My friend was at a loss as to where to host his 30th birthday party and I suggested The Delancey as I've hosted a few parties there in the past and they do not require a credit card to reserve a space. I called up Dana and negotiated an open bar for two hours $30 a head and it would be on the roof top. This would include beer, wine and well drinks using their house liquor, no top shelf. If you want top shelf it will be $35 a head. We opted for $30 a head. The party was on a Saturday night during prime time so I was really happy she was able to get that worked out on kind of short notice.
The management and staff here are very easy to deal with, accommodating and friendly. That really is the reason why I suggest to anyone wanting to have a party to host it here.
Anyway, on to the party. It was smooth sailing. We had our tables reserved and there were other parties going on upstairs as well but we were towards the front, closest to the bar, perfect! Okay, now the reason why I knocked a star off from my previous review was because since I opted to drink my usual vodka pineapple I ended up with basically just pineapple juice. Really...I mean it was rough. I went right back and ordered another one, hoping for the best..nada. Again, pina y no vodka! Okay, round three..went back and this time I ordered my vodka neat and got a cup of pineapple juice. I'll mix my own damn drink! hahaha So that's exactly what I did the rest of the night and that seemed to do the trick. Bartenders weren't the most friendly, even though we tipped them each time we went up there. Couldn't get a smile out of the young lady working the bar to save my life. Oh well..the good thing is that the birthday boy couldn't have been more pleased and had a wonderful 30th birthday. I can't complain about that. So, I'll say I'll go back I just know better now to order my vodka neat and mix my own drinks..oh and beware of their house wine! You will be lit like a firestick after two glasses and it can make you really really loopy..seriously dangerous during an open bar.
Dancing downstairs with a pretty bumping DJ playing Top 40, hip hop, etc. Lots of people dancing. All in all, a fun night.
P.S. They allow you to smoke on the roof top.

I hosted a party at the Delancey on a Saturday evening around 6pm. I first called up Dana to… Read more »
I went here recently for a minor celebrity's birthday party. The venue was good. They have plenty of seating upstairs and a retractable roof. The roof was intact when I went for fear of rain, but I understand they have heat lamps which they put to use in colder weather when it's open air. The party was arranged so that there was an open bar for 2 hours at $30/head. Drinks were limited to well drinks so your Jack and Coke turned into mystery whiskey and coke. The quality of the alcohol was understandably low giving the pricing situation, but I thought it poor form to water down the drinks too. Creative workarounds involved ordering the whiskey neat and a separate soda and mixing it yourself. Some opted to just drink beer by the bottle so they could accurately account for how much alcohol they were drinking. Wine was available for the brave.
Aside from the bar situation, the place was pretty cool. Seating was plentiful, and you could have really good, normal voice conversations with people while just hanging out. Having more of a communal atmosphere made the place much more desirable than it otherwise would have been. Good venue for a birthday party. Recommend.
3.25 stars
I've been here a few times. They have a fantastic DJ, but this bar just does not have the right space layout for parties -- it's got a narrow hallway and so you end up pushing people around and getting pushed around -- and most likely spilled on as well!
There is also a roofdeck with lots of foliage for the summer time and they have a makeshift bar up on the roofdeck too.
Generally just hard to dance and have fun when people are pushing around.
Co-ed bathroom is not too bad. Drink requested with cherry did not have one. Nice comfy chairs :) Drinks a bit pricey: Transplanted yuppies whining about the gentrified rent on Houston St. - two stars.

As an actual LES resident, I usually avoid this place like the plague because as nice as the roaring… Read more »
Good bar considering it's located in the crappiest area of the LES. Although the rooftop view really redeems it all. Let me be frank with the bar: it's dark as hell but the energy is definitely here. Feel free to dance the night away. The money shot is on the rooftop though. Definitely come here during warmer seasons. You will have a great time up there.
A friend of the bf was having a party here so we decided to stop by. When we arrived the place didn't look too happening. The bartenders on the first floor were just standing there, nobody was getting drinks or people had their drinks already. I liked the small room in the right corner with the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling...but I was going upstairs to the roof.
