I went in to this little gift shop/magazine place and thought it was pretty nice. I was shocked to find the low brow/pornographicish material here. They have a lot of normal magazines and periodicals here, but they also have the raunchy stuff here mixed in. I don't know, but I usually see the "adult" signs and stay away from those type of stores. Here I walked in and was disgusted to come across that type of stuff.

Yes, it's a quintessential Hollywood hipster store, but I love it. I love it because it's tidy, the staff is nice, and the offerings vary. Generally the offerings are about the same as you would find at Urban Outfitter's--but the quality is better and more cerebral:
Salvador Dali finger puppet? Check.
Zipper earrings? Check.
Coffee table books you actually want to read? Check.
(It's a great place to kill time while waiting for UCB, too.) -

I adore this shop. I can easily lose all track of time in this tiny space browsing through their books, toys, cards, and novelties. I actually bought a really cool card here and had it framed. It hangs in my bathroom and many friends have asked me about it because its so cool and different. This is the perfect place to come and get a unique card or gift. Think Valentine's Day or a just because for you! It's a news stand too, so you can get your morning paper on your way to eat at Birds :) Just a suggestion ;)

This place is right around the corner from my apartment and is a cute little magazine stand-meets novelty stationary-knick knack-bookstore. While they don't have a huge book selection at all, they do have all the periodicals one would really need and a nifty collection of literary and art quarterlies and zines. While it's not my favorite news stand in L.A, Daily Planet has some neat gift ideas, journals, calendars, and other crap to keep you occupied while waiting for a show at UCB or tying to grab a last minute something something for a birthday party. I particularly like their cards and they carry a few of the Moleskin journals, too.
3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 stars because I'm a Superman fan.Listed in: Hollywoodland, Bookworms Unite!, In the neighborhood

LOVE this bookstore/magazine stand/trinkety/cute last minute gifty store!
I've been hitting this place since the day it opened and always make it a must stop before hitting the various establishments along the Franklin/Scientology Corridor. Loaded with great books from fun and witty authors, unique and sarcastic or handmade greeting cards and full of little things that will make your $20 bills disappear, it's a great shop.
Oh and I even scored a purse here once. Did you read that! Literature AND purses!?!?!!

After eating at Birds, my pal insisted that we stop by The Daily Planet. He swore we would love it.
It's sort of a newsstand/gift shop more than a book store, and smelled just lovely of fragrent candles and soaps and things inside. Sure there were a few books, but it was mostly interesting magazines (like Modern Drunkard) and knickknacks. Some of my favorite items were the Don't Kill The Pets notepad for your house sitter and the bags and wallets made from recycled billboards. The gifts are definitely pricey (the reason why I did not walk out of there with either of those things).
And I wouldn't recommend stopping by after three drinks at Birds if you tend to get a little wobbly at that point since there are plently of breakables to be broken. -

The book selection of classic books with fancy interesting amazing covers make this place 5 stars worthy. It's a gift shop and tons of knick knacks that you want to buy! From coffee table books (Chanel, Andy Warhol) to journals to candles to scarfs to classic kids books to cupcake fans... it's a great store! It kind of reminds me of Handmade http://www.yelp.com/bi... from Sherman Oaks, but it's smaller and have wonderful books. I seriously wanted to buy like 4 books there...

La Verne, CA
I have spent literally hours in this store. The mags at the front catch your attention at first. But as you slowly move toward the back there is always a book or display that grabs you. A night that I had resigned myself to multiple cups of coffee at the Bourgeois Pig I noticed that something was going on in the Daily Planet. They were serving drinks at the back. shweetness.
Parking sucks so expect to circle for quite a while and I wouldn't be surprised if you have to park blocks away. -

i love this place. honestly, it's my first stop for every birthday/random holiday/anniversary/graduation/yada yada. they just have the perfect mix of gag gifts, candles, jewelry, books and assorted crap. basically i've started buying care packages for peoples birthday and no one has been let down yet. i stuff them with random hilarious mad-libs and funny customize stickies (that usually pertain to some inside joke), some incense or a candle ... i mean, the possibilities are endless. and then they have a great card selection. plusss don't even get me started on newsstand, which is absolutely superb.
i guess though, ive just been let down a few times. i mean, maybe i frequent the place a little too often (about once a month for a gift) but it's not restocked so i come in and it's the same stuff from before. so i got the stuff for the last birthday i wanted ... and now is just the stuff i don't think's that great (aka the magnet of the donkey with the lips on it that is supposed to insinuate to 'kiss my ass' or the frog made out of soap or some of their various literature collecting dust). i guess i just wish it was a little *more* perfect. i'm still waiting for the perfect gift shop, which is basically what i've made the daily planet into. -

North Hollywood, CA
This is one of my favorite shops in Hollywood, as it has a great selection of books, unique gift items, and magazines. I often visit when I need a fun present for a baby or wedding shower and I don't want to stick to the often boring and expensive registry. You can find many items for dog or cat lovers, vintage t-shirts, jewelry, bags, adult novelties, journals and notebooks, off-the-wall greeting cards, and much more. For a small store, there is a real variety of merchandise. The only negative is the parking situation. Prepare to drive around the block several times, to get a spot on the street, or take your chance and park in a nearby lot for other businesses. Of course I don't condone the latter, but can honestly say I've done it myself before.

