have a drink and bring my dog?  awesome

when i come here i always bring my pit.  it's nice to be able to socialize and drink and bring dog along  as well.

i can't comment on the food as i have never eaten here but the drinks are relatively strong.  the crowd isn't pretentious and the little christmas lights really add to the atmosphere.

Downgrade from 4 to 3 stars.

Order for take out consisted of:
1. 2 burgers medium well with swiss, mushrooms, and grilled onions
2. Fresh Apple Crumble with choice of custard or whipped cream (I opted for whipped cream
3. Total: $30.81

Order received:
1. My burger was more medium rare.  Granted, I understand beef purists would say rare is better.  But if I ordered it medium well... I'd like to have it medium well.  I'm funny that way.
2. Most disappointing apple crumble ever.  I thought choosing a dessert that was essentially a glorified apple pie would be too hard to mess up.  It came out bland, dry, uninteresting, and with custard instead of the whipped cream that I asked for.  RAWR

Revelation:
1. Don't go to a pub and order food.  Order beer.  You'll still get the calories... and you'll never be disappointed with the execution.
2. Get burgers from In n Out.

Parking was a BITCH! $10 next door, and NO street parking. It reminds me how much I hate partying in Hollywood.

The outdoor patio area is very nice. No weird loud music, so you can actually have a conversation with your friend or the guy that's hitting on you without saying "what?" like 20 times...

Holy Mackerole! Been YEARS since I been here. And it's STILL here.

How?

I'm absolutely convinced the ONLY reason this place is still open is *SHOCK*  --the Patio that everyone gushes about.  I may be an against the grain kinda guy on most fronts, BUT--now following the herd, I am another one of them gushers!

Yet not pleased to be dragged here as Part 3 of an unplanned mini-pub crawl Sunday eve. My bud's bud Clifford was rambling on about some blabbety blah live jazz band bleepity bla yada yada yada. Not having eaten all night, I was crabby and skeptical about EVERYTHING. Hello, low blood sugar!

Jazz--Yea.

Just recently, a friend who was expecting outta town visitors hit me up for some 'dim, chillax, intimate jazz lounge' where one could sip cocktails and bob one's head to some great improv interplay of standup bass, sax, perhaps some horn, some cha-chatty-tee-cha of that distinctively fluid jazz percussion, and maybe even some piano to boot.

Sadly, our sprawling megalopolis is quite thin on such kinda joints.

The places that might most closely approximate such a vibe were haphazardly scattered far and wide like a jar of spilt marbles. Among those places, few if any were really full-on jazz joints. Most were restaurants, clubs, coffeehouses or bars that HAPPENED to have a night or TWO of approximately jazzy stylins'. Not that there's anything wrong with THAT, it's just wrong that we don't have any of these small cozy joints in the City that do jazz FULL TIME like in New York, Chicago, Tokyo, San Fran, etc...

Oh sure, we got the Catalina (not small, certainly HUGE on price) but I really prefer not to take out another mortgage in this broken housing environment!

Sure, we used to have (til recently) the Jazz Bakery, which had great acts, but the sterile uptightedness and cheap white plastic lawnchairs were too much anti-jazz vibe for me to bear, and I was not alone. One time, Pucho Brown (the legendary band leader of the old school Harlem Nuyorican soul outfit Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers) was jammin' with his most excellent band there for a 4-day engagement and in the middle of the set he abruptly stopped playing his timbales, turned to the crowd, and shouted,

'Wait a minute here. Wait. I've been playing live for almost 50 years and I gotta say, this is the FIRST time that not one of you people is dancing! How can you NOT get up and dance to this shit?!? How we gonna make it thru 3 more nights without dancing? Sheeyat!'

Soo...this the way it is here in LA.

Sure, Baked Potato. Sure, Industry Cafe and Jazz. Sure, Cafe Metropole. Sure, Red, White, and Bluezz (you'll notice, it's not Red White and Jazz), and sure, some others kinda fit the bill SOME of the time.

Amazingly, Cat and Fiddle is one of those great places to see jazz, if for only one night (Sunday). For how much longer, who the hell knows?

Why?

