This is a great local hangout. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating and it's a nice relaxed atmosphere. It's also open in the winter, which is a big plus for Shelter Island. Be sure to check out Burger Night! My fav is the California burger.

I love food but I lurve atmosphere! Raving about The Chequit is easy for me because it's got both. Let's start in the obvious place, the arrival: a late-afternoon promenade through the beautiful Greenport waterfront, past the historic piers, the window shops and the antique ferris wheel. Then you hop on the Shelter Island Ferry as a foot passenger: $2 each way. Now you're literally floating as the sun begins to dip, adding pastel colors to the coastlines you are sandwiched between. After the 5 minute ferry journey you climb a short but steep hill to earn the extended decadence in which you are about to indulge and the view that the hike affords. There are multiple floors and seating areas and a bar room. I recommend sitting as high as possible and, if not outside, then at least in view of the inlet.
My family and family friends make the pilgrimage once a year for an annual celebration. I also took my ex-girlfriend here for Valentine's Day one year. The vive has never been short of elegant and the food has been consistently good. The menu may be a bit more ambitious than the result but fortunately the prices match the latter. Here's 6 words that make me happy as an East End restaurant-goer: local seafood, local produce, local wine!
I like the food but it's the experience that keeps me coming back, forever ever - until I can't climb the hill. -

When I'm vacationing or spending the day in Shelter Island I usually by pass The Chequit Inn for food because, well it's a hotel and hotel food can be sub standard at times, but Chequit Inn really changes my outlook in this area.
I had the Turkey sandwich which was excellent as well as the Grilled Octopus salad. Wife had New England Clam Chowder and Goat Cheese Salad which were both equally as good. I ll be back for sure. Also service was great. -

Something about this place reminds me of the few months after I finished college when I had a job as a server at a pretentious Yacht Club on the North Shore of Long Island. However, there is nothing pretentious about Chequit. Good beer on tap (Blue Point, Harbor, etc), friendly bartenders, plenty of indoor/outdoor seating and to top it off live music.
The couple of times I've been to this Shelter Island hang out I've had a great time. I particularly enjoy that it never gets unbearably loud so you're still able to hold a conversation.

I wish the bathroom stalls had doors. I'm not a fan of the whole shower curtain thing that they've got going on.Listed in: It's Beer Thirty...!, Long Island Gems

We just spent the weekend at the Chequit Inn and had the chance to have a breakfast, and lunch here.
The breakfast was just a normal Continental, so nothing special.
The lunch on the other bad was kinda bad. We had reserved a space for 15 of us to celebrate our grandmothers 90th birthday. The place only gave us one server, and unfortunately he was just not good enough to handle that large of a group. Most of our food was cold because by the time he served the first few people, and went back to get the rest of the food it was cold. I had the Clam Chowder and it was horrible. Luckily I also go the Tuna Sandwich, which was ok. -

Went here Sunday night after a nice day at Crescent beach. It was the opposite of the loud crowded scene at Sunset Beach and exactly what we were looking for.
Right away the waiter offered to seat us away from the 8 top of screaming kids which was a great sign. Great food, mojitos and service. Low key atmosphere, all outdoor seating. Would definitely return. -

We had a late dinner at the Chequit on a Friday night. The atmosphere was delightful and the service was charming and energetic. The setting, overlooking Dering Harbor, is fabulous, and the tables are placed so that each has a separate and private feeling and conversation flourishes. The quality of the food, however, was mixed. Some of us were very happy with our meals, especially the lobster ravioli and the crab cakes, and the dragon's eye sushi appetizer was very good. There seems to be a lot of effort put into presentation (everything was very beautiful on the plate) but the flavors were sometimes too bland or too heavy handed. The clam chowder was uninspiring and wasn't hot, the tuna was overwhelmed with cilantro (don't chefs know that scientists have shown that there is a genetic element in taste for cilantro and a fairly large percentage of the population finds it really unpleasant?) and the chicken was fine, but unremarkable. The fingerling potatoes that were served with the chicken were indistinguishable from the chicken; It had gotten fairly dark and I couldn't tell which item on the plate was potato. My daughter also reminded me that the last time we were there (about 2 years ago), for lunch, I ordered a lobster salad that had been overpoweringly seasoned with some kind of flavored vinegar and was completely inedible. We were also surprised that they don't make espresso drinks, just regular coffee.
Having said all that, we really did have a lovely evening. Vine Street, the local competition which has amazing food, can't hold a candle to the atmosphere and service at the Chequit. Also, the twenty-somethings in our party stayed on after dinner in the bar and had a really fun time "dancing the night away" and hanging out on the terrace. -

The country clubesque Chequit (Chee-quit) also has a restaurant and full bar. Dining is available in the main building or out on the sprawling porch. It seems the menu is mouthwatering and thorough. Critics have given it favorable reviews. The bar is located down in the basement and has a slight REDRUM "The Shining" quality but whatevs. I was haunted by the Blueberry Stoli martini and Kir Royale. Said martini had cream and fresh blueberries. Appetizers from the restaurant are available-burgers are apparently very good. According to a local, the bar is one of the best (from the painfully few to choose from) on the island. As a whole I would rate it a 3, but I grant 1 extra star as far as competition in the area goes.

Having grown up on the island you have to love this place for what it was..... what it is and what it provides. It is the local pub for all the kids (and grown-up kids) to get absolutely intoxicated after a long day at the beach / golf course or whatever water activities are of the moment all while knowing one another. It can be loud and fun.... just warning you!
