This is probably the only good seafood restaurant in all of Newport that I can bring my one year old to and not get the stink eye from the staff or patrons.
Get the clam chowdah with a loaf of bread and thank me later.

The only place I know where the waitresses are crustier than the hot bread.
Not sure why all the hype. The concept is sound, but the fish is lousy with butter, the potatoes with cream and the cole slaw with mayo.
The scallops were the tiny variety, and the bacon on the skewer was non-existent.
The loud drunk galoot behind me seemed happy with everything.

MY FAVORITE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN THE OC!
Just picture the freshest seafood, seasoned with cajun spices, and glazed with a touch of butter. Everything from scallops to white meat fish just melts in your mouth! And their cheesy mashed potatoes are literally to die for. SOO cheesy that it even has a layer of semi-burnt layer of cheese on the bottom, it's sinful! & get this, they have Manhanttan clam chowder aka red clam chowder!! Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a place that serves red clam chowder? VERY. It has long strips of clams and a very healthy alternative to the New England version.
Don't need the break down, this place is amazing!

Fantastic! My daughter always brings me here when I visit. Very fun and casual atmosphere. Food is fantastic. One of the best places to get Alaskan king crab! Enormous crab legs. Try the Manhattan clam chowder also .
So this place is the best "Ma & Pa" shop I have ever eaten at for seafood.
This place is so classy, paper plates, spoons and forks and cups. Lol. I love it!
The waitresses there look like they grew up with the place and have been there for generations and are so friendly and welcoming.
I had the combo plate with the BEST mashed potatoes I have ever had in my life.
Please do me a favor and visit this place with someone that really loves seafood and they will love you.

I starting eating her as a little kid! I spent my summers on the beach and eating the great food here on the benches outside the front door. The chowder (red the only way it should come) is the best in the us. It is not chowda as some have posted.. It is chowder!!!!! If you are in a hurry and want to enjoy the nice weather then eat out on the benches. Order at the counter while looking at the fresh fish in the case. Service is quick. If you have more time then eat inside, Everything is Killer here.. Shrimp and Scallop skewers are the best around, gilled on an open charbrolier and finished with some butter is a must. Nice size. The shrimp or crab cocktails are great as well. You must ask for Dee as your server. She is the best!!!! The homemade crusty bread is excellent. I now have my 9 year old eating here as well. On your way do not forget to grab our free taffy out of the jar! This places rocks!!!!!!!!!!
Good Manhattan style clam chowder. I dig the bread sticks and biscuit croutons at the dining tables. I wish they made jambalaya, though.
I love The Crab Cooker. The menu is simple, food is good, wait staff are extremely attentive, and the plates and utensils are disposable... what is not to like?
A wait is not uncommon, especially on weekends, peak seasons, and mealtimes.
Personally, I recommend the Fisherman's Bread and Clam Chowder as appetizers. For the entrée, I recommend the "Combination Plate," which includes shrimp, scallops, and fish.
All plates include seafood sauce, lemon, and a choice of potatoes or rice and cole slaw or tomatoes.
Both the bread and Clam Chowder are below $5. Dinner entrées are generally about $15. Lunch plates -- which include smaller portions -- are generally about $11. The Alaskan King Crab is about $30 -- regardless of whether lunch or dinner.

They have the best clam chowder ever. I usually get large bowl of clam chowder, walk across the street to the beach, and enjoy my clam chowder with a nice sunset. There are HUGE strips of clam in the chowder. Fair warning though, it is not your normal clam chowder; It's Manhattan style, which is tomato based.
I sat in their restaurant once to order food. Their crab cakes are really good, and the seafood is very fresh. Too bad I can't order a large clam chowder int he dining area.
A classic style eatery. Seriously. I bet that they have not changed much since the day they opened. Food is served on paper plates/bowls, plastic cups. No fancy china here. The seafood is plentiful and fresh.
I have had the shrimp cocktail here and it is great. But the main reason I go is for the chowder. After all it is so cheap and so dang filling. It is chock full of clam, wonderful potato and tomato bits....then you add a few crumbled cracker balls. Enough to make me weak at the knees.
I have been coming here since I was a young foodie. My family would get a few bowls to go and then go sit at the beach or on the bench outside and munch away. In fact I was 22 before I actually ate in the restaurant itself! It is a bit of a wait at the dinner hour. Or you can go to the Tustin location, less crowded, just as good. But there is just something about the one in Newport Beach. Besides, it is served so piping hot that a walk to the pier is well called for to let it cool off a bit. After all, the scenery at the beach can be a feast as well! Wink Wink!