Well, how much longer these jazzcats gonna live to jam another day? They're all at least in their 70s, maybe some in their 80s!
So, come down and soak it up on the chill patio and, tho it's no subterranean dimly lit lounge, neither swank nor really intimate, embrace it for however long it lasts!

I made it in by 10pm for the last set. Whew.

One of the drummers lumbered out from behind the drum 'cage' while another literally stumbled up to replace him behind the skins, proceeding to immediately drop his drumsticks, then take what seemed an eternity to pick 'em up. I could almost FEEL his bones creaking.

Gradually, musical noises began emanating amid the fraternal chatter of these old blokes, though I could not detect a pulse from either the keyboards OR the catatonic fella slouching and crouching over them, hands poised to pound the keys, but seemingly needing to steady them in place first.

Then HARK! Suddenly we have a bite! 'Bye Bye Blackbird...Bye Bye...Blackbird!' the lead singer starts crooning, a scratchy gravelly mix of Louis Armstrong meets smooth Sarah Vaughan. Yes, the male version, folks! Kickin' stand up bass is doin' the walk and the seemingly drunk drummer comes alive. I hear a few distinct keyboard undertones emanating from those fingers I'd left for dead.

YEA! these cats are swingin'!!! they've come alive!

I can't say the same for my limp 3 bean soup. I had to chow outta necessity so it's a'ight, I wasn't expecting much. The onion rings were not that bad, especially when dipped in soup for necessary lubrication....

'Bye Bye Blackbird...Auf Wiedersehen...No one seems to understand me'.... Word up! Ahh! A sax solo from the 'House of Blues' baseball jacketed, baseball capped, wearin' his sunglasses at night lead singer!
'Blackbird, Bye Bye!'

The Show ends. As they walk off the stage, the lead singer reminds us to give a big round of applause for their guest drummer, 'Sitting in for Clarence Johnston, who's too busy signing autographs in the parking lot.'

Ha ha!

Pat Britt and the All-Stars, yo! Catch 'em while they're still breathing!

DONE.

In order to enjoy happy hour at The Cat & Fiddle, you need an instruction manual or color-coding to know where to sit and where to order.

First, skip through the courtyard because happy hour drinks are only issued at the bar indoors.  Second, if you want to sit outdoors, you may only sit at a table if ordering food and drinks. Planning to get a bunch of appetizers?  Doesn't matter.  Food at this establishment is only defined by entrees.  No small plates here.  The good news is that Monday through Thursday, they offer an $8 entrée special.  Once, you get it down, it's not a bad deal. You just gotta know before you go.

The Cat & Fiddle has hosted some of the most fun weekend nights we've had in Hollywood - patio drinking with a great talkative mix of strangers from all walks of life. For a non-happy hour night-time visit, call ahead to find out if there's a cover for the night - another item confusing item as arbitrary as their seating assignments!

PATIO!
This patio is magical to me... I feel like I'm in Europe enclosed by the neighboring buildings and greenery. Days are casual here, slow paced (including the service) but relaxing. Then menu is limited, so don't plan on finding your favorite dish on it. The nights get pretty packed and call for standing. They do add an outside bar on busier nights as to alleviate the long line from the main bar. They do offer darts inside, but to be honest, I've spent all my time outside.
The bathrooms have the best air hand dryers in LA... what an accomplishment! They sound like jet engines and make the skin on your hands look like it's going to peel off your body, but they are dry in less than a minute! AMAZING!

Overall ambiance and crowd is what keeps me coming back and such a cheerleader of this place. Food... well, just eat before you come and spend your money on the pitchers of brew.

PATIOPATIOPATIO.

I totally forgot I was in the middle of Hollywood and just enjoyed a laid-back weekend evening with some good friends, great ambience, and not-too-badly-priced drinks. Did I MENTION I'm obsessed with the patio? Because I am. Absolutely lovely. Perfect for a low-key alternative to a crazy Hollywood night.

Festively decorated patio, convenient Sunset street parking after 7pm (I lucked into an off-duty meter spot right in front of the place) and great desserts (had an apple crumble with vanilla custard that made me melt).

Use 'strategery' when selecting a place to sit because 1) people smoke on the patio and 2) they can't/won't move the heating lamps around.

I love guiness on tap and fish and chips. Apple cobbler for desert.

I have had that for dinner many many times in the last 25 years.

