One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Yes, yes, I've gone to this bar, even before it was renovated and re-named The Chalet. *scratches head* How do I sell my support for this place without coming across, um, excited? I'm not THAT about the place. I'm just sold, real convinced. So look, there's that word, real.
Seems to me (real people here, at your service) there's many ways to be real, here's hoping this qualifies:
The Chalet is in an appealing neighborhood and has Cool People, Unique Environment, Solid Drinks At A Fair Price, Everything You Look For In a Pub or Bar. Every.Single.Thing. Did I say single? Didn't reeal-y mean it that way. Couples a-plenty, even bring your whole team with you, no one would mind a bit.
Aim for happy times, five smiles, a smile for every star. :-) :-} :-} :-) ;-)
My early review of The Black Boar (formerly The Chalet), with low-resolution grainy pics and thoughts on the passage of time:
http://octopusg.blogsp...
They seem to have kept the bartenders and the jukebox (*phew*). As for the other changes -- I'm withholding judgment for the time being.
R.I.P Chalet.
You were my favorite bar in L.A. I drove all the way from West L.A. to see you. Of all the disappointing things in life, you were never one of them.
I'm pouring out a strong glass of whiskey in your honor. You deserved a better death then this. To be gutted and turned into a half-assed, piss-poor imitation of a UK pub complete with cheap boar's heads mounted on the wall is no way to honor what a special place you were.
Dearest owners, I hope you are reading this. If so, I shake my fists at you. I will never visit your crap establishment. You took something special and ruined it. You are the bar version of GI Joe the movie. If you go out of business, it was entirely your own horrendous decisions that brought about your ruin.
Goodbye, Chalet. Thanks for the memories.
The hipsters first came for Silver lake, and I didn't speak up because I didn't live in Silver Lake.
And then they showed up in the Los Feliz area, and I didn't speak up because I couldn't give a rats ass about Los Feliz.
And then the hipsters moved into Atwater Village, and I didn't speak up because.. well, I only cared about 55 Degree wine and Big Foot was already hipster enough.
And then.. they started moving into Eagle Rock.. and by that time there wasn't any where else to go east. Cause really, Pasadena? Not gonna let you hipsters move in, folks. And really, you don't want to move to arcadia. That's all family places and a nice area to raise kids (Voted by the nation)
I find it odd that the flow of hipsterness flows to the east. Or so it seems. You have the Silverlake hipster fade traveling towards Atwater village and now it's seeping into Eagle Rock.
The Chalet is the prime example of this. It's not quite to the ketchy level of Big Foot Lodge just two towns over, but it's still pretty interesting in its own rite. I'd say that this is a Big Foot Lodge lite. So if the amount of hipsters over at BF is bothering you, there might be fewer here on a given night.. at least for now.
Frankly, it's a nice place to relax with a pint and there's always something decent playing. In an area that is pretty chill as it is, this fits in perfectly.
Def. should be added to your list of hip places to get a drink. It's a great place to strike up a conversation with other interesting cats there.
Please NO! Say it isn't so!!
I just heard a terrible rumor that this place is going to close down and turn into a British Pub?!!? What the hell is that all about! This place is perfect just the way it is! I know this because I was just there again last night and had a total blast basking in the swoony, cool vibe and enjoyed myself tremendously! That also could have had something with the very full glass of Johnny Walker Black and the company, but still, this place is awesome and one of Eagle Rock's true gems.
I am all for change, but man, sometimes, just leave things as they are!

Yay! I really loved this place. Ended up here last night after passing on our original plan and it… Read more »
Though it is known as The Black Boar now, it is still pretty much the Chalet still at heart. The Chalet was a super chill place to go for a drink and damn they definitely know how to make some strong drinks. I still believe they made the strongest AMF's. Well, RIP
What?! It's CLOSED? Goes to show that I've been living under a rock for the past few months. This is saddening news, as many memories were had here. Albeit probably more bad than good, but I have a strange tendency towards nostalgia.

The Chalet has been around for awhile, and I still like it quite a bit. The bar isn't huge, but it isn't that small either. It's just comfortable here, like an old sweater or pajamas. It kind of feels like a ski lodge, and they've got a great jukebox.
