Chocolat, Súkkulai, Cioccolato, Tsokolate, Cokolada, Schokolade... CHOCOLATE! It doesn't matter language it's in, you'll understand when you walk through the door.
When you walk into the Chocolate Bar you are hit by the smell of chocolate and coffee. It's like heaven. The store is set up in two sections. On the right you have prepared and packaged yummy goods. You can get chocolate in all shapes for all occasions. There are specialty coffees and baskets with chocolates of all types. It's a great place to get a chocolate lover something special. In the back you can watch them make some of the items through a glass wall. On the left side is the dessert bar. You can get cookies, ice cream, cakes, pies, etc... You can get something to drink with it and then have a seat at one of the many tables and enjoy your food.
The place isn't cheap, but they do make their own chocolates! We had the chocolate Tres Leches which was very good. It was recommended by the cashier and since we love Tres Leches we decided to try it! It was very good and the bottom was sitting in milky goodness. The top was a little too much like chocolate frosting. We also tried the chocolate and yellow cake called "Any Day Cake". It was very good, layers of chocolate and yellow cake alternating in 4 layers. The frosting was quite sweet. I think the single (large) piece was about $6.50.
Together the two of us ate most of the Tres Leches but not even 1/2 of the other cake. If you come here, you'll often leave with dessert for a few days from the left overs.
If you love chocolate this is the place for you. It's a great place to meet friends for dessert just be patient with the lack of parking. You'll need to park on one of the streets and walk.
Second time around now for the Chocolate Bar, this time choosing to stay with their homemade/house desserts: Pumpkin Cheesecake ($6.95), Aunt Etta's Chocolate Cake ($9.95) and a Junkyard Cookie:
Ate the Junkyard cookie there on the spot, and it was good. It was tasty, but not OMG!!!!
Pumpkin Cheesecake--Very smooth with a light/fluffy mousse and a nice pumpkin taste. Good, but wouldn't order/make a special trip there because I was 'craving' it.
Aunt Etta's Chocolate Cake-- VERY good, moist and chocolaty. Worth $10??--probably not, but very tasty cake overall....

I have been stalking the Chocolate Bar's website for over a week now, in anticipation of coming… Read more »
My name is Andrew and I'm a chocoholic.
It all started so innocently. My first job was in a chocolate shop similar to The Chocolate Bar, selling everything from truffles to fudge to exotic chocolate bars from around the world and ice cream and candy and...hold on...just...had...to catch...my breath.
Whew. A little too excited there.
When I first started working there, we were encouraged to "sample" the products so we knew what we were selling. The first time was free. But shortly thereafter the freebies stopped coming and we had to PAY for the chocolate and since it was the best, we couldn't stomach just any old chocolate but how were we supposed to afford this FREAKIN EXPENSIVE chocolate on our piddly little minimum wage salary ARRGHHH!! That's how they hook you.
I did many things I'm not proud of to support my habit. I sold my bronze baby shoes, my VHS collection, I even sold myself. Sometimes I would talk people into buying the most expensive chocolates in the store and run out the back when they left, watching, waiting, and then pouncing when they came around the corner. Suckers never knew what hit em.
I also started stealing from the store. Not very often, maybe one truffle a week would hold me over. At first. Then one truffle just wouldn't do it. I kept taking more and more until I was found passed out in the basement underneath a pile of chocolate bar wrappers covered almost head to toe in chocolatey goodness.
That was rock bottom for me. From that point on I vowed to lead a chocolate free life. I had been chocolate free for 15 years. Until I found The Chocolate Bar. With all of their 4-layer, foot high cakes and delicious truffle or espresso pies, I didn't stand a chance. I broke down and ordered a dozen truffles and chocolate covered strawberries along with a bag of chocolate covered pretzels and coffee beans while eating a big ass ice cream. I even picked up some treats for the mutt. Yes they have dog treats too.
