32 reviews for The Cut Salon
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I'm pretty picky about who I let cut my hair (let alone highlight it) but I've had nothing but great experiences at The Cut. Alyssa's been doing my hair for two years now and I'd highly recommend her. I've also sent friends to her and they are now repeat customers.
I've been going to The Cut for years now and I have had nothing but great experiences. Alyssa has always listened to what I wanted to get out of the cut when I've wanted something specific. But she is also creative enough to figure out a cute haircut for you during those times when you're not really sure what you want to do with your hair but YOU KNOW YOU NEED a hair cut. I think that is the best of both worlds. Alyssa is also great at guiding you to not make totally foolish hair choices while also respecting your deluded ideas of what might look good on you. Basically, the girl knows how to gently tell you that look might not work for your face shape, etc and still get you a cut that is in the same vein as what you were looking for. The girl's a mind reader!
Anyways, prices are reasonable (considering LA salons can charge an arm & leg). I think your first cut is discounted. Alyssa is fantastic. The reception desk person is usually pretty friendly and sweet (although I notice they have high turnover at that spot). They call to remind you about your appointments so that you don't get dinged with the charge if you were on the path to forgetting you had an appointment. The other staff generally seem to be equally easy-going and friendly as Alyssa. The place is not drenched in the typical attitude and pretentious vibe that lots of hair salons easily have. Parking can be tough sometimes, but try the lot behind the building first.
I had been whoring around LA salons for about 3 years. My rewards where a lot of wasted money and a "Can't find a Stylist STD"!
Then I made my way into The Cut. The moment I walked in I liked it. The atmosphere is welcoming (as welcoming LA gets). Yes, the salon in Santa Monica, so the attitude is different; so are the staff at The Cut: Friendly, courteous and very cool.
I schedule to meet with the Top Lady, Alyssa. My experience with head stylist in the past has been mixed and always intimidating. Alyssa is not like that. She listens and recommends! She's told me if my style ideas are good or bad (mostly bad), and does a good explaining why her recommendations work.
Boys looking for a cheap cut, this isn't your place. But if you're looking to spend a nice amount for a great full service salon, I recommend The Cut. Prices start at $30 for boys - DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE TIP!
The process is just like a full service salon: consultation, wash, cut, wash, style.
My current style make me feel very haute couture. Not really, I don't even know how to pronounce that word! But Really, I've received many compliments on my style.
I you want to stop being a salon whore and settle down, visit The Cut. You might settle down and like it as much as I have!

I've been seeing Alyssa at The Cut for two and a half years now and she is a star. I've recommended several people to her and have had them, all coming back and thanking me later. She *gets it.* I barely have to say two words to her and she magically gives me the exact cut and color I want. I always walk out looking and feeling better than I did when I came in. I have superthick wavy hair and she makes it completely manageable on a day-to-day basis. I never face the "Okay, now that I have to do my hair myself, I can't make it look as good as she did" problem.
This place is usually pretty busy, but I've never had much trouble getting a convenient appointment time. She'll also squeeze me in for a bang trim if I need one, which is rare. Sometimes the color can take a some time, but that's a price I'm willing to pay. Speaking of, it's relatively inexpensive. Reminder: You wear your hair every day; it wouldn't hurt to have something nice going on on your head.
My boyfriend and I were looking for a new place to get our hair cut after moving to the area. We went in together for haircuts one time. I thought my stylist was nice, but I wasn't crazy about the cut (it wasn't bad at all, but I didn't leave feeling like I looked amazing) or the salon itself. I would also agree with another reviewer that it didn't really feel as much like being pampered as I would have liked.
My boyfriend, on the other hand, had a pleasant enough experience the first time with his stylist (don't remember her name) so he went back again. He got Alyssa the second time and she gave him a new look (after so many years with the old one, it was fantastic she got him to agree!) and he looked fantastic. He continues to go to her regularly to maintain his hair.
She's nice to him and generally does a really good job (although a couple times, I've noticed she's rushed a bit and misses a couple little things). Besides that happening occasionally, my only complaint is that when I've gone with him sometimes, I've felt she was a little rude to me (which isn't really a good business decision). I realize she's not my stylist, but how does she know I'm not a potential client? It may have just been an off day, but it rubbed me the wrong way.
Still, she's a very good stylist and created a new look for him (which was something he didn't even realize he wanted or needed, but did!) and I think she deserves a lot of credit for that. I think the only real negative here is that the customer service could use a little work.
One additional thing that may be useful for people who want to come here, but haven't been before, is there's a small parking lot in the back which has consistently had open spaces for The Cut customers when we've come. Doesn't matter for those of you close enough to walk, but if you're driving from somewhere else, it's nice to not be worried about where you can park or if you have coins for meters, etc.
