Whoa Rick-E. Only the pretentious could hate so fiercely (or a former V-villain who has "experienced the world" and now loathes Vville for all that it is not in comparison with bigger, faster, "crowdeder" cities)
What city is perfect? And isn't beauty found in imperfections? I'm a lover of things unique, different, ugly and yes, even the mundane (to the common eye.) I've been all over CA and the world and i've learned that Vville's beauty isn't found in the same ways that it is found in Cairo, LA or even Davis. It's a vanilla of sorts. But before you scoff at simple vanilla, think what the world would be without vanilla. Surrounded by ginger-lychee, strawberry, pistachio and jamocha almond fudge raspberry white choco swirl, vanilla is quite comforting. It's like a reset. A measure to judge others, or to be judged by, in this case.
Yes, its true that our attention was diverted as our historic landmarks were exchanged for "bigger and better", and diversity is a "big word" for some people (And I still mourn the loss of our history). But I could equally and endlessly list atrocities committed by other CA and non CA cities that I have had the fortune/misfortune of living in.
It all comes down to a matter of preference and what you define as "perfect" or "reasonable" or whatever adjective you use to say a city meets your standards.
No decent pho & roasted duck curry? maybe not the standards vville will ever live up to. its just not San Jo. sorry.
As for me, I love the imperfect. And Vville is practically imperfect in every way. Maybe it's 'cause it's my hometown or maybe 'cause I've "been there, done that", "seen one, seen them all" that makes me appreciative of my plain little home-fry. But whatever it is, Vacaville is here to stay, in all its wonderful, simple, vanilla glory.
stick that in the opinions section.
i don't know what that last dude's problem was... trying to rag on my hometown. the ville has it's drawbacks, yes. I have lived in sac and in the bay, both of which are rich in various activities, and restaurants that are available. but vacaville is a cute and quiet community nestled in our pretty hills. we have everything we need in within our few exits along the 80. it is a considerably safe place and we are smack dab in the middle of sac and the city... so we can get the best of both worlds! so there! and we have the outlets too... people come from all over just to come to our little town!

Before Border's went in, this was the largest city in California that didn't have a single bookstore. The only books for sale were at mega-chainstores. What people don't know really doesn't hurt them, I guess. History can be torn down with only minimal ripples in the Reporter's opinion section. The middling mass of Vacaville's middle class by and large only embrace hulking stucco monstrosities with freshly striped parking lots. Anything built before ten years ago is, like, so gross and blighty.
I guess that's why a place like Panera can be packed to the gills here all the time. Only in Vacaville would a Panera franchise seem like a slice of worldly culture. If Anthony Bourdain ever commits a serious crime, the judge should sentence him to stay and eat only in Vacaville. Faced with so much homogeneity, boredom, and blandness, he'd surely wanna kill himself.
Is there really a city of 100,000 without a decent bowl of pho, a curried roast duck delight, or even a ball of falafel? Are you sure that this is still California??? Even lasagne seems to be a problem for Lack of Thrill.
So deprived of standards are Vacavillians that the Wal-Mart here is ranked 3.5 stars in two reviews. Search for Wal-Mart in almost any other city: West Sac (3 reviews, 1.5 stars), Woodland (4 reviews, 1.5 stars), Vallejo (6 reviews, 1.5 stars), Sacto (8 reviews, all 1-star).