I'll admit I was on a bit of a bender on Saturday night (yes, they stay open late!) and may have freaked them out a bit. In my sugar induced rampage, I lambasted them for not carrying fudge. They kindly referred me to Chocolat Du Monde and I'm sure they breathed a huge sigh of relief when I tore off in that direction. Little did I know Chocolat du Monde was not open at midnight and I'd have to wait until Sunday to satisfy my fudge fix.
All hope may not be lost yet though. I take solace in the fact that their parking sucks. That's the only chance I stand against this beast. Please pray for me.
One of my favorite dessert places. My most recent favorite there is the pumpkin cheesecake. Delicious!!!
One of my favorite places in Houston.
My husband doesn't like sweets but he enjoys the Snowberry ice cream. It's not too sweet. It seems like it's a vanilla based ice cream with bits of strawberry and dark chocolate. YUM!
Tuxedo cheesecake - a slice of heaven! It really tastes like a cloud. The cheesecake is whipped yet rich at the same. It's not your typical firm/dense cheesecake. It's marbled with chocolate cheesecake. Delicious!
Toffee coffee ice cream - another one of my favorites. You will definitely need to drink some water to clear the thickness of the chocolately coffee ice cream with chunks of toffee.
A small serving of ice cream is two scoops. I typically get 2 different flavors in a small ice cream. Great satisfaction for $2.95.
Their mochas espressos are also full of flavor, but on the sweet side.
They used to have a live band every Tuesday, but I am not sure if they do anymore. If you're going at a popular hour, like an evening on the weekend, don't expect to find parking right in front of the shop.
For your bargain hunters: time it right after a holiday. You can find discounted chocolates ranging from 25-75% off -- depending on the excess and the holiday.
I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of Chocolate in general...I just don't have that gene or those tastebuds... But, my dog loves the carob dog treats from The Chocolate Bar, so I made a trek over to W. Alabama today to pick up some Biscuits for Biscuit!
During my visit, I perused the offerings. I was SHOCKED by the prices. $1.95 for one chocolate covered pringle? $10 for 4 "turtles"?!? Then, I spotted my weakness, caramel and chocolate covered pretzels. I purchased two...for a total bill of $16. That's right...10 milkbones with sprinkles and two pretzels were $16. My friend ordered a piece of chocolate cake for $10...ugh.
The pretzels were good, but not $4 good and I think it's time to reconsider my dog's lifestyle!
What can I say, I'm not that crazy about chocolate but somehow I keep coming back . . . I don't have a problem!
It simple - you walk in, take a deep breath, and prepare yourself for the biggest variety of chocolate you will ever see in Houston. I didn't know it was possible to get drunk off chocolate, but apparently I was wrong.
What makes this place special is that every, I mean every dessert in the entire building is made of some kind of chocolate. Whether you want to believe it or not, its true. I would go down this list but I don't want to sound like Bubba from Forest Gump. Oh and yes, they do have ice cream and cake. =)
Bottom Line: If you are a chocolate enthusiast then this place is for you . . . if you are not, let someone who is force you into coming and enjoy yourself anyway.
This place is adorable! I was overwhelmed by the amount of different chocolate goodies they offered here, and wished I could try everything. However, we were on a limited budget and had just finished a very filling lunch at Pasha, a Turkish place nearby, so we opted to split a small slice of cake.
The guy recommended the Black Russian cake and the Turtle Torte, which both looked amazing. I secretly craved the pecans on top of the torte, but saw that my friend was eyeing the Black Russian. I gave in, said we would take the Black Russian, and sat down at the nearest empty booth. I felt a wave of giddiness rise up from my throat as I dug in.
The first bite was moist, chocolate-y, and fluffy. The fluffiness came from the chocolate mousse in the middle, and the moistness came from the cake itself, which sandwiched the mousse on the top and bottom. I have to admit that it was almost too chocolate-y, which I thought I'd never say since I am a huge chocoholic. We finished shortly, drank our glass of water, and left. The Chocolate Bar is quite pricey (6.95 for a regular-sized slice of cake??) but yummy overall. I can't wait to come back here, but perhaps when I have more money in my sadly deflated wallet.