This bar fills up on the weekend with Occidental students but if you are hanging out in Eagle Rock mid-week, you can't go wrong. If you're a vegetarian check out Fatty's across the street.
Forgive me for going against the grain, but I'm just not a dive bar type of gal!
I don't like The Woods.
I don't like Liquid Kitty.
I even think Alibi Room is a bit quasi-divey.
Give me a slick, fashion forward, interior design focused ultra lounge that plays Cafe del Mar or Hotel Costes and I will be one happy clam. Or a cool Speakeasy lounge in NYC and that too would make me one happy clam.
But I kind of liked this place! This place has an interesting interior, it reminds me of a ski lodge with rocks on the walls and fireplace. We found a L shaped couch grouping in the corner and I actually liked how cozy it was! The pours here are absolutely generous and the service is extremely friendly. I probably will be back since I'm dying to try Casa Bianca a couple doors down!
I REALLY like this place.
It has comfortable booths, a cool bar, nice bartenders, a jukebox, plenty of people, a cool red curtain for an entrance, clean bathroom and just an overall great vibe.
There is no cover and the drinks are pretty standard.
I think it's pretty inside lol and I love how the bar has its bottles perfectly in place and how the light glows in the background in order to brightly display the bottle selection.
WAS a great bar- but sound the death knell,,,
For some insane reason the owners have taken the managers advice and are closing down in august (2009) to gut the place and turn it into an English pub,,,
Oh the horror,,, so long Chalet, you WERE the best!
revision: ok its not SO bad. Still $$$ but it couldv been a lot worse.
99% of the time, you usually go get tacos after a night of drinking. However, for us, it was the other way around. We went drinking after a night of eating tacos. Hey, we're Yelpers, that's how we roll.
This place sits amongst the small little mom and pop shops that line Colorado Blvd in the hipster neighborhood that is Eagle Rock. Just on the next block over from Casa Da Bianca Pizza Pie and up the street from the Oinkster. Mmmmm..... Oinkster...
This place is apparently owned by the same guy that owns the Griffin, but I've never been to the Griffin, so I wouldn't know. The protruding stone walls were a nice touch to the sleek bar and furniture. We managed to snag a couple of tables in the corner near the bar. The music I could say was a bit loud, and the drinks had a decent pour. Couldn't tell you how much it was because it was bought for me.
I would definitely love to come back here and hang out under better circumstances, because honestly, I was just too full from the tacos and was about ready to go to bed.
3 stars. The Chalet is not bad. I like the diverse (age, gender, ethnicity, single/couple/groups) scene and the vibe is pretty nice. The decor is conversation material ("why a lodge, a chalet, fireplace and all?") but it's tastefully dimly lit and the overall visual ambience works. The soundtrack is a bit loud, a bit of rock and maybe even some alternative, so it's really not conducive to a conversation unless you don't mind yelling. I like the music, but it was overkill for a lounge.
The drinks are good, but I've had better. Bartender was pretty attentive and friendly, though it was hard to hear him name the drinks or answer "hey, what's on the special list tonite?" because of all the noise and music.
There was a bit of a wait late Saturday night around and inside was predictably crowded. Standing room only, and lots of folks packed near the bar, which made getting to the bartender and ordering drinks a bit difficult. Otherwise, the couches were pretty comfy, if you could get one, At some point, it almost felt like the air was a bit thin from having so many people in a little enclosed space. Empty glasses and bottles were picked up regularly, which made the stay more enjoyable. There is no wait service, so you have to run to the bar yourself.
Verdict: The Chalet is a nice place to hang out and have a couple of casual drinks. Casual, relatively diverse, and laid-back, it's inviting in that sense. However, the loud music and crowded room detracted from the overall enjoyment and lounge ambience I was looking for. "A-OK."
Coin drops through the slot. I have one arm stretched and leaning against the jukebox. Looking down, I press 23 and 11 to play my selection.
The beat drops.
"Did you see the lights,
as they fell all around you?"