Great outdoor cafe... I do not smoke anymore, but if you do, go for it.

I don't know why, but almost every time I've suggested to a date that we get a drink in Hollywood, she's always recommended the Cat & Fiddle.  This place MUST be cursed, because none of my dates here have EVER gone well...or maybe it's me?  No, no way, it's the bar, right?

Anyways, the bar itself is alright.  I don't remember them having a whole lot on tap, but they do have Boddington's, which I like.  When I've been it's always been crowded, and if you want to smoke on the patio, don't even fucking THINK about sitting at a table.  If you're not ordering food, you're not getting a table.  If you do try to sit down, a member of the waitstaff will cut you with a broken bottle.

I don't know.  I guess the patio's pretty and all, and it's nice that there's a place to smoke.  However, I don't usually go to pubs for patios, I go for the beer, and the beer selection here is really nothing to get excited about.

You'll probably have a decent time.

Sometimes what the doctor orders is a good Irish pub, a nice courtyard and some great drinks and food to get you going. That's just what you can expect from this place.

Located just a little off the Hollywood Frenzy but easy to get to on Sunset, this pub has a fantastic courtyard with trees, a fountain and tables all around to get you in the mood for just about anything. With a large bar inside as well as more seating you'll be hard pressed to not get a table at this joint on any day. If you go for just a drink, as many are want to do on a Friday or Saturday, you may be relegated to standing but who doesn't like standing in a beautiful, romantically lit, green filled courtyard? I ask you.

With a full bar and a standard Irish pub menu which includes Fish and Chips, Shepard's Pie and something they call a "Rarebit" (which sounds like rabbit) but is an open faced grilled cheese with tomato, you'll be filled with deliciousness all around. While others may find that standing while drinking can be quite a juggling act, if you order an appetizer to split with friends you'll be golden.

Perfectly located a few blocks from the arc light theaters you can go for a drink and a modestly priced meal before hitting the flicks for your less than modesty priced movie.

We were searching for an English Pub near the El Capitan Theater. Our plan was to have lunch there after seeing Dickens' Christmas Carol on 12-12-09. The Cat and the Fiddle came up in our search, however the reviews from 1-2009 were not the best. My husband and I quickly dined at this restaurant on 11-12-09 and we found it pleasant. He had the Shepherd's Pie and I had Bangers and Mash. His Pie was enjoyable - very hot and steamy. My English sausages were seasoned nicely with a unique spice and the peas and carrots were fresh and not overcooked! The mashed potatoes were a disappointment, however. I believed they were instant and had not much flavor. Please take the time to serve fresh potoatoes! A patron can tell the difference. My friends and I will return on 12-12-09.

This is not an Irish pub - it's an English pub - there really is a difference between us - lmao. That said, as far as English pubs go - this is top notch and everything is authentic down to the shepherds pie and fish and chips (though the chips are more like plain ol' french fries). The food is decent overall and the service friendly enough.

It can get a little crowded at night which is cool - but also try it for 'hair of the dog' brunch on a Sunday.

The outdoor patio makes you forget you're on Sunset in Hollywood and you can smoke like a chimney while you eat, drink and make merry.

This was the first bar I came to when I moved to L.A. and I didn't enter, not willing to pay a $5 cover just to get into a bar and drink on a Saturday night. I don't know if they still do this, but it doesn't matter. I only go here during the week or on weekend afternoons now, just to sit out on the patio and have a pint or two and maybe some fish 'n' chips. For awhile there I came here once a week, always on Wednesday for the Guinness deal they have (or had at that point), but eventually my trips tapered off and now I go 3-4 times per year. I think once I realized I wouldn't see Morrissey every other time I came here (because he moved to Rome or something), I figured it wasn't as worthwhile being a regular. Morrissey, I liked watching you perform card tricks, you dapper bastard.

Anyway, this is pretty par for the course when it comes to British pubs. It's got a lot of character and while it's certainly the Hollywood-ized version of such a pub, it's not unwelcoming. Solid food, good pours of good beer, very spacious, and a nice patio. But probably, like virtually every place in this part of Hollywood, a must-to-avoid on the weekends.