The variety and selection of chocolate decadence is great. HOWEVER
In my opinion, a $6.00 slice of cake ought to feed two people, and the other day I purchased a slice of the Bayou Mousse (delicious) but was grossly dissatisfied at my wimpy slice. To make matters worse, in a weak attempt to disguise my disgraceful slice of mousse, the server COVERED the sides of the plate in whipped cream.
I'm hoping there was a new server behind the counter that was having a bad night. Needless to say, I will stick to eating cakes from EMPIRE CAFE, where they are always delightful and cut properly, and I will get my chocolate I-Scream freak on at the Chocolate Bar.
Do: buy their icecream and chocolate truffles.
Don't: waste your time on the overpriced, undersliced cakes.
I can't believe I have written a review of the Chocolate Bar yet. I have been coming in for awhile now to get the ice cream. Really the small serving is all that's needed. When I first started going I tried a little of everything--even a serving of the multi- layered cake, it looks a little better than it tastes, but the chocolate pie is wonderful especially with a cold coke--sugar coma--inducing. They used to give out samples, I wonder what happened to that, I guess this ended around the time the cool guy with the cyborg shocking boots left. The treats are very expensive so it's a good place to go, but not an everyday occasion. I usually stay out of the candy case, but I love all of the different kinds of chocolate covered marshmallow goodies, now if I can only find a good place to buy candy apples that is close by. That is one major thing missing from this goody store.
The ice cream is good. Not mind blowing but totally acceptable in the ice cream community.
My reason for this review is the milk chocolate which is the real star of the show. I like the chocolate bar with toffee pieces in it. It is so smooth tasting and flavorful. Once it starts to melt in your mouth it becomes creamy. Yeah baby.
Chocolate, Chocolate. Humongous four or five layer cakes. Chocolate covered twinkies, rice crispies, you name it. Also have icecream. My wife had a brownie, and was so rich we ate it for the next two weeks, bite by bite!
Of course I went back for more ice cream! and I still like it a lot. I tried different flavors this time, I believe it was German chocolate and Creamy Dreamy Truffle (uhm.. craving ice cream right now!) Must I really tell you how creamy and delicious my ice cream was? Fine, if you insist: "My ice cream was creamy and Delicious!!!. :0)
This time parking was a little annoying. We had to park far since parking is so limited there. I also wasn't happy with the "outdoor" sitting as there is not really any space to sit without blocking people's path. Also, there was a lady smoking outside and seriously, must you do it while I eat ice cream? We left and finished our ice cream while walking to the car. Next time I will take my ice cream to go. I only took one star away because although is so cramped in that little space, it is still a great place to satisfy your sweet tooth! :)

Estrogen. I went to check out The Chocolate Bar after seeing many positive reviews. Little did I know I would be checking out all the ladies there. The place was filled with women. This is what heaven must be like for them. Sweet goods. Chocolate covered everything. Cakes. Delicious drinks. All overpriced. What does it matter to them? Their fathers, brothers, husbands, boyfriends, sugar daddys, and boys on short leashes probably pay for all these indulgences anyways. :).
Workers are very friendly. Atmosphere seems fun. Parking is limited in the private lot and in the street. 4 stars for the lovely ladies.
As far as I'm concerned chocolate is a girl's best friend.
So... First things first... I drive all they way from Pasa-get-down-dena into Houston to go to The Chocolate Bar. So I have plenty of time to try and figure out what I want to order... I do know that what ever it is... It must have chocolate. When I get there... I am looking at all the chocolate goodness... and it hits me... WHAT AM I GONNA GET?! My friend is looking at me like... "are you serious... it is really taking you this long to decide?" I think it took me about 10 minutes to FINALLY pick one dessert. Come one people... they have a HUGE selection, and this is a very important decision. So, my choice ended up being the Oreo pie. I know... not much chocolate... but it looked oh so yummy! My friend went with the Mississippi Mud pie.