Great bookstore/giftshop. I remember coming into this place the first time when I was about 15 to check out their selection. I didn't find what I was looking for, but the person that was working at the time told me that they can order you a the specific title which is pretty cool. They have a nice selection of fiction/non-fiction stuff, as little knick-knacks and toys adorn the shelves next to them, knowing that these are things that you wouldn't be able to find just anywhere. You can find almost every magazine in publication at this place. The reason why I return, they carry Moleskines. So every time i'm in need of a new one, I'll gladly go by and look through the store before making my final purchase.

3.5 stars. This had a cute little atmosphere, but I wonder if they lose a lot of business because Counterpoint is right there. This store is super cute, but it is a bit pricey, and with Counterpoint books two stores away, I'd probably get my books there. But it had cute accessories.

Cute little book and gift store on the corner near Bourgeois Pig...Open late and full of little sentiments to give to friends and yourself. On the Road by Kerouac, vegan birthday cards, journals, candles, etc. It's perfect if you need an impromptu birthday gift or card and are in the area.

I want to move into this store, just hole up in a little nook in the back by the cards. Sure, I acknowledge it's overpriced, but what do you expect? It preys on people waiting for dinner reservations, the valet to get their car, the UCB show to start etc. etc. It's not like there's another place around for you to pick up La Monde, a sassy birthday card, some pop rocks and maybe a copy of The Giving Tree while you're at it. Oh and maybe a tshirt and this candle smells great... I don't know who choses the inventory of this store, but I think we would be great friends. Perfect for buying eclectic and unexpected gifts and a great place to kill time (aaaand, it must be noted, burn a hole in your wallet) if you're in the neighborhood.

Really good place to pick up gifts... even though I always find about 10 things I'd really like to buy myself.

Everytime I need a gift I go here. The gifts are original, lovely, interesting and good quality. Also the magazine rack here rules! It has magazines from all around the world. The art magazine selection is thourough. Plus the books are provocative and also lots of classics. Killer vibe! Sales people are cool and helpful.

Kaneohe, HI
It's called a bookstore but there's really very few books inside. The ones that are there run along the lines of trashy paperback novels. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but trashy paperback novels and subscriptions of poorly circulated magazines does not a bookstore make. But what makes this bookstore actually fun is the selection of somewhat racist t-shirts (the rub my belly bhudda T comes to mind), high end candles (Votivo- that costs way more than a candle ever should), morbid valentine cards (if you want to tell someone you love them so much you want to cut of his/her head and keep it in a jar by your bed so you can look at them all the time) and first-aid items (sushi band aids). This is a perfect place to buy a little "thinking of you" gift for anyone. Nothing is really of high quality but it's the kind of silly stuff you want but think it's ridiculous to buy for yourself (miso horny lotion) but greatly appreciate as a gift (verbena perfume).

Since a change in ownership the Daily Planet has managed to keep it's charm while getting even better. It still has a ton of fun gifts, trinkets and candles but now you can also get large art books, designer t-shirts and other high end items. Plus they continue to have a huge variety Moleskins which you can always count on. The book selection may be small but it's full of treasures and you can see there is great care taken to pick interesting editions of their books. I've been known to go in there and buy books that I already have because their copy of Animal Farm has a cover done by Shepard Fairey or has been printed in some other incredible limited edition, hardcover, famous artist design. When it comes to magazines, in addition to the New York Times, Us Weekly and the other usual stuff, you can also find Vogue from Japan, Italian newspapers, French gossip magazines, Adbusters, Believer, Modern Drunkard Monthly and every music magazine you've ever heard of and a ton that you haven't. They have a whole back wall covered in cards, a children's section, and they giftwrap. I have been buying my gifts there since I was 15 years old and it's never disappointed me. There is always great music playing, the employees treat you like friends not customers and there is a coffee shop next door so you don't have to wait to get home to dive into your new book or magazine. I suggest you don't come in to this store with a list but instead browse the shelves, there will be plenty of unique items that will catch your eye. You'll never find any place quite like this one.
