subdued lighting (except for the corner by the window which is perfect for studying or for those who just want more light), and small ambience. "Look small and think big" should be their motto as it makes a great impression.
That being said, there's excellent drinks - and for women who doesn't like beer, you could try the banana flavored beer (I dare you! It's good) and the raspberry beer (Frambroise) - both of which are like wine (corked beer, who knew they existed?!) And yes, they have enough beer to put Zeke's to shame (plus, about remarks of beers running out - it happens at Zeke's too). We needed a mainland version of Zeke's with great prices, and we got it - and upped it with high-end beers that Zeke's doesn't even have.
They also have food that spans all over the globe but I haven't tried those yet. But because they have food here, you can bet that this is another one of those rare bars that are smoke-free, and for someone like me, I truly appreciate that!
When I was here, it seems to cater to the indie and a laid-back crowd that always like to strike up a conversation - and this is always good in my book. :) I'm sure the demographic of the bar changes with the time of the day and whether there are performances at the nearby Arsht Center.
I can see how my rating could drop to 4 stars if it gets too crowded as this is a small space and having too many people probably would kill the ambience especially if you were sitting in one of the low tables by the wall. But for now, for what it is, it earned my love.
Thanks DRB! Next step, becoming a true republic!
This place is very tiny but don't let that fool you. They really do have a very wide selection of beers. Ranging from $4-$12. Be a little adventurous and go for the expensive ( and stronger) beer. Try the banana beer from Belgium which was amazing. Then have another Belgium beer called Delirium Tremens a strong pale ale that tastes like rice pudding. Their dip platter needs more chips or they should refill it for free because we still had a ton of dip but no more chips. I'd like to see also some happy hour specials. Also no beers on draft, they have room for it so maybe in the future. As for service I didn't have any problems here. The night started with two bartenders and as the place got more crowded some more waiters were out and about to help us out.
Love the concept and I wanted to love the place but the execution was lacking big time.
Maybe it was the time I went (11:00pm Friday) but the place was a hot mess. The one empty table was covered in trash and no one cleaned it up. Soo, bar it is! My friend and I were excited to have the Pumkinhead beer but sadly they only had one so we had to chose who gets to enjoy it's yumminess. The service was not good, we had to ask twice for a beer menu and they just shrugged and said they couldn't find one! Also it was extremely HOT inside with no air conditioning. Morale of the story, if they stepped it up a bit (try more employees?) I might try it again for some round the world beer tasting!
Wow where have you been my whole life? Talk about an amazing beer selection. I really like the fact that the beed is broken down by countries. At first I wish it were a little bigger, but now that I think about it no way I like it the wat it is. (I hope it deosnt get all commercial) Now the question is has anyone had that 40$ beer?
Awesome selection of beers and decent food. Staff is really friendly and provides great service. Cool place to hang before/after seeing a show at the Archt.
LOVED IT! a great place to have a good time with friends, great atmosphere! they have an outstanding selection of beer from around the world I was very happy about! i've been there only once, but I definetely recommend it as a starter. food was good, and prices reasonable. I just wish the place was a little bit bigger, and hopefully by now they've hired more crew considering by the time I went they had just opened a few weeks ago.
The first time I came here was with my coworker, after they had only been open for a week. We got there around 6ish. I'm a bit of a beer snob, so when I heard about this place I was pretty psyched. That being said, I wanted some guidance and recommendations. Giorgio greeted us and after a bit of running around, he was able to chat with us. I noticed that they had some issues to figure out... so I decided to hold off on posting my review until now.
That being said, they have hired some new help and this place has become my new Cheers-where everybody knows my name.
The food is excellent and fresh... I have tried the dip platter, shrimp skewers, and the chicken wings. All the dips in the platter are excellent- there's a super fresh guacamole, semi-spicy and sweet salsa, and a yummy cheese sauce. The skewers were substantial (for bar food) and had red onions. The wings were fried with a yummy crispy batter and a tamarind sauce that is finger-lickin. My friend (who is from Cali) had the tacos. He was hesitant at first, but I convinced him to get them. He was so glad that he did! They were like your traditional tacos al carbon. I didn't try them because I don't eat beef, but they looked super tasty and fresh.
I have joined the passport club and I try to get something different every time I go there. I always ask for a recommendation... Sean and Giorgio have never steered me wrong.
They now have parking spaces allocated just for the DRB in the lot beside the building.
I think they are working out their kinks... these are really nice guys who are passionate about good beer and good food. I highly recommend that if you haven't been here- GO, and if you have been, but had some issues- GO AGAIN and update your review. :)
I agree with Jorge R.s first paragraph in every sense of the word. Biscayne, N. of Arsht was in desperate need of a whole in the wall bar where the beers are plentiful and the ambience cool & collected. As far as low key neighborhood dives the location is perfect - but do keep in mind that parking will be tough especially on nights when there are performances, as you drive around the block be prepared for the signs advertising $10 and $5 parking all over the place, and there'll also be the traffic coming to/from the Arsht Center.
It is the perfect post class spot for those leaving AI Miami - no higher education institution is complete without a watering hole and this DRB is just what the principal ordered - what better to get the creative juices flowing.
The space is small and quaint. Guaranteeing that the wait staff will quickly acknowledge you and make sure you have the best service possible.
They have tons and tons and tons of beer. If you're like me and don't drink beer, they have wine by the glass, and bottles (at great prices), and of course some soft drinks for the few who don't like to be intoxicated before 5p. For the beer lover, they have a passport you can sign up for, and try to go "around the world" filling it in and earning prizes along the way.
