I first heard of this place in a New York News paper listing all New York City Restaurants with fireplaces. I rubbed my two hands together and said Yay awesome. I made reservations and they were great about setting up a beautiful table for a large party.
The menu was great. we chose the restaurant's signature burger. My friend who is a vegetarian chose a dinner she loved so much she facebooked her picture (she is very picky). Our waitress was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about wines. They also had a happy hour bar on the other side that was packed but not overwhelming. The Bar was far away from the tables, far away enough to hear the conversations going on at our table.
Nice place and yes there was a fire place but too warm to fire it up (was a beautiful autumn day) -
Review from Lena L.
I haven't been this disappointed in a restaurant in a very long time. Walking in I had high hopes as well given the atmosphere is very comforting on the below freezing day we walked in.
I ordered the eggs florentine. When it arrived and I bit into one of the home fried potatoes, I could have sworn it was an ice cube instead. The eggs were cold as well. When the next plate came out it was obviously plenty hot, but they had clearly put it under some hot light or something as the hollandaise sauce had congealed into what very accurately resembled my dog's occasional throw up. It tasted OK but seriously lacked flavor as well.
You can serve me shit on a plate and still not come out with one star, really you can, if you make up for it with good service. In this case, the table runner couldn't have been more rude. Dirty looks when my friend asked for jelly with her toast, the same bad attitude when I asked for ketchup to accompany the home fries. Our waitress also seemed barely phased and really made no effort to apologize for my frozen entree. Even though the place was relatively empty, no one filled water glasses or bothered to notice my tea was empty and ask me if I'd like another.
Piss poor. Not worth my time or my dime. -

Came here for lunch with Co-Workers today, I was overall not impressed with either the food or the service.
I was a bit off-put at the lunch specials as the didn't seem to be "special" at all either for price or uniqueness. I ordered the chili over rice off the menu and waited around ~20 minutes for food. I could understand 15 minutes of waiting, especially with beer being poured (although the price is a rip-off and selection isn't great).
The food I received wasn't even a snack portion, there simply wasn't enough food and I'm actually hungry right now, 2 hours later; its really disappointing when you spend $14 for chili and there is hardly any of it. On top of that, the chili wasn't even that good and it was burnt. At some point over the course of the meal, our waitress possibly changed and we ended up waiting another 20 minutes for our plates to clear and to get the check. For lunch, this place is terrible and overpriced, with superior selections easily a block away (RIP Meli Melo...) -

Recommended by the concierge at Hotel Chandler ... the ambiance is ok, a bit loud with weirdly formal tables (white tableclothes & candles) for a pub. The wine selection was pretty mediocre (ok, it's a pub), but the chicken pot pie was almost taste-free. All in all, I wouldn't come back.

I've only been to the place at night for drinks so I can't speak about anything that happens during the day. The place is great, the bartenders Chris and Paul are very friendly and it doesn't hurt that they are easy on the eyes.

Nothing wrong with the place but nothing that stands out about it either. They have an interesting take on what fried pickles are...they literally took a pickle slice and fried it. Not so hot. And then served it with basically straight tomato paste. These people need to visit down south where fried pickles are done right, by god. Happy hour is standard beer, wine, or cocktail $5 or less.

This place rocks. I love it. Had the guiness mussels. Unreal!!! This has an incredible ambiance and always recommend it to people that are visiting. Love it. The bartenders are very cool and helpful. DON't MISS THIS IF YOU ARE VISITING. Very cool space

went for dinner on a saturday evening. quiet, old school interior design (tin ceiling & antique pine furniture), polite server, craft beers, large salads, and.... amazing burger.