That's where the majority of the people were. There were lights decorating small plants, plenty of tables (all reserved and taken already) and still, the two bartenders looked bored, sitting on stools and just people watching.
There was music playing downstairs, but nobody dancing., Later on, a group of people headed downstairs and started their own dancing area. The place was okay, didn't have to pay a cover so that was a plus. Beer was $6.
The Delancey is as close to a club as a place can get while still being a bar. For that alone, it works for birthdays and events like that where you want to go somewhere upscale, but without having your friends incur a $20+ cover.
It's your standard bar. Bottles only on beer, cocktails, mixed drinks, etc. Nothing to special behind the bar. The dance floor gets pretty packed, but then again, it's a dance floor, so that's to be expected. Drinks are somewhat expensive, but match the decor and theme. The crowd runs the gambit from death metal dudes, to hipsters, but is primarily confused wannabe poseurs, but not in a bad way.
I use to come here for the Byte parties... That was a long Time ago... I went to see a friends band play, over the weekend. The bands play downstairs. I would imagine there are bands that play each week...They have two cute Go Go dancers....The downstairs crowd is the only thing worth coming for.....I wish the still had the Byte parties....
The main floor was a dispointment... The crowd is just not my stylo.... I'll agree with the guy that said frat douche, and Company....
There is only one area for the restrooms..So if you are downstairs with the RnR crowd, you must fight your way through the frat boy crowd, to the restrooms, which are all the way in the back... Actually you must push your way though the crowd. It feels like you are being crushed...
My hate for the LES continues. I have yet to come to this area without wanting to shoot myself about 5 minutes into the night.
The space upstairs is nice. For smokers. I am not a smoker and I don't really have a lot of patience for cancer sticks so being enveloped in smoke is not my idea of a pleasant time. Good thing there is a downstairs! Ha ha only if you want to be humped by strangers as you are moving towards the EXIT at the back of the room. I tried to stick it out for 30 minutes but even that was too painful. I only stayed that long because I had to pay cover and didn't want to feel like I completely threw $10 away. Yup, you read correctly: C-O-V-E-R.
Do not go here if a) it is a weekend night b) you live in NY and c) you are over the age of 25. If you do you will probably enjoy the music, but will not enjoy the scene.
And you'll be more than annoyed that your lime green patent leather maryjanes got stomped all over by guys trying to freak all the girls with fupas nearby!
Inexpensive drinks, live music on two floors and a roof deck where they grill burgers and dogs AND you can smoke?!
Why isn't this place perfection?
I don't know. Might be the crowd. It's not at all a bad crowd, but I never feel compelled to linger here. I'm always happy to enter, but just as happy to leave after a little while. Maybe it's better in concept than in reality, but it's still not bad. Not divey enough to be a charming dive, but not engaging enough to be much more.
I'll go back if a band I like is playing there. I'll go back if some friends are getting together on the roof deck for drinks. I just won't be staying for too long. Less of a destination than an acceptable spot to spend an hour or so as part of a night out on the LES.
This place wins big with a whole rooftop area for summer drinking pleasure. Unfortunately they do a lot of private parties, so plan ahead either by calling, or checking earlier in the day. Later on they might let you crash the party, but that's a crap shoot.
It is a nice space, with lots of big plants which are almost like trees up there. You're right next to the williamsburg bridge over there too.
I don't remember *that* much about the drinks specifically, think they were pretty normally priced, and fine. It's the space that gives this place a good rating...
Went there for a rooftop party.
The place was a tad bit difficult to get over depending on where you are coming from since it's literally right next to the bridge.
Rooftop was tropical themed with a nice layout of wooden chairs and tables. Drinks weren't expensive but they were out of small plastic cups.
It's a decent rooftop bar for the area.
Went to this place over the weekend.
Should have thought more about the name. The Delancey. How unoriginal. Hey. Wait. the lack of creativity is written all over the foreheads of the weekend regulars.
