Opened in September of 1914 and standing proud today, The Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Washington is without a doubt one of the true hotel gems of the west. I mean a walk around the lobby alone is worth a visit to this marvelous property. I was fortunate enough to spend a few days here over the summer and have to admit that I was blown away at the grandeur that this hotel exudes.

I rolled into The Davenport Hotel with my rental car and pulled into their wrap around driveway. The valet service was $24 per night (plus tips to the valets), which I felt was a little high for a hotel in a small town. But no matter what city you visit, when you stay in a 4-star property, expect to pay 4-star prices. In any event, the valets were always super friendly and always quick to retrieve my car.

Upon entering the aforementioned lobby, you instantly get why Conde Nast Traveler named The Davenport Hotel both a "Gold List" property and one of the "Most Excellent Hotels" in 2008. Just a remarkable sight to see upon checking in.

After gawking at all of the marble, comfy couches & chairs, and the collection of art work, it was time to head upstairs and check out my suite. Upon walking into the elevator, I realized that The Davenport Hotel was one of those lodges that required your key card in order for it to work. It will surely keep away those pesky non key card holding people. But seriously it is a nice security feature.

I was placed on the 4th floor and just a short walk from the elevator. One of the best and worst moments any person has when staying at a hotel is that few seconds you have between sliding in your key card and opening that hotel door. What will be on the other side? Will I love it? Will I hate it?

Okay I loved it this time. Wow! Nice size space that was honestly way too much for just yours truly. The living room area provided me with a coffee table, two couches, a comfy chair or two, a flat screen television (unfortunately not an LCD or Plasma), mini-bar, work desk, a few mirrors, and even a sink. That is a lot to take in right away.

As I walked to the left of the living  room area, I wound up in a small walkway with his and her sinks, or in my case mine and mine sinks. Off to the side was a huge closet, with a safe, bath robes, and an iron with an ironing board. I then popped my head into the small yet lovely bathroom, which offered me both a deep tub and a walk-in shower.

I will be the first to admit that I am a bit of a hotel nerd. I love staying at them and get equally thrilled upon finding a unique or quirky feature at each one. The Davenport Hotel provided me with an "OMG, that is pretty cool" moment that only a serious travel geek would enjoy.

Instead of using "Do Not Disturb" and "Clean Room" signs on their doorknobs, The Davenport Hotel instead has installed a light switch looking object next to the door that indicates whether you need a room cleaning or want to be left alone.

Simply tap on it and it will light up both inside where you are tinkering with it and outside of your door. Yes it is not flying to the moon or solving world hunger, but I snapped a picture of it and thought it was pretty neat.

I decided that before I get all squeaky clean, it would be wise if I checked out where I would be sleeping tonight. So I walked back into the living room and then off to the right to check out the my bedroom. It was a nice size room that was mostly taken over by this enormous king size bed. I mean this truly was a massive piece of furniture.

The headboard was made up of quality hand carved mahogany and the mattress was covered by a healthy amount of pillows and an truly inviting comforter. Above the bed were two recessed lights that I assume were placed there in the event one of the two people wanted to read while the other slept.

In addition to the "Davenport Bed" and large marble walk-in shower, here are some of the amenities included during your stay at The Davenport Hotel:

   * Smell good with Lady Primrose bath products.

   * High-speed wired and wireless internet (Every hotel should have   free internet!).

   * Complimentary local phone calls.

   * The hotel offers 27 flat-screen televisions (pictured above), but the tower offers 32 LCD HD televisions.

   * 24-hour business center.

   * Full service concierge.

   * Indoor pool and jacuzzi with complimentary towels.

   * 24-hour fitness center with complimentary towels and fresh fruit.

   * Town car service within 2 miles of the hotel.

   * Historic walking tour available.

   * Pet walking.

   * Plus be sure to stop into the candy shoppe, which is located in the lobby by the entrance, to purchase some Bruttles soft peanut brittle. It is seriously great and very addictive (I had plenty!).

So the next time your plans find you in "The Lilac City," be sure to check out or into easily one of the most popular addresses in town. Yup The Davenport Hotel is truly something special in Spokane.

We stayed here after living in the bush in Idaho for  two weeks.  We and everything we owned were covered in a dusty film on a base of caked mud and reeking of softwood smoke and ash.  We pulled into the Davenport with the 20 year old car suspension groaning, the roof rack stacked with bikes, tents, burnt camp chairs & over heated ice boxes and our dirty faces.

