The Coffee Table is being forced to close its doors in Silverlake - after 14 years of a successful business!  The property was bought out, and they are forced to let go of their employees and basically say good bye to their loyal customers!

Very sad... so many lost jobs....

I was running early for a haircut appt down the street at Establishment LA and was excited to find out that I'd be able to have some coffee and breakfast here.  I used to work at an art gallery in Silverlake that no longer is there during my last year of undergrad and frequented this place to pick up lunch for my bosses or coffee in the mornings.  That was back in 2007.  So it'd been a while, but I was hoping it was as yummy as I'd remembered.

Wrong.  My Silverlake omelette was uber dry and I had to pick it apart to find the chicken sausage and avocado.  The cute covered patio out back was new to me and as nice an environment it was, my food was sub par.  The fresh fruit was however, sweet.  I was lucky to find parking directly in front as parking and just driving down Rowena can be a bitch - it's hard to get out of driveways or small streets, you can't really U-turn...I digress.

I was disappointed my food wasn't as good as it used to be, but the service was still prompt and friendly.  I'm sorry to hear this place is closing/is closed cause it's still a great place to come for a latte or catch up with old friends.

Since there are well over two hundred reviews about The Coffee Table, I will spare everybody an attempt to characterize this place in general in favor of what I very specifically like.

I like having breakfast at The Coffee Table after a long trip. If you want to feel better about how sleep deprived you are because jet lag has socked you in the head and thrown your equilibrium completely off, you can go get some breakfast the next morning, and the breeze that passes through the back patio - just over a nicely-arranged plate of tofu scramble, so California - will give you the soul-hug that you need.

I also like to get the gumbo here, for dinner. Especially on those nights when I will be eating dinner alone and I don't want to feel like a big dork about eating dinner alone because everyone else is pretty much alone too. The gumbo is a great value. There is lots of it and it comes with a couple slices of toasted rosemary bread.

I don't like to come here if I have a lot of work I have to accomplish on the computer. There are only a few working outlets by the front door and those spaces seem to be perpetually taken. So clever of them to place them where the high chairs are: not comfortable.

I often go in the hopes that I might get a sighting of a certain rock star that I idolized as a teenager.

    NAME: The Coffee Table

TYPE OF CUISINE: New American "Silverlake"

ADDRESS: 2930 Rowena Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90039

    PHONE: 323-644-8111

GENERAL LOCATION: South side of Rowena, just east of Avenel

PARKING SITUATION: Mainly metered street parking; and a VERY small shared lot just east of the building

    WEBSITE: Here's a third-party menu site: http://losangeles.menu...

RESERVATIONS: If you have a large party

    HOURS: Daily 7 am-10 pm

    WHEELCHAIR ACCESS: Yes

    DELIVERY SERVICE: No

BANQUET FACILITIES: Maybe you could reserve the rear outdoor section; call for info

    CATERING: No

    TAKEOUT: Yes

    VEGGIE FACTOR: Very much so

    KID FACTOR: It's shriekerscreamer friendly

OUTDOOR SEATING: Yes, both front and back

FOOD/DRINK: I have been here a number of times "pre-Yelp," but this was the first "post-Yelp" occasion. My son and his wife invited us out for a Father's Day breakfast.

The food is always good. Everything is always well and conscientiously prepared and tasty, and well and artfully arranged on the plate. You know you're going to get a good meal when you come here, that's a main reason why it's so popular. I had a fruit plate and the French Toast Croissant. The toast, for some reason was crushed flat, but tasty, especially with the sweet butter and the real maple syrup. I also had an "Arnold Palmer," which seems to be a combination of peach tea and lemonade on the rocks. Very refreshing.

    SERVICE: Friendly, efficient

AMBIANCE/ATMOSPHERE: Very laid back and old-school hipster -- reminds me of my Beatnik days. Customers love to eat and schmooze. Very pleasant place to be. Interesting artwork around, and interesting patterns on the inlaid tables.

    NOISE FACTOR: Acceptable

    PRICE RANGE: Reasonable

    PAYMENT: Cash, CC

RED FLAG: Very bad parking situation

    GREEN FLAG: Food, service, atmosphere

AMBER FLAG: Come early enough to find parking so you'll meet your friends on time

BOTTOM LINE: If you're willing to do the parking thing, you'll be well rewarded at the dinner table! If the place was nearer to WeHo, I'd go more often.