Walking to the bar and the bathroom, I felt like I was going to get attacked by a crocodile and spun around until I drowned. Bro. Yeah Bro. Bro you sweaty. Bro you stank. Stare at me any longer bro I'm going to yell "Rape!"
And the music. I mean, if you want to call it that go ahead. Seriously I think I may have been one of five women in the entire establishment.
A double rum and coke for 18 bucks could not have saved myself from boredom in this place.
No. more. chances.
I met up one of my old college buddies (who is now an NYC local) here for drinks. I love roof top lounges and I was delightfully surprised to find out that NYC does not make them shut down at midnight (damn, Chicago). It is in a somewhat dodgy part of town and the bar downstairs isn't much to look at, but head upstairs for a refreshing breeze and cool beers! You'll find yourself surrounded by plenty of foliage and the after work crowd (went on a Friday).
Why do people come here?
This place is essentially no different from any other bar. The crowd is um.... undesirable to say the least. Cookie cut out chickies with the oh so tiresome pretentious attitude and throw in alot of what i call "frat douches" wearing their "bar uniform." Trust me it's not just their style that makes them a dime a dozen... they just seem... well mass produced much like they chickie counterparts.
Nothing special about the drinks or the service.
Never made it to the roof. But unless the roof led to another bar that was good the rating stays at 2 stars.
Sorry people, this is one of the last resort places. There ain't no reason to be here unless you forced into some kind of birthday situation like me.
I've seen three shows here in the basement. It's ok. Upstairs above ground floor, there's this balcony, with a bunch of greenery. It's neat in winter, haven't been up there for summer. I think they grill in the summer, so might they have a back yard? I've come here on weekend nights when it was packed. Weird, interesting mix of people. There were rockers watching the bands and hipsters upstairs trying to hook up. This place is dark.
Saturday 2 for 1 mixed drinks specials! Went on Labor Day weekend, was really nice and empty, sat on the patio upstairs and caught up with people for a long time til closing. Staff was very friendly.
Your typical hipster bar. I'm sure I'll find myself here again, but for me, it's not the place I'll actively seek to go to.
This place is ok on a weekday, my friend bartend's their and the staff is nice.
But JEBUS this place is soooooooo annoying on the weekend. The second floor has the worst music and the worst people. My only suggestion, avoid like the plague Friday and Saturday unless you are going to a show downstairs.
The roof is fun but seems to be a private party when its busy....
There is a $50 minimum if you want to use plastic. That's just bullshit. That's all I have to say.
I had my birthday party here on the last Saturday night in February. I would love to give 5 stars just for the fact that you can book the space months in advance, and they don't require a down payment or credit card to hold the reservation. I called 3 places, and the other two wanted 400-500 dollars from me to hold space, and I would then get back whatever amount of money my guests spent in alcohol.
First of all, my friends don't drink THAT much, and second of all, I'm supposed to depend on the bartender to keep track of which patrons are my guests, and keep a running tab? I don't think so. So I was thrilled that The Delancey didn't require any kind of deposit.
I chose the space because I've always wanted an outdoor birthday party. Since I was born in late February and I live in the northern hemisphere, that's always been kind of impossible. The Delancey's rooftop garden was the next best thing. It was warm, thanks to two big industrial heat blowers and a temporary winter roof. There were lots of potted trees and greenery that probably looked healthier 3 or 4 years ago, but as long as you didn't look at them too closely, they were OK and set a nice atmosphere. It was the next best thing to actually being outdoors.
I have to take a star away because although I booked space for 40, they only gave me seating for about 20. This turned out to be OK, because people came and left, and some arrived late, so I probably didn't have more than 25 guests at any given moment. Unfortunately though, there were 5 or 6 other parties also crammed on the roof at the same time, so people were constantly walking through our area. And I do mean constantly. It never let up. Made it difficult to carry on conversations, shouting over strangers passing through the space where we had a bench to one side, and tables and chairs on the other. I wouldn't have been annoyed if it weren't a solid wall of people. But these people had to walk through the middle of our space to get from their space to the bar, or the exit or the bathrooms.