We waited and waited for what seemed like hours to get our pies... of course it was probably only a few minutes... but when you are waiting on something like that... it is like waiting on Christmas. We finally get our pies and I dive in. OMG!!! It was like a little slice of heaven. It was prepared just right. It tasted even better than it looked. I had to try my friends Mississippi Mud pie, but it was NO where near as good as mine... so I was happy that I had made the right choice.
After we devoured out pies we went to the other side to check out the goodies. I ended up walking out with something called Texas Fritos Mix. (Or something like that.) I am so glad I picked it up because I forgot to make a snack for the super bowl party I was invited to and was able to take that. It was sooo good that it didn't last very long at all. The combination of sweet and salty works great together.
Quite legitimately this place is heaven.
mmmm sweet decadent deliciousness in every form imaginable, this place is chocoholic heaven!! Honestly the hardest decision I've had to make all day was what to order here!! In the end i settled on a slice of the turtle torte... mmm a chocolate chesecakey confection drizzled with caramel sauce in the perfect serving size... MASSIVE!!!
If you have a whole mouth of sweet teeth give the $10 a slice cake a go - I personally would find it a challenge to finish something almost as big as my head but I'd sure give it my best shot and I know that every single bite would be pure unadulterated bliss!!
After reading Shefali's review on Chocolate Bar's hot chocolate, I was convinced that I needed to give the hot coco a try.
I went to Chocolate Bar and tried their 12oz hot chocolate and I divulged in what I recall as, luxury chocolate madness. This is the tastiest and richest hot chocolate I've ever had in my life!
I returned the following day (today) and ordered myself another 12oz hot coco, because by this time I'm hooked! My day at the spa could not be complete without this hot coco. It is addicting!
On yesterday's visit I was greeted and promptly helped by a cheerful lady who visited with me and helped my purchase of Valentines Day's goodies. Today's visit I was clearly the only patron in there and I was ignored. That is why I am giving them 3 stars. I called a couple times for help and was unnoticed, I waited a good 15 minutes until I was acknowledged. If I was promptly helped, I would have given them 4 stars.
I will return again in hopes of another cheerful and friendly helpful staff and of course to die for hot chocolate orgasmic madness.
Dear Hot Chocolate,
GET IN MAH BELLLAAAAAAY!
For serious, the hot chocolate here is amazing. It's sold in two sizes: a 4oz. "shot" and the standard 12 oz. size. Closet Fatty (moi) got the 12oz., my fiance got the 4oz., and we shared a brownie. I would say the highlight was the hot chocolate! You can get it with whipped cream or marshmallows (or both!). I would say stick with the 4oz, because I couldn't even get through half of my 12oz hot chocolate.
The brownie was also excellent, but I'm the kind of person who can only take one sweet at a time, so I couldn't fully appreciate the warm gooeyness. This place serves coffee with unlimited refills, so I might hit that up next time and try one of the other delicious looking cakes/pastries. The servers were sweet, even though my fiance and I took FOREVER to order. We were just so awestruck with the amount of chocolate in front of us!
I can't wait to go in the summer to try the ice cream. The frozen hot chocolate also sounds intriguing...
OMG..its good. I love this place..chocolate everything in anything shapr or form you can imagine. great family crowd and friendly service.
There may be limited parking but it is sooo worth the drive to The Chocolate Bar. The desserts are to die for! Expensive but worth every dollar. I always get the mint chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake for my husband, and a couple carob doggie biscuits for my two dogs. I suggest going here for your "chocolate fix".
Really Rocky Road Ice Cream? Mmmmmmmmmmm my fave! I also like the Chocolate Malt and German Chocolate but Really Rocky Road is thee best.