Let me say that from the moment the valet took my keys they treated us low-caste scum like kings!  We'll be back - absolutley!

Went to our Spokane office for work and stayed here overnight...hello safari!

I stayed in the new tower which is jungle themed. Lobby wasn't too bad, but it did get to be a little much. Stained glass tiger windows, leopard print chairs, elephant prints in my room!

Room was spacious and clean, furnishings were nice - didn't hear a peep from anyone in the other rooms. The staff were very polite.

Met my colleagues for dinner and had a lovely chicken breast with mashed potatoes and green beans with a delicious cherry cocktail. Met them the next morning for breakfast and had eggs, bacon and an English muffin which you really can't screw up.

I would stay here again, but probably in the old tower, just to check it out.

Hello and Okay-

No bull here. I am in Spokane, WA. A very nice city with friendly people, but not SFO or SEA.  In a way, thankfully so.

This property, it's history, and fine condition is amazing.

Read the history, understand where you are, enjoy the robe, wonderful real swimming pool, nice workout room, excellent food, attention to detail (a pillow sham for my water glass...homemade soft candies...fine bedding...great overall feel) and just relax.

Both my wife and I travel over 100 nights per year.... one of the BEST places either of us (we are not together on this trip - she is the one who recommended this) have every stayed.  When you consider what you get for the dollar.... amazing...it price as a Hilton Garden Inn in Seattle with plastic everything and auto slamming doors!

Many business people who travel as much as me have told me how much they enjoy this property.  If it was any smaller - I wouldn't write a review...just keep it for us!

I hope you enjoy The Davenport as much as I...especially for my or your first time-

Cheers-

I have a lot of yelping to catch up on, so I'm going to Super Man that H** and bullet through these. Don't worry, I'll remain as thorough as usual.

Background: LA girl flies up to Spokane WA to meet the Beau's family. Sleep deprived? Yes. Hungover from the 2 pitchers of beer at Mt. Spokane by herself waiting for the people that actually knew how to ski to come back? Yes.

*Service - Kind and polite although not the brightest server in the server crayon box.

*Food - I got the prawns and scallops, which were very good. I tried some of the duck and it was well cooked and not gamey or fatty at all.

*Ambiance - We sat in the actual dining area but walked through the whole hotel. Very nice and historical.

*Bonus - Random patron falling from having too much to drink. I didn't actually see it, but I heard it - not sure if this is necessarily a good or bad bonus...it was a Wednesday night.

All in all, the food was great and the evening was pleasant. i did not spit on anyone, choke on my wine, spill or sit there smiling with parsley in my teeth the whole. Phew!

I just stayed at the Davenport Tower, and had a suite.  Unfortunately, there is no separate listing for the tower, which is basically it's own hotel.  I say unfortunately because I walked into the room and felt like I stepped into a drag queen's house:  tack-o-rama throne chairs, weird faux ostrich leather couch, and a mirror behind the bed.  Just plain tacky.  I would recommend AGAINST staying in the tower, but still strongly recommend the original Davenport, as it is quite the experience.

If I were to give the Tower it's own star rating, I'd give it 2 stars, because of the premium price coupled with the tacky safari theme.

I am not a classy broad (as is evidenced by my former review)

I do, however, require a modicum of class in my out-of-town accommodations.

Things I love about staying at the Davenport Hotel (tower, actually, I have never stayed in the main hotel)

1: Safari theme:
It's classy-trashy. Animal-print bed linens paired with a GIANT mirror behind the bed. YEAH! AMIRIGHT?!

2: There is a fountain in the lobby

3: There is a tiger in the lobby

4: THE SHOWER:
O. M. G. The shower. I want to pack up the contents of my house and move to Spokane just so that I can live in the shower. No... I don't actually want to live in Spokane again (under any circumstances) but this shower is the best i've ever used. It's got more square footage than my entire bathroom at home with a mega-huge shower head.

I almost bought the Davenport exclusive mattress when I returned home from my first stay there. I still think about it. I tell everyone in town to stay there. Because, really, what's the difference between this world-class hotel that has seen the likes of Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Mary Pickford, Clark Gable, John Philip Sousa, Lawrence Welk, Marian Anderson, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Benny Goodman as guests.

