After spending more than a year trying to get several independent contractors to complete a small project on our house (for 6 months we had a blue tarp covering a hole in the side of the house), we knew we needed professional help when we decided to build a 3000 sq ft multi-use building (winery, agricultural, entertainment, etc.) on the property.  During our search for a builder we got several highly favorable recommendations for the Conrado Company.  At our first meeting Paul Conrado (the president) mentioned that his philosophy was to produce honest/realistic estimates for the costs, which might be higher than some other builders (at least initially), but would not rise because every little thing needed an "upgrade" (You wanted a drain in that sink?  Well...).

Paul came to all of the design meetings with our architect to ensure that what was being proposed would both work for our needs, and would fit our budget.  He offered reasonable alternatives when proposed options didn't seem quite right.  When the design was complete and the initial bid finally came in, it was a little higher than we'd hoped, but working with Paul we were able to bring the cost down without sacrificing any of our key requirements. For example, reviewing our original roof choice, Conrado pointed out that it would cost less to import tiles from France than pay for local reclaimed mission tiles (our original choice) - now we have the most amazing roof ever, perfect for a winery, and it saved money.

Once construction started, we were never more than a couple weeks off the initial construction schedule (quite a change from having to pull teeth to get a contractor out when we tried to manage our own project).  Problems were caught and addressed immediately by the project manager (Dan Singleton).   We ended up coming in on budget and a week ahead of schedule.  The quality of the construction is awesome.  We had a furniture builder in to do some work and he was amazed by the workmanship on both the window frames and exposed rafters.  One section of the building is covered in stone.  A friend in the process of building their own home remarked that it must be nice that we were able to use a full stones rather than veneer for our building.  It turns out we did use veneer, but it was installed so well, it looked just like the real thing.

Overall, Conrado made building a painless process (no small feat from what I've heard).  And best of all, as a customer, you get invited to his great winemaking parties!

We're currently working with these guys on having an addition built to our house. It's nice to work with the same people who were the original builders of the house itself since they already know what they're dealing with. So far so good. We've met several times for the design on the addition and their architect is working her magic on getting the structural assessments done, the permits put together, etc. Will post update once actual destruction/contruction occurs. As for now, we're quite satisfied with the attention we're getting from them.

Update (6/14): It turns out that our part of town just had this new rule pass last fall about square footage counting as double in rooms with ceilings that are 15 feet or above in height, making our house above the maximum square footage. Before the rule, we were allowed another 600 square feet to build on. We were really bummed to have discovered this especially after spending so much time (and money) with their architect drafting up a floor plan.

I don't want to think about it any more for I'm sure it will only infuriate me. I suspect that someone dropped the ball on checking with the planning department first before going as far as meeting with us to design the floor plan. We spent several weeks as well as several thousand dollars for floor plans that is now just rolled up on the floor somewhere in my husband's office. Grr!

Perhaps taking away one star from my original 4 star rating will make me feel a tad better.

We recently used Conrado Home Builders to do exterior painting and an update to our plumbing system.  Talk about a pleasant experience!  Conrado's sub contractors are the best. They show up when expected, do great work and are meticluous about the details. If all the subcontractors that The Conrado  Home builders have are this great, building a custom home has got to be an enjoyable experience.  How often do you hear that?

Our 20 year old home (built by someone else) is large and complex.  Over the last several years we have used the Conrado Company for both large and small projects including a recent new roof and solar panel installation.  The project was managed with care, precision, and attention to detail.  Conrado has excellent relationships with the best subs who do great work because they want continued business.  Other excellently managed and executed projects include a major retrofit of the hot water system, flawless replacement of damaged exterior wood,  and smaller electrical and plumbing projects.  Paul Conrado is extraordinarily experienced.  His company will always do it right.