based on a number of reviews below it seems that the service at the Crooked Knife can take a fork in the road. It can cut both ways y'know. for some it' cuts with precision while for others it's a dull blade.
had lunch today and I am happy to report that our service and, more importantly, our meal was excellent. drinks and menus were brought right away and food appeared on time and hot. from sit down to check took about 50 minutes for two courses - nothing wrong with that.
the farfalle with grilled chicken, sun dried tomatoes, shaved Parmesan, mushrooms and pesto was really special - and for $14, basically a steal. everything was courteous and well executed.
this is a very solid lunch option in the lower 30s. -

Awful service. Straight up awful.
It took them 5 min just to get us menus. Another 5 min to order coffee. About 10 min to get the mediocre coffee. Nevermind the lemon wedges I asked for with my water, I didn't get them until I flagged the girl over AFTER my meal was done.
The eggs benedict were overcooked- pretty much like eating hard-boiled eggs over bacon with some gross-looking yellowish slime that's supposed to be hollandaise sauce.
I gave this place 2 stars only because the Irish breakfast I ordered was actually pretty tasty. Not that the waitress would know because she didn't come over once while we ate. She walked by us several times, noticed that our water glasses and coffee cups were empty, and just kept on walking. I hope she enjoyed the crappy tip we gave her. -

Fun atmosphere and great bartenders! The service was fast and friendly, and the drinks were strong. The crowd was pretty diverse, which I like - not too uptight, but not too casual.
The gazpacho alone was reason enough to come back! -

Ever go to a restaurant and say "oh my god, I have no idea what to order." Now is that because there were so many options.... or because you literally had no idea what to order?
So I came here during lunch with my coworkers, I think on a Friday. Average, run of the mill menu, with no real exciting options. They had your standard burger or salads, but nothing really jumped out at me. I was sad, really, because the name of the place sounded cooler than their menu.
I got the half sandwich and soup or whatever it was... lentil and a BLT. The soup was good. The sandwich was eh. It was ok but it wasn't great... kinda like my review. Boring. -

Ordered the steak salad - too fatty. Friend had the sole, no flavor which indicated it was fresh out the freezer. Bread was stale...but the butter tasted good. Better off going to bread and butter deli....get much better food and save money (notice i didnt say get more for ur money). The only plus point was the pub like set up, but since there weren't a lot of people around when i went, I can't say it had the same atmosphere.

This revirew is based soley on a place to drink - We arrived at about... 1ish am...
Cute little spot, but nothing out of the ordinary. Standard beers and cocktails. I wouldn't say it was a bad experience, and I could definitely be talked into going again, just not somewhere I'd consider a destination, or somewhere that would come to the list for me. -

Great evening at The Knife tonight. The crowd is very diverse. Chris is behind the bar making awsome drinks, it is martini Mondays. There is always a fun atmosphere at the bar when Chris is here. The comfort food is great, try the Shepherds pie or the burger.

Solid 4 Stars.
Wandered over here for lunch on a Friday.
Not crowded, so I took a seat at one of those Overstuffed, cushiony, leather bar stools that can that just makes you feel comfortable, in a "Cheers" sort of way.
My bartender Lou, was so pleasant and nice to chat to, that I felt like a "regular" from the second I sat down.
The half vegetable paninni and ample bowl of mushroom soup, for $11 was all I need on this unusually warm and sunny afternoon.
Surprising side of a full granny smith apple as a garnish, was a welcome treat for my pocket back to my office.
Again, many times these local spots are regional, and it might be more convenient to get to know a place if you can hit it multiple times.
This place would take on an entirely different aura with an after-work crowd. Jazz here sounds like it would be a good fit. I'll be back. -

Well in the sea of amazing gastropubs and restaurants, bars and cafes in New York, this is the epitome of mediocrity. I'm sorry, I hate writing negative reviews, but the prices were so high here and the food not nearly good enough to warrant it. But if you really want to try this place or if it's convenient for you there are a few things that are good:
The chicken pot pie is damn good. It has the most delicious and flaky crust that ever walked the earth, if crust had feet and walked. The gravy is also pleasantly light. It has great rich flavor but it doesn't cover everything in a viscous muck that most pot pies feature. It was a wonderful dish overall
The calamari appetizer was also good with big chunks of squid, crispy batter, not too oily, and a really great lemony aioli sauce.
Those were the best things I tried, but the lamb stew and tuna cranberry wrap were also good. Try to stay away from the fish and chips and reuben sandwich because they are just blah and cost way too much. -