My head, while moving along to a Steve Miller beat, slowly raises up and drifts over to my pal at the bar. We rendezvous towards each other, looking for a place to commune conversationally. It's only a weeknight, but tonight there is a lot -- and I can't stress that enough -- of people here doing whatever their thing is. The night was apparently packing a lot of heat, as The Chalet was drawing all the cats that night. While making the visual rounds for a seat-able area, I notice a rather modest selection of tap beer. It wouldn't be something I'd inspect further until later in the evening.
"Did you hear the music
serenade from the stars?"
Our eyes fail to mark a spot, so we settle for an area off to the side. I'm kind of drawn to the fireplace that's totally giving off this homely, log cabin vibe to the bar. And at this moment, I eye a group of people that look like they're just about to leave their table. It's right next to the fireplace, too. When I realize they're just doing the "get up and let the person in the middle of the group out to use the bathroom" routine, I do a sort of routine of my own, resembling some kind of twirl, as if to imply that I wasn't even trying to fetch their spot.
"Did you feel the wind
as it blew all around you?"
We didn't have to stand in our self-designated area for too long. Not more than five minutes pass and there's a space in front of the fireplace that's luring my friend in. No twirl-about this time, our feet are relieved of their duties for the night.. And wouldn't you know it, it's just about time for another round, one in which is my turn to pick up. $5 beers... Hoegaarden on tap... and a smile on my face, as I walk back with two glasses. This place is small, I think to myself while walking back. Another reason why I like this place. Small, but well designed. Not divey at all, but you might be calling it that, anyway.
My friend and I manage to talk about the Valentine's that just passed, our mutual friends, music, and engage in not-so-serious politics and philosophical discussions. The time flies quickly, because we're constantly surrounded by the same amount of chatter since we first walked in. People don't want to leave this place. And for good reason. Once you're inside, and once you've found a place to hang your hat, you're pretty much at a place as comfortable as mom and dad's. Well, when they're not home, anyway.
"Did you feel the love
that was in the air?"
I wasn't here to pick up on girls; I wasn't here to drown sorrows; I wasn't even here to check out their eclectic jukebox, which I've heard great things about and wasn't disappointed with; and I certainly wasn't here to toss around drinks like a barfly. It was just me, my friend, and what turned out to be a great night at The Chalet. I laugh at the thought that people think they need more than that.
Fortunately, The Chalet is the only thing really going on in this stretch of Eagle Rock Blvd. Parking outside was bountiful. We walked back to our car with smiles on our faces, leaving behind all worries of having to brace ourselves for that dreaded parking ticket that might be waiting for us, or for a valet attendant to take 15 minutes to get our car.
We drove off, but speaking for myself, this won't be my last time. And I can't wait for the next.
"We're lost in space
and the time is our own.."
The best drinks ever made!!
1/4 Juice 3/4 Alcohol....guaranteed! (Not a joke...seriously).
Dark, romantic ambiance with a fire place...what more can you ask for?
Check it out!
From what I can remember...
the jukebox was tight, like the night, I had to wipe, activator from the mike,..in 1985!
The place was full of people, but all were looking for a good time. Sue didn't have to pull chrome on House of Pain. Drinks were stiff and the bartenderess was as pleasant as me mates were charming. We had a great time...but half a flask at the moobies and three and one-half 7 & 7s later things began to blur.
...till next we meet.
I was in Eagle Rock visiting some friends. They are locals in Eagle rock, so they recommended this place to hang out and catch up.
This place is truly a local gem. The ambiance is nice. The crowd is chill. The drinks are well priced. And the bartenders definitely do NOT skimp on the alcohol.
I would love to have a place like this in my neighborhood. I'd be a regular. Whenever I'm in Eagle Rock, I'll definitely hit this place up.
I've only been here on the weekends but....
This place is like a disease. Take note of the following symptoms.
You will see:
Frat boys, Sorority Gals, College hipsters (a step below real hipsters), douche bags, bad 80s fashion, men in sweaters, chin art & neck beards & the beards in between. There are tiny chairs and a fireplace blazing in the summer time.
The douchebag factor is high.
You will feel:
your wallet emptying while your liver remains surprisingly healthy, your mouth and tongue dry from lack of fluids, dwarfed when you are sitting down and like you are going to fall on top of someone when you are standing up.
You will say:
"Excuse me. Pardon me. Sorry. Excuse me."
"WHAT?!?!?!"