This is definitely a place worth checking out. Come with your family or on a date.
The Crab Cooker has been around for 55+ years and has been a neighborhood staple at Newport Beach.
From the welcoming servers, to the ambiance, to fresh fresh seafood. Its all so worth the wait.
My family and I came on a Sunday night, imagine there were 9 of us and a baby. The wait for table judging by the crowed sitting on the benches on the sidewalk looked discouraging. But we tried and the host was so nice and welcoming and honest. He told us it would be about an hour to an hour and a half wait. With just a little hesitation we decided to stick it out. I mean from what we've heard its so worth the wait.
While we waited it was tradition to have some of their tomato based clam chowder. It was delicious. I mean I'm still fan of New England cream based chowder but for the red chowder it wasn't bad.
About 30 minutes later we were called to our table. It wasn't such a long wait after all. We were seated in a comfortable table family style.
The ambiance of the place is a little over the top but I think that's what makes the place so homey and special. The service is a little slow but its okay, it gave us a time to chat. I love the breadsticks they have on the table.
The menu is plentiful. Make sure you are a seafood lover when you come because there are no chicken or meat served here.
We ordered the steamed mussels for appetizer and I ordered the Alaskan Crab Claws with mashed potatoes and tomato and my husband got the grilled scallops with rice pilaf and tomato.
We both loved our food. Not only was the seafood fresh but in total everything was perfectly steamed, grilled, mashed, and sliced.
So all in all, most definitely check this place out if your in the Newport area. Be prepared for a wait but have a cup of clam chowder. Must order crab since its called Crab Cooker and team it up with a nice glass of wine they offer.
"interesting" place. Met some good friends here the other night, and my mind is still swirling.
Ok, so I don't mind plastic forks/spoons/paper plates. And when I order a bottle of wine, I don't THINK I mind plastic wine glasses (ok, jury is still out on this).
The good:
Calamari - (aka squid). VERY nicely done. And tasty, with a nice dipping sauce. GREAT swordfish, very well prepped.
The bad:
Tomato based chowder? Wow...as a Bay Area resident, this is a crime. Perhaps at the capital level (we'll let Gavin decide, but man, this is serious).
The ugly:
jury's verdict is in. Plastic wine glasses?
Overall, "interesting". Good food, but "interesting"

