Stumbled in here on my birthday celebration night. Interesting crowd. I didn't see "yuppies" as previously spoken about before. I actually felt like one of the older folks in there.. could have been because I was celebrating a b'day in my 30's but I digress.
We only stayed a minute because it was so packed that we couldn't move. I can see this as your 2nd or 3rd stop of the night for sure in the highlands.
I went there for Halloween. I had a great time. Thank God because I had tickets to Park Tavern. Drinks were reasonable and the bartenders were good.

I really hate this place but my roommates convince me to go about once every couple of months. I don't get its appeal - it's small, the music sucks, the bartenders suck, and it's WAY too crowded on the weekends. The crowd is always really random but I often see familiar faces when I go.
I agree, the only good thing about it is dropping in to get some liquor during a night at Moe' and Joe's.
sooooo fun! Good cheap drinks with a make - shift dance area so you can bust a move. Definitely a fav of mine in the highlands
I hung out here briefly last night. They had a live DJ I believe, but most of it was really bad dance- pop music (he did play one good Daft Punk song though) and throw in some bad hip hop. In this sense it reminded me of the really bad music, although from an earlier generation, that is played at Hole in the Wall in Buckhead and not surprisingly, the crowd seemed to be pretty similiar.
We did get great service from the bar considering how busy it was.
I really dont see myself making a special effort to come back here....the place really doesnt offer much of anything special and the one thing it tries to offer that is different from other places at in the Highlands, the music and dancing, is what the place fails at miserably.
I love this bar! It's a great place to go to if you are hanging at Moe's and Joe's and want a shot :)
They also added a great singer/songwriter on Wednesday nights and Sunday evenings.
Also the bartenders make the best shots!

I really enjoy The Cavern. I actually like it in part because it has a neighborhood feel to it, more than say, Dark Horse Tavern has. The bartenders are nice, and are quick. I find nothing more annoying than a surly bartender who acts like you are inconveniencing them. When I went there was a pretty good range of people there which I find often makes for a better night than the monotonous crowd that can be found at many of the fine establishments in Atlanta... or Buckhead.
The drinks are a good price, and this place is within walking distance of my apartment. Hard to complain with that. I liked the dark atmosphere and enjoyed sitting at the bar. This isn't the sort of place you will feel you need to be dressed up for. I did not try the different shots the night I was there, but have heard they have a great variety. I will be headed back sometime soon to check those out.

OK Lauren you beat me! I think you owe me half of the "first to review" because I found the place (I mean if you can call stumbling two feet into the next bar a find)!
This place is right next to Moes and Joes in the Virginia Highlands and it reminds me a lot of The Righteous Room. They have different artist installments for purchase which my friends and I found to be quite interesting. Although way out of our price range we really enjoyed looking at the pieces. The artist at the time had made portraits out of different shades of pennies and poker chips.
Our server was really attentive and our glasses were never empty. This is a big plus for this place. It is a very narrow and dark bar basically just the length of the bar with a few tables in front and outside. The bathrooms are yucky, but I didn't spend much time in there so it wasn't a problem. It appeared to me that all the, in my opinion, normal people were sitting outside while the more than too often and somewhat sketchy regulars were crowded around the bar area. Other than the one cute bartender (and attractive server as Lauren described), this is a place that I would not go for meeting people. The drink specials on the other hand are great $3 well vodka on Thursdays. And no, I'm not too good for well vodka!

I disagree with bad reviewers in that as a bar having one man act DJ on Fridays playing Backspin 80s, you get to ask and request songs to your liking. So if the music Sucked is because nobody was requesting and this makes a difference. I LOVE it and I don't come often b/c it is notg a place where I can get many friends to hangout for long. It is for the younger 25-or so crowd but I turned 36 and came to my last Bday celebration last Friday with my Super duper cool friend Coby who is up for anything. The beers are cheap, the dance floor is small and so is the seating arrangement, but is good people watching and good tunes...
Went there last night to kick off the birthday celebration. It was slammed. The music was excellent, classic hip hop, and really set the mood. I've been to the Cavern a few times, and while I prefer its neighbor, Moe's & Joe's, the Cavern is generally open a bit later and has a full liquor license so you can get the shots and mixed drinks so lacking from Moe's.
I only stayed a few minutes before hopping to the next bar, but managed to run into an old college friend. Apparently this is a good place to go, from his recommendation and the fellow yelpers. As this is only like 2 miles from work, I think I'll have to turn it into a regular stop.