"a BEER! I'd LIKE A BEER!"
"OW! my FOOT!"
You will smell:
The mixture of cheap cologne and rohypnol.
This spot is just a college bar that is just cool enough to not have jocks in white baseball caps blasting Dave Matthews but not cool enough to keep away their cooler friends away.
SIGMA NU MUTHER EFFERS!!!! PUT ON BOB MARLEY'S LEGEND ALBUM! I LOVE THAT SHI!!
Well ranch me up and call me spanky, folks, yet another bar with a dim reddish colored interior with red drapes, uh draped, about the place.
I'd call this place "Continental Room, Eagle Rock." It's a hip joint, cool crowd and the bar tenders serve up the goods on the drinks. If you're trying to get your date drunk they can help you. But going to prison for date rape is not as cool as 'The OC' made it seem. Take from me, a guy who's been date raped a lot in his life. There are victims, people. And "no" doesn't always mean "no," I learned the hard way; forgive the pun.
I liked my bartender.
He could obviously tell I was a rookie (which is true, I've been over the age of 21 for a little over a year, but I still don't know my way around a drink menu) and was very hospitable, engaging, and all-around nice. Nothing snooty here. He poured my diet coke and barcardi heavy for a great bargain - $7.
That's what I love about my hood, my Eagle Rock. Although gentrification had brought in some hipsters, that process has slowed down. I still feel right at home because this place isn't pretentious. Hence I never go to the west side...*shudder*
I'll definitely be coming back. The ambiance is killer! It's small, intimate, with a cozy fireplace and cushy couches. Great for a night of clandestine love affairs on a budget...something I frequently engage in. ;P
The Chalet has everything I could want in a bar. The place is classy, warm, and welcoming. It's very similar to the Griffin (same owner) but the crowd is definitely not as pretentious. The bartenders are friendly and have very generous hands in pouring the alcohol. They're cute too.
I really like the ambiance in the Chalet. It has a cool little cabin-esque feel to it. They've got lot's of booth and table space, pretty candles, stone walls, and a fireplace to top it all off. The juke box is constantly surrounded by people, and from what I heard, there's a good selection of music to choose from. All in all, I like it a lot. It's a nice escape from the Los Feliz snobs.
Really chill place, good music... with the right group of friends, worth the experience.
This place has a very log cabin/elk lodge feel to it. Very cool. Local for us too. We had a blast chillin' there on a Saturday nite.
I am confused. Is this supposed to be a dive bar? Or...a more upscale bar? The ambiance is nice - dimly lit with candles, big open couches, fireplace, etc. The thing that threw me off was that the wardrobe of each person there was for a different occasion. On top of that, the couch was not comfortable and the drink I ordered (some apple-y drink with woodchuck) was not what I had hoped for at all. I felt out of place and confused so I decided to finish the drink that wasn't very good and just bounce. Unfortunately, I am not with my fellow yelpers on this one - I won't be going back.
fresh's 2 CENTS:
if you're in the area, i'd say try a different bar unless you're really into fireplaces...
As a former Oxy student I'm quite familiar with the Chalet. In fact, it was the first bar I went to as a 21 year old. I arrived slightly before midnight as a 20 year old but the bouncer just ushered me in. I was slightly disappointed I wasn't carded on my birthday. Sad.
The interior is very Chalet-esque. A little too dark in my opinion, but the wood and rock make it unique. The drinks come strong, but are tasty enough. The bartenders were always friendly and efficient and overall I have to say I never had a bad time here. Overall it's a fun place to relax on a weeknight. The booths are cozy but not overly romantic. It's chill coming here on a date or with the guys and you can never really feel out of place here.
While I've been to better places, there are so many happy, warm, fuzzy memories here. Not at all a bad place to have your "first" drink.
Wait...I think I just woke up from a well poured evening in the abandoned fetal byproduct of a bob ross masterpiece and an accidental frank lloyd wright wet dream.
I'm okay with this. No, really. I am.
Los Angeles is kind of intimidating.
4 stars for a great neighborhood bar.
The 5th star is for Mars, the bouncer.
The drinks are always strong. The environment is cozy. In the winter you could almost pretend you are escaping the snow. The fire place & juke box are an added bonus.