First time here, my bf and I shared the Bayou City Mud Pie.. I have to say, if you're going to get one of their desserts - milk is probably a necessity. It was good but too much for the both of us.
It's always a treat to go here and I can't wait to go to the one in Rice Village!
I've been in Houston less then 2 weeks and have been to Chocolate Bar four times. Yes, my jeans still zip, barely. Should I use some common sense when I'm in here? Of course not. It's just not that kind of place.
I never can decide what kind of ice cream, so end up with the 4 scoop serving size. Last year when in Houston, candylicious junkyard ice cream was my fave flavor - this year it's coffee toffee chocolate time. No wait, it's the creamy dreamy truffle or no, maybe it's root beer float white chocolate. All are just soooooooo good.
Next time I go which is probably as soon as I finish typing this, I'm getting one of those giant pieces of cake that cost about 10 bucks a slice - the one I'm currently fantasizing about is Uncle Daryl's chocolate cake with a side of ice cream and junkyard cookies to go. I can't wait. I'm on my way as it closes in less then an hour. This time I'm trying the new location - it's closer.
HOH. LEE. CRAP. I think I just died and went to heaven...a cocoa flavored heaven. And I don't mind one bit!
You know this place means business when you open the door and you're practically confronted with the scent of chocolate--that's how potent this place is. EVERYTHING is chocolate. Chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, chocolate pizza (really!) hot chocolate, truffles, chocolate-dipped cookies (Nutter Butters, Oreos and Mint Milanos encased in chocolate), chocolate-covered popcorn, and chocolate bars (of course). Though prices are a bit steep, the quality is definitely there to justify it. And they do custom orders, so if you have a wedding or business event coming up, this might be a place you'd like to consider for unique favors. The space is also available for private parties, which would be a really sweet treat for a corporate event.
And the ice cream counter--ahhh, the ice cream counter! My first few visits I didn't even notice it was here, but it's probably the crown jewel of the place. The Cape Cod Crunch is amazing--chocolate ice cream base (of course) with walnuts and cranberries. I like all of those things separately and was wary of trying them together, but they work. SPLENDIDLY. Don't let your eyes fool you--you don't need anything bigger than the smallest size. It's so rich, you'll be begging for help just to finish the two scoops!
This place is a little slice of heaven on earth. With Candylicious right next door, it's an easy to feel like a kid again going giddy over the selection of sweets.
Prices were high for the quality, typical for a gimmicky place like this. Not where you want to go for high-quality gourmet chocolate, more like a fun candy store to browse. I did enjoy the "Texas frito brittle" but the Fritos were pretty darn stale.
If I was in the mood for a good dessert, I probably wouldn't come here. But if I was out shopping with a group of ladies or with my nephews who don't know the difference, I'd probably check out the ice cream.
CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!! NNNNNN GOOD!!!! OH YEAH!!!! GIVE IT TO ME!!!!!!
Really not much here for a gluten free, veggie guy other than chocolate covered fruits, nuts, and anything else GF with chocolate on it.
The kids and I like to drop by for the various chocoate infused ice creams (yes, I know it's frozen moo juice) after I force them to become more culturally rounded on free family days at MFAH. That and a quick stop at Candylicious next door makes the enriching experience that much sweeter....(get it, sweeter, enriching - I'm just too clever tonight!).
HOWEVER...I would like to see more simple, dark chocolate bars and turbo truffles...you just can't beat 95% cocoa solids chocolate bars or espresso bean extract infused chocolately confections without breaking a few narcotics laws...can you? ...and what good is a chocolate shop without a chocolate fountain, chocolate churning machine, or grossly oversized chocolate bars, eh...c'mon!
Colorful decor, somewhat attentive staff, great place to bring a chocolate junkie...I've just been to many chocolate outposts, and this one just doesn't blow my mind...for Houston, it'll do for now, but they could do better.
