If yelp had 6 stars, I'd give it to The Dance Zone. I took dance with Liz back in ..wow...let me think....2002 when I was a student at UT- she then opened The Dance Zone and I was a regular student until I moved to Los Angeles in 2007. Liz is a warm, friendly, passionate person with a love for dance that is admirable. I have always been a dancer and when I found her while living in Austin, I was ecstatic! The Dance Zone felt like a second home to me for many years. I met many of my best friends at the studio and was always surrounded by a loving group of people. You don't have to have a lot of experience to start taking at the DZ- Liz can turn even the most uncoordinated into a dancing queen in no time ! If you just want to take class for fun.....you got it! Her choreography is fun and unique and you will want to keep on dancing even after class if over!
Liz became one of my good friends over the years and I haven't found anyone quite like her in LA just yet. I may sound sappy now, but some of the BEST times of my life were at the Dance Zone. I looked forward to every day that I had class- and that's something since I definitely dig my couch, too ;) haha!
Oh and p.s....the prices are stellar, too. Okay....lemme wrap this up- Liz=awesome The Dance Zone= awesome -

The owner, Liz, is great, very personable, and an unbelievable dancer. She knows all her students by name and really cares about their improvement.
Sad to say, the UT West Campus location has closed after 8 years. They will be reopening in North Austin most likely so check out their website to see where they are.
Class prices are really reasonable and they offer Ballet Next (ballet without the strict rules and to hip hop music), jazz, cardio-fitness classes, and hip hop.
sometimes the classes start late--it's a super laid back, casual atmosphere with some instructors asking their students what they'd like to do in class that day instead of having a set class plan, so if this is what you're looking for, go for it. this place is great.
(they had Adult-focused dance classes at their UT location, but i hear they will be offering kids classes at the new studio). -

DZ has some of the most enjoyable and challenging dance classes I've taken in this area. I grew up dancing and am still around it, as I have taught kids/teens over the past several years...but taking these classes brought back that passion and excitement you can only get from performing.
I've taken street jazz and contemporary and was impressed with both of them. There were a mixture of skill levels in both classes (from beginner to expert), but the teachers do a great job at accommodating to all skill levels so that everyone walks away from it dripping in sweat.
Thanks to the owner, Liz! She's a great dance resource to get to know and she will definitely not let you walk away without being pushed to your limits! -

Let me start by saying that I am by no means a dancer. In fact, I was kicked out of ballet class at age 4 because I refused to wear the ballet slippers (I thought tennies were way cooler). I can't touch my toes. And so on.
So when my roommate suggested we sign up for a UT informal class over the summer, the last thing I expected to get into was a dance class. She said we were going to be taking "CardioJamz" which is one of the classes offered at The Dance Zone. I didn't know that was the name of the business until I got there -- otherwise I probably would have been more wary. We signed up through UT informal classes, but Liz would rather you go directly through her (she makes more of a cut). She will give you the informal class rate if you ask for it.
The class is taught by this uber-buff lady named Liz. You'll feel somewhat like a lazy slob once you engage in her 15 minute Awesome Ab workout - but you also are tempted by the thought that hey, her abs rock. So maybe mine could too (yeah, right).
After a slew of sit ups is when the dancing begins. You start by doing a lot of slow, pelvic thrusts to "My Goodies." This is especially demoralizing when a crew of UT Football campers aged 10-12 years old are staring at you through the window. I'm sure my pelvic thrusts are emblazoned into some young boy's mind.
I'm sorry, kiddo.
At any rate, I hated CardioJamz at first. I dreaded every class, mainly because I felt so terrible at dancing. But one day I realized that Liz wasn't going to yell at me because I can't pivot, and I was able to relax and enjoy myself a bit more. Liz just wants you to keep moving.
I ended up signing up for another session with the Dance Zone. And while I never got great, I did start to learn the steps and not feel completely inadequate. I also was able to touch my toes for the first time in probably twelve years.
While I'm by no means a trained hip-hop dancer, I learned some moves. And sometimes if I'm in the car and Ciara comes on, I still get that itch to shake it.
Give it a shot. For around $50 for 8 classes, what have you got to lose? Maybe an extra left foot and a pound or two.Listed in: Get Out, Get In Shape

LIZ started dancing in Santa Rosa California with Deborah Palesch and Bill Merriman. She studied Vagonova technique and trained for International Competition with her partner Julian Montanair, a soloist with the San Francisco Ballet and dancer on FAME (the original movie). She was selected to attend company classes in Moscow and Lenningrad, USSR with the Kirov and Bolshoi Ballet companies in preparation for the International Ballet Competition in 1983. She has studied under the late great Fernando Bujones, Nadia Pavlova and Vyacheslav Gordeyev, as well as the Marin Ballet and many others.
Years later she moved to LA to ....
and then opened the Dance Zone in February 2003. LIZ was Artistic Director/Choreographer for the Ice Bats dance team 2003-2004 & 2004-2005 and the Austin Toros dance team 2005-2006 LIZ hosted the KEYE-42 second workout and taught her award-winning classes at World gym for 8 1/2 years before opening the Dance Zone.