One more star removed for the semi-skeevy bridge and tunnel crowd on the first floor. It's very loud and cruisy down there, and you must elbow your way through a mob of sweaty dancing people to reach the stairs up to the roof. Although the roof is also packed, it's quiet and sane by comparison. No loud thumping music up there.
The Delancey also has a basement for live acts, but I didn't get down there.
Overall, I was quite happy with my Saturday night winter birthday party. If I go back to this place, I hope it's on a summer weeknight. I would love to see the roof without the cover on it.
Went there for their opening of the Every Wednesday Free Rooftop BBQ (7pm-1am). Got there after 9pm and they were already running out of food. Luckily I could get at least a small burger and a hot dog to fill my empty stomach. Beer was $6, Long Island Ice Tea, which I read a good review about it, was $10. It wasn't impressive at all... They had a group of rappers performing downstairs. I might not come back here if my friend DJ wasn't playing.
If you read half the reviews about The Delancey on Yelp i will tell you that they are absolutely right that this place does suck. A friend of mine had her birthday party here on Saturday, June 20th, 2009. So let me start off by listing why this place sucked!:
1. Reserved in advance with a credit card for 40 seats on the rooftop. We arrived at 9:45pm to claim our spot for 10pm but there was only enough room for 10 people. Dana, the one who took my reservation promised me the world and in the end screwed me lovely. Not only did i not get the spot i requested but the rooftop was completely packed. Reservations mean nothing and Dana is a horrible manager.
2. The staff is nice however they did absolutely nothing to fix the problem. They just kept on apologizing and looking at me saying "there is nothing i can do." They constantly offered to be me A drink, not drinks to make up for the mix up.
3. The drink prices are alright but if anything it's your typical NYC pricing for drinks. Nothing really special about their drinks.
Overall it was group of friends that made the experience great for the birthday girl other than that The Delancey gets 2 thumbs way down. You can find much better places and don't reccomend this place to anyone.
Good crowd usually (er, sometimes). The drinks are not as expensive as you might think, and I love the rooftop space. It's got a nice, jungle feel, with plenty of places to sit down and have a good time.
Sadly though, no Jungle Boogie...they do not play music up there. Not even Kool and the Gang.
At first I couldn't figure out what was missing, but once I did, it was all I could think about (and to my friends' annoyance, all I could talk about). Downstairs, the music is pumping, even though it's hit or miss (we went from Biggie's Dead Wrong to Britney Spears' Toxic). Upstairs, nothing.
I understand that you have to think of your neighbors and all that. But as Chuck Klosterman wrote: "Human interaction is meaningless without a soundtrack."
Omg, I really don't like this place too much.
I say omg because, I was praying that I could leave this place earlier than I did.
I went here to see my coworker's band play this evening, and hung around afterwards, but I'm so sad I did. I hated the corny euro-trash dance party downstairs, and the second floor's music was ok for the moment, but the unusually dressed party goers dancing without abandon turned me off. They definitely didn't seem like locals, more like upper east side folks that got lost and needed some drinks before they found their way home.
I gave it two stars because the location is very nice, and the space is large, however I just wished some different folks were inside it.
Veeeeeeeeeeeewy intewesting. The neighborhood leaves something to be desired for me. I am not a LES girl at all, so minus one star from the get-go for that. Sorry, I know.....but life is unfair and then you die, so deal with it.
The roof is IN-SANE! Okay, so lower level is your standard bar. You know-the kind with booze, people and music. NEXT! Okay, so walk upstairs to the roof and prepare to be amazed! It's like walking into the jungle and I'm not sure if there is always a grill up there, but it smelled like BBQ, which is such a rare find in the city.
The crowd was a hodgepodge of suits, punk rock kids, hipsters, yeah bros, and then....me an my high school friends. INTERESTING!