You think Lawrence Welk would stay at the Holiday Inn express by the airport? NO. NO HE WOULD NOT!

And neither should you.

This concludes my second visit to the Davenport, with only 6 years between reservations.  My experience was exactly the same this time around:  Easy valet, cordial and efficient front desk staff, clean and well lit common areas, nice comfy room, and overall relaxing.

I've always enjoyed the look of the Davenport, the old world hotel décor being a very nice change from the colder modern, new construction hotels.  I'm not completely sure I extend that same feeling into the Peacock Lounge - I certainly like dropping in here for drinks and even food, but the look (with their dead peacocks in the entry and over the bar, dark fuzzy peacock wall paper, dark carpet, and wood-esque tables) always makes me feel like I'm underground in a speak-easy or a Reno, Nevada casino.  The main restaurant is nice to eat a meal in and I like the lobby service they also provide.  Food is pleasant and decently priced for the location.

I always like the rooms, although I can safely say now that your experience will vary with price and size, much more than I would have expected.  Our first stay was in a higher-end room, this one (for reason's I'll skip but had to do with "last minute") was smaller and was much less impressive.  Not a show stopper, but if your visit is going to require you spending 1) romantic time, or 2) in-room business time (neither applied to my later trip), go for the bigger suites.

Sarah means princess in Hebrew. Princesses need/deserve castles. This is probably why I worked in the luxury resort and wine industry before switching to corporate sales. It entitled me to work out of a princess like workplace. This background has created a monster of hotel snob. I don't have to stay in five star accommodations each time I travel but if you tell me it is supposed to be luxury then I expect it and I have a very discriminating palate.

I have stayed at the Davenport many times. The area in which I was forced to live due to where I worked in Eastern WA was AWFUL! I had to get away and get away often in order to keep some kind of sanity. The Davenport was a frequent oasis for me during this time.

I prefer to stay in the Davenport Tower located across the street vs. the main hotel. The Tower is new and modern and has a safari theme throughout. I want one of the leopard chaise lounges that are in the room so badly it hurts! The rooms in the main hotel are a bit to old lady like for my personal tastes but beautiful all the same.

Even if you aren't going to stay here it is worth the trip to see. The architecture is gorgeous, history of the place amazing and the service is A+. I highly recommend it here. Also a nice gesture they do for their guests is free town car service they will drop you off and pick you up within a certain mile radius from the hotel at any point, COMPLIMENTARY!

In fact I love it here so much I will be staying here in just a few weeks for my litte sister's 23rd bday!

I've got to give props to Walt Worthy for renovating this place and helping bring Spokane back to live a little bit. After staying in the Towers next door, I don't love the Davenport as much as I originally did, but its still a great hotel to stay in and visit. I say visit because having a classy meal there is a good treat, and I've also taken my little cousins on a walk through the lobby around Christmas which they loved! I've also been to amazing weddings here and so many after hours business events that I can't even count. If you can afford it, its a great place to have an event.

When you stay here please treat yourself to a massage downstairs. And harass the parking attendants. I only say that because they are my friends.

Never thought I'd stay in a 5-star hotel, but then...I found the Davenport.  I could summarize the splendor in two words: Pure Heaven.

I stayed in the main hotel, so this review does not concern the Tower.  The rooms are impressively appointed, yet simple and in good taste.  The linens are plush and soft, with mattresses that conform perfectly.  Amenities include a flat screen TV, a thermostat for temp control, giant closet for all your clothes, ample room to stretch, heavy blinds to black out the sun for sleeping in late, electronic housekeeping signals (SO COOL!), doorbells, and...oh my gawd...the walk-in shower!!  My fantasies have come true!  I was also impressed by the eco-friendly soap, shampoo/conditioner, and lotion dispensers.  True, I can't take those fun, little bottles home with me, but at least no one is throwing them away.

Did I mention the exquisite food?  Savor the Sunday brunch - especially the fondue fountain!  Hang out in the Peacock Lounge for cocktails and be sure to look up when you walk in.  Dine in fancy-shmancy style at the Palm Court.  Hit up the Candy Shoppe for the BEST soft peanut brittle you've ever imagined.

I also highly recommend a tour of the mezzanine, especially the Elizabethan Room.  The photos around the hotel, depicting people and functions from it's early days, are fascinating.  The lobby is also grand and inviting, with plenty of casual, comfy seating, and a Starbucks.  Here, you can also find the Concierge and computers available for guest use.