There is also an interesting selection of food from all over the world (sorta); with many plates which I'm sure can be paired great with beers from the region. The food descriptions are cute and humorous, which gave me something to read while Emilio perused the huge list of beers.
RATING: I'm really looking forward to giving DRB 4 stars, but for now, you see three stars, which really should translate to 3.5. Here's why, and my suggestions for improving:
-Food: 1. relatively small plates so don't go hungry. 2. Food takes a very, very long time. I went and there were about 3 parties at the place at the time we ordered, and it took ridiculously long to come out. We were told that the food is cooked when ordered, which is great, but if it's this slow during the soft opening, I am definitely not ordering once it is fully opened. 3. The chorizo comes out with a tasty dipping sauce, but in general it was too fried and oily, yet very dry. 4. The beef sliders - let's just say they're better at Chili's (I did point this out to Giorgio - the manager - so hopefully they'll make them better soon. If not they're still edible and of normal size; they taste better when you add the sauce from the chorizo to them).
-Service: 1. Giorgio was excellent with is service. Very attentive, and when he brought out the beer, he also brought out chilled glasses and served the beer; however, Sean just brought out freshly washed glasses (sorta my water glass was dirty - but w/e) and the beer bottle, and did not serve it - not everyone knows how to pour beer, so I believe that as a person working at a beer bar you should serve your patrons the beer ordered - especially if the place is not packed. 2. They weren't very knowledgeable about beers, when asked about beer recommendations they hesitated and weren't sure about what to offer. Emilio asked for Amber ales, and although the beers he got were good, none of them were what he was asking for. The table next to us asked for a recommendation on French beer, but the servers weren't really able to have one immediately in mind, Emilio had to cut in and make a recommendation. So I suggest a more in depth training for the servers (they did say they haven't even had time to hire employees, so I'm not holding any of this against them, and look forward to returning).
- Beers: This is just my suggestion for the bar and the menu, considering that I'm married to a man who looooves beer, and whenever we travel we always seek out that local bar where all beer-lovers gather and sing merry songs. I think there are a few things they can do to improve the customers' experience in selecting just the right brew - 1. Include a description of the beer in the menu (pilsner, amber, dark, etc.) 2. List the alcohol vol. % 3. Note the size of the beer (vol/oz) - they have a Deus for $40, which is great, we found a Chimay for $100+ in Philly, but it was clear next to it that it was a 3Ltr bottle (btw, the Deus they have is 25.4 oz - so feel free to share my friends). 4. Make a note of the rating (either from http://ratebeer.com or http://beeradvocate.com) these ratings are from regular beer drinkers like their patrons, so it's an easy tool to highlight which beers are best to order
Like I mentioned above, the place is cool, quaint and promising; I look forward to going back again and again, and helping the hubs fill in his passport as the year progresses.
We went here for happy hour on Friday after reading a review on a local website. We were very impressed by their 400 bottle beer list and the food well exceeded our expectations, although we only had tostones and the dip platter. We will without a doubt return.
A few suggestions... On the beer list add both size of bottle and alcohol %, you don't know what you are getting yourself into otherwise.
Also, in the future it would help to have a book behind the bar with a bottle/label shot and also a brief description on the beer to save the servers time from running in the back to ask management. Otherwise, nicely done!!!!!
i lost my phone the night i went to the DRB, they carry lots of my favorite beers like lagunitas IPA. the bar area is nice and the service was quick and smiley. i remember watching an nba game... i remember my friend Y getting a delirium tremens or two? what a fun night. i think i love this bar.
It's not the Abbey, but I do love me a gimmick and the DRB has a killer one: a global passport challenging you to hop around the planet, hops-wise. Yes, let's face, the best beers are European- Belgium alone takes about a quarter of their beer menu- but if you want Asian rarities you'll find them here too. It's a welcoming place that will find a crowd as it goes on- hopefully not too big a crowd, because the small interior can't hold it.
My wife and I checked out DRB after deciding it would not be worth the wait in fighting traffic to South Beach on Oct 31st. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by contemporary decor, reggae music, world series being played on tv, a nice crowd (21-35), and a friendly bartender. To say the least we were overwhelmed with huge selection on the beer menu: variety of beers from Europe, Asia, America, Africa, and South America. Although we did not order any food, DRB also hosts a great selection of foods from every continent. If you are beer & wine connoisseur this is the place to be, if you are not a beer & wine connoisseur this is the place to be, and if your just looking for a nice spot to relax and catch a game this is the place to be. We will definitely be back as this local gem is within walking distance from the house.
Yes....as much as I love this place, its getting 3 stars. Been there a couple of times and have not been disappointed. The first star is for their beer selection (duh!) with a list that literally takes you about 20 min to read (45 if you are trying to pronounce them right) you are sure to find something that will blow your mind. So far, I must say the Germans got it right with Köstritzer Schwarzbier and Englands Monty Pythons Holy Grail is pretty damn good. Kenya's Tusker was alright. The second star is subjective but what the hell...the service is pretty good. Keep in mind the place is very small and gets crowded with just a handful of people. Yes sometimes you have to wait a while to yell your butchered pronunciation of your beer of choice to the bartender buuuuuuut they always get it right! its actually quite amazing! The third star is for the atmosphere, very laid back, no pretentious prima donna's here....everyone is there for well, the beer! make it early and you'll score a table or even a couch and if you do, well then my friend, you've got yourself one hell of an evening. Parking is usually free unless theres an even nearby in which case if you cant find metered parking you might end up paying $10 to park. Also, stay away from the blueberry beer .....