Speaking of interesting, hubby tells me that the men's room has a trough/communal urinal. WEIRD!
I totally dug the vibe at the Delancey. I was there on a Thursday night and there was open bar from 9-10, I think. I had several glasses of wine and then hung out on their fantastic patio upstairs for a while. The crowd was alright, not painfully crowded, friendly.
Diego Garcia (from Elefant) played. It was great.
I object. Yes, that's right...I object. I owed my friend a birthday drink, an appletini, $10. I know it's NYC, I know it's expensive but come on. $5 for a bottle of bud. Seriously? Cool nieghborhood, didn't make it to the roof altho I'm sure it's good.
blah.
Came for the 50's / 60's dance party downstairs - the original hipsters, represent! The Delancey filled the void that we were searching for last night: drink special, unique les experience, and tomfoolery of some sort on the dance floor CHECK....
Meanwhile, upstairs it was PACKED to the point where I don't think people could actually shake their bits without knocking others over. I guess I wasn't drunk enough to deal with that just yet so we stayed downstairs.
Had a joint birthday party here with a friend and absolutely loved it!!! We reserved a section at the rooftop of Delancey and was very pleased. The manager let us put 40 people on the guest list and did not charge the $10 cover as they normally do for the rooftop.
The rooftop was beautifully decorated with leafy green plants and benches and it felt like we were sitting in a greenhouse. There's also a bar so you don't have to go to the lower levels for a drink and a retractable roof so you can still have your party even if it rains. Plenty of seats for everyone, but that was probably due to the fact that our party was during the July 4th weekend and I guess a lot of people were out of town.
I was disappointed that they didn't play any music at the rooftop. So after everyone got caught up and updated on each other's lives, we went down to the main floor where they did have a small dance floor and music. The DJ was average as he had none of the songs that we requested, and actually played a remixed version of "Ace of Base - The Sign".
But all in all had a really great birthday here and will definitely be back!
I would reserve a table if your with a group because it can get crowded.
It's nice inside so drinks do cost a bit more.
The music is good unless your on the roof and then cannot hear any.
Getting on the roof in the summer costs 10 bucks but it's probably worth it.
I especially like the non-stuffy coolness going on.
Every Tuesday night The Delancey opens it's doors to queer New Yorkers for the weekly *snapshot* party. *snapshot* has gathered a devoted following over the past 5 years as the place to be on Tuesday nights if you are queer or queer-minded. The Delancey's heated roofdeck gives one the sensation of having a cocktail in the rainforest! Live female DJ's are brought in to provide the sickest beats as hot girls and bois down 2-4-1 drinks from 10-11 and dance the night away.

Why is the Delancey awesome ? A lot of nice people and a huge outside area on the up floor, like a tropical paradise ! I love it !
I fell in love with The Delancey at their F*ck Valentine's Day Party in '07. The amazing music, free open bar and blow up dolls made for a great time.
On a regular weekend night, The Delancey is just as fun. It's dancey, but not clubby. Not pretentious or cheesy. I've thrown two parties here, one on a Friday and one on a Saturday. Both times I reserved a table on the main floor in advance, which turned out perfectly. There's no bottle service, so you don't have to throw down any $$ or even a credit card to make your reservation. The music is always great. I've noticed the crowd has gotten a little preppier lately. But it's a pretty mixed bag. The main floor is where the DJ is, upstairs is the tropical rooftop (no music) and downstairs there's live music. Something for everyone. Once midnight hits you might have to wait to get in, depending on the night.
Besides maybe having to wait in a line, I can't think of one bad thing to say about this place. It's my go-to when I want to dance. Always a fun time.
Wha Happen'd?
So on Friday night I left the comforts of Verlaine to meet up with a college friend at The Delancey. He had reserved a little room on the first floor. My ass is sore from kicking it so hard after leaving Verlaine for this place. To be fair I only experienced the first floor, it was terrible. The first floor is home to the DJ who was spinning B side tracks for three girls while a pack of oogling males swarmed around them salivating from the mouth. I hope to goodness the rooftop is better. The highlight of my night was that the bartender looked like Buffalo Bill, (the killer from "Silence of the Lambs"). "It puts the lotion in the basket, or it gets the hose."