This place is a solid, decent salon. But just in the interest of full disclosure, because I know I would have loved to have known this before I went:
1. They are very cheap (for LA) at around $45 for a basic cut. But you're not going to get a lot of style for that amount (did you expect to at $45? on Pico Blvd?) but their cuts are technically good. So if you're looking to keep up your current style at an affordable price, this is your place, for sure.
2. They don't take their time and will rush through the cut if they haven't budgeted enough time and you'll be encouraged to leave without having your hair blown dry to get to the waiting clients. Which I don't really (normally) mind - but a lot of people might. Especially since I arrived early and was made to wait 30 minutes... And WAS A NEW CLIENT. Not a really good impression.
Overall, this place is pretty good. But I don't know that I will go back, personally. Getting my hair cut usually feels like pampering, but this didn't.
For a recent role, my medium-length hair needed to be cut to look like Charlize Theron's hair in Aeon Flux.
All I had to do was discuss it with Jeanne for a few minutes and she knew exactly what needed to be accomplished.
It took her a good 2.5 hours, which is to be expected when doing a precision cut like mine as well as the all-over onyx shade, which she needed to dye my hair.
All that time was well-worth it when I saw the final result! Amazing!
I received plenty of comments on it in the past five days and I don't regret going this short either. Sometimes, when hair is transformed for a film, you worry that during the length of the shooting (in this case, 3 months), you will have to walk around with a funky do. In this case, I feel super modern and very glamorous. I can totally work this cut anytime anywhere.
THANK YOU JEANNE!!! I LOVE YOU!

Hair today, gone tomorrow!!!
But at least here you know the hair you do lose is for a good cause because you will look amazing afterwards!! I got 3.5 inches cut off today and I cannot even begin to describe to you how many people I asked before I went to the salon "should i cut my hair?? should i??? should i??" I probably sounded like a broken record to many today, but I am so glad that went through with it!! My stylist was awesome and did exactly what I wanted with my length and my layers and for a place with this much talent and skill $45 for a women's haircut in LA is a steal!!! And I look hot now just in time for my boyfriend who is flying in to visit tonight!! 2 more hours to go until he's here! And I know he'll love my hair too!
So The Cut makes the cut for me and I will definitely be going back!!
As a long time client of Sarah's, and a big fan of Ashley's I felt compelled to write and counterbalance the negative review that recently appear on this site. The staff has always been outstanding at making me feel welcomed, acknowledging my concerns and doing a fantastic job on my hair. Although I am sympathetic to the complaints of Afsaneh B., I think that maybe it was a combination of the wait and having a bad day that made her write such a thrashing review.

I recently got cut/color done by Stacey, and it came out great! She really listened to what I wanted and I was so happy with the results. Probably one of the best cuts I've ever had. And the color...beautiful! I'll definitely be back.
i will only get my hair cut hear! Alyssa and jeannie are great! I take my kids here and its a great salon with good people and it has a really great price!
I am extremely picky about who touches my hair, and honestly, I went in there twice, with a picture of what I wanted, and both times, my hair didn't come out right!
The first time, it was longer on one side than the other, (I fixed it myself..sheesh!) and instead of giving me a layered, shoulder-length razored look, it was cut above my shoulders, and uneven(Ugh).
The 2nd time? Not cut right either. I was trying to grow out my bangs and she layered them too, which messed the whole look up.
I suggest Ohm on Abbot Kinney...they do a much superior job, well worth the higher rate, they know their s*it. :)
I've only ever had bad experiences with haircuts and salons, so I was blown away when I read some of the shining reviews for this salon on another site (which shall not be named). I immediately booked an appointment. Much to my surprise something "happened" and my appointment was overlooked. Annoyance factor ONE. I waited for a *VERY* long time- lets say more than an hour and a half before I was squeezed in- Annoyance factor number TWO. The stylist was nice, but I felt like she really tried to rush through my appointment AND was tending to ANOTHER client at the same time!!!! Annoyance factor number THREE.
I understand things happen, but I would rather she had not rushed through everything- I left with wet hair! She offered me a small discount, but I think anyone who is a new customer can get the same discount. I may or may not go back, depending on how desperate I (read: my hair) gets.
When the two best stylists at a place both leave, there's probably a good reason for it. And to make things worse, when my stylist left The Cut for a new salon, they basically stalked me. They called me repeatedly but never left a message. When I finally picked up, the woman on the other end basically tried to bribe me to come back instead of following my stylist to her new place. And of course, this didn't just happen to me -- they called so many people that my stylist had to send a mass email apologizing for their actions.
Before that experience, I would have continued to recommend The Cut to friends, even after I stopped going there. It was cheap, had some great stylists, and was conveniently down the street from The Counter. But now I'm forced to tell everyone to STAY AWAY. This place is shady.