We had a great time at The Crooked Knife having late night drinks on Fri and Sat brunch all in one day.
music there is catchy and easy to sing along with all the drunk new friends there. the late night crowd was young and fun but the place wasn't so crowded... or we just got lucky. We danced with a few of them. no B52s which was a bummer.
brunch food was also good, we both had egg benedict and it was delicious with lots of home fries. that's all I remember with my head spinning after a big but great night out :) -

I had the pleasure of visiting New York this past January.
I picked up one day and decided I needed to get out of California and New York was the first place that came to mind.
I stayed at Hotel 30 30, which is just across the street from this little restaurant.
Seeing as how there was a snowstorm the night before I thought it best that I shouldn't venture too far from my hotel in case it got worse.
So i bundled up and walked across the street in search of dinner.
As soon as I walked in the bartender and the hostess greeted me with a smile, and I was sat immediately and even allowed to choose my own table. I chose the bench next to the window so I could look out at the snow-covered city.
My waitress showed up with bread and water and politely told me I could take my time.
I ordered a glass of wine, which was very moderately priced and a bowl of their Tortilla Soup.
It being a Friday night, it was pretty busy (mostly the bar area), but it wasn't too loud, which is a plus when you're exhausted and just want to have a nice dinner.
My food arrived within 15 minutes of ordering and the wait staff occasionally checked in with me or came by to refill my wine and water glasses. After dinner the waitress came over and handed me the dessert menu and even suggested her favorite, the Snicker's Cheesecake.
Now I love cheesecake, I frequent the Cheesecake Factory just for that particular reason so i figured that i'm in NYC so let's try some of their cheesecake!
It was to die for!!!!
Drizzled with chocolate and carmel sauce and had a chocolate cookie crust! Yumm!!
I felt guilty for leaving half of it but I couldn't eat another bite.
My plates were cleared away and she brought my check along with another glass of wine, which she didn't charge me for! :)
I left their happy and full! -

Pro: The wine is on the cheap side.
Con: The food is on the expensive side.
Pro: It's one of the only games in town in that neighborhood... if you want to sit down and have some wine with someone and don't want to wait or to go somewhere pretentious and fancy, Crooked Knife will do.
Con: The food is really not much to write home about, though it's not bad.
Pro: Attentive, fun waitstaff. Each of the two times I've been there I've had a fantastic waitress who didn't mind letting us linger.
In conclusion: I'm glad to trade excellent food for just "okay-ish" food if I don't have to wait and the wine is cheap! -

Stumbled here because our wait at Les Halles was not going to be 15 minutes like the hostess said...bf like the name of this restaurant and thus we ended up at The Crooked Knife.
The good: location, ambiance (very comfy), service-amazing!
The okay: Barely a crowd for a Saturday at 8, food was mediocre for the price
A good restaurant is not all about the food...it's all the elements....location, atmosphere, service.
If this place could work on their food a bit I think it has great potential. I got the chicken pot-pie...was good but a little bland and for the price it was a smaller portion.
Loved the atmosphere and the service was incredible!! :) -

Looks great from the outside and the inside decor makes you want to stay all night. Only two problems...the beer selection is terrible and the food is mediocre at best. The burger was recommended by the staff (rarely a good sign) and the bun was like cardboard.
This place seems to be going through an identity crisis. Half Irish pub, one quarter brasserie, one quarter TGIF. Very reasonable prices.
For a quick cheap beer after work, though, it's just about right. -

This place is SUPER cute! I came here for the Angelight Films Happy Hour (Angelight gives children with brain and spinal chord tumors the opportunity to make their own short films) and had a fantastic time. The bar area is pretty cozy and the appetizers were delish. The dining area was decorated as if you were in someone's very large kitchen - complete with a hutch filled with various plates and nick knacks. I kind of felt like I was eating at Anthropologie or Pottery Barn.