If I could afford it, I'd friggin' LIVE here.  That said, the prices are steep (most rooms start at $200), but I've heard that specials are available from time to time...especially if you're attending an event hosted by the hotel (such as the reunion I just went to).  In that case, take them up on the discount offered.  Our rooms were sweet - and only $130/night!   I suggest self-parking in the garage across the street, at $17 per day (valet is $24).

Overall, everyone here was super friendly and eager to help make our stay perfect...and it was.  I'll come back any chance I get!

I stayed in the Davenport Tower and not the main hotel.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Davenport Tower.  The hotel rooms are well appointed.  Personally, I liked the Safari theme that runs throughout the whole hotel.  We had a painting of rhinos in our room.  At times though it can be a bit over the top, for instance the zebra print toilet paper cover.

I have to give high marks to the bedding.  It occurs to me that one of, if not the main service one is buying from a hotel is a comfortable place to sleep.  At the Davenport, they take bedding seriously.  I had a great night's sleep there on a very comfortable king sized bed that was soft but yet still firm enough to support my back.  I woke up early at about 6am but felt fully rested and refreshed even though I didn't get to sleep until midnight.

The Davenport is also conveniently located within walking distance of pretty much everything.  Many different restaurants, shopping, the riverfront park, and a large and fairly new 20 screen movie theater.

Next time I go, I'm going to pony up the extra $20 and stay in the historic part of the hotel.

I've become a jaded enough traveler that now that my expectations have been lowered to the point where I just hope for a clean Econolodge. Or if there are roaches, that they are at least well-behaved.

So imagine my surprise when I pulled into the Davenport on business.

The hotel is split into a main part and the tower. Parking is in the deck next door. I stayed in the Tower which has a wilderness motif. The rooms are generous with a walk-in shower, safe in the room (really, none of my stuff is that expensive), flat-screen TVs and housekeepers that bring you peanut butter brittle with the evening turn-down service.

Small details are well thought-out. There's a fitness room, mostly cardio, with small monitors on all the machines. Headphones are included on the machine with disposable headphone covers adjacent. A small pool is present and, in theory, there is some sort of spa although I never checked it out. The fact that a number of people were walking around in robes would seem to confirm that a spa is present....or that this place is a front for a porno set.

On the ground floor of the tower is a lounge, espresso bar and the main desk. Concierge and servers are all professional and quick. Drinks in the lounge are reasonable with TV screens above the bar. Interestingly enough, all the servers here were abnormally attractive. Enough so, that one evening over drinks I was musing whether they were running some sort of Stepford program in the basement here.
But that's ok, my silence was won over with the peanut butter brittle.

A gorgeous hotel in Spokane of all places. My coworkers warned me how beautiful the newly renovated hotel was, but I was still not prepared for its opulent lobby area. The rooms and restrooms are rather spacious. Only one thing kept this review from being a five-star rating:

I checked in for my one-night stay late in the evening (maybe around 9pm), then returned to the studio for more work. The check-in process was a little weird as they didn't have me in the system or something, but it eventually got worked out and they gave me a key. The next morning, as I'm getting ready, I got a knock on the door, which I thought was my breakfast order. Instead, I am "greeted" by two guys straight out of "Men in Black" - security earphones and all. While the one guy interrogates me, the other guy stands ominously off to the side surveying the floor for any suspicious movement on my part.

The MIB interrogator proceeds to tell me that I am not in their system as having checked in and wonders how I got in the room. WTF? Um, the check-in lady gave me a key. After a few more questions, he deems that I am not some freeloading squatter and leaves me be. So that little chat sets me back a good 15+ minutes in my getting ready routine, and to add insult to injury, they had systematically canceled my breakfast order because they deemed it unnecessary to fulfill an order for a room which is supposed to be vacant. Which makes sense and all, but couldn't they have called me first to confirm?!

Despite this weird experience, I would still stay at the Davenport again should I find myself in Spokane ever again. Hopefully, next time not in the dead of winter.

It's like Vegas in the middle of b-f Washington!  I booked this hotel for a business trip in mid-July not expecting too much for Spokane.  The price was very reasonable and I was more than impressed with my stay.  The hotel itself is divided into two parts, the main hotel, and the newer, posh Tower side.  I didn't stay in the main hotel so I can't say too much about that, but the Tower side was sparkling new when I arrived.