I moved to LA about a year ago. And as any sane person will tell you, one of the first questions to pop in a recent transplant's mind is, "Yikes! Where am I supposed to get my haircut now?!" Every major city has danger lurking in seemingly "stylish" salons that end up leaving you looking like an extra in Edward Scissor Hands.
But not so with The Cut Salon! After a few failed attempts at other local salons, I followed my fellow Yelpers' advice and tried out The Cut Salon. As fortune would have it, I made an appointment with Sarah....and it's been true haircut love ever since! I always know that no matter what I need/want done I can rest assured that I'll leave The Cut looking sharp and sexified.
All of the staff at the salon are super friendly, and the receptionist (aside from being a sweetie pie) is always helpful in scheduling a really convenient appointment. Plus, the prices are among the most reasonable in the area. Though I was sad when they did away with the student discount (it was only a slight one, but any bit helps!). I've also heard from reputable sources that Jean is also pretty fun and fantastic.
After looking for a haircut in Santa Monica I found this one right here on Yelp.
So I booked an appointment for that day, showed up on time, met Jeanie and got my hair cut.
Quick, easy and I saved $5 for being a first time customer. Perfect for a no frills no hassle dude like me.
I'll be back in a month or so ( more like 'or so').
Plus they had a cool little book filled with bad hairstyles from the past.
I have spent the past 7 years hopping from one stylist to another because either the price or the style wasn't right. These experiences, combined with hormonal hair loss, kept me from experimenting. I'd even gotten so gun shy that I just let my hair grow and grow, only allowing a trim. Suitably fed up, I was determined to get a new stylist a new look. Having just relocated to LA, I relied on yelp to steer me in the right direction.
After reading the reviews, I made an appointment with Sarah at The Cut. I made an appointment for a consultation before the cut, which I would highly recommend. (I'm not sure why everyone doesn't get a consultation, but anyway). Sarah listened to me and also added her perspective. She's super lad back and friendly.
The result was amazing. I love my cut. Total charge was $45 without tip. I was in and out in an hour. I am definitely going back!
I have been getting my haircut and colored by Alyssa since The Cut opened. I just tell her what length I want it and she does the rest. I always get compliments on my haircut. Thanks Alyssa! Wonderful place :)
My wife and I both got our hair cut there. Going into a place cold turkey is kind of a scary ordeal if you are finnicky about your hair... but the Cut Salon attempts to take some of that sting away by giving you a first timers $5 discount. Not too shabby.
We were both pleased with the service, and our cuts. To me, the price was a little steep and my wife was a little disconcerted with the fact that she was charged for a style when she didn't request one, but other than that it was great. The service is good, clean/cute decor, and you'll get a nice haircut.
When I initially moved to LA, I went to the highest rated salon on Citysearch, a place in Beverly Hills that cost me around $350. I liked (not loved) the haircut, but $350??? Way too expensive...
3 months later.... I started reviewing salons again and found The Cut, making an appointment with Roberta. The morning of my hair cut, my alarm died and I completely missed my appointment. I called and apologized and was asked if I would like a later appointment with Alyssa. While all the raves were about Roberta and I hadn't heard of Alyssa, I relunctantly agreed.
Flash forward 2.5 years...
My initial appointment with Alyssa took my hair to another level (what it should of looked like when I paid 350!!) Ever since, Alyssa has yet to disappoint. She a goddess when it comes to good cuts and colors. While Alyssa always busy, I have never had a problem getting an appointment. She knows her client's styles and she knows what looks good. If you are looking for a good cut with decent prices, check out Alyssa at the Cut!
So after blowing my savings each month on partial hi-lite, cut and blowdry I gave it up. $165 is just too much to spend once a month on my hair.
I recently found Stacey who's a firecracker and a great stylist! I have only gone to her for cuts but she's got a great personality and understands what "1/2" -1" taken off, with layering all around and framing the face" means. When I start feiding for the blonde back in my life I won't hesitate to let Stacey handle my hi-lites.
I leave happy because she does a great job, doesn't charge to blowdry my hair (ahem! $45 for a blowdry is freaking crazy), and the cashier doesn't automatically add a 20% tip (which has happened before at another salon). I pay $50 for a cut and leave a $10 tip.
They're 2 blocks away from my place so it really doesn't get better than this. Well unless they decide to hire male strippers to entertain us while we get our hair cut!
I was pretty happy with Roberta's work. Although, if you're looking for her, she has left town to Atlanta for good.
Overall, the service was good. Price was great - i have long hair and LOTS of it, so she charged me $40.00. The cut was great, although if you are looking for something edgy, you will need to communicate that to the stylist.
I may try other stylists here. I liked the vibe of the place. Pretty homey - not snooty.