I was skeptical when I saw the menu. Not because of its contents, but for the fact that it's printed entirely in comic fucking sans. Dock one star.

I got over it. This place holds great appeal. Unpretentious, with music played from the radio. Not Sirius, not Pandora. Like, FM radio. No Washed Out or Twin Shadow for you, bro. Also revel in the the fact that the non-hipster staff here give off an indifferent (yet not discourteous) New York vibe. They get your coffee and/or food, don't judge, and leave you alone. You can camp out all day and no one will give a fuck. Awesome.

The place itself is gigantic. Unlike some other joints, this is not a substitute office (SIlverlake Coffee) or library (Bricks and Scones). It's whatever you want. Conversing won't get you the dreaded arched eybrow. And you can get work done here too. The outdoor patio in the back is covered and very comfortable, though the outlets don't work. Doesn't really bother me though as I'm just there reading obscure philosophy texts for fun and profit.

Not the best coffee in the world, and the food is average (though satisfying). But portions are HUGE, and the menu is really diverse. It's really a diner posing as a coffee shop (complete with burgers and salmon dinners and the like). So go. I'm pretty much here all the time now, which really makes this a 5-star review.

Edit: The Green Burrito is one of the better breakfast burritos I've had. Proper hangover cure material.

Loved this place!! Makes me wish I lived closer..

Pretty reasonable, I think I paid like 9 bucks for the Silverlake omelet, which was really good btw and came with fresh fruit and potatoes..

Everyone seemed very relaxed and chill. I went on Saturday, around 11am and wasn't packed at all. It took about 5 minutes in line to order. The back outdoor patio is awesome for a little sun while u eat...

    That's all I'm gonna say..go try it!!

My ultimate favorite place to have CHAI LATTES! they have the best!
The food is really good,, fresh fruits and decent desserts. Theyve got a bunch of gluten free and small sized desserts for the conscious crowds. the outdoor patio is my fav, the colors the cool breeze as your reading a good book or getting some work done is awesome!
Its definitely a sweet hidden place in Silverlake!

My review is based solely on what I ordered: Vegetarian Burrito. I look forward to visiting again and ordering something else so I can update this review.

I was disappointed when I got the vegetarian burrito and it contained only egg and some cheese. I was, maybe mistakenly, expecting other things in there like beans, rice, avocado or at least a fourth ingredient!

Itook a bite out of my dining companions grilled chicken panini with pesto sauce and that seemed pretty good.

I like the place though. Relaxed. Airy. Lots of art from local artists. Out of the way.

First time ever to this location. In the past we have always gone to the Eagle Rock location which I love. Especially the simplicity of simply ordering at the counter no need to wait for service. ANyhoo, we came here for brunch yesterday with some friends. The back patio is so cute. Though it was a warm day it was still nice in the shade. Tons of seating and I highly recommend trying their fresh smoothies and get the Chicken Salad sandwich on Focaccia bread. Thats what the BF ordered sort of made my two eggs my style a tad boring after having a bite of his incredible sandwich. The eggs are still good  but that sandwich.. and that Rosemary in the bread.. sigh..

I absolutely LOVE this place, a real gem!  Most would think a "coffee shop" is for coffee and croissants but The Coffee Table has the most fabulous food!

The staff is so great and is so good to me, super friendly and always accommodating . Irene made a special treat for my 4 year old daughter last night...Mickey Mouse Pancakes..they were the cutest, and my daughter loved them!  My favorite is not on the menu (yes, I said they are very accommodating), but my other fav is the chopped chicken breast salad w/balsamic v.

I highly recommend The Coffee Table, I'm hooked!

I had heard good things....and admittedly the chai tea latte was yummy

HOWEVER, I came in, no hi, no hello, I stood there literally 5 mins while the 3 people behind the counter were fumbling with money, joking and talking among themselves. Finally, they said what do you want. No sorry for the wait, and a lot of attitude too.

Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere for better service and nicer people.