Popped in for an early dinner before heading to the airport. The place was pretty empty at the early hour except for a couple at the bar and some single tables.
Limited menu with apps, salads, and entrees. Decent wine list. The Shepard's Pie was extremely hot (as in temperature). Mainly beef and potatoes on top, not much veggies or other filling. The gnocchi was in a cream sauce and tasty.
Two entrees and 2 iced teas (which were brewed tea) was $40.
There are special boards during the week. This night was going to be 2 Apps, 2 Entrees, and a bottle of wine for $40. -

The beer selection leaves a lot to be desired, and the food should just be skipped. How a restaurant messes up grilled shrimp skewers with lemon, and a caprese salad (which doesn't require ANY cooking) is beyond me. The far greater question is why people frequent this place.
I have heard good reviews of the other location on 14th. That's probably worth another shot. -

Well, I know I don't have to tell you, but it's colder than a witch's teat* out there.
So I was checking out places for lunch in the Madison Square Park area, and I noticed that the Crooked Knife has fireplaces. Suffice to say, Beavis and I feel the same way about fire.
We stepped inside, and they sat us right next to the fireplace. And what do you want when it's freezing?
http://kr.youtube.com/...
(Don't ask me why it's set to Korean YouTube. I don't know.)
Anyway, the chicken pot pie was EXACTLY what I needed. Flaky crust, hot tasty filling...that I burned my tongue on repeatedly. But I just couldn't stop eating it. My friends appeared to feel the same way about their beef stew and shepherd's pie as well.
Other things I like about the Crooked Knife:
-The name. I think there's got to be a good story behind it.
-When I told the waitress I drink a lot of water, she substituted my tiny water glass with a pint glass; very nice. Easier for both of us.
-On the bathroom sign that says "Employees Must Wash Their Hands," it adds in, "...Really Everybody." Because everybody should wash their hands.
Especially you. I saw that. You disgust me.

"I can't feel my balls!"
"what?"
"I said, it's so frigging cold I can't feel my balls"
"oh yeah, I can't feel my balls neither!"
This was a shouted exchanged I passed on 3rd Street last night between to bouncers trying to communicate their mutual discomfort from opposite sides of the street. While I don't have any balls, I'd agree that if I did it's so cold out that I probably wouldn't be able to feel them.
While balls and crooked knife shouldn't be used in the same sentence typically, it was a perfect match for lunch today. What more could you want than a seat near a fireplace, hot Sheppard's pie and cozy grandma's house decor? It really hit the spot and since this cute pub-like oasis is only a few blocks from my office, I might actually get there without freezing my...ears...off. -

I don't know if I could've made it through my first winter in New York without the Crooked Knife.
When the weather outside was frightful we'd come to The Crooked Knife for lunch. We'd snag a table by the fireplace and order shepherd's pie, lamb stew or chicken pot pie.

Live Jazz band every Tuesday night brought me there. Not rebound of place you need to worry about making reservation or waiting for a table for, at least for a weeknight. I was pleasantly surprised by the food. $16 wine a bottle also helped the experience as well.
All three dishes ordered, Sheperds pie, Goat cheese salad (they deep fry a giant goat cheese ball) and seafood linguini, were quite decent for the price in the neighborhood. Seems like dessert was made inhouse as well, we housed the Tiramisu in less than 5 mins.
Will definitely come back on another Tuesday. -