I only ever went to about 6 bars on rotation when I lived in LA and The Cat and the Fiddle always made the cut.  They have everything I'm looking for:

1. Al fresco drinking
2. Great beers on tap
3. An essence of people watching (not celebs, but just a mix of hipsters, recent college grads, industry types, etc)
4. A no-nonsense attitude

Come and meet friends, come to make friends, it's all the same and always happenin'.  I don't dig the cover on the weekends, but I deal.  This place always felt just right.

When I turned 21 I was going to this place on a pretty regular basis, but now that I've fond better bars, I'm not to fond of the place. It's good for getting food with friends, (if you suddenly can't function with out bangers and mash) but as a bar, it seats maybe 8 people max, and you can't sit down outside unless you're ordering food, so it's far down on my list of places to stop for a drink.

I've encountered some downright catty waitresses in the time I've gotten food here. (that's a pun. Catty. Get it.) Not to be that one yelper who claims that their waitress was SO RUDE and RUINED THE ENTIRE EVENING. But I think maybe twice I had a waitress I would have described as friendly.

The patio is fantistic - if you can get a seat.  Otherwise, there is not really a good reason to visit this Hollywood institution.

The sausage roll was authentic, bland and tasteless - that is authentic for English cuisine - but the assortment of sauces like HP brown sauce was perfect for adding that much needed kick of flavor.

I ordered the Croque Monsieur - yes, French food in an English pub.  It was awful and completely inauthentic.  It really should have just been labeled as a hot ham and cheese, but even then it would not have been good.

I had an order of the chocolate mousse to round out the meal and was able to find at least a small amount of redemption in the darkness of the chocolate used in the base.  Yummy.

Overall, Meh.

Improbable.  Decent trendy place filled with young good looking kids hanging out on a weeknight.  They must all be movie stars or something.

Maybe I ordered the wrong thing because the food was just ok.  Had some wine there because you know gotta get drunk wherever we go for some reason.  This was a cool chill place to hang out at and drink and eat.  Nice setting outside.

Good service
Cool unique food
Fairly cheap
Nice crowd

The Cat & Fiddle was one of the highlights of my L.A. get-away last weekend. With a crew of about 11 people, you'd think it'd be difficult to get into a jumpin' Hollywood bar on a Saturday night, but we walked right in and nabbed some great tables on the patio.

The raucous Hollywood-pub vibe is nicely offset by a super charming patio -- white lights, wrought iron patio furniture, lots of ivy. The drinks weren't great, but I didn't care. Good friends, warm weather, a touch of H-wood glamour -- what else do you need? We sat next to another group of close friends and, uh, mingled happily throughout the evening. It was a night to remember, and I'll definitely make a point of going back next time I'm in L.A.

Well, this is old school good times...
This place has been around since Gazzari's was the Godfather of Hollywood.
But because this place has never been soo OVER the Charts; it has endured many changes and replacements in Tinseltown...

Worth going to with some friends, not really a date; and definitely not for a special occasion. This place has a very old time "chill & casual" vibe for the regulars that really come to drink..
Large open bars inside, with tables to have diner, (i didn't eat, but it appeared like the original "Red Lion Tavern" of L.A.).
There is a large open patio that has heat lamps, tables, and lot's of smokers.. The music is consistently cool rock, and I'd say that if you haven't been; you should definitely make it a place of priority..

First point: the Cat is not a British Pub. It's a British-themed Hollywood Pub. It's an important distinction to make. If you're looking for a place that tries for a really authentic British Pub experience, you're better off commuting to Santa Monica. There, you'll find Ye Olde King's Head, which is ALSO not a British Pub. It's a British-themed Santa Monica Pub. The key differences being a better steak & kidney pie, and a crowd of genuine UK ex-pats who drink and swear, but who still read the trades. If a British Pub is what you're after, the United Kingdom of Great Britain is where you want to be. But if you'd rather stick to Sunset, the Cat is a nice, BIG spot to have a beer, unwind with friends or co-workers, and occasionally fake an English accent (pro-tip: don't actually do this.)

Point the Second: the crowd. The patrons of the Cat & Fiddle are a motley conglom of human genres; hippies, hipsters, yuppies, gangstas, rock stars, porn stars, actors, musicians, good-for-nothings, and faux-whathaveyous. If you've got a weird, cliched, and possibly outdated name for a class of people, you're likely to find them here on a busy evening. There's even a bar regular who looks like a shaved Santa Claus. There's always someone to talk to or someone to look at. It's usually a good crowd for any mood.