If I had my druthers I wouldn't return here.
Fantastic roof-top patio covered in "tropical" plants and trees. A great winter refuge with heat fans and not too many greasy people.
Solid music on the ground floor, no puke on the bathroom floor. I'd say an impressive four-star Saturday late night desination.
I can't believe it's taken me 143 reviews to review The Delancey. What have I been doing with myself?!?! It's almost that good, that things go without saying.
This is probably the perfect spot for everyone you know. I remember we used to come here for some awesome shows in The Downstairs most notably Stage, back in the day. It's a great performance space! They have a bar downstairs, it's dark, great sound, stage is a bit small--but the rocking out definitely ensues. Then came the day we went for a show there...on the roof?!?! ROOOOOF?!?! What roof??? Oh yes, dear friends--probably the most undiscovered but also one of the coolest roofs in the city. I swear they have a waterfall on the roof, but some would refer to it as a "fountain." It's a whole outdoor garden, foliage deck patio amount of good times. Sometimes with a side of delicious celebrities. OH! AND yes, they have a bar up here too. Now, Evening on The Delancey roof #1--there was a free BBQ! Holla! Burgers, Hotdogs, Veggie Burgers. Score!
So we eventually moved it down to The Main Floor. It's all loungy and romantic yet, dance party like. And they have a lovely little fireplace, which is AWESOME come those winter months. Oh right, and there's an even bigger bar down here as well. Drinks all around are also on the affordable scale. Now, as always--to the bathrooms. Another communal like arrangement. Stalls are differentiated, but the washing of the hands is a shared experience. And always on the "good enough" clean side. There's an ATM machine right outside as well. Although, if memory serves me correctly--the crazy fee isn't worth it. I heart The Delancey--it's so underrated and so perfect!
This is where I go to shake my badonkadonk because they actually play good music that I know and not that lame-hipster-emo-bullcrap that you'll find at other LES/EV spots.
Be sure to have a few drinks before you go since the bar tends to get really packed... plus you won't be able to drink properly while busting a move anyway.
The Delancey is a place I've only recently found out about, mostly because my good friend Bobby Black (senior Editor of High Times Magazine) has a weekly DJ gig called Contact High there. So, whenever I'm in NYC (never often enough), I make sure I hang out there during his gig.
I love the multiple levels, which consists of a downstairs room where bands play (more on that in a minute), the main floor where there is a killer DJ booth set up, and the upstairs open-air patio and bar for smokers. I don't smoke cigs, but it's cool that those who do can still hang out and drink.
The staff is very friendly and super-efficient, and the drinks are strong at a reasonable price for NYC.
So much so, that I decided to have my 45th B-day Bash there back in May of 2007. Bobby agreed to let me book some bands, and we split the DJ duties.
As it turned out, it ended up being the BEST B-DAY EVER, with a killer line up consisting of BAPTIZED BY FIRE (featuring the amazing Jesse Blaze Snider, son of Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider); SHE WOLVES (with former Cycle Slut From Hell Donna She Wolf); THE MYNKS (an awesome female-fronted rock band) and CHIBA KEN, who were cool enough to fill in last minute for VULGARAS, who unfortunately cancelled due to a nasty flu bug that nearly felled us all.
Then we had some surprise guests for the Bash (which also doubled as a REALITY CHECK TV Real Rock Divas DVD release party): my old friend RICHIE SCARLET, guitarist extraordinaire, and Queen Vixen, also x-Cycle Sluts, came out and jammed with She Wolves! It was pure heaven, lemme tell ya.
The staff and management were stoked at such an amazing show and a great turnout (tough in NYC on a week nite, nowadays), and everyone who showed up really had a blast!
Truly a nite to remember...can't wait to go back and see everyone again. Thanx to all involved for a really great time!