The first thing that may confuse you is the overly designed safari theme that is EVERYWHERE.  From the lobby restaurant's ostrich skinned seats to the leopard print barca lounger in your room, you just can't get away from it.  You are not in South Africa and you are not in Vegas.  You are in the middle of nowhere Spokane (which you will be reminded of as soon as you look out the window).

That said, it was the most comfortable luxurious pseudo-vegas safari hotel I have ever stayed in.  I have dreams about the bed I slept in..  the bedding is outstanding and just hugs you to sleep.  It's just heavenly.  If I had more time I would've dropped some cash on bringing this little bit o heaven home with me.

I wanted to try out the spa the next morning after my business meeting, but could not get myself to get up early and leave my happy spot.  Do yourself a favor and buy the bedding.. you will not find anything other like it (or buy me the bedding because I didn't have time).

Oh yeah one retarded thing, I was having trouble with my wireless so I called the front desk to bring up an ethernet cable.  They require a $5 deposit on the cable (bleh) and when the guy delivered it I didn't bother to look at it and found he brought up a telephone cable.  Fortunately I got my wireless working. :P

This hotel was recently renovated- I can remember having my junior prom there in high school before the big redo. It was still amazing all those years ago, but now it is simply gorgeous and so chic. I went here for one of my best childhood friends' weddings and we had a fabulous time! The spa associated with the hotel does the most amazing air brushing make-up and hair!

She spent her wedding night there and said it was spectacular! I was in heaven and the drinks at the Peacock Lounge off the main lobby were delicious and creative.

Good job Davenport! This is a don't miss in Spokane- just watch out for the ghost.

I was lucky enough to stay at The Davenport on several business trips to Spokane with my previous employer.  *LOW WHISTLE*  This place may knock your socks off.   The original hotel was built in 1914 and the building has quite a history.  The interior design is resplendent and will take you back to a time when railroad tycoons reigned.  In fact, you step inside and the Vanderbilts, Crockers, Stanfords, Hollidays and Huntingtons surround you.  The luxury of the grand entrance hall will embrace you and the seating area and Romanesque interior rivals some of the fancy pants hotels that I saw in Europe.

The rooms are above average in space and in interior decoration.  The bed is super comfortable.  As a former road-warrior, I rarely have the opportunity to say that about hotel beds!  The king-sized room that my travel agent booked also contained a refrigerator AND mini-bar and was super quiet.

I must say that this was one of my favorite locations.  If you aren't already aware, Spokane is an academic area with many universities and medical centres.  Plus, it is the host city of one of the flatest and fastest marathon / half-marathon courses (http://brrc.net/archiv...).  The people that I have met there are nice.  The air is crisp and the nature that surrounds you around the Spokane Falls area is truly magnificent.  If you are a nature lover, there is a GREAT walking/jogging trail that runs alongside the river, which is only three or four blocks away from the hotel.

If you are on your way to Idaho for some skiing, this is a great place to visit!  I definitely would recommend this hotel to ANYONE desiring a little luxury without a huge dent in their wallet!

I have not stayed din the Daven Port Hotel but I have taken a tour of it. I really thought that the place was amazing and beautiful in so many ways. All of the displays were put together wonderfully....and I like that they have all the old time pictures hanging on the walls. It kind of gave you an old time feeling like walking into the past. I just wish that I would have been able to stay there but it probably would have crreeped me out a bit.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel in Spokane, WA for our 1 yr wedding anniversary. Upon our arrival, everyone offered to help us with our bags or whatever we needed.

My husband sprung for a Parlour suite and it was nothing short of beautiful and amazing! The bed was so large, high and fluffy that I needed a stool to get up into it. Once there, you didn't want to go anywhere else.

The restaurants at the hotel were also perfect, delicious and offered everything anyone would ever want. They had the most amazing American breakfasts which was even served with freezer strawberry jam...my absolute favorite!

The downtown Spokane area was old, rustic and very interesting. Great location to stay and great area to take in sight seeing for people who enjoy history.

I would go back in a heart beat and have never heard anything bad about this hotel.

I'm a little biased, as I live in Spokane, but this is as nice a hotel as most people will ever stay in and at a fraction of what you'd pay elsewhere.  In short, I believe the impeccable renovation of this amazing hotel has had as big a hand in the transformation of Spokane as anything.