When you want to head out on a Saturday night apparently the "cool" bars open at 8
And I like to drink earlier than that
Yeah that's right
I like to get it started early
And be in bed by 10:30
The Chalet is lovely and accommodating and open at 7 (I still think bars should be open at 7 a.m. but that's just me)
The interior is dark and cozy with candles and comfy couches and couples canoodling (yay for alliteration!)
Taric the bartender makes a mean martini with perfect ice crystals floating on top
My lemon drop was lovely, not overly sweet, which many lemon drops are, in a way that's almost offensive
And even better it was only 8 bucks which for a specialty drink isn't bad
My only real pet peeve with this place was the door to the women's bathroom opens up to a wall which I can see equaling drunk stumbling into a wall
I was wearing a STANFORD pullover.
The bouncer said he could not let me in.
I said huh? Standford university a gang?
so my friends and I spent our money at oinksters.
great burgers!
F the chalet! Ill stick to the York. people are nice.
oh, The Chalet?
I think I've seen that place
On Yelp
This was me when my sister and I were cruising from Los Feliz through Silver Lake and Eagle Rock looking for somewhere to get a REAL drink on 1/1/09. That's right... not NYE but NYD, the day for real drinkers not the party amateurs of the 31st.
Turns out that its yelp-presence was enough to embed it in my mind, even though I'm not from around these parts. Good job too because it fulfilled two big requirements that night:
1. It was open
2. It was full of people getting drunk on hard liquor
Getting that on NYD would be enough to get a 3 star, we were so desperate, but it bumps up to 4 and maybe more for having great decor, a real fire on the go and some very comfortable seating. It fell short of 5 by being a bit TOO Los Angeles and for the staff coming up short for mixed drinks ideas.
Still, it's somewhere I'd come back to at the drop of an olive. The world needs more wood-panelled window-less drinking establishments with oil paintings of mountains. Evidently they are liked by the right kind of people as many of the NYD drinkers were well on their way to getting their car keys confiscated.
Suggestion: get a stuffed moose head on the wall.
I dare go against the grain. The score is more of an average based on the times I have visited the establishment rather than scoring it based on a first impression.
The overall vibe in the lodge inspired dive is lively and comfortable. The music levels are loud, but not totally blaring over your conversation. You may be able to even find seating even on a busy night, but it's not too bad to stand around while you immerse yourself in the mixed company. The bartenders are prompt and quite friendly and the drinks aren't too shabby either. Undoubtedly, the Chalet is a popular hangout among locals and outsiders alike. Yes, I totally agree with the majority of the patrons who have visited or frequent this bar. However, I cannot help but yelp my qualms about my last experience.
First of all, don't wear a hat to the Chalet, even if it's a colorful, gay TokiDoki hat like mine. Security told me that the letters "L" & "A" with a heart and little cartoon characters apparently may cause a scuffle. Seriously? That seems a bit immature for me to have someone argue what team or city is better. If visitors make a big deal about where you are from, then that doesn't reflect too well of the people who are there in the first place. If you're going to start a fight it should be a better reason than that or at least it's because hit on the wrong boy there. Without incident, I removed the hat AFTER they had let me in with it on my head.
Someone actually told me to "back up off" him because I was standing too close. Does he realize it's a small bar and personal space is scarce? Homophobe? Probably, but that's irrelevant. I'll be sure to float above the tight crowd without physically contacting anyone next time I need to maneuver my way back to my seat. So much for my impression of the great people contributing to a great vibe. (FYI: No, that guy wasn't a factor in the score above. I'm better than that. I just wanted to splash more examples of my provoked negativity.)
To top off my night, the same people from security asked our entire group to leave because our friend was kicked out. Someone had accompanied him to make sure he was okay. First of all, I had maybe half a drink at best, removed my stupid hat, and was sitting down having a great conversation sober. I had NO reason to be kicked out. I understand that bouncer protocol is really undefined, but it seems really unprofessional to kick out perfectly good PAYING customers. Also, without incident, we left to avoid trespassing if we had provoked the security.
Again, the positive unfortunately did not outweigh the negative factors. Aside from the cool look, the bartenders were really the best features about this place. I can care less if everyone else in Eagle Rock loves this place. I'll think twice about going to this local spot again. I won't deny that I will go if a good friend wants to shoot the breeze, but I'll suggest another place to hang out before committing.