I had the chowder here and its too die for. Ive ordered other things on the menu and they dont come close. Had some fried shrimp, they were ok. If there was a chowder rating they would get a 5
Delicious! My husband and I ate here last night and I really liked it! We started off w/ the clam chowder (I didn't really like it, it tasted more like vegetable soup than clam chowder... he liked it though). Then we split the king crab appetizer! realllllly good!! but.. the portion was small for $16. then we split the combination plate! shrimp was excellent! scallops were excellent! cheese mashed potatoes, excellent! tartar sauce... mmmmmmm good!
super casual restaurant, and they serve their meals on paper plates and drinks in paper cups. next time i want to try the crab cakes. i think our meal was less than $40 total.. not bad for how good the food was!
Wow. Seafood is great there All you can eat breadstick on the table is fantastic.Marsh potatoes is delicious. We had crab leg, Alaskan shrimp, cocktail crab and shrimp, Red chowder and more shrimps.
I will definitely go back soon.
I ADORE THIS PLACE! First of all, the only reason why we stepped into this restaurant was because of my boyfriend's awesome IPhone Yelp app. Once my phone contract is up, I am going to get an IPhone.
Anyways, I love that this place has so much history, and it is so casual and efficient. The waitresses are sweethearts who are not stingy with the sauces, lemons, etc you ask for. Everything is served on paper plates, plastic cups and utensils. I love feeling like a savage when I have seafood, making a huge mess all over my table. Something about that makes the seafood experience much more satisfying.
You have to try the breadsticks in the little plastic containers on your table. Yes it seems rather unsanitary since everyone reaches into the containers, but my god, those breadsticks are so addicting.
Get the Manhattan Clam Chowder, which is a clam chowder with a tomato base instead of milk. It gives the soup a tart and hearty flavor instead of an artery-clogging concoction of heavy, thick cream. This was my first time hearing about Manhattan clam chowder, but I don't think I can have regular New England clam chowder after this experience. Add a few drops of Tabasco too!
We also got the Alaskan King Crab Claws, which were good but not great. I'm not a huge fan of claws, but my boyfriend really liked them. I do love that all the crab here is pre-cracked and easy to pick out of the shell, usually in one whole piece. There's also something rather satisfying about getting all of the crab meat in one try.
We also got the Alaskan King Crab entree, which was so much better. I have not had such fresh and delicious king crab in my life. Ask for cocktail sauce and lemons if you aren't into using butter with your seafood. I loveee dousing lemon juice and cocktail sauce all over crab.
For our sides, we got cole slaw and cheesy mashed potatoes. They are mediocre. The mashed potatoes were a bit too "solid" for me, to the point where if I picked it up with a fork and tried to fling it somewhere, it will not budge. Kind of odd if you ask me.
Other than that, the seafood blew my mind and far exceeded my expectations. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I love that you get hefty portions for a decent price too!
CRAB. My family and I have been coming to the Crab Cooker as far back as I can remember. I've brought friends here and I even have eaten here by myself. The funny thing is, in all my numerous visits to this place I've never ordered their crab!
I've ordered shrimp, I've ordered scallops, I've ordered salmon, I've basically ordered and tried everything on the menu but the crab. Somehow I am the only one in my family who doesn't want to fadoodle with crab. Don't get me wrong, I love crab meat I just don't like working for it!
Anyway, my favorite item on the menu is not even a seafood. I like the garlic mashed potatoes. I like the way they grill it and has that crust on the bottom. The seafood here at the Crab Cooker is very fresh. I've never ordered anything here that I regretted.
The Crab Cooker is a no nonsense Newport Beach institution. They serve food on paper plates instead of fancy China. I actually like the casualness of the place. The service is very prompt but very abrupt. This place can really get busy, but I've been noticing it hasn't lately. I guess seafood places are now mushrooming all over and it is taking a bite to the Crab Cooker's business.
Finding parking to come to the Crab Cooker can be a pain, but like the diminished long wait it hasn't been lately also. Maybe I should try the crab, just in case.

Let start with parking, in general, sucks in this area, you can drive around and try your luck. I'll just go straight to the paid lot at the back. Very lovely and friendly attendant in the lot BTW. If she weren't there with her hubby / BF, I won't mind to stay for a while to chat.
Waiting time, not as bad as I think it would be, I was mentally prepared to wait up to 2hrs on a Sat night. Got there around 7:15, got a table a little after 8pm, not too too bad.
Was told that the clam chowder is a must. Tried it, not exactly the type that I like simply cos I'm more of a cream based soup fan, and their clam chowder are tomato based. Still tasted good.

The beer size is a little small for me, as I drink a lot, (beer, soda, coffee) so anything smaller than a 32oz is bad.
Even better if they sell it in pitcher.
Don't leave without take some salt water taffy by the entrance.
Interestingly the lady in front of me had her bag opened and almost took the whole jar with her.
I love the crab here!
they crack the shell for you so it's easy to eat!
The waitresses here are super sweet!
I always finish my plate of crab,
Yummy!

Amazing seafood. Caught fresh daily and really really tended to. The inside is quirky and cute, with paper placemats and lots of napkins to accommodate your sticky fingers after a basket of popcorn shrimp. As some of the other reviewers have notes, the atmosphere is above the food, but don't let that dissuade you from going.
The sole reason this place gets a 4 instead of a 3 is its clam chowder with bread sticks. AMAZING. It's so perfectly created with the right amount of spices and a really enjoyable aroma and flavor.
This place can get a line during the summer when the nights are hot and you're craving seafood. So make sure to get in line early, otherwise you'll be outta luck!