I've passed this place so many times, and every time, I say to myself, "I really should go there so time."  So I finally came here for breakfast with the boyfriend.  I had the egg sandwich with coffee and the bf had the denver omelette with an iced tea.  The egg sandwich was ok.  It would have been nice if the bread had been toasted, but overall the sandwich was tasty.  The breakfast potatoes were a bit undercooked.  I don't eat meat, but the bf said the denver omelette was also ok.

This place is reasonably priced and has a really good ambience.  I definitely want to check this place out again for some coffee and a pastry.  I give this place an a-ok!

I find myself in a shame spiral after having nearly devoured their Green breakfast burrito. Hot damn! It's good. It could have been served a bit hotter (temp, the spice level from the tart green chile is perfectly picante). Their Silverlake salad is well worth the price. Wish it were a little more affordable, especially since I'll be sitting there for hours.
Portions are too generous - good thing I have to hike down and up a hill to get there and back. :) Be careful not to be mowed down crossing Rowena!
This is my new neighborhood hangout. A girl's gotta grade where it's quiet, colorful, not too trendy, and the caffeine is free flowing.

    Update: from 4 stars to 2. 12/28/10

This place has turned into Silverlake Daycare.  Maybe the owner had kids and now has an open door policy for breeders, but lately when I try to go here to enjoy an adult, mildly-hungover brunch, it's like navigating my way through a Mc.Donald's Playplace. You can't swing your fork without stabbing a toddler. And while I'm all for stabbing toddlers, I like to be able to have my coffee first.

    No thanks.

Went here around 10:30 on a Sunday and the line was LONG! It took about 20 minutes for me to get to the counter, but my food was ready in about 10.

Portions are really big!!! And the coffee is good, so a good meal for me that morning.

Solid breakfast food, but nothing stellar. If I'm in the area, I'll be there!

A great Sunday brunch go-to when you're too lazy to cook, but too lazy to drive far (if you live nearby anyway)

Love the sandwiches and salads here! They always have great baked things which I want to try sometime.

They're never crazy busy, and the back patio is nice for working/studying/nursing your hangover quietly in a corner.

I am really impressed with the number of awesome coffee places in Silver Lake that I have been able to spend time in.  The Coffee Table is right up there.

What makes this place great is the large outdoor patio in the back.  There is so much room!  Inside there is a huge dining room, a front room with counter order and even a small front porch.

Their food and drinks are outstanding.  I had their Brazil coffee and it was great.

The only downside are for those who need to bring a computer to plug in.  The only outlets that work are in the front room next to the counter where you order your food.  There is a bar area with bar stools facing the front porch.  This is the only place that you can plug in at that works.

Their free internet is not available on weekends during the mid-day and they reserve the right to turn it off at any time.

I guess you can say this place isn't really computer friendly.  Otherwise for a coffee place great to check out.

I'm upgrading to 4 stars for one new item they have added.  SOYRIZO BURRITO...I had a religious experience after eating this and I'm agnostic.  All I could say was "Oh God I'm Coming".... damn was this good.  Their Turkey Pesto sandwich rocks too.   Carrot Ginger soup is about the best I've ever had in a restaurant or coffee house.

Luckily I can walk here from my home as the parking is not the greatest and you take a risk being hit by a car crossing Rowena.   They drive so damn fast on Rowena if you get hit they will find your body at Marshall High School.  So caution when crossing.

Good place for a first date.  Cozy back patio to make goo goo eyes at your trick.  If you are going to end up in the sack with your date avoid the espresso because your "coffee breath" will be so strong one blow and you can start the windmill on an old  Dutch oil painting.

I've eaten pretty much everything on the menu here. I love both locations but I must admit that I like this one a tad more... not the people, just the location. The people at the Eagle Rock location are superb. They are tops. I wish they would move over to the Silverlake location and then it would be perfect.

The items I order the most frequently are the breakfast burrito from hell and the Silverlake salad. The breakfast burrito here is just better than the Eagle Rock location. It's never drippy... they get it just right and it's a little smaller which I prefer. The salad is A+ in both locations.

The other thing I like about this location is the outdoor seating in the back. It's just a really nice place to enjoy lunch or brunch with my husband, friends, or family. I have been coming here for 7 years and I will continue to patronize this establishment well into the future... but the coffee... not that special. They should call it Salad Table... or PIE Table. Yes, the Pies are delectable.