Point! the Trilogy: food & drink. The kitchen closes at 11, I believe, but if you're going for dinner, you'll be getting there well before that. The food is decent, but just a hair overpriced. Avoid the scotch egg (not because it's a particularly poor example of a scotch egg, but because scotch eggs are nasty.) Try the bangers & mash or a shepherd's pie if you've got space to fill. The fish & chips aren't as terrible as everyone says. Drinks are about average for Hollywood: 5-6ish for a pint of something, 7-9ish for liquor and cocktails.

You're in good shape if you can walk to the Cat... parking can be a pain. It's all street-side unless you shell out for valet ($6), or a garage/pay lot (anything from $8 to $15 or more depending on how long you stay.) Don't take a chance on the permit parking in the neighborhoods adjacent. The service inside is friendly at best and indifferent at worst. The patio is large and attractive, and they have heaters for the chillier months. The men's bathroom is outfitted with a pee trough... so, gents, if you don't like a communal wee, go before you leave the house.

My bottom line: if you live in the area, the Cat & Fiddle is a very comfortable place to be a regular. If you have to drive more than 15 minutes for it, make it a sometimes bar.

Really can't go wrong with an English pub. I thought this place was really cool. I even got to try a Shepard's pie, which I though was tasty. Meat with whipped mashed potatoes? Nothing wrong with that.

My likes:

- Cool vibe
- Sports on tv
- Good food
- They actually have pear cider so I can drink my Snakebites
- Big patio area to hang out, drink and smoke

My dislikes:

- The service here wasn't the best, took 10 minutes to get the fork we had asked for
- Parking. Because the street parking around here requires a permit after hours, you're pretty much stuck having to get valet. Theres $6 bucks you'll never see again.

My company paid for everything too so that was definitely a plus. If they didn't, I wouldn't have opted for the steak, the second most expensive thing on the menu haha

i forgot how unwarm hollywood people are.  this pub would be 5stars if they imported some pleasant staff from the south or midwest or canada.  the atmosphere, bar & food are top notch.  the happy hour ruled: good prices & tasty authentic complimentary cheese, & minced meat & sausage pastries .   damm, san diego & las vegas have way better customer service.  i appreciate it now.  i experienced customer service at 5 businesses in hollywood that day & everyone was icy except for the parking lot attendent.  so, it's not the owner's fault.  even if he imported some nice staff, they'd eventually get jaded.  i don't remember venice beach customer service being cold, 3 yrs ago. must be a hollywood/sunset thing.

Really chill, but my friends received my drinks literally 45 minutes later. Our server was really nice but seemed intimidated of our group of 30 people. Which brings up another point that Cat and Fiddle is a GREAT place for groups. And I think I may have been the luckiest person last night: after 2 Strongbow Ciders on TAP(!!!), I walked out of Cat and Fiddle right into my car - I got the meter RIGHT IN FRONT of the pub. Love love love. Luck luck luck. I'll be back, Cat & Fiddle!

Why would people come here for the food? Good grief. Listen, this is what you do:

If you are in Hollywood on a warm Sunday afternoon, walk your little selves over to Cat and Fiddle, grab a patio table, order a shandy or two (or three), watch the burnt out, hung-over rock stars as they slowly pry their eyes open for the first time that day, and have a wonderful time until it gets dark. 'Nough said. If you come expecting anything more, prepare to be disappointed.

Dont remember the food so it must not have been bad or good with decent service at the moment. Dont expect to be treated with courtesy even after spending $800 for a company dinner which we made reservations for. We were asked to leave our tables for another reservation.

BTW happy hour is not HONORED when sitting out on the patio.

I don't understand at ALL what people like about this place.  I guess the patio's cool but that's all they've got going for them.  This was the second time I've gone, and it wasn't any better than the first (which was years ago).  Parking was terrible, drinks were just okay (Maybe stick to beer here, as there's nothing special about the drinks...you could get 'em cheaper at a dive bar).