I'm totally in LOVE!!! Yes that's right you heard me...I'M IN LOVE with chocolate that is (no offense to the boyfriend, I love him too)!
This place is a chocoholics dream and nightmare at the same time. As soon as you walk in your senses are put into overdrive taking in the smells of all the chocolate concoctions and the sights of some amazing dessert artistry. I always start with the candy section just to check things out and see what my money can buy or what my sweet tooth can handle is more like it. Everything from the bricks of chocolate to the chocolate covered Twinkies makes my mouth water. Can you tell I love chocolate?
After making mental notes of what I should buy next time I stop by, I make my way over to the ice cream section and look to see what flavors they have even though by now I pretty much know which ones I want, but hey it doesn't hurt to sample a few more just to make sure I choose the right one or ones I should say. Next stop is the cake section. For the most part this is where all my money goes to. I usually pick up two slices one to eat there and one to take home. I know, I know...it sounds like a lot but don't worry I don't eat all of it in one sitting (*wink wink). With each bite of their desserts comes this ultimate satisfaction and a smile comes to my face and I'm filled with joy (also 500+ calories...OMG!!!).
Nothing washes it down better than a cup of their hot chocolate or a frozen chocolata. These are a must try...Party In the Mouth (get your minds out of the gutter...not that kind of party...gross!!!)
Always a good day at The Chocolate Bar!
The hot chocolate at this place is CRAZY! It's like a cup filled with three melted chocolate bars. It's like drinking pure liquid chocolate. If I had known that before I ordered one, I probably would have had a quarter cup. That was the richest sweetest thickest chocolatiest drink I had ever had. And to make it richer, it even had marshmallows on top!
If you like chocolate, you'll probably love it, but consider splitting it with somebody until you know what to expect. It was actually a bit too much for me and made me feel kind of sick, but not necessarily in a bad way... it was an experience.
I LOVEEEEEEEE this place. Willie Wonka has nothing on this establishment. There are only a few things that truly get me excited, and The Chocolate Bar makes the list!
Go, Go, Go....get some chocolate!
If you like sweets, you will be in heaven as soon as you open the door.
...but if you go with someone, and you plan on enjoying dessert there, have them be the look out for a seat.
We went on a Friday night, after 9, and we could barely move around.
That place is PACKED!
I understood why.
uh... YUMMMMMMM
I had the Tollhouse pie. Delicious!
Everything looked great and I wish I could have taken a bite of each dessert.
The down side of this place...
They need to get a larger store! It was way too packed.
They only had one unisex bathroom. It was extremely clean...but the line was extremely long.
They sell a lot of novelties too...so check them out online.
I definitely want to go again! ...I'll try an afternoon this time.
It's not The Chocolate Bar's fault.
There used to be a flower shop on Westheimer (now closed, natch) that also sold hand made truffles. $2 a pop truffles. It was the first time in my life I'd experienced high-end chocolate and there was no going back. I'd stop by for a 4-pack: mojito dark chocolate, habanero dark chocolate, key lime white chocolate, single origin chocolate truffles, etc.
So when I heard about The Chocolate Bar, I had to go. I walked in and saw various chocolate things in gift boxes and they were clever, but not special. I went up to the case to look for truffles and saw chocolate dipped prezels and Oreos and orange slices. I was like, Are you effing kidding me? This is what the amazing Chocolate Bar has? I bought the liqueur-filled chocolates as a gift, but they melted.
And I went back occasionally with friends, but I didn't have love for them. Their ice cream is okay, but I prefer Amy's flavor selection. And for that matter, I'd rather go to Whole Foods and get a pint of Talenti gelato.
And then. THEN I had their hot chocolate. Aside from being every other kind of snob, I'm a hot chocolate snob. In our pantry at home we have Vosges, Dagoba and Ghiradelli. So if you're going to claim to have awesome hot chocolate, you'd better be on your game.
And they were. I skipped the shot and straight up ordered the 12oz. And drank the whole thing. I want to marry that hot chocolate and have its little chocolate babies.