It's nice to have a neighborhood coffee shop you can veg out at and read the whole paper. Like cover to cover. The java is good. The food is satisfying though nothing fancy. The baked goods are decent.

It's really more a place to go for the vibe. Feels like the kind of spot you'd study at in college or some group of friends in the 90's would frequent. It's great for catching up with people... in fact, you will probably catch bits of other people around you catching up with old pals as well.

The one downside is they have no wifi and there are almost no outlets for your laptop. Which adds to the retro 90's feel, but more often than not I go to coffee shops to get a little work done in a nice place and coffee table is not the place to do that. That's a bummer.

But that aside, this place is certainly a great asset to the area.

This is one of my fav spots.  It's tucked away, unnoticed by most who drive by it.  I often am there for breakfast or lunch but I noticed the place is filled with people having coffee and working on their laptops.  They have a pretty expansive menu and really good lattes and pastries, etc.

Their most special area is the back patio.  It's a large wooden deck filled with mosaic tables and a small fountain in the very back.  This place is ideal for deep conversation or just a relaxing meal.

One of my favorite spots in L.A. This place has hands down the best breakfast sandwich that I have in my life. The Sunrise Melt is a perfectly grilled egg and bacon sandwich with cheddar cheese sourdough bread. I assume one of the other ingredients must be magic or unicorn horns becaue it's that good. The side potatoes and fruit are tasty as well.

I dropped my car off at my mechanic's this morning and proceeded to walk down the street to the Coffee Table to have breakfast and Lo and Behold it was closed! The man who lived next door informed me that it had closed for good about a week ago and that the property and several other properties next to it had been sold and were going to be razed to make way for a 40 unit apartment building. Now I am all for development, but thatthat's utterly ridiculous. not only would a massive appartment complex be an eyesore and out of character with the neighborhood, isn't that area congested enough?! i can't believe that the residents of Silverlake wern't able to nix this in the bud. I am totally bummed!!

Stuck between a 3-4 star after my first visit over a drink and dinner with a couple friends.  Love that there's plenty of tables and free wi-fi, and its great that the staff are quite friendly.  But after reading rave reviews of this place, I wasn't quite as impressed with the chai latte (although still above average) but I thought my diner-type tuna melt could have been tastier.  Should've skipped the meal and just gone for drinks.

We love the coffee table since it opened 14 years ago. We would have loved it even more if there would have been organic foods and coffee but still, it was our and many other locals and non locals favorite hang out for years. Many of the neighborhood kids had their first pancakes here, countless scripts and books were discussed, business connections made and happy family Sunday were spent. The veggie burger is to die for and the staff is great.
Today we heard that a Miami developer will demolish the place, what does he care about the upset costumers? They shut if down on 9/10 !! with the plan to demolish it real rapido,  so that the community won't put up a fight like done before.
If you love the place call your councilman.

It's a totally decent place to walk to and get breakfast and coffee but covering all the outlets to prevent people from plugging in their laptops is ... slightly unfriendly. Maybe understandable, but slightly unfriendly. The wi-fi is also only available during certain select times to, again, discourage people from parking for too long. The place is pretty enormous so I'm not really sure why they take it to such extremes.

On the plus side, the electronic picture frame that they've turned into a menu is very attractive!

This is definitely a neighborhood establishment--not like the new hair salon that just opened by that name. Its classic, unpretentious, and the perfect meeting place. I've been here for business and leisure. There is a little patio in the back that is perfect refuge from the LA traffic.
I would get their: red velvet cupcake with a breakfast burrito, or their eggs from hell. One of the few places you never get sick of.

What amazes me is that this Coffee Table location has 4 stars, while the far superior Eagle Rock location has only 3,5! I'm giving this location only 2 stars, while the Eagle Rock one gets a solid, well-deserved 5 stars.

Don't get me wrong - the interior is gorgeous here and yes, that is superior to the Eagle Rock location. Gotta love the spacious back patio, which offers shade, yet a pleasant breeze and outdoor feel. Which goes to say - this place is absolutely great for coffee or drinks!

Yet the food is the reason I only came here once and never went back, even though I live on Rowena. The menu is very limited and the two dishes we had were very underwhelming - I think one of them was a burrito, but I honestly can't even remember.