I've been going The Cut for several years now (every time I am in Socal) and I highly recommend Kyung. I have thick asian hair so I try to use stylists who know how to handle coarse unmanageable asian hair and Kyung definitely knows how to do it. I always leave the salon satisfied!
In addition, prices are really cheap, starting at 45 without tip and parking is really easy! There are spaces in the back and usually a lot of street parking.
I am very very VERY picky about who touches my hair - one horrendous experience at Super Cuts forever changed my life...I still shudder at the memory. I has taken me years to find someone that I would allow to cut my hair. I suddenly discovered The Cut in Santa Monica. Alyssa, my stylist, was absolutely amazing. She really listened to what I had to say and what I wanted from my hair cut and did just that. She offered suggestions and improvements and even after she dried my hair offered suggestions for a new style next time. She gave me styling and care tips and was overall just phenomenal. Most of my friends pay about $90 for a cut and wash, which I think it's absolutely absurd. The Cut runs me about $30 ($40 with tip) and only takes about 30 minutes. This place is definitely worth checking out.
The Cut is my new salon of choice. They got me in on short notice, and Alyssa stayed late to finish my cut and highlights. She is extremely nice, talented, and attentive to her clients' wants.
I won't be going anywhere else for my locks.
**EDIT**
After my second visit to The Cut, I was loath to write a bad Yelp. But the more I've thought about how that second visit turned out, the more I decided I wanted to. My first visit to The Cut great, I was taken in after hours and came out with great colors and a great blow out. For my second visit, I thought I would make my apppointment at a more "traditional" time: Saturday afternoon. Big mistake. Even though I had a set appointment, I still had to wait about 45 minutes while my stylized "squeezed in" someone else. To "save time," I had to help brush out my own hair. This might sound trivial, but when I am paying for a service, I expect the full service. Then, while my highlights were drying, my stylist squeezed in ANOTHER client, and I had to wait for them to finish. After that, my highlights were still darker than requested (we had discussed working steadily towards a light blond versus the current dark honey). After all of that, there was not enough time (supposedly) to blow out my hair. Results? I walked out with wet hair, too-dark highlights, and a bad taste in my mouth. As such, I have downgraded my ONCE FIVE STAR REVIEW to a two.
Comfortable, friendly, stress-free neighborhood place. Always a good cut (thanks, Sarah!).
Been here once a long time ago and it was bad enough to remember. I found the salon as well as the stylist very unprofessional. The stylist didnt seem to have any technique and my cut was rather sloppy. I was tempted to go to another salon right afterwards to fix my cut. Everything from the atmosphere, friendliness of the staff, skill level of the service seemed poor. If you're picky with your hair, don't go here.
Overrated. I went to the salon and I was not that impressed. I had Alyssa and she was very cute and nice. But she kind of screwed up my highlights and said that I could go back since she screwed up. Not to be rude but if I am going to pay $160 I want it to be right the first time. The Salon was not that great and the talent was nothing to go raving home about. I really wanted to like the salon more but now my hair is not growing out nicely . I would not say never to go here but this is not one of those salons where they create miracles or anything.
Finally, a place for a guy to go and get a decently priced, yet stylish cut. The days of Supercuts are over for me! No more cutting straight across.. I'm extremely satisfied with my cut 3 weeks later and am looking forward (for once) to go back and get my hair cut.. thank you yelp!
I have been going to The Cut Salon since 2006 and I love it. The stylists are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and are available on weekends too. I love Sarah in particular, she does the best highlights, better than anyone else in LA I tried before I discovered The Cut!! Everyone compliments my hair and they don't even notice I'm not a natural blonde. The salon has great price/quality, check it out!
I went to the cut about a year ago and I got one of the worst cuts of my life! I went to Roberta because my friend had gone to her and her hair was cute, but I would never go again. I told her I wanted a simple but elegant vidal-sassoon type bob and she cut my hair the right length, but it was not styled whatsoever! I had to go back to Orange County to get my hair fixed by my old hairdresser and he asked me, "who cut your hair in a straight line?" I wouldn't recommend it.
i love, love, love the cut salon! like kimi p., i am also very cautious about who i let near my "precious hair" and finding a salon i liked in LA proved to be a real challenge... every place seemed to want to give me the same boring haircut which usually involved taking off way too much length then trying to talk me into coloring my hair - since, i guess this is something EVERYONE in LA does... crazy! so, i found the cut through my boyfriend, randomly, and when i looked them up on citysearch (i know, BAD!) i found that they have one of the finest ratings in LA... everyone raved about roberta and how she's so great with long hair and curly hair - both of which i have - so i decided to give her a try... i was so impressed! the salon is nice and completely unpretentious - which is so hard to find at good places in LA - and roberta is awesome! she has given me a couple of my favorite haircuts now and her personality is great so she's fun to chat with while she works as well :)