Why do places in great locations, or in tourist areas always have to suck?
Over priced, and all the fish taste the same. The stuff behind the market counter is decent (smoked albecore, shimp, and crab meat cocktails), but anything on the menu, pass. I also hope you dont get thisty because your drink is served in a paper dixie cup. Go to bear flag down the street if you want fish.
It is what it is. Reasonably priced tasty seafood served on paper plates.
Hit it anytime for lunch or midweek in the evening for dinner and you usually wont wait for a table. So much better than "Joes the sizzler of seafood"

My bf's friend was in the mood for Crab Cooker so we decided to check it out. We found street parking before 6PM so we popped in some quarters, put our name down and waited to be called.
Once inside you can order items to go or wait in line. The decor is plastered with street signs and fishes and paintings. By mistake I had loaded up on some sour cream and onion chips so I wasn't too hungry. As a result, I ordered a bowl of their Manhattan clam chowder ($2.50) which I was glad I did since the fog was rolling into Newport Beach.
The tables had plastic containers with bread sticks and bread crackers (really salty) which are dry if you're eating them alone. The chowder was pretty darn good. Creamy, thick, full of shredded slivers of clams, potatoes and other veggies. It had a great tomato base to it and I wish I had ordered another bowl.
The bf ordered Atlantic salmon fillet ($15.00) with rice and cole slaw. The salmon was cooked perfectly pink and was tender and juicy. The sides were okay, but the tarter sauce was delish! Nice and creamy!
I especially liked the glass bowl of taffy that you can help yourself to and they even have 3 different postcards for you to take. They even have complimentary stamping for you as well! How neat is that?!

I love this place, I often joke that if I had one last meal it would be the Alaskan King Crab legs and butter here. It is consistently fresh, I've been eating here for decades and it's always been good. Usually a really long line, but if you get there early or late you can cut down on wait time, less crowded during the winter.
There are many other items on the menu but do yourself a favor and pop for the King Crab. It's already cracked for you so it's a pleasure to eat. Just dip it in the piping hot butter and go to heaven. They have some really good Red Manhattan Clam Chowder which you can also buy at the market out front. It has the biggest pieces of clam I've ever had the pleasure of eating in a chowder.
Highly recommended

Good seafood. Fresh fish catch of the day was tender and juicy. Clam chowder had tasty clams and was nice and tomatoey. Breadsticks were good and crunchy. They even have complimentary salt water taffy at the front .
The perfect example of a TRUE seafood restaurant! Fantastic food, perfect location, and no ambiance!
I've been eatin here ever since I was a kid, and this is still my favorite place for clam chowder, crab cocktails, and the raw!
Yes, parking does suck. Never come during the summer since parking is non existent. Come here just to eat some amazingly fresh faire.
The fish is ok, but the brochettes of scallops, shrimp, and others are the winners here!

Hate to rain on the love fest but this place is just ok. It was my second time here, because after coming here I remembered that I had come two years ago and didn't think it was great then either.
The grilled mussels appetizer had some ice cold grilled mussels in warm shells. If it had just cooled off after being cooked the mussels would be warm. It was as if cold mussels were placed in the shells and not properly warmed. The halibut was just ok. Jocko's, in Nipomo up the coast, serves a huge portion of the most delicious halibut at a reasonable price and it's a steak restaurant. A seafood restaurant should do better.
The paper plates and plastic utensils are a turnoff. Someone commented that any beer smaller than 32 oz is too small, but these beers are 7 ounces, give me a break.
So the casual vibe is great, but the food is not up to snuff. Afterwards, a local said to try the Whale Tail instead.
This is place is... interesting. I came here with my mom when she thought seafood sounded better than The Old Spaghetti Factory. I told her she could get a shrimp pasta, but she wanted seafood. So instead we came here. At 8:45 pm on a Saturday we found parking immediately behind the building. No wait, we were seated right away and served some water in paper cups. We each had a cup of clam chowder and decided to share the Alaskan King Crab legs.
The clam chowder was good-- it's the red variety, so a little different than we were both expecting, but still enjoyable. At only $2.50/cup it's a pretty good deal too.
At $29.99 for dinner, we expected the crab legs to be at least a marginally larger portion. Yes, it was one giant leg, but we saw plates of shrimp and swordfish walk by that were half the price and GIGANTIC. Also, the sides here are a jokes. I don't know what's in the potatoes, but they're gnarly. The tomatoes were a nice touch, but that's not really filling.
I'd probably come back here again to try this place for lunch or to have some of their more generously-portioned dinner entrees, but while the crab was amazing, it's still not quite worth what they're charging. I mean, come on, it's frozen. I know it's stupid, you're out at a restaurant, but it's not like we're paying for decor or a fancy experience at this place-- this place is not a fancy steakhouse-- this shit is $14/pound at Costco and just as good.
For a dive experience, I want dive prices-- and not just on the beverages.
The saltwater taffy upon exit was a nice touch and I'm sure I'll be back again, but I still think I will steer clear of their pricier options, out of fear of feeling ripped off!