The stay starts first class with valet parking and continues with very attentive staff.  The lobby of the early 1900s hotel is a work of art.  The recent remodel / reopening has recaptured the elegance and class that one expects in a top-flight hotel.  As for the hand-craftmanship - be sure to visit the balcony on the 2nd floor.  The original crown molding was done by a man and his female apprentice that ended up being much more.  Look for the special message he left for her that can still be found in the Northeast corner just before the stairs take you to the upper meeting rooms.

As for the rooms: They are spacious and gorgeous.  The beds are as soft and comfortable as you will find at any 5 Star resort.  The mattress is great, but when topped with the feather bed and soft sheets they take on a whole new feel.  They are almost as nice as my bed at home.

If you are looking for a great place to stay on business - you can't go wrong here.  Wi Fi is available in the room (as it is in the whole downtown Spokane corridor).  The rooms are typically quiet, and there is a useful work desk.  It is centrally located to downtown businesses and close to a dozen plus fun and / or trendy restaurants.

As for those that want a romantic get away:  It is time to give Spokane and the Davenport a look.  My wife and I stay there on occasion when we have events downtown and we don't want to have to worry about a designated driver.  Save a couple hundred dollars vs. a similar hotel in a bigger city and enjoy the fun activities and dining options available here.

Wow...what a great place and so completely unexpected.  I stay in a lot of hotels all over the US and this is better than some I've paid $500/night for.

This is a terrific hotel with strking common areas and meeting rooms/ball rooms.  The guest rooms are updated, stylish, and comfortable.  The beds are terrific.  I slept very well.  The bathrooms are clean, stylish, and comfortable.

I really can't believe this place is in Spokane!  The dude who built it must have been out of his fking mind.....but still just stay there and go with it!!

Review 5/9/09:  This review is for the Safari Room restaurant.  The menu is pretty simple, but tasty. The hotel is so classy and trendy, the menu didn't really match the ambieance. I got the oven roasted chicken breast, w stuffed proscuitto and shitake mushrooms, smothered gravy. It was delish, but would have liked more shitake as I didn't taste any. My  mango mojita was so good. Share a flatbeead with your party! Get the thai chicken peanut flatbread. Yummy! If I ever find myself back in Spokane. I'll be back!

We stayed in the main hotel. This is a great hotel! If I was going to Spokane again, I would definitely stay here. The decor, beds, cleanliness, and most of the service are top notch. And yes the bed was really, REALLY comfortable, including the sheets and pillows and the awesome touch of overhead, recessed lighting (over the bed), in addition to side lamps. Housekeeping was bizarrely young and unprofessional. A few annoying housekeeping glitches made me question staying here a few times, but the beauty, history, location, service, and atmosphere made up for it.

This hotel is actually on the National Historic Landmark listing. The Davenport used to be world renown back in the early 1900's. It is one of the most beautiful buildings you will ever see. The interior is so grandeur, and many of the rooms within the hotel are off limits. It's like a museum and hotel in one. Their food is really good also.

I am staying at the Davenport Tower on a interview trip. yes, this potential employer put me up in the best place in town. Initially, i was disappointed to not be in the Davenport Hotel versus the Davenport Tower. However, I spent my first evening in the lobby of the Davenport Tower, in front of the fireplace with my laptop and lovely, non intrusive service.... perfect. And the turndown service is awesome...

I decided for my second night in town, I would walk across the street to the lobby of the Davenport Hotel and hang out there for the evening, expecting that it would be a superior experience. I was wrong. While the interior is fascinating and full of history and interesting to walk around in and look at the historic photos, there was a really obnoxious live band playing bad 80's music, completely destroying the vibe that I sought.

I was happy to return to the lobby of the Davenport Tower and enjoy my fireplace and after dinner drink and the relative peace... Plenty of activity around me, however a bubble of solitude in front of the fireplace to gather my thoughts.

And, yes the bedding is wonderful, service was impeccable.. a gal could get used to this. I echo the sentiment of another yelper, I could *live* here!

The Davenport part deux.

One part Spokane, one part stylish Manhatten neuvo, kick it with some jungle theme and garnish with some tiger print.

Stir and voila: a bad idea.

I want to like this place, and maybe it will improve, but my first impression is ugh. It could have been so much nicer, but the safari motif makes me think of Tony Montana's living room.