I'm an actor turned politico, so math is not my strongest suit. But work on this equation with me for a moment and together we may find the answer.
Not-So-Great-Slightly-Overpriced-Food. -1
Average drinks. +0
Poor service. -1
Good friends. +1
Nondescript atmosphere. +0
All those added together make? That's right children, -1+0+-1+1+0 = -1.
Now let's subtract the +1 from my awesome friends being there, since that isn't really up to the establishment at all and we get? Uh huh. A negative two. Hmm. Weird.
I'll give it two stars just because I had some good times there; but those fond memories were made by spending time with awesome friends, and I have a feeling were those times spent at a different venue, the fond memories would be even fonder.Listed in: Britton's Bar Bible, Places I Like... Came here randomly on a Wed. night with friends because I live in the area; we started boozing it up at the bar which was lively enough for an off night.
The staff was real friendly, especially a bartender named Janet who was awesome. She would listen in on bits of our conversation and throw in funny comments; ended up being real cool. We were having a good time and decided on staying for food; it was standard stuff, bar food is either edible or its not and this was on the edible side. I was probably enjoying the booze a bit too much and by the time we left to catch a movie I had introduced myself as Drunk Face.
Definitely a place worth checking out if you're in the area. Its a cozy little joint that would be a welcome break from the Murray Hill scene.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Who wouldn't want to check out a restaurant named The Crooked Knife, especially at this time of year (fall, halloween)? The name alone was enough to entice my curiousity into joining my fellow co-workers during lunchtime at this "off the beaten path" pub.
Outside, I felt as if I was in Salem, Mass. It was decorated with pumpkins and hay bales, and provided a welcoming entrance to the restaurant. Inside, I really felt as if I were in New England. The dark woods, as well as the tinted glass designs, and the magical halloween decorations brought me out of the city and into the seaside towns of Massachusetts. Absolutely loved the interior.
For lunch I ordered the tuna and cranberry wrap. The fries that were on the side were nothing out of the ordinary. However, the sandwich was delightful. Two of my favorite tastes thrown together in one sandwich...yum.
Overall, I really liked this place because of the atmosphere. The food was pretty good as well...great place to head for lunch that is not the usual "fast food" or "sandwich shop" option.Listed in: 9 to 5 in Murray Hill

service was pretty bad considering the bar tenders love to sit and chat with their drama school friends and ignore other customers. This is Manhattan and I don't think it's too much to ask for someone to make a basic drink quickly. Worst part of it all is they don't seem to give a sh*t when they are wasting time while people wait for drinks. Bar food is a little expensive for what you get.
Outside dining isn't the greatest option since 30th between Park and Madison is one of the dirtiest streets in the area.
In general this is a place you should go if you have no other options. -

Such a good little find in the midst of Murray Hill.
I've lived in MH for 2 and a half years, and its a hard neighborhood to meet someone in for a drink. For conversation. For not wanting to be hit on by guys from Bayonne.
The Crooked Knife is, however, the perfect location. I've only been in Fall / Winter, where the cozy decor makes you feel all warm, especially during the holidays. Its a good bar to grab a nice glass of wine or a drink at, although, it can get crowded on occasion.
I've only eaten here once, I had their scallop salad, which was excellent and my date raved about his steak. The burgers look great too. I wouldn't say that its the most veggie friendly place, but if you're a meat-eater, the ambiance can't be beat, especially compared to its surroundings.Listed in: Murray Hill... from the…

As the guys at the table next to us lamented, "wow, this place's reviews on yelp are really going to suffer after this."
After deciding against a 2-hour wait for brunch at Penelope (yikes!), three of my friends and I walked down the road to this joint.
We should have just gone home.
The place was crowded enough to suggest it wouldn't suck, but still not busy. After waiting for our food for 45 minutes, they came out to tell us they were missing one of the ingredients and asked if we wanted to see the menu again. So they hadn't started preparing it yet?
An hour in, they bring us our food and 2/4 of the dishes are not what we ordered.
Second attempt to bring the correct order fails again.
Throughout this all the waitresses are incredibly rude, literally walking away while we are mid-sentence responding to their questions or politely asking when the food might be out.
1.5 hours later my friend and I had to leave and my other friend was still sitting unserved. The food I had might warrant 3 stars at a different restaurant.
I feel guilty for suggesting this place and urge you not to make the same mistake. -