I can't recommend the other stuff there, but the hot chocolate is so good I'm giving them 4 stars. I also can't fault them for not being what *I* want them to be. If you love all things chocolate, then by all means go! If you don't consider yourself a chocoholic but will lie prostrate in front of a fine ganache, then get the hot chocolate and skip the rest.
P.S. It's not The Chocolate Bar's fault my liqueur truffle things melted. It's mine for driving to Dallas with them in the trunk. I just said it for effect.
P.P.S. WHERE can I get high-quality truffles in this city??
Cakes are outrageously priced ($10 a slice?!) and are waaay too sweet. Cloying. I've gotten sick from their smores cake. Not impressed.
However, the ice cream is a different story. The dark chocolate ice cream is incredible - like eating a frozen truffle. I've only allowed myself to get it a few times (and always split with someone), not because I'm a pansy and can't physically eat it, but its just so decadent that a small is plenty for two.
They also cross the line with their doggy treats. Its a dog, they lick themselves, they don't care about your insanely priced dog treats.
I like the chocolate bar... its got real charecter and charm to it. There are insane amounts of heavy chocolates that you can try and of course buy.
There is soo much chocolate you start to lose your mind!
This is really a great place if you got the stomach for it. There are things there that make you feel like your heart stopped. It's so heavy and delicous and as an added bonus there is a nifty lil candy shop next door.
but my biggest complaint is the prices at this place... the owners realize they've got a really good thing going so they feel like they can charge whatever they want...
Hello. My name is Fatima. And I'm a chocoholic.
Seriously though, this place is AWESOME for sitting down w/friends getting a slice of chocolate cake + ice cream. Mixing them and eating!!! mmmmmm.
They have cute little chocolate gifts (not a huge selection like in Fisherman's Wharf in SF). I haven't tried any of them, but maybe I will next time. I'm not sure though, b/c for my regular chocolate that I eat (not in cake or ice cream form), I'm pretty snobby and it should be pretty good.
Cute decor too.
If your eating healthy I'd advice on not going in because there is not a healthy option on the menu here! They have everything chocolate! Chocolate letters, coins, ice-cream, cookies, cake, truffles, and much more.
I think this would be a great place to take someone an a date. There is usually someone playing some kind of instrument in the corner, plenty of places to sit, and at least 10 people in there at a time so there won't be any silent awkward moments!
I definitely suggest getting the mint chocolate ice cream flavor with crushed up Thin Mint cookies in it. Although it is only available when Girl Scout cookies are being sold :(
Chocolate bar is across the street from me (no stalkers please), so everyone always asks me if I'm there everyday. And truthfully I'm not. It's expensive and somewhat of a novelty act, but it can be a nice little outing.
They make everything in house, and have everything from chocolate covered fruits, to chocolate pizzas. I usually opt for the chocolate peanut butter ice cream, after I have sampled every other flavor of course. Beware of the chocolate cake!! It's a massive slice, at a massive price of $9! Ouch!
One time I ventured over and walked in on a speed dating event. Let me tell you, that was awkward. Not only was it a speed dating event, but it was a Jewish speed dating event! One of the guys ended up wandering over to us telling us how awful it was... I could see why.
They also have 3 man bands play on some evenings. Outdoor seating is also available. The parking is very limited but their is street parking available, and I always see people parking at Divino's across the street.
Two words: ICE CREAM. Having grown up in Switzerland, I'd like to consider myself a connoisseur of fine chocolate. Or, at the very least, a fat ass with a weak spot for the stuff.
This place has a bunch of great items - great gift ideas - but the killer here is their ice cream. Deep, rich and very, very sinful. I think they make it out of silk bikini-clad Swiss milkmaid/confisseur hotties. I am not a huge fan of their other confections, but I'm sure they're fine for the average joe.