I guess it's a hollywood bar.  i grew up here.  i don't need to meet uninteresting star fucker poser-types who are trying to make it in the acting business but have never taken an acting class.  I want to get as far away from them as possible.  I just wanted a fun night out with my friends.  Doh.  Sorry to be so harsh, but I just was not into at all.

This place has excellent bloody marys. I love bloody marys and am never disappointed by the drinks here.

The servers seem to be a bit standoffish - they definitely could use a quick lesson in friendliness. When they were friendly it felt slightly faked, and when I tried to chat with them I felt like I was somehow wasting their time...

Also, when I was there, one of the waiters was petting some dogs a customer brought in to the outside patio. It is illegal for waiters to pet dogs while they are serving food...

And the food is mondo overpriced considering its rather plain nature. But the location is pretty convenient and it's set quite a bit off the street and that is an added bonus.

If you just want to come for a drink and not deal with the kinda rude servers, this is the place.

I came here for a lunch with a friend, and let me tell you, this is definitely a lunch-with-friends kinda place.

Since we live in a freaky sunshine and warm weather locale, nothing is more apt than a quaint little courtyard, little tables, loud gesturing people, and foliage. I waited quite peacefully, listening to the blow-hards discuss "the industry" until my friends came. I did this without feeling self-conscious, since quite a few tables were also singles enjoying a lunch.

Lunch with a friend demands a cocktail, so i order a (very) strong vodka tonic. I noticed they did have a drink specials menu, along with their lunch menu.

When I went inside to use the restroom, I noticed that the decor was kind of modern upscale pub, and the bathrooms were clean. That was important to me. The bathrooms should always be clean at a place you ingest food.

Overall, a pleasant experience with just okay Welsh Rarebit (fancy sounding grilled cheese). I wouldn't come back just to eat, but i would for drinks and a nice place to lanugish in.

The Cat & the Fiddle has changed little since the first time came here as a mere lad. The first time I came we found ourselves surrounded by burnt out studio musicians and rock star types. Now I find myself amongst  industry types eating on the patio so they can smoke.

Its a good place to meet a group especially on a warm night where one can sit outside on the large patio area. People watching is ok and the music pretty good. This place is not really known for it's food so  keep the expectations low on the food and come for the atmosphere and drinks. Ooh look, white little twinkle lights - mood lighting...

Parking is a disaster so don't expect to park on the street. You can pretty-up Sunset Blvd but underneath she is a dirty dirty ho - keep your car off the street if you value it.  Across the street and down the small street running across from the Hollywood Social Club - there is a generic outdoor lot for $8. If you get there at or around 10 - you can still grab a spot and avoid the local parking structures.

The FISH AND CHIPS are a must have at this pub! I came here for my birthday and had myself an order of Fish and Chips with a pitcher of Guiness. It was a Fantastic combination!!
Again, the Fish and Chips highly recommended!

Five stars for ambiance, that being said I don't like to come on the insanely busy weekend nights as this place really tends to fill up.
I have been a regular here for over a year now and some of these reviews just make me laugh out loud. As far as not being a genuine English Pub, that is total rubbish. This place was founded by a Brit, the chef is a Brit and I'll be damned if every single drinker sitting on the bench outside the doorway (on any given night) isn't one too, and if you look in the Mens room, there is a trough where the urinals would normally be. I"m sorry but it doesn't get more English than that.

As far as the menu, every restaurant has their hits and misses. The Scotch Egg- to each their own. That's not something I personally would want to eat, but It's an English staple and some people like it. The menu highlights in my opinion are the crab claws, the salmon salad, the steak salad, the curried chicken salad, the soft shell crab po' boy, the fish n chips, and the chicken and mushroom pie. Their omelet's are also really really good. They always have dessert and drink specials that go really well with their dinner specials. The service is good, so ask your server for their opinion. Chances are they know more than you...

Oh, and free Jazz on the Patio on Sunday nights=awesome

You can always count on the Cat & Fiddle to be the Cat & Fiddle.  Good beer, shitty wine, really good pub grub (crab fingers, order them and eat their ass off), good jukebox/DJ, fun friendly people and some douchenozzle chav wearing a wind breaker suit with a snargy British accent leaning drunkenly against the bar.  LOVES the Cat & Fiddle.