Great, small place tucked away from the frat scene of Murray Hill. My college friend suggested this place because she and her boyfriend stumbled upon it using their Yelp application the night before. She told me secretly that the bartender had given their party a free shot after their second round of drinks (that is an old custom that is basically dead in NYC).
Anyway, we did not go there for shots. We went there to chat, catch up and enjoy the beautiful weather (that has FINALLY decided to grace us with its presence here after such a horrid winter). We sat outside (very limited outdoor seating) and shared the mussels and each got a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The mussels were well prepared and a little spicy (which I liked) and the wine was chilled and crisp and perfect for a summer day... okay, May day.
The waitress was attentive and nice and we sat for about an hour without feeling rushed. I'd definitely stop by at night sometime or come here for a date. Very reasonably priced and looked cute inside! -

Brunch review: Nice atmosphere in there, and there's plenty of space so you can actually get a table, which is saying something at 11:00am on a Saturday. Coffee was standard, a little on the weak side. Service was attentive if a bit disorganized. Ordered the steak and eggs, and they did a nice job with it: the steak itself was tender and cooked properly, the eggs were still runny on the inside, their home fries were cooked up with onions and peppers and had nice flavour, and they did something I've never seen anywhere else, which is put two pieces of bacon on the home fries. Nice touch. My date was not as pleased with her Eggs Benedict, however. Altogether, solid if unremarkable.

Came here last week with my husband and my in laws. We showed up for an early dinner and were the only ones there, which means the customer service should have been AMAZING, right? Not so much. BUT dont stop reading the review there. The atmosphere of this place was very similar to most of the pubs we went to in Ireland (this is a good thing) except instead of tvs showing sports, this place has music going.
So we ordered our food. I had the fish and chips. The fish was delicious, the chips yummy. My husband had the shepherds pie and it was very good. Even though he was getting full he finished every last bite because he didnt want to waste it. My mother in law had the pork chops and my father in law had the burger. Everyone really enjoyed their food and my father in law said "it was cooked how i asked" which for him is kind of the equivalent of standing up and clapping. =) I had my left over fish and chips two days later and it was still amazingly yummy!
The downfall is the service. How did we get hardly any service when we were the only ones there for awhile?? When we showed up we were seated promptly and brought our water. When the waiter dropped off a beer he literally put it on the table and hurried away to another table without saying anything. We hadnt even noticed it was put on the table till my husband almost knocked it over. When the waiter came back to ask us if we planned to order food he was almost rude about it. But dont worry because that was the last time that waiter ever came to our table except when he swooped over to take our ketchup.... we ended up having 3 waiters that night but still had to wait for boxes, and checks, and drinks and what not....
Long story short: Come for the food, stay for the fact that if the service still sucks as much as it did for us, youll save money on the tip! -
Review from Krista J.
After dining at The Crooked Knife twice in the past few months, I can say with enough conviction that this Murray Hill pub is really great!
For my first dining experience, I ate with a co-worker inside the restaurant on a wintry day. The aura inside is quite warm and inviting, very Irish. The restaurant is split, with some table-topss near the bar area and some strictly off to a main dining area. We sat near the bar, and it wasn't too loud during lunch. The Fish & Chips ($15) was the perfect meal to warm me up that day.
Now that its summer, I ventured back with two friends since The Crooked Knife has outside dining. Being on the north side of the street, it gets some direct sunlight, so awnings are lowered over the ten or so outside tables. I opted for the lunch special of 1/2 Chicken Caesear Wrap with Fries ($12), which was absolutely delicious and just the right amount of food. I also had a glass of the Prosecco ($8) which really helped make the meal special.
The servers are friendly and helpful, the prices are reasonable, and the food is delicious. I'd go back for lunch sometime soon.