And yes, this is probably the most obscure review I've written so far. But I am in a chocolate coma, so fully excusable. Go here. Eat chocolate ice cream.
For my chocolate-loving girlfriend, this place is a sort of Heaven in Montrose. I, too, shared the joy of literally and figuratively being a kid in a candy shop at this dessert gallery. Eventually, we settled on some sort of sinful mud pie and milk (I just never thought I'd order milk anywhere), and it was pretty amazing, though carried a hefty price tag at around $10 for both items.
It was an overall very pleasant experience. Parking can get a little tricky and the place is crowded even at 10 PM so that really takes some wind out of the sails. I forgot to mention that all the employees we came in contact with were very friendly and helpful.
A well-run establishment, to say the least. We'll be back to contract diabetes in the near future.
You might have to be able to beat Bruce Boggtrotter (read R. Dahl's 'Matilda' for this character) in a chocolate cake eating contest to do The Chocolate Bar justice. This was to be stop #3 on my drive down W. Alabama Street trail in Houston, and it delivered the KO punch. (First was to be Breakfast Klub--line too long on SAT AM, Second was Menil Collection--great brain candy of surrealism).
And The Chocolate Bar itself packs a 1-2 combination of decadent chocolate cakes as well as variations of home-made ice creams.
Here's the play-by-play of how this challenger surrendered on the first bite of Black Russian cake. My plan of attack was ice cream first, cake later. Without reinforcements--family and friends nearby to share the portions--it was almost a kamikaze sortie.
The ice cream selections were Cape Cod Crunch (CCC) and Peachy Keen (PK). The CCC was one of the better original flavor recipes I've had this summer--chocolate ice cream base with dried cranberries, almond chunks, and chocolate shavings--not overly sweet and a great combination. The PK captured the subtle peach of summer and matched it with dark and white chocolate. Go for the large portion--good value, reward yourself. This experience alone qualifies for the Transcontinental Ice Cream Safari.
After winning that round, it was on to the double espresso to clear and prepare the palate for the cake. The staff knows how to use the machines. Ceramic cups might have been best, but who's complaining--not me.
Take your time to select the cake that you want to challenge. Try not to fall victim of the pleasantly distracting decor--lots of eye candy to reward visually. On to that cake -- The Black Russian is a mousse center with a brownie-like base. The top casing is nearly dark chocolate fudge. The presentation is excellent, with a drizzle of chocolate syrup, and an added garnish of black and white chocolate covered espresso beans. (Staff obliged with a take away box, which survived the air-conditioned car trip back down Alabama St. to my hotel.)
My recommendation is still to take a friend (or two or three) to share this experience--otherwise going solo is sinful enough to approach a bad 'drinking alone' habit....
And extra keyboard strokes to thank Houston yelpers for leading me here. I'd never have found it otherwise. You all set my expectations appropriately high.
PS - for you canine aficionados out there...The Chocolate Bar does excellent dog treats and gift varieties for that member of your family. Be sure to pick up a "vet approved" box of treats.
The latest reviews for this place are so good I can't help but think if maybe I got the wrong thing? I had the chocolate covered s'more and a slice of the Flan-tastic pie (flan covered with chocolate).
Of course, chocolate is always sweet and delicious, but at a place called The Chocolate Bar, where all the chocolates and cakes are made on-site, I definitely expected a bit more. The cake was not as decadent as I was expecting, and the flan caramel center was imperceptible amid heavy heavy layers of chocolate. Also, I was sad to find out that, instead of melt-in-my-mouth chocolate, the cake and s'more offered it jawbreaker style. Man on man I wish I had gone with the hot chocolate everyone loves so much.
Last thing: with a name like The Chocolate Bar, I was kinda expecting an upscale-looking bar, but for chocolate. Instead, this place seems much more designed towards the kids and pre-teens, and lacking the sophistication I expected from a place as original as this. And the cake served on a purple Dixie plate on a black serving tray with two plastic forks really didn't help much.