Tonight I went to meet up with Molly D., Berlin B., Bonnie P., and Drew at Moe's & Joe's. After Bonnie and Drew left - Berlin, Molly and I headed over to the Cavern. We had a HOT Brazilian waitress who brought us our drinks. She was lovely and even posed for a picture with us (to be posted later).
The bar was dark and the way I like it, but they had some cool artwork of portraits made with checkers (also to be posted later). Drinks were fairly cheap, and reasonably strong. Stop # 2 on the meet up proved to be interesting with some girl claiming she went to ten different private schools, then got her GED, then was a debutante at Piedmont Driving Club, then works for her mother's real estate company. Interesting.
The company was great, and it made the bar that much better. An interesting place with a hot bartender to spend time at after Moe's & Joe's.

Honestly, this is a really fun place with an apparent group of regulars and a very friendly and generous bar staff. I met some friends on the patio here last night and it was the perfect place to sit and have people meet you...
Our waiter Luis was very nice, attentive, and personable. They have lots of draft beer and pitchers of margaritas available! I didn't try food here (not sure they have food, but if you're hungry just walk next door to Moe's and Joe's), but I think I heard that their wings are good.
This is great neighborhood bar and I'll be back soon to see what other trouble I can get into (or observe others getting into...).

I love this bar! I can go there alone and feel perfectly comfortable. I know a few of the staff but even if someone I don't know is working they go out of their way to make me feel comfortable. The regulars here are also quite nice and down to earth. You can talk to people for hours in a nice casual way and not feel like you are being picked up.
Also, the beer is cheap...and they have margarita specials and it is smoker friendly which is important to me because I like cancer sticks with with a pint of liver killer. They just go nicely together ;-)
The Cavern is one of my favorite places to go because you feel like you are visiting friends every time you walk in.

If you're going to go to the Cavern, make sure to check out Friday and Saturday nights featuring DJ J-Thunder. He's one of the few reasons why I hang out in the Highlands on the weekends, that and the drinks are pretty cheap :)

The Cavern is dark and slightly dirty, but sometimes that is exactly what the doctor ordered. I second the statement about the fab DJ- he is great. It is kind of hard to dance in there since it is so blasted small, but somehow the people make it happen. It is fine holiday fun for sure. Drinks are cheap, and the bartenders are efficient. What more could you ask for?

Cheap drinks with great bartenders. Small and intimate atmosphere. I frequented this spot on Monday's for a while. Ask the bartender for an oatmeal raisin shot. She's got a lot of tricks up her sleeves with various shots. Some of the best I've ever had. I wish they had some good music there on the regular so I could frequent it again.

this is one of my favorite spots in the highlands. The fact that it is right across the road from my casa also helps too. It is not a huge place but a neighborhood hang out needs to be small and hidden from the OTPers. the staff will always greet you with a hello or if your a regular a hug may come standard. The highlands arent really known for having great dj's but lately the cavern has had a kick booty dj the last few saturdays. Imagine every 80's and 90's jam you sang in the confides of your car blasting in the art decorated lounge. So, i urge thee to spelunk on over to the cavern.

I'm partial because this is one of my favorite bars, but this place has what I consider to be the best bartenders in the ATL. A nice cozy atmosphere, with a small patio out front. The place is tiny, and never gets too out of hand like the meat-markets in the rest of the Highlands. When Johnathan DJ's on the weekends he never fails to play some De La Soul for me. What more could you ask for?

I like The Cavern. It's MY neighborhood hangout. I can be there in just 3 minutes walk and the staff treats me well. It's a cool place to just mellow out after dinner or before you hit some trendier dance club. It would definitely help if a few more of "the womenfolk" showed up as it can get pretty dude-heavy sometimes. Most people are pretty tame hear (a good thing). It's not a place to do jello shooters off a bikini clad co-ed, but if you like your bars a bit dark and smokey and your servers friendly, you'll probably like it.