This review is for the bar at the Davenport, I didn't stay there as a guest.

Well what can I say?  Have you ever been to Elephant Bar?  This was like the same thing to me.  You enter, and it seems luxurious, but then you enter the bar.  I was expecting a nice chic place to get drinks, instead I was being ogled by old men and watching baseball.  This may be unfair to the bar, it IS a hotel and not a club.  But my friend made it out to be one of the nicest places in Spokane.  If it is, I'm worried for my nightlife.

It was very cramped.  There is a long table set up for patrons between the bar and booths which made it impossible to walk out without asking someone to shift.  The bartenders were cool though, and the drinks were OK.  My friend could not eat the 'pizza' she ordered, which was flat bread with arugula, oil and....honey?!  Why the honey?  Either way, I was famished so I ate a piece, and I let the liquor take care of the rest of the evening.

I was not impressed.  I expected more.  Perhaps I'll stay as a guest and really love the hotel, but the bar is only so-so.

edit:
The love potion cocktail was delicious.  Service is good.  The bartenders are very accommodating and want to make sure you enjoy your drink.  They also have food, but its only OK.  The tomato basil soup was creamy enough in my opinion, but I guess it would be great if you like pureed tomatoes heated with basil sprinklings.  It was just a touch too acidic for my tongue.  I like tomato-basil soup to be creamy.  The flat breads are...interesting.  I haven't voted good or bad yet.

This place is beautiful and the rooms were fantastic! The bed was so comfortable we stayed in it until 10AM! The rooms smelled really good and clean. The decor is urban-safari and very cool. The robes were so comfy and the shower was a nice and open. (no shower curtains needed). Room service was prompt. They even had contact lense solution brought up to the room when I forgot mine. My only complaint would be to expand the room service menu after midnight. By far, the best place I've stayed in. Will stay there again!

The real Deal. Walt Worthy made a great gift to Spokane when he spent a small fortune reviving the historic Davenport. No corners have been cut. The place is what a hotel and customer service business should be. Amazing facilities, very reasonable pricing, truly excellent service and the most comfortable rooms anywhere. I live in Boston, I have stayed in the Waldorf, Omni Parker House and other world famous, luxury hotels and they don't compare to the Davenport. Buy coffee in the lobby coffee shop and receive free refills all day. The Sunday brunch is well worth the price with all you can eat/drink champagne.

I love classic hotels, and this one is a beautiful example. If you stay here, make sure you stay in the original 100-year old building, not the tower which was built about three years ago. They make flakey peanut brittle downstairs they is incredible. There is a free sample in you room that will leave you hooked. I always stay here when I have business in Spokane.

First things first: the BEDDING at the Davenport is the best I've ever slept on! We actually purchased the sheet set in their boutique downstairs after getting the best, softest, most comfortable night's sleep in a long time. The hotel is a dream of romantic whimsy and historical charm ~ highly recommended for romantic couples and conventions alike!!!!!

I hate to be the one person here NOT giving The Davenport Hotel a 5 star rating. Anyway, they do deserve more like 4 1/2 stars. I stayed here for one night last weekend for a friend's wedding. The Davenport is truly a beautiful hotel, and best hotel in Spokane.
First off, let me say everyone who works at the Davenport is extremely friend, helpful, and courteous. Being 23, I'm not called Mr. Ng too often. Second, the hotel is pet friendly, and the guests and staff do not give you that snooty look of "what is that person and their dog doing here" when you walk around.  They also have a nice pet walking area, and supposedly complimentary pet walking..but I didn't try it. My rate was $179 for the night..a little higher than I wanted to pay, but it's justified given how beautiful and clean the place is, and given that it's dog friendly with no pet fee/deposit etc. Extremely worth it...it may cost you $30-60 a weekend alone finding someone else to pet sit your dog.
Anyway the rooms were medium size but with beautiful furnishing..I do with they upgraded their TVs to LCDs...it would just add the glamor..but the marble floor bathrooms, bathrobes (available for purchase, but provided anyway, and all free amenities included...and the coveted Sewing KIT?!? that's a nice touch. The weight room is small, but clean and it has everything you need and free apples. The pool is nice too, but its quite small, and I wish they had an outdoor pool that would be at least seasonally open.
The lobby has some nice history to it, and there's a great section on the second floor with some wall engravings if you want a clever way to propose to your significant other..let me know if you want to find it...I made the mistake of showing it to my gf without telling her clearly beforehand..I'm just SHOWING you this heheh..oops. Staying at the Davenport definitely makes you want to never settle for anything less ever again....I think I know where I'm staying next time I'm in town for Bloomsday.