**Time-Warp Alert**
Now here is a place that has stood the test of time. I've been coming here with my family for over 40 years. That may be the thing I like the most, it hasn't changed for the most part. Why did they switch from jawbreakers to taffy? I remember back about 30 years when they had little tent cards on the tables explaining why they served on all disposable plates, cups and utensils. Order anything on the menu you can't go wrong.
Oh, and they only serve seafood, mesquite grilled, nothing fried. Not even one Chicken entree, Fish Only!
A classic and crowd favorite on Balboa Peninsula that specializes in mesquite broil cooking. Served on paper plates in this no-frills place where the Clam Chowder reigns supreme.
$$
You either love it, or you hate it. But most all love it. I'm not sure why there is such division in opinions, I've never found the food to be inconsistent. I've never had any food here I didn't enjoy. I love the simplicity of the paper plates, plastic utensils and cups, not to mention the bread sticks. Nothing fried, all open pit grilled/broiled.
I suppose it's all in a mind set i.e. depends on what you were expecting prior to going in. I've eaten here well over 100 times. We spent many, many summers in N.P. Bch. and would ride our bikes up to Manhattan Bch. and back. We always seemed to gravitate back to the CC. It was like a magnet.
We loved the Manhattan Clam Chowder.
I loved the killer crab claws.
We loved the shrimp on a skewer.
I loved the king crab.
We loved the smoked halibut appetizer.
And they have a good tartar sauce.
I will say, the potatoes are better than the rice.
All I can say about bad experiences at any place you expect good food and good service is , if you don't get what you expected, let the management know, and don't pay. That's the best type of feedback and it will correct quality issues in most restaurant.

This was a total waste of money. I came here because of an article in the OC Register on who has the best chowder (http://www.ocregister....).
I love Manhattan Clam Chowder and my family has eaten it for decades. So when I read that the Crab Cooker has some kind of "legendary" Manhattan Clam Chowder "ambrosia," I had to try it out.
WHAT WE ORDERED:
- Clam Chowder (cup for $2.25): The chowder tasted a lot like seafood gumbo, but with big stringy, chewy tough pieces of fishy-tasting clams. It was like chewing on leather strings. If this really is "clam" chowder... then the one basic ingredient in their name is a failure.
- Breadsticks (free on the table): The breadsticks tasted like crunchy mini-baguettes. Dipping these into the chowder made the chowder easier to eat.
- Oyster Crackers (free on the table): These are huge nuggets of oyster crackers and taste a lot like their small, packaged counterpart except that these were a lot drier and was more like a baked ball of flour.
- Crab Cakes Appetizer ($9): You get two crab cakes a little smaller in diameter than a chips ahoy cookie. This was toasted/crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. But it tasted pretty fishy if eaten by itself. The pieces of "crab" inside were also a bit tough. The tartar sauce made the crab cakes palatable.
- Scallop & Shrimp Skewer Dinner ($15): When you first see the skewer, it's hard to tell which pieces are the scallop and which are the shrimp. They kind of mash them both together on one stick and sprinkle paprika over it. The shrimp was very dry and over-cooked and the scallop tasted like it was previously frozen.
- Rice Pilaf (came w/ dinner plate): Fluffy with little bits of noodles. It looked a lot better than it tasted. The rice was very bland. It wasn't salted/seasoned in the least.
- "Drawn Butter" (came w/ dinner plate): This tasted like warm oil with a hint of butter.
- Cole Slaw (came w/ dinner plate): This tasted like finely chopped cabbage in mayonnaise water. wtf?! To make this taste like cole slaw... add some tartar sauce.
Save yourself the money and don't eat here. Go to a real seafood restaurant. And if you want to eat good Manhattan Clam Chowder, go to Redondo Beach.