Nothing but love for the Coffee Table!

Now I dont know if the coffee table is never crowded because I go for breakfast around 1 on the weekends, but I have never gone in there and had to wait in line or wait longer then 13 minutes (yeah, thats right, Im exact) for my food.

I've had the Silver Lake Omlette, Tuna Salad  &  Sandwich and everything has been great.  Actually, better then great.  The only minus is that they dont serve bread with their omlettes unless you ask for it.  But that isnt enough of minus to change my feelings for this place at all!

I noticed the other day that their cakes look like they are from Sweet Lady Janes...my apologies if Im wrong, but they look very similar and if so, then I dont have to travel all the way across town to have some good cake!

All in all, this happens to be my favorite breakfast spot within walking distance of my house (if I ever walked)

The Coffee Table is a nice cafe to either have coffee, meet a friend, have a small meeting, eat breakfast/lunch/dinner, or just relax.  Its spacious and has seating outside and inside.

They have a pretty big selection of food and I think this is a recent thing, but they serve breakfast all day now.

I only tried their coffee, red velvet cupcake, and grilled chicken sandwich so far.  Their coffee is good - not as hot as I prefer.  The sandwich was very flavorful, but not my favorite.  They keep their cupcakes in like a fridge, so its really cold and semi hard when you get it.  I don't think the food was my favorite thing here, which is why I gave a 3.  Its on the pricey side, too.  They accept credit cards, but you have to make a $5.00 minimum purchase.

They also have free wifi.  And there's plenty of street parking, too.

    I would still come again.

I love this place. I've been a patron for 7+ years now and have such fond memories of the place. I used to frequent it a lot but moved a bit out of the way, so now its a occasional spot if I'm in the area. If I rated this place on memories alone, it would be a 5 star'r fo sho!
However, I've gone twice in the past few weeks and have to admit that it's just not as great as I remember it. Now the ambiance is awesome. Great place to have coffee with a friend, or meet for a business lunch. My problem is with the coffee (nothing special) and more importantly, the food. I tried a chicken wrap that was really terrible. The chicken was dry and bland. The only thing with flavor in the wrap was the mayo... gross, right? So that was a bummer. Today I went back and had the soyrizo breakfast burrito and it was so much better than the wrap, but very greasy. Maybe better for a hangover breakfast. The one great thing I have had there recently is the pie... can't beat it.

I'm a cheesy pseudo hipster from the opposite side of the city.  Yet when I'm at Coffee Table, I feel like I'm at home :)

The back patio is phenomenal and cozy, the cupcakes are pretty good (most recently: chocolate banana for the win).  Occasionally, the staff get forgetful (one of my friends got fully caf instead of his requested decaf, and I got a latte when I asked for a mocha), but it's not enough to hold against them.

The food items are good, the community feel is palpable, and if you're lucky, on a very rare day, a bedraggled hipster from the South Bay just might be there to smile at you :-D

Mr. Tight Pants wanted to eat here, being a real hipster hangout with vegetarian options (he wants to marry the vegetarian burrito). All I wanted was to get out of the cold and fill the gas tank. Service is fairly pleasant and the colorful decor is nothing short of homey. Their light and mellow coffee warmed the soul, and made me want to kiss some fat penguins. I kissed a soyrizo breakfast burrito instead. It was so damn good; I never even wished a cow was around for a meaty threesome.

    Other notables:

Chopped chicken salad - sounds boring but surprisingly tasty with a sweet vinegar dressing
Breakfast sandwiches - awesome and filling with a side of taters
Eggs benedict - nothing to write home about; I'm pretty sure the hollandaise is pre-made
Red velvet cupcakes - good dessert but often runs out

Parking situation is horrible but love their salads, hot chocolate, and potatoes for breakfast. I love to study here. Nobody will bother me. Celebs often come here and veg too. THe patio is lovely during the spring and the patio out front is nice for people watching and catching up with old friends. It's always even nicer when I can walk here from home. The food is tasty and the portions are large. I can't say that I've ever had anything real super GREAT happen here but I can't say that I've ever had anything near bad happen here either. It's a comfy neighborhood spot.