After a 17 year slumber and 30 million dollar face lift ,this long awaited comeback proved worth the wait.  The Davenport is an elegant world class hotel, that makes me want a time machine to go and check out this ultra chic era of the early 1900's. Commercial real estate developers and now local super heroes Walt Worthy and his wife, Karen, bought the empty landmark for $6.5 million in May 2000 with a goal of returning it to its original spender, only better.  It proved to be no easy task as it had major issues and needed to be taken into modern times while being true to the history. Detailed refurbishing and artisans from all over the world  contributed to the best comeback story of the region.  The stunning lobby hosts one  of my favorite large fireplaces and makes this not only a grand hotel to stay at but a great place for dinner, events or just to hang out at. Original owner and waffle king Louis Davenport , now represented by a life size sculpture reading a paper in lobby would be proud. as a peacock of the refurbished hotel. A must stop in Spokane, even if you just have time for a self guided tour. You'll feel like you're at a museum, but you may want to book a room and enjoy the amenities and unsurpassed service. The espresso bar in the lobby serves exceptional coffee.

I'm presently at the D'port as I write this. Actually the new  tower section kitty corner from the original. Nice digs folks. I gotta tell you though, the "theme" decor is a bit strange. Somewhere along the line when planning the new tower, they decided to go for the jungle theme look. It definitly is in the "what were they thinking?" catagory. Everything, including the toilet paper covering is in that leoperd skin /jungle-wood lookalike. Chairs, tables, curtains...everything. The pictures on the wall sort of look like they came from a sale at Target.  Ok fine...so what about the rest of it. Top notch service all the way. THe front desk is a bit clunky in execution and understaffed at times. One overwhelmed employee checking in a load of people was kind of painful just to watch.  The rooms are hospital clean folks. No dustbunnys, scuffs on the walls, odd stains on the carpet or (gag) the bed coverings. Room temp is dead on to your likeing.  The hotel resteraunt is decent but honestly, you dont need to use it. The D'port is located right smack dab in the middle of about three dozen (at least) places to eat within a minute or two/or less walking distance. If you want even less formal, the River Place mall is a block away and it is loaded with places to eat.  Huge place and if you're a mall rat or are bringing some teenagers with you on the trip, a great place to dump them off..Downtown Spokane was one of the first places  in the country many years ago to clean out the hookers, winos and drug addicts from the business district and turn it  into one damn fine renovation. Its a nice place to walk around and hang. We did a walk thru too by the way of the Old D''port. What a makeover..!!!  30 years ago, this place was a dump. It smelled like vomit  and cheap cigars and you had to dodge drunks everywhere. Talk about sanatizing the area. This place is total class. I give it 4 plus stars only because they made a mistake letting contractors make decisions on the decor at the new place..No big deal to most people including me but just in case you like a nicer internal view, I'd suggest the Old D'port.

This review is for lunch at the grill and the special sunday brunch.  I was pleasantly surprised all round with the Davenport.  It definitely has a sense of old world luxury.  I have been here a few time now for brunch/lunch.  The food was good, the prices were more reasonable than I had imagined, and everyone left happy- which doesn't typically happen in my family.  Sunday brunch buffet is more expensive but a definite treat.  It is the best I had had in Spokane- it was perfect for mother's day!

Read the reviews - this is a great place to stay.  The Davenport offers an extremely high-quality experience, rivaling a $750/night hotel I visited in Toronto, for about what you would pay for a Homewood Suites.  The tower is a modern safari theme where the main hotel is more old world in style and execution.  The service is exceptional - probably the best of any large establishment in Eastern Washington.   We enjoy drinks in the Peacock Room, although I have to admit my favorite part of that experience is watching the endless parade of people outside.  If you are considering a getway weekend, you would be hard pressed to find a better place for a couple of days.  Spokane has grown its downtown area into a great weekend spot with lots of shopping, entertainment, and a diverse event calendar.  If given an option, we almost always head to Spokane vs. Seattle for events.  The Davenport is a big part of the downtown experience and certainly a worth a look.