Before eating here, a friend and I heard from a group waiting outside that this place had "the best seafood in all of OC!". Of corse, it is never wise to follow that kind of advice (case in point).
Here's the deal: The clam chowder (tomato based, more like a vegetable/minestrone soup plus clams) is weak to the taste, despite saying on the cup that it's the "best clam chowder in the world". Another example of how it is not wise to believe that kind of talk.
I didn't really dig the small plastic cups and plastic silverware. This isn't a fast food joint, and we aren't paying $5-10 for dinner. I ordered the Halibut and my friend ordered the shrimp and scallops. I was impressed by the cole slaw and romano mashed potatoes, which were very good. The Halibut was good, but not great. It's hard to screw up a fish like Halibut, and I'm not saying they did, but it wasn't outstanding. I tried my friends scallops and they were a little to overcooked and chewy for my taste. Overall, the meal was good, but it is overpriced and gimmicky. Despite its history, I think this is more of a tourist trap than anything else. Its probably better suited to serve lunch. But after the drive from the westside of LA, it sure looked good from the menu and the kitchen. It reminds me of some local seafood joints back in my hometown of Deerfield Beach, Florida, but The Crab Cooker has a long way to go before it can live up to that.

This is a really fun place to dine, I noticed alot of locals as well as tourists while waiting for a table. There's two different dining experiences going on here : 1). While your waiting, sit outside on the bench in front of that red wall and eat a bowl of Manhattan like the locals do. Note: (whoever in your party is driving and looking for parking spot WONT be partaking in this).
The Chowder is heavy on the clam flavor, they have plenty of Tabasco handy too . 2). Once your seated its like a laid back diner with pleasant chatty waitresses. The diner foods good but not as memorable as the Chowder.

We eat here every time we are in town. Both locations are great and the food is always fresh.
We came here for a birthday dinner... I noticed a couple here for their birthday as well.... (i felt bad for the b-day girl).... Anyhow, it was my friends b-day and he wanted to come here so we all met up.... It is not very often that I eat crab but I did.. It was tasty.. A bit too rich I think... It was really busy and that is the only part that sucked because I had not eaten since lunch and it was after 8 when we got in.. So, I was a tad hungry and I was getting over the idea of eating. Sorry to my friends because I was less exciting and out going as I usually am... Being sick really sucks... Over all the service here was good.... Parking can be a little bit of a pain....
NOTE: MEN IF YOU EVER BRING YOUR LADY HERE FOR HER BIRTHDAY YOU ARE JUST SO FUCKING WRONG AND SHOULD BE BEATEN IN THE HEAD SEVERAL TIMES! .... (like I said I felt sorry for that poor girl who came here for her b-day.. She appeared less than excited and her man seemed way stoked to be here.. My conclusion.. It was his idea and his desire to come here.. not hers...)
NOTE: THINK ROMANTIC! This place is cute but not for a date... or a special event like you significant other b-day... Maybe you kid but not your partner... just saying...

This restaurant was awesomely fun!! I went there expecting something more like "The Crab Pot" but was delighted when I walked in and saw all the great kitschy decor! My date and I were immediately seated and we laughed when we saw the mismatched plastic silverware and the dixie cups that they serve water in. We ordered a red wine which came with PLASTIC punch cups! (ALL part of its charm, trust me!)
The service was excellent. Very nice and attentive. The food was tasty but not excellent but the wonderful setting more than made up for that little flaw.
As our waitress cleaned up our table, my date asked if I wanted dessert. The waitress pipes up that there is NO dessert (which was fine since we were both stuffed; he's just an awesome date like that!)
I had a great time and definitely recommend it!

Local lobster = Best lobster ever!
When this is in season it's reasonable ~$16 for lunch ~$25 for dinner and tastes fabulous!
Only thing keeping it from a 5 are the limited choice of sides but heck, double romano potatoes it is...