Every time I get a vegetarian dinner at Fatty's & Co across the street, I get a drink at The Chalet first. They make great companions for a relaxing, adult night out. Good drinks, friendly staff, come early to stake out a comfy booth.
Nice bar type atmosphere, was crowded when I went, drinks were good, affordable, dark, plenty of seating, street parking.
Had a good time there!
The first time I came to this bar my bf and I were still newbies to the bar scene. We had just graduated from hangin at his friends garage playing PlayStation while drinking 40's.
I didn't really like how dark it was and there seemed to be a lot of older people. But recently we came back with some of our friends and had a totally different experience. This time I didn't mind it being so dark, the crowd was different and since I know what to order now...
I will come back to this place and have another Hoegaarden, with my bf.
Lets keep it Simple =No reason NOT to visit The Chalet.
Do you live far? Then make it a destination. Try the Italian place down the block (west) for dinner first. You need a good base before drinking right??
I hate bars. But I like the Chalet.
Mostly mellow people. 90% attitude free. (I'm full of attitude so I make up the other 10% every time I show up. I'm not sorry.)
The crowd is mixed. I'd say leaning towards indie but sans the fashionista "uniform". Lots of nondescript folks that don't seem to subscribe to any particular musical genre. And I think that's part of what makes this place interesting. I've sat next to activists, History ph.D candidates, and random, over-exited groupies.
Crowd age: Late twenties early thirties mostly and a few dirty old men like me that will lie about their age to anyone that asks.
This is a very cool spot if you want to go out for a drink and just relax with friends. The seating is super comfy and they have a good selection to pick from on the juke box. It looks like a ski lodge inside and has really cheesy pix on the walls, which made me like it even more. PLUS, they let you bring in food if you so please... and there's a great little pizza place a few doors down, so grab a pie, then find a seat and enjoy!
The faux ski lodge look is timeless!
Actually, I really enjoyed the fireplace. It makes the place really nice and intimate. I usually go on a weeknight to avoid the crowds and actually have a place to sit.
I've had many good conversations with friends at this spot. The liquor isn't too costly and the staff stays out of your way.
This is a definite must-see for anyone in Eagle Rock.
There is little that can be added to the numerous reviews for this gem of a bar. The Chalet is what most bars strive to be.
Here's my two cents:
The Chalet is a great spot to grab some strong drinks and relax. The bar gets very busy after 10pm, so I usually go in at the start of a night out. Colombo's and Casa Bianca Pizza Pie are nearby, and all the Highland Park or Los Feliz dive joints are 10 minutes away.
Parking is on the street (Colorado) and I've never had an issue finding a spot close by. There is additional parking on sidestreetsand in the rear as well. Me and the Old Lady get in here at least once/twice a month.
This bar is really dark and casual, just the way I like it. The bathrooms are clean (always a good sign). The crowd can be pretty diverse, which is nice. The mostly younger, good looking crowd is generally well behaved.
The older, big, ugly fucks like me always get left alone by the alcohol fueled frat boy machismo, but no worries for you mild mannered boys and hairless twinks, as I have never seen anybody get stupid. I think the 7 foot doorman keeps the grab-ass to a minimum.
I have had some some interesting conversations while at the bar. The bartenders are fantastic and never pour a shitty drink. I tip well so they are always quick and professional. Drink prices are cheap IMO.
The jukebox has great music on it , and I always ending up hearing songs that I need to download. This a perfect spot to start or finish a night of boozing.
I've been coming to this bar since the mid/late 90's when it was still called Toppers. It's been sold a couple times and remodeled a couple times more since those days. For me the chalet is...meh. It's not shitty, it's not great. Beer selection is OK, prices are average. Jukebox is OK too. I do like the decor a lot, but the original red plaid carpet was better than what is currently in there. Supposedly it is going to be changing into a 'British sports pub' some time in the near future so I guess if you want to check it out, now would be the time.
Nice place. A good amount of seating, which is great when you find a spot, but somewhat odd spatially if you're standing around / hovering over others.
Drink quality/price ratio is good.
